How to Fix a Name or DOB Mismatch in Aadhaar (Aadhar), PAN and Bank?

Find out which record is wrong by comparing each with your master document: birth certificate or 10th marksheet for date of birth, and the correctly spelled document for your name. Fix that record first, usually Aadhaar at a centre (₹75). Then correct PAN, bank KYC and EPF. PAN–Aadhaar linking needs name, date of birth and gender to match.

Which document should you fix first?

Answer a few questions. The tool tells you which record to correct first, so you don't waste a once-only Aadhaar change.

What is your "master" document, and why does it matter?

Every office checks your name and date of birth against a document. If the documents disagree, the request gets rejected. So pick one document as your master and make every other record match it.

  • For date of birth: your birth certificate or 10th/12th marksheet. Aadhaar is not proof of date of birth. News reports say the Supreme Court held this in 2024, and that EPFO removed Aadhaar as a DOB proof in January 2024.
  • For your name: the document with the spelling you want to keep for life. For most people that is the 10th marksheet or passport. Aadhaar accepts marksheets for name and date of birth (not for address).
  • Father's or husband's name: check this too. In our experience, if it differs between two documents, the application gets rejected.

Before you change anything, put all your documents side by side: Aadhaar, PAN, bank passbook, EPF passbook, marksheet and birth certificate. Note every difference. To see which document counts for what, use Documents required for Aadhaar. To compare your PAN and Aadhaar names letter by letter, try our PAN vs Aadhaar name checker.

In what order should you fix your records?

Start with Aadhaar if it is wrong. PAN linking, bank KYC and EPF all compare your details with Aadhaar. If you fix PAN first and Aadhaar later, PAN can fall out of match again.

The fixing order
  1. Pick your master document (birth certificate or marksheet; correct name spelling)
  2. Does Aadhaar match the master? No: fix Aadhaar first
  3. Fix PAN, then link PAN with Aadhaar
  4. Update KYC at your bank; check Aadhaar seeding
  5. Correct your EPF profile
  6. Update the rest: insurance, demat, ration card, others
  1. Fix Aadhaar (if it is wrong)

At an Aadhaar centre, ₹75. After the update, download the new e-Aadhaar. If your year of birth changed, the PDF password changes too: first 4 letters of your name in CAPITALS plus the new year. Check it with our PDF password helper.

  2. Fix PAN and link it

Correct PAN through Protean or UTIITSL: our PAN guide covers changing the name in PAN and correcting the date of birth in PAN. Then link it with Aadhaar. See Link Aadhaar with PAN.

  3. Update your bank

Bank records don't change when Aadhaar changes. Update KYC at the branch, and check which account your Aadhaar is seeded to.

  4. Correct EPF

If your EPF profile is Aadhaar-verified, you can self-correct it. See Link Aadhaar with EPF/UAN.

  5. Update everything else

Insurance, demat, ration card, voter ID and any scheme you get money from. Each one is a separate request.

How do you fix your name or date of birth on Aadhaar?

Name and date of birth changes are done only at an Aadhaar centre. The Aadhaar App can't do them yet; UIDAI says they "may be added in phases". The fee is ₹75, or free with a biometric update (₹125).

Get it right the first time

You can change your date of birth on Aadhaar only once in your life, and your name twice. Gender is also once. Check every letter and digit on the operator's screen before you give your fingerprint.

Flow 1: Aadhaar is wrong
  1. Take the original master document (birth certificate, marksheet or the correct name proof)
  2. Is your Aadhaar limit still unused (DOB once, name twice)? No: use the Regional Office exception route
  3. The operator types the correction and scans your document
  4. Does the screen match your document letter for letter? No: get it corrected before you give biometrics
  5. Give your fingerprint or iris, pay ₹75, keep the acknowledgement slip
  6. Download the new e-Aadhaar, then fix PAN, bank and EPF

Which documents work for a name change?

UIDAI's new name rules (dated 18 Sep 2026, as reported in the news) group changes into five types:

Type of changeExampleWhat you need
Minor changeInitials, middle or last name, order of names, phonetic spellingProof of identity (PoI)
Typing mistake at the centreOperator typed it wrongAnnexure B affidavit (adult) or C (minor) + PoI. The correct name must match a document you gave earlier
Woman's surname after marriage or divorceSurname onlyAnnexure D + PoI
Removing an "urf" or aliasSecond nameAnnexure E (adult) or F (minor)
Complete changeA whole new nameGazette notification + PoI

Names are entered in block letters, exactly as on the document, with no titles (Mr, Dr) or special characters. Random capital letters and dots need no document. More detail: Change your name in Aadhaar.

Which documents work for a date of birth change?

  • DOB marked as declared or approximate: adults can use any listed DOB proof. Under-18s need a birth certificate (NRIs: birth certificate or Indian passport).
  • DOB already verified from a birth certificate: only a corrected birth certificate with the same registration number and registrar, plus the Annexure-I affidavit.
  • DOB verified from another document: the corrected same document, or a birth certificate plus affidavit.
  • Operator's typing mistake: resubmit the earlier document, or give the Annexure-II self-declaration.

Full rules: Change date of birth in Aadhaar.

What if you have already used your chances?

Operator typing mistakes, transliteration errors and regional-language changes don't count against the limit. If the limit really is used up, UIDAI has an exception route:

  1. Apply at a centre anyway

Registrars must accept the request. Keep the acknowledgement slip.

  2. Send the slip and proofs to the Regional Office

Email or post them to your UIDAI Regional Office, or call 1947. The RO checks your case, and UIDAI's Tech Centre reprocesses it. There is no fixed timeline.

For a name, the exception route accepts a marriage, divorce or adoption certificate, initials, reordering of the name, or a Gazette notification for a complete change.

Where to go

  • Centres: Aadhaar Seva Kendras, bank and post office Aadhaar centres, and CSCs running an authorised Aadhaar centre.
  • Booking: free at bookappointment.uidai.gov.in for listed centres; in our experience, others are walk-in. How it works: Book an Aadhaar appointment.
  • Timings: Aadhaar Seva Kendras usually open on Sundays too. Most work 9:30 am to 5:30 pm; the centre we visited breaks for lunch from 1 to 2 pm, so avoid arriving at 1 pm and check your centre before you go.

How do you fix a name or DOB mismatch on PAN?

PAN–Aadhaar linking needs your name, date of birth and gender to match. Date of birth and gender must be exactly the same; for a minor difference in the name, UIDAI says an OTP on your Aadhaar mobile is used to confirm. If Aadhaar matches your master document, correct PAN. Full list of link errors and fixes: PAN–Aadhaar link problems (fee paid but not linked, name/DOB mismatch).

Flow 2: PAN is wrong
  1. Make sure Aadhaar is correct first
  2. Request a PAN correction with Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL
  3. Wait until the corrected PAN details show
  4. Does the PAN–Aadhaar link succeed now?No: biometric verification at a PAN service centre
  5. PAN linked; inform your bank and broker
  1. Apply for a PAN correction

Use the PAN correction service of Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL, the two PAN agencies. Give the correct name, date of birth or gender exactly as on your master document.

  2. Or verify at a PAN service centre

A Protean or UTIITSL PAN service centre can link PAN and Aadhaar with biometric authentication when the online match fails.

  3. Link PAN with Aadhaar

On the e-filing portal, use Link Aadhaar and the OTP on your Aadhaar mobile. If the late fee applies, pay ₹1,000 first and wait 4–5 days. Steps: Link Aadhaar with PAN; fee payment and PAN-side steps in detail: link PAN with Aadhaar (₹1,000 fee).

PAN wrongly linked to someone else's Aadhaar? Contact your jurisdictional Assessing Officer at the Income Tax Department.

Why a PAN mismatch hurts

  • A PAN that must be linked but isn't becomes inoperative (see inoperative PAN): no tax refund, no interest on refunds, and higher TDS and TCS.
  • It is also reported that Form 15G/15H gets refused and demat accounts get blocked.
  • For investors, an unlinked PAN reportedly downgrades your KYC status from "KYC Validated" to "KYC Registered".
  • PANs taken with an Aadhaar Enrolment ID had to give the Aadhaar number by 31 Dec 2025, or became inoperative from 1 Jan 2026.

How do you fix a mismatch with your bank?

Banks keep their own copy of your details. Changing Aadhaar does not change the bank record. Visit your branch with the corrected Aadhaar and update your KYC.

There are two different things at a bank, and people mix them up:

LinkedSeeded
What it isAadhaar given for bank KYCAadhaar mapped to your account in NPCI's mapper
How many accountsCan be severalOnly one account
What it doesProves who you are to the bankDecides which account receives DBT (subsidy and scheme) money
  • Check seeding: myAadhaar is reported to show a Bank Seeding Status (such as Active, Inactive or No record). NPCI's BASE portal (npci.org.in) shows status and mapping history.
  • Move DBT to another account: the BASE portal or your bank can seed, de-seed or move Aadhaar between banks.
  • More: Bank seeding and DBT not received.

How do you fix a name or DOB mismatch in EPF?

EPFO said in January 2025 that members whose profile is Aadhaar-verified can correct their details themselves, without documents. Other cases go through EPFO's Joint Declaration process (rules set by an EPFO order of 13 Aug 2025).

Flow 3: EPF is wrong
  1. Make sure Aadhaar is correct and linked to your UAN
  2. Is your UAN activated? No: activate it in UMANG with face authentication
  3. Is your EPF profile Aadhaar-verified?No: use the Joint Declaration route
  4. Correct your name or DOB in your member profile, no documents needed
  5. EPF record matches Aadhaar
  • UAN activation: since 1 Aug 2025, new UANs are allotted or activated only through the UMANG app with face authentication. Activation was removed from the member portal on 3 Jul 2026.
  • No smartphone? We haven't seen an offline option. You can activate the UAN on a family member's smartphone, because it uses your face.
  • Joint Declaration: if your profile isn't Aadhaar-verified, ask your employer or EPFO office for the current Joint Declaration process.
  • More: Link Aadhaar with EPF/UAN.

Does a small spelling difference matter?

Sometimes. A slight difference such as "Mohd" and "Mohammad" is sometimes accepted and sometimes rejected. You can't predict it, so it's safer to make the spellings match.

From our counter

Centres accept a 10th or 12th marksheet as proof of name and date of birth by looking at the paper; we haven't seen an online check with the board. If your name is spelled slightly differently on two documents, like Mohd and Mohammad, it is sometimes accepted and sometimes rejected. A different father's or husband's name on two documents gets the application rejected. Since the new DOB rules, older documents are still accepted for updates depending on age, but for new enrolments we see a birth certificate being asked for (this can vary).

What problems do people face, and how do you fix them?

Living outside India?

Fixing a mismatch from abroad

  • Aadhaar name and DOB changes are done only at a centre, so plan them for your next visit to India.
  • For NRIs, an Indian passport counts as proof of identity and date of birth. An under-18 NRI with a declared DOB can use a birth certificate or Indian passport.
  • Non-residents under the Income-tax Act are exempt from PAN–Aadhaar linking. If you link voluntarily, the late fee applies.
  • Your PAN, bank and EPF corrections follow the same order as above.

Region not right?

Warning

Never use false documents

  • Never use a fake or edited certificate to change your name or date of birth. In age-fraud cases, the DOB update is rejected and the Aadhaar may be deactivated. Getting it back needs the Regional Office, a full biometric update and more (see Aadhaar deactivated? Reactivate).
  • Forging Aadhaar documents is a crime. A café owner was reportedly arrested for it in 2025.
  • Ignore SMS or WhatsApp links promising "Aadhaar correction from home". Name and DOB changes need a centre.
  • No one from UIDAI, a bank or EPFO will call asking for your OTP or Aadhaar number.

Frequently asked questions

Which should I correct first, Aadhaar or PAN?

Correct whichever one disagrees with your birth certificate or marksheet. If both are wrong, fix Aadhaar first, because PAN linking checks against Aadhaar.

Can I change my name or date of birth on Aadhaar online?

No. Name and date of birth changes are done only at an Aadhaar centre. UIDAI says they may be added to the app in phases.

How many times can I change my DOB on Aadhaar?

Only once in your life. Name can be changed twice and gender once. Operator typing mistakes don't count against the limit.

Is Aadhaar valid as proof of date of birth?

No. News reports say the Supreme Court held in 2024 that Aadhaar is not proof of date of birth, and that EPFO stopped accepting it for that in January 2024. Use your birth certificate or marksheet.

Will my bank details change after I correct Aadhaar?

No. Update your KYC at the bank branch with the corrected Aadhaar. Also check which account your Aadhaar is seeded to for DBT.

Can I fix my EPF details without documents?

Yes, if your EPF profile is Aadhaar-verified. EPFO allows self-correction in that case. Otherwise, use the Joint Declaration process.

My name is "Mohd" on one document and "Mohammad" on another. Is that a problem?

It might be. At our counter, such small differences are sometimes accepted and sometimes rejected. Making the spellings match is safer.

Does gender also have to match for PAN–Aadhaar linking?

Yes. UIDAI says name, date of birth and gender must match, and date of birth and gender must be exactly the same. Fix whichever record is wrong; on Aadhaar, gender can be changed only once.

What if my PAN is linked to someone else's Aadhaar?

Contact your jurisdictional Assessing Officer at the Income Tax Department.

How much does an Aadhaar name or DOB correction cost?

₹75 at a centre. It is free if you do it together with a biometric update, which costs ₹125.

Bottom line

Pick one master document and make every record match it. Fix Aadhaar first if it is wrong, carefully, since DOB can change only once. Then correct PAN, your bank and EPF in that order. For Aadhaar help, call UIDAI's free helpline 1947.
