What is the Aadhaar 10-year document update?
When you got your Aadhaar, you gave a proof of identity (PoI) and a proof of address (PoA). The 10-year document update lets you submit fresh copies of these proofs.
- How often: UIDAI says holders "may" update their PoI and PoA at least once every 10 years.
- What it covers: only your documents and written (demographic) details. It does not touch your photo, fingerprints or iris.
- Cost: free on myAadhaar until 14 June 2027; ₹75 at an Aadhaar centre.
Changing a detail, such as your address or name, is a different request. It is a demographic update and costs ₹75. See Aadhaar update: fees & limits for every update type.
Who needs the 10-year document update, and who doesn't?
Find the row that fits you. We list only what UIDAI's rules and our counter experience support.
| Your situation | Do you need it? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Your Aadhaar was made 10 or more years ago, and you have never refreshed your documents | Yes, it's meant for you | Do it free on myAadhaar before 14 June 2027 |
| Your Aadhaar is 10+ years old and a bank or other KYC is stuck | Yes, do it soon | In our experience, some KYC can get stuck when this update isn't done, so do it on myAadhaar |
| Your Aadhaar is less than 10 years old | Not due yet | The 10-year rule doesn't apply yet |
| You already did a document update within the last 10 years | Not due yet | The next one falls 10 years after it |
| You changed your address or name with a document, but never did a "document update" | Not confirmed | We haven't seen UIDAI say whether this counts. The online update costs nothing until 14 June 2027 |
| You want to change your name, address, date of birth or gender | No, that's a different update | Use the matching demographic update (₹75). See Aadhaar update |
| Your photo is old or your fingerprints keep failing | No, not covered | Get a biometric update (₹125) at a centre. See Photo & biometric update |
Is the Aadhaar document update still free?
The online document update on myAadhaar is free until 14 June 2027. UIDAI extended it in May 2026. At an Aadhaar centre the same update costs ₹75.
At our counter, a document update costs ₹75. You may hear that the free online update ended on 14 June 2026. That was the earlier deadline; UIDAI's fee chart now says 14 June 2027. Before you pay anyone, log in to myAadhaar and look at the fee it shows.

What happens if you don't do the 10-year update?
- Your Aadhaar is not deactivated. In our experience, skipping the document update does not switch your Aadhaar off.
- Some services can get stuck. Our team sees some services and KYC checks get held up until the documents are updated.
- UIDAI's own word is "may". We haven't seen a UIDAI penalty or deadline for skipping it.

Should you update online or at a centre?
Answer up to three questions to find your route.
| If… | Then |
|---|---|
| Your documents are less than 10 years old | Not due yet |
| You want to change a detail | Use the matching update (₹75); see Aadhaar update |
| Your registered mobile gets OTPs | Free on myAadhaar until 14 June 2027 |
| No OTP or no linked mobile | Aadhaar centre, ₹75 |
Which documents can you upload for the document update?
You need one proof of identity (PoI) and one proof of address (PoA). Updates use UIDAI's List IV, which also accepts some documents that a new Aadhaar doesn't. Here are common ones.
| Document | PoI | PoA | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indian passport | ✓ | ✓ | Also proof of date of birth |
| Voter ID / e-voter ID | ✓ | ✓ | UIDAI requires it to be verifiable on the Election Commission site |
| Ration / PDS photo card, e-ration card | ✓ | ✓ | Must carry your photo |
| Kisan photo passbook | ✓ | ✓ | Updates only |
| Driving licence | ✓ | Identity only | |
| 10th/12th marksheet, board or university certificate | ✓ | Never proof of address | |
| Electricity, water, gas, landline, postpaid or broadband bill | ✓ | At most 3 months old | |
| Bank photo passbook (scheduled commercial or state co-operative bank) | ✓ | Updates only; name and photo, cross-stamped by the bank | |
| Bank, credit card or post office statement | ✓ | Updates only; at most 3 months old | |
| Rent, lease or leave-and-licence agreement | ✓ | Registered or unregistered | |
| PAN card / e-PAN | Not accepted | Not on UIDAI's list at all | |
Rules for every document:
- It must be valid, in your own name, not cancelled, and checkable with whoever issued it.
- A PoI must show at least your name and photo.
- Your name and date of birth must match across your documents.
These documents get rejected most at our counter: gazetted-officer certificates in the wrong format, and old bills or bills in someone else's name. So do bank passbooks without a photo or stamp, and rent agreements without a notary stamp. The usual reasons are a name spelled differently from Aadhaar, a blurred or cropped scan, a document that's too old, or no signature or stamp. A bill in your own, your father's or your family's name is accepted; a landlord's isn't, and the 3-month limit is strictly applied. At a centre, DigiLocker copies are not accepted, only physical originals. A printout of an e-document such as an e-voter ID or e-ration card works if the PDF shows a valid digital signature (green tick).

How do you do the document update online on myAadhaar?
You need your Aadhaar number, your registered mobile for the OTP, and clear colour scans of one PoI and one PoA. Menu labels on myAadhaar can change, so the names you see may differ from ours.
- Open myAadhaar and log in with your Aadhaar number
- Did the OTP arrive on your registered mobile? No: go to an Aadhaar centre or update your mobile first
- Choose the document update option
- Are the details shown correct? No: fix that detail with the matching update first
- Upload one PoI and one PoA: are the scans clear, in colour and uncropped? No: rescan; blurred or cropped scans get rejected
- Submit (₹0 until 14 June 2027) and note the SRN
-
Log in to myAadhaar with an OTP
Open myAadhaar and enter your Aadhaar number. The OTP goes to your registered mobile. Never share it with anyone.
-
Choose the document update option
Look for the option to update your documents. Its exact label may differ from what we describe.
-
Check your details
Read the name, date of birth and address shown. They should match the documents you're about to upload. If a detail is wrong, correct it with the matching update first.
-
Upload a clear colour scan of a PoI and a PoA
Pick documents from UIDAI's list. Scan the full page in colour: all four corners, no glare, nothing cut off.
UIDAI rejects an online address update if the document is not on the list, not in your name, or not a clear colour scan. Expect the same checks here.
-
Submit and note the SRN
The fee should show ₹0 until 14 June 2027. If you are asked to pay, check that you chose the document update and not another service.
You'll know it worked when you get a service request number (SRN). Save it to track your update.
UIDAI is moving some services to myaadhaarbeta.uidai.gov.in. Both are official UIDAI sites.
What happens after you submit?
- Track it on UIDAI's Check Enrolment or Update Status page: choose the SRN option for an online request ('S' followed by 13 digits), or enter the number printed on your centre slip.
- How long? In our experience, an address update usually shows on e-Aadhaar in about a week, sometimes up to 30 days (this can vary). We have no separate figure for document updates.
- Lost the number? Log in to myAadhaar with an OTP and look for Update History (beta). It is reported to list past requests with date and type.
- Rejected? Fix the reason (see Problems and fixes) and submit again with a better document or scan.
More on status and rejections: Update status & rejection fixes.
What problems come up with the document update, and how do you fix them?
UIDAI lists four reasons for rejecting an online address update. The document is not on the list, not in your name, doesn't match the address typed, or isn't a clear colour scan. The same checks are a good guide here. In our experience most online address updates go through. The rejected ones usually had a blurred or cropped scan, details typed differently from the document, or a wrong or invalid document.
| Your situation | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Someone says the free online update has ended | 14 June 2026 was the earlier deadline; it now runs to 14 June 2027 | Check the fee shown on myAadhaar before you pay |
| OTP doesn't arrive, or no mobile is linked | You can't log in to myAadhaar | Go to a centre (₹75), or update your mobile number first |
| Rejected: document not on the list | For example PAN, which isn't accepted at all | Use a document from UIDAI's list |
| Rejected: blurred or cropped scan | UIDAI needs a clear colour scan | Rescan in colour, all four corners visible |
| Name spelled differently on the document and on Aadhaar | Name and date of birth must match across documents | Correct the document first, or correct Aadhaar with a name update |
| Address on the document differs from Aadhaar | This needs an address change, not just a refresh | Use the address update (₹75) |
| Bill older than 3 months, or in your landlord's name | In our experience this is strictly rejected | Use a recent bill in your own or your family's name |
| Bank passbook without photo or stamp | One of the documents we see rejected most | Ask the bank to add a photo and stamp it |
| Rent agreement without a notary stamp | UIDAI accepts unregistered agreements, but in our experience un-notarised ones often get rejected (this can vary) | Get it notarised |
| Showed a DigiLocker copy at the centre | In our experience centres want physical originals | Carry the original, or a printout showing a valid digital signature |
| A message says your Aadhaar will be blocked unless you update | Scam. Skipping the update doesn't deactivate Aadhaar | Ignore it; never share your OTP. See the warning box |
When should you visit an Aadhaar centre instead?
- No OTP: your registered mobile is lost, switched off or not linked.
- Online keeps failing: your upload was rejected and you'd like an operator to check your documents.
- You need other changes too: name, date of birth, gender, photo or fingerprints need a centre anyway.
- You prefer help: the centre does the document update for ₹75.
- Find an Aadhaar centre with the centre locator
- Do you have the original PoI and PoA with you?No: bring physical originals; a DigiLocker copy on your phone isn't accepted
- Ask for a document update; the operator scans your documents
- Are the details on screen correct? No: ask for a correction before you confirm
- Pay ₹75 and keep the acknowledgement slip
- Track the update with the number on your slip
-
Find an Aadhaar centre
Use UIDAI's centre locator on the Bhuvan site to find one near you. You can also book an appointment at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra; booking is free.
-
Carry the original documents
Take your original PoI and PoA. In our experience, a printout of an e-document works only if it shows a valid digital signature.
-
Pay ₹75 and keep the slip
Ask for a receipt. Keep the acknowledgement slip: the number printed on it is what you use to track the update.
You'll know it worked when you have the acknowledgement slip. You need it to track the update.
The 10-year document update for NRIs
- The online update works from abroad if your registered mobile still receives the OTP. It is free until 14 June 2027.
- For NRI enrolment, UIDAI accepts only a valid Indian passport as proof of identity. We haven't seen a separate NRI rule for the document update, so your passport is the safe choice.
- For enrolment, if the passport has no Indian address, UIDAI allows another address proof from the list.
- No OTP on your registered mobile? Do the update at an Aadhaar centre on your next visit to India (₹75). More for NRIs: Aadhaar for NRIs & OCI.
Region not right?
"Update now or your Aadhaar will be blocked" scams
- Calls or messages saying your Aadhaar "will be blocked" unless you update are fake. Skipping the 10-year update doesn't deactivate Aadhaar.
- Never share your OTP or Aadhaar number with a caller.
- Ignore SMS or WhatsApp links offering a document update. Use only myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in or uidai.gov.in.
- Don't install screen-sharing apps (AnyDesk-type) because a stranger asks you to. More scam patterns: Aadhaar fraud & scams.
- The online document update is free until 14 June 2027. At a centre the fee is ₹75; complain on 1947 if asked for more.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Aadhaar 10-year document update mandatory?
UIDAI says holders "may" update their PoI and PoA at least once every 10 years. Skipping it doesn't deactivate your Aadhaar. In our experience, though, some services and KYC can get stuck until you do it.
Is the Aadhaar document update free?
Yes, on myAadhaar until 14 June 2027. At an Aadhaar centre it costs ₹75. Check the fee shown on myAadhaar before you pay anyone.
Will my Aadhaar be blocked if I don't update my documents?
No. In our experience the Aadhaar is not deactivated. Messages that say otherwise are scams; never share your OTP.
My Aadhaar is only 6 years old. Do I need it?
Not yet. UIDAI's wording is at least once every 10 years, so it isn't due until your documents are 10 years old.
Can I change my address or name through the document update?
No. The document update refreshes your proofs. To change a detail, use the matching demographic update, which costs ₹75. See Update your address.
Which documents do I need?
One proof of identity and one proof of address from UIDAI's List IV, such as a passport, voter ID or ration card. PAN is not accepted. Name and date of birth must match across documents.
Can I do it without a registered mobile?
Not online, because myAadhaar needs an OTP. Go to an Aadhaar centre (₹75), or update your mobile number first.
Does it update my photo or fingerprints?
No. The document update covers documents and written details only. A photo or fingerprint update is a biometric update, ₹125 at a centre.
Can I use DigiLocker documents?
At a centre, in our experience, a DigiLocker copy on your phone isn't accepted; bring the original. A printout of an e-document works there if it shows a valid digital signature.
How do I track my document update?
On UIDAI's Check Enrolment or Update Status page: use the SRN for an online request, or the number printed on your centre slip.
Bottom line
If your Aadhaar documents are 10 or more years old, refresh them on myAadhaar while it's free, until 14 June 2027. You need one PoI, one PoA and an OTP on your registered mobile. Ignore "your Aadhaar will be blocked" messages, and call UIDAI's helpline 1947 if you're stuck.
