Which documents are accepted as address proof?

These come from UIDAI's official list for updates (List IV), with notes from our counter. The document must be currently valid, clear and show your name and the full new address. For every document and purpose, see Documents required for Aadhaar, or check yours with the Aadhaar document checker.

DocumentAccepted?What our counter checks
Electricity, water, gas, landline, postpaid or broadband billYesAt most 3 months old (strictly enforced). UIDAI's rule is a document in your own name; in our experience a bill in your father's or family's name is also accepted, a landlord's is not
Bank passbook, or bank / credit card / post office statementYesPassbook of a scheduled commercial or state co-operative bank with your name and photo, stamped by the bank. Statements: at most 3 months old. Valid for updates only, not for a new Aadhaar
Rent, lease or leave-and-licence agreementYesRegistered or unregistered both count. In our experience a simple notarised agreement is enough and the landlord's ID isn't needed
Property tax receipt, accommodation allotment letterYesAt most 1 year old
Life or medical insurance policyYesValid up to 1 year from the date of issue
Marriage certificateYes (update)Must show the address
Kisan photo passbook; MGNREGA job card with state domicile certificateYes (update)Job card alone is not accepted
Voter ID, passport, ration cardYesMust show the new address
Certificate in UIDAI's format from an MP, MLA, MLC, councillor, Gazetted officer (Group A or B), EPFO officer, Tehsildar, or your school/college head (students)YesAddress proof only. Valid only 3 months from issue; the format must be UIDAI's. Officers often refuse to sign, so plan ahead
Village head (gram pradhan) or village revenue officer certificate, UIDAI formatOn the list, often rejectedAllowed for rural areas, but at our counter we see many rejections
Printout of an e-document (e-voter ID, e-ration card)Yes, at a centreThe printout must show a valid digital signature (green tick)
DigiLocker copy on your phoneNo, at a centreIn our experience centres want the physical original
10th/12th marksheet, degree certificateNoAccepted for name and date of birth, not for address
PAN cardNoPAN is not on UIDAI's document list for any purpose (it has no address)
From our counter

The documents we see rejected most: a gazetted-officer certificate in the wrong format, an old electricity bill or one in another person's name, a bank passbook without photo or stamp, and a rent agreement without a notary stamp.

How do you update your address online with your own document?

Online address update, step by step
  1. Log in to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in (or open the Aadhaar App)
  2. Enter the 6-digit OTP from your registered mobile
  3. Choose the address update option and the document-based route
  4. Type the new address exactly as on your proof
  5. Is your scan clear, in colour and uncropped? No: rescan; blurred or cropped scans are the top rejection reason
  6. Pay ₹75 and save the SRN
  7. New address on e-Aadhaar, in our experience in about a week
  1. Log in with your Aadhaar number and OTP

Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and log in. The OTP comes to your registered mobile. In the Aadhaar App, log in to your profile and pick the address update option.

  2. Choose the address update

Pick the address update option and the route with your own document (not the Head of Family route). Read the instructions and continue.

  3. Type the new address in English

Fill each field to match the document: house number, street, landmark, area, village or town, post office and PIN code. The post office and PIN code are mandatory. UIDAI turns it into your regional language automatically (11 languages); check that version before you continue.

The C/O (care of) field is optional. You can leave it empty or remove an old one.

  4. Upload a clear colour scan of the proof

Choose the document type and upload a full, sharp colour scan or photo: all four corners, no glare, nothing cut off.

  5. Pay ₹75 and save the SRN

Pay online and note the Service Request Number (SRN): "S" followed by 13 digits.

You'll know it worked when Check Enrolment or Update Status finds your SRN.

How does the Head of Family (HoF) route work?

UIDAI allows this route when you have no address proof of your own but live with a family member whose Aadhaar already shows the new address. That person is the Head of Family; you borrow their address. UIDAI's 2026 forms say the HoF must be 18 or older and your mother, father, legal guardian, spouse, child/ward or sibling. (For a new child's enrolment the rule is narrower: only the mother, father or legal guardian.)

Two people, one request
  1. You log in to myAadhaar (or the Aadhaar App) and choose the Head of Family based address update
  2. Enter the HoF's Aadhaar number and upload a relationship proof showing both names
  3. Pay the fee and note the SRN
  4. Tell the HoF to log in to their own myAadhaar
  5. HoF approves within 30 days (Services → Family member request)? No: the request closes automatically and the fee is not refunded
  6. Your Aadhaar gets the HoF's address
  • Relationship proof: a document from UIDAI's list that shows both your name and the HoF's (for example a marriage certificate for a spouse). The list also accepts a self-declaration by an immediate family member living at the same address.
  • Fee: UIDAI's Aadhaar App FAQ lists ₹75 for an address update in the app, by own document or HoF. On myAadhaar the HoF request cost ₹50 when it was launched in 2023; we could not confirm today's figure there. Either way the fee is not refunded if the HoF rejects or doesn't respond.
  • Tell the HoF beforehand. The most common failure is simply that they never open the request in time.

How do you update your address at an Aadhaar centre?

At the centre
  1. Take your Aadhaar and the original address proof
  2. Operator types the new address and scans the proof
  3. Does the address on screen match the document? No: ask for a correction before you give biometrics
  4. Give your fingerprint or iris
  5. Pay ₹75 → keep the acknowledgement slip
  6. Track with the number on your slip; in our experience the new address shows in about a week
  • Which centres? Aadhaar Seva Kendras, bank and post office Aadhaar centres, and CSCs running an authorised Aadhaar centre. A normal CSC or cyber café can't do updates.
  • Booking: free at bookappointment.uidai.gov.in for listed centres (up to 2 a month); others are walk-in. Steps: book an Aadhaar appointment.
  • Timings: Aadhaar Seva Kendras usually open on Sundays too and close on only about 10 holidays a year. UIDAI lists 9:30 am–5:30 pm; the centre we visit breaks for lunch from 1 to 2 pm.

How should you type the address so it isn't rejected?

At our counter, these four mistakes cause most address rejections:

MistakeExampleDo this instead
Wrong PIN codeThe PIN of the old area, or the head post office's PINCopy the PIN exactly from the proof
Address worded differently from the document"Near Shiv Mandir, Ward 5" when the bill says "Ward No. 5, Rampur"Use the same words and order as the proof
Too long, or parts repeatedTown name typed in three fieldsEach part once, in its own field
Landmark in the wrong fieldLandmark typed in the street fieldPut it only in the Landmark field, or leave it out

What if you're a tenant or have moved for work?

  • Tenants: UIDAI accepts registered or unregistered rent agreements. In our experience a simple notarised one works everywhere we know of, and you don't need the landlord's ID. A landlord's electricity bill is not accepted.
  • Your own bills or bank: a gas connection bill or a bank passbook or statement with the new address also works.
  • Living with relatives: use the Head of Family route.
  • Our advice for migrant workers: many keep their permanent home or village address in Aadhaar and give their current address separately in bank KYC and government forms, which usually accept two addresses. Update Aadhaar only if you've moved for good.

What happens after the update?

Why do address updates get rejected, and how do you fix it?

Rejection reasonWhat it usually meansWhat to do
Document not clearBlurred, cropped, dark or black-and-white scanRescan in colour with all corners visible and apply again
Address doesn't match the documentTyped in different words or orderType it exactly as on the proof (see how to type)
Invalid or wrong documentNot on the list, expired, or older than 3 months (bills)Use a document from the accepted list
Document not in your nameLandlord's or friend's billUse your own or family's bill, a notarised rent agreement, or the HoF route
HoF request expiredThe family member didn't approve within 30 daysApply again (new fee) and remind them to approve
Still "in progress" after 30 daysHeld for checksCall 1947 with your SRN or the number on your slip; if that fails, escalate the complaint

Updating your Indian address from abroad

  • The online route works from abroad if your registered Indian mobile still receives SMS.
  • You need an Indian address proof in your name (or a family member's Aadhaar for the HoF route).
  • No working Indian mobile? Update at a centre during your next visit to India. More for NRIs: Aadhaar for NRIs and OCI.

Warning

Address-update scams and frauds

  • Don't buy fake rent agreements or certificates. The Aadhaar form's declaration warns that false information can get your Aadhaar deactivated and lead to legal action, and news reports describe a centre caught creating Aadhaar with fake rent agreements.
  • Update only on uidai.gov.in or in UIDAI's Aadhaar App. Ignore WhatsApp links offering "address update from home". More: Aadhaar fraud and scams.
  • The fee is ₹75. Anyone asking more is overcharging; complain on 1947.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an Aadhaar address update cost?

₹75, online or at a centre. It's included free when you also do a biometric update (₹125).

How long does it take for the new address to show?

In our experience about a week on the downloadable e-Aadhaar; sometimes up to 30 days.

Can I update my address without any proof?

Use the Head of Family route if a family member's Aadhaar already has the new address. Otherwise you need a proof, such as a notarised rent agreement or a certificate in UIDAI's format.

Is a notarised rent agreement enough?

Yes. UIDAI accepts registered or unregistered rent agreements, and in our experience a simple notarised one is accepted without the landlord's ID.

Can I use my father's electricity bill?

In our experience, yes: a bill in your father's or family's name is accepted if it is at most 3 months old. A landlord's bill is not. If a centre refuses it, use the Head of Family route with your father as HoF.

Can my brother or sister be the Head of Family?

Yes. UIDAI's 2026 forms list a brother or sister aged 18 or older as a Head of Family for an address update, along with the mother, father, legal guardian, spouse and child/ward.

Is the C/O (care of) field compulsory?

No. It's optional; in our experience it can be left empty or removed online.

Will my ration card or voter ID change automatically?

No. Each has to be updated separately.

How many times can I change my address?

There's no lifetime limit on address updates.

Bottom line

With a working registered mobile and a clear proof typed exactly as written, an online address update usually goes through for ₹75. No proof? Use the Head of Family route or a centre. For help, UIDAI's free helpline is 1947.
