Telangana is home to several notified Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities with distinct cultural traditions and geographical distribution across the state.

Major tribal communities such as Gond, Kolam, Koya, Chenchu, Lambadi, and Sugali are concentrated in districts like Adilabad, Nirmal, Mancherial, Mulugu, and Bhadradri Kothagudem.

Eligible applicants need an ST Caste Certificate to claim reservation in education, government jobs, scholarships, and various tribal welfare schemes. In Telangana, applications are submitted through the official MeeSeva portal, while the Tahsildar of the concerned Mandal Revenue Office issues the certificate after verification.

No Religion Restriction for ST Certificate

There is no religion-based restriction for obtaining a Scheduled Tribe (ST) Caste Certificate in Telangana. Eligibility is determined by whether the applicant belongs to a tribe notified as a Scheduled Tribe under the applicable constitutional provisions and satisfies the prescribed verification requirements.

Members of notified ST communities can apply for the certificate irrespective of whether they follow Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, or any other religion. The competent Revenue Authority verifies the applicant's tribal community and supporting records before issuing the certificate.

Lambadi, Sugali and Banjara Community Status in Telangana

The Lambadi (Lambada), Sugali, and Banjara communities are among the most recognised tribal communities in Telangana. Under the Scheduled Tribes notification applicable to the state, these communities are eligible to obtain an ST Caste Certificate, subject to verification by the competent Revenue Authority.

Community classification is not uniform across India. A community that is recognised as a Scheduled Tribe in Telangana may be classified differently in another state. Therefore, eligibility for an ST Certificate is determined according to the Scheduled Tribes list applicable in Telangana, not the classification followed elsewhere.

Important: If you belong to the Lambadi, Sugali, or Banjara community and are applying for reservation or welfare benefits in Telangana, ensure that your application and supporting documents correctly mention the community name recorded in your official records to avoid delays during verification.

Chenchu Community: A Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG)

The Chenchu community (also known as Chenchwar) is one of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) recognised in Telangana. The community primarily resides in and around the Nallamala forest region, including the Amrabad Tiger Reserve and adjoining tribal areas.

Like other Scheduled Tribes, eligible members of the Chenchu community can obtain an ST Caste Certificate to claim reservation in education, government employment, scholarships, and welfare schemes. In addition, eligible beneficiaries may also receive assistance under various Central and State Government programmes specifically designed for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).

Koya Communities of the Godavari Tribal Belt

The Koya community is one of the largest Scheduled Tribe groups in Telangana. A significant Koya population lives in the tribal regions of Bhadradri Kothagudem and Mulugu districts, particularly along the Godavari river basin and surrounding forest areas.

The Scheduled Tribes notification for Telangana recognises several Koya sub-groups, including Doli Koya, Gutta Koya, Kammara Koya, Musara Koya, Oddi Koya, Pattidi Koya, Lingadhari Koya, Raj Koya, and other notified Koya communities. Eligible members can apply for an ST Caste Certificate through the prescribed Revenue Department procedure to avail reservation and other benefits under the applicable Government rules.
