Which mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar?

Check this before anything else. At our counter, the most common reason a download fails is that the OTP goes to an old number the person no longer has.

Check the linked mobile in 4 steps
  1. Open myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and choose Verify Email/Mobile Number
  2. Enter your Aadhaar number and the mobile number you think is linked
  3. Type the captcha; an OTP comes to that mobile
  4. Does the site say the number matches your Aadhaar? No: update the mobile first
  5. You're ready to download

Another quick check: when you request any Aadhaar OTP, the screen shows the last digits of the linked number.

What are the ways to download e-Aadhaar?

There are four free online ways: myAadhaar, the new Aadhaar App, DigiLocker and UMANG. All of them need an OTP on your registered mobile. In our experience, the e-Aadhaar from each of them is accepted at banks and offices. Without that mobile, an Aadhaar centre is the fallback.

How do you download e-Aadhaar on myAadhaar?

Step 1 of 6

Open myAadhaar and tap Download Aadhaar

YouUIDAIOTP / SMS

  1. Open myAadhaar and tap Download Aadhaar. Type myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in yourself. Don't use links from WhatsApp or ads.
  2. Choose your number type and enter it. Pick Aadhaar Number, Enrolment ID or Virtual ID, then type it carefully.
  3. Type the captcha and tap Send OTP. If the captcha is hard to read, tap the refresh icon for a new one.
  4. Enter the 6-digit OTP from your registered mobile. Never share it with anyone, including shop staff on the phone.
  5. Choose masked or regular, then Verify & Download. Tick "masked" if you only need to show identity.
  6. Open the PDF with your password. First 4 letters of your name in capitals plus year of birth, for example SURE1990.
The download flow at a glance
  1. Open myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in → Download Aadhaar
  2. Pick Aadhaar number, EID or VID and type it
  3. Type the captcha → Send OTP
  4. Did the OTP arrive within 2–3 minutes? No: see the fixes
  5. Enter the 6-digit OTP
  6. Tick "masked" if you only need ID → Verify & Download
  7. PDF saved; open it with your password
  1. Open the official download page

Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and choose Download Aadhaar. You don't need to log in first.

You'll know you're on the right site when the address ends in uidai.gov.in.

  2. Enter your Aadhaar number, EID or VID

Select the type of number you have and type it. An Enrolment ID (EID) only works after your Aadhaar has been generated. A Virtual ID (VID) is a 16-digit stand-in number; get it by SMS if you prefer not to type your Aadhaar number.

If it says the number is invalid: check every digit. For an EID, the date and time printed on your slip are part of the 28 digits.

  3. Type the captcha and request the OTP

Copy the letters exactly, including capitals. Then tap Send OTP.

  4. Enter the 6-digit OTP from your registered mobile

The OTP comes by SMS to the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar, not to any other number. It is valid only for a short time.

You'll know it worked when the page shows the masked-Aadhaar option and the download button.

If no OTP comes: see Problems and fixes.

  5. Choose masked or regular and download

Tick masked Aadhaar if you only need to show identity. Leave it unticked for the passport office, banks or any office that needs your full number. Tap Verify & Download.

  6. Open the PDF with the password

Use the password rule below. Save the file somewhere private on your phone.

You'll know it worked when your photo, name and QR code appear.

How do you download e-Aadhaar in the Aadhaar App?

UIDAI's new Aadhaar App replaced the old mAadhaar app, which has been removed from the Play Store. Our customers mostly use the new app to view and download e-Aadhaar and to update their mobile or address.

First-time setup, then download
  1. Install "Aadhaar" by UIDAI from Google Play or the App Store
  2. Enter your Aadhaar number
  3. OTP arrived on the registered mobile? No: wait and retry; check the linked number
  4. Face scan passed? No: try daylight, remove glasses, keep still
  5. Set a 6-digit app PIN
  6. Open your profile → download or show e-Aadhaar
  • Phone needed: Android 9 or newer, or iOS 16 or newer.
  • Common problems we see: the OTP arrives late or not at all, and the face scan fails. Good light and a steady phone help.
  • Family: one phone can hold up to 5 profiles. In our experience, to add a family member, that member's OTP and face scan are needed, not the phone owner's.
  • Data from mAadhaar does not carry over. Register again in the new app.
  • No smartphone? Our customers use a family member's phone, a cyber café, or an Aadhaar centre.

How do you get e-Aadhaar from DigiLocker or UMANG?

Both are free government apps. In our experience, an e-Aadhaar from DigiLocker or UMANG is accepted at banks and offices.

DigiLocker in 4 steps
  1. Open the DigiLocker app or digilocker.gov.in and sign in
  2. Search for "Aadhaar" among your documents
  3. First time only: link your Aadhaar with the OTP on your registered mobile
  4. Open your Aadhaar → download

UMANG: open the UMANG app, search for Aadhaar, choose the e-Aadhaar download service and confirm with the OTP on your registered mobile.

Important

An Aadhaar centre wants physical original documents as proof. A DigiLocker copy on your phone is not accepted there.

How do you get your Virtual ID (VID) by SMS?

You can download e-Aadhaar with a 16-digit VID instead of your Aadhaar number. Send an SMS to 1947 from your registered mobile: GVID plus the last 4 digits of your Aadhaar creates a VID; RVID plus the last 4 digits sends you your current one.

SMS helper: get your VID

Type GVID 1234 (new VID) or RVID 1234 (current VID), using the last 4 digits of your Aadhaar, and send it to 1947.

This works only on your phone. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Never type your full Aadhaar number into any website except uidai.gov.in.

The VID arrives by SMS. Only one VID is valid at a time. A new one can be made after at least one day. UIDAI's own example: Aadhaar 9876-5432-1987 → GVID 1987. For every 1947 SMS format, use our SMS command generator.

What is the e-Aadhaar PDF password?

The password is the first 4 letters of your English name in CAPITAL letters followed by your year of birth (YYYY), exactly as printed on Aadhaar. Spaces are skipped. A dot counts as a character.

For tricky names and more examples, see our e-Aadhaar PDF password helper.

Name on AadhaarYear of birthPasswordWhy
SURESH KUMAR1990SURE1990First 4 letters
SAI KUMAR1990SAIK1990The space is skipped
P. KUMAR1990P.KU1990The dot counts
MD ALI1985MDAL1985Space skipped, next letters used
RIA1990RIA1990Short name: use all letters
From our counter

We see four password mistakes every week: typing the name in small letters; typing the full date of birth instead of only the year; getting confused by dots, spaces or short names (K. RAM is K.RA, MD ALI is MDAL); and using the Hindi name or a nickname instead of the English name printed on Aadhaar.

This works only on your device. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Never type your Aadhaar number here.

Should you download masked or regular Aadhaar?

A masked Aadhaar is available only as e-Aadhaar. It hides the first 8 digits. Full comparison of every form: e-Aadhaar vs PVC vs masked Aadhaar.

Which form should you carry? Our customers care most about where it is accepted and what it costs:

FormCostGood to know
e-Aadhaar PDF on your phone₹0Show or share when asked
e-Aadhaar printout from a shop₹30–50A fair shop charge in our experience (it can vary). Accepted everywhere we know of
Biometric-verified print at an Aadhaar centre₹30–₹40No mobile needed. UIDAI's own Seva Kendras list ₹40; don't pay more than the official fee
Aadhaar PVC card (by post)₹75No hologram since Oct 2025; in our experience the passport office may refuse it (this can vary). PVC card guide

Is a downloaded e-Aadhaar valid?

Yes. UIDAI states that e-Aadhaar is as valid as the physical Aadhaar letter (UIDAI circular of 28 April 2017). It is digitally signed by UIDAI. In Adobe Reader you can verify the signature (green tick); the certificate is issued by "(n)Code Solutions CA 2014".

Anyone can check the details by scanning the QR code with UIDAI's Aadhaar App. The QR holds only the last 4 digits of your Aadhaar, plus your name, address, gender, date of birth, photo and masked mobile and email.

Important

Aadhaar proves identity. It is not proof of citizenship, and the Supreme Court has held (2024, as reported) that it is not proof of date of birth.

How do you verify the digital signature (green tick) and print e-Aadhaar?

Many banks, the passport office and other government offices accept a printed e-Aadhaar only when its digital signature is verified, so the print shows a green tick instead of a question mark. A fresh download always shows "Validity Unknown" first. That does not mean the file is fake: your PDF reader simply hasn't been told to trust UIDAI's certificate yet.

From "Validity Unknown" to a green tick
  1. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader on a computer
  2. Right-click the yellow "?" → Validate Signature → Signature Properties
  3. Show Signer's Certificate → Trust tab → Add to Trusted Certificates → OK
  4. Validate again: green tick? No: you're in a browser viewer; use Adobe Reader
  5. Print with "Document and Markups" so the tick shows
  1. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader on a computer

Use the free Adobe Acrobat Reader (Windows or Mac) and enter the PDF password. Don't use the browser's built-in viewer.

No tick option? Chrome, Edge and most phone apps can't verify the signature. Use a computer, or ask a cyber café or Aadhaar centre to do it.

  2. Find the signature with the question mark

On the e-Aadhaar page, look for the signature box with a yellow ? and the words "Validity Unknown".

  3. Right-click it and open Signature Properties

Right-click the question mark and choose Validate Signature. In the box that opens, click Signature Properties.

  4. Trust UIDAI's certificate

Click Show Signer's Certificate, open the Trust tab and click Add to Trusted Certificates. Confirm with OK; if a box asks, tick Use this certificate as a trusted root and click OK again.

  5. Validate the signature again

Back in Signature Properties, click Validate Signature, then Close.

You'll know it worked when the question mark turns into a green tick and Adobe says "Signature valid".

  6. Print from Adobe Reader

Press Ctrl + P (Cmd + P on Mac). Choose Actual size and keep Comments & Forms on Document and Markups so the tick is printed. A colour print is clearest.

You'll know it worked when the green tick is visible on the paper.

Trusting the certificate is usually needed only once per computer; later e-Aadhaar files then show the tick straight away. It does not change the file.

What if your mobile number is not registered with Aadhaar?

You cannot download e-Aadhaar online without the registered mobile, because the OTP goes only there. Here is what works, in the order we suggest at our counter (full guide: download Aadhaar without a registered mobile):

No registered mobile: your two routes
  1. Go to an Aadhaar centre with your Aadhaar number (or the card)
  2. Need the copy today? No: update your mobile there (₹75), then download at home
  3. Ask for a biometric-verified e-Aadhaar print (₹30–₹40)
  4. Give your fingerprint or iris
  5. Collect the printed e-Aadhaar
OptionCostWhat you getGood to know

What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?

At our counter, these four problems are the most common, in this order: the OTP doesn't arrive, the UIDAI site is down, the captcha or PDF password fails, and the registered mobile isn't with the person.

Your situationWhat it usually meansWhat to do

Myth

"You can download Aadhaar with just your name and date of birth." You can't. Every download needs your Aadhaar number, EID or VID plus an OTP, or a visit to an Aadhaar centre. Sites that promise "download by name and DOB" only lead you to the Retrieve EID/UID service, which also needs your registered mobile or email.

When should you visit an Aadhaar centre instead?

  • If no mobile is linked, or the linked number is lost: update it (₹75), or get a biometric-verified print (₹30–₹40).
  • If your details are wrong on the downloaded copy: update them first (name, date of birth and gender need a centre), then download again.
  • If your Aadhaar is not generated long after enrolment: ask at the centre or call 1947 with your EID.

Aadhaar Seva Kendras usually open on Sundays too and close on only about 10 holidays a year, such as 26 January, 15 August and 2 October. The centre we visit works 9:30 am–1 pm and 2–5:30 pm, so avoid arriving at 1 pm. Check your centre before you go.

Living outside India?

What NRIs and people abroad should know

  • The website works from anywhere, but the OTP goes only to the Indian mobile number on your Aadhaar. Keep it active on international roaming.
  • If that number is closed, you need to update the mobile at a centre during your next visit to India.
  • Use a masked copy when a hotel or agency abroad asks for Indian ID.

Warning

Avoid scams when downloading Aadhaar

  • Downloading e-Aadhaar is free on UIDAI's site. Nobody can sell you an "official download".
  • Enter your Aadhaar number and OTP only on pages ending in uidai.gov.in.
  • UIDAI will never call you for your OTP. Never tell an OTP to anyone on a call, even if they say they are from UIDAI or a bank.
  • Don't install screen-sharing apps (AnyDesk-type) because a caller asks you to.
  • More warning signs: common Aadhaar frauds and scams.

Frequently asked questions

Is downloading e-Aadhaar free?

Yes. Downloading on myAadhaar, the Aadhaar App, DigiLocker or UMANG costs nothing. A PVC card costs ₹75, and a biometric-verified print at a centre costs ₹30–₹40 (UIDAI's own Seva Kendras list ₹40).

Is a printout of e-Aadhaar accepted like the original card?

UIDAI states e-Aadhaar is as valid as the physical letter. In our experience a printout is accepted almost everywhere. Banks and the passport office want the digital signature verified (green tick) first.

Can I download Aadhaar without my registered mobile number?

Not online. Get a biometric-verified e-Aadhaar print at an Aadhaar centre, or update your mobile there (₹75) and download a day or two later.

Can I download Aadhaar with just my name and date of birth?

No, that's a myth. You can recover a lost Aadhaar number or EID with your name and registered mobile or email, and then download with an OTP.

What is the password for the Aadhaar PDF?

The first 4 letters of your English name in capitals plus your year of birth. For example, SURESH KUMAR born 1990 uses SURE1990.

Is masked Aadhaar accepted at the passport office?

In our experience, no (this can vary). Take a regular e-Aadhaar printout with a verified signature. Masked Aadhaar is accepted almost everywhere else.

Can I download a family member's Aadhaar?

Only with their OTP, which goes to their registered mobile. Ask for their consent and keep the file private.

Can I download Aadhaar using my Enrolment ID?

Yes, once your Aadhaar has been generated. Enter the full 28-digit EID, including the date and time from your enrolment slip.

Will the 1947 helpline tell me my Aadhaar number?

No. In our experience 1947 sends callers to an Aadhaar centre or to the Retrieve EID/UID service on myAadhaar.

Does the old mAadhaar app still work?

mAadhaar has been removed from the Play Store. Use UIDAI's new Aadhaar App and register again; old data does not carry over.

Bottom line

If your mobile is registered, downloading e-Aadhaar takes a few minutes and costs nothing. If it isn't, one visit to an Aadhaar centre fixes it, because almost every online Aadhaar service depends on that OTP. For help, UIDAI's free helpline is 1947.
