Is e-Aadhaar, PVC or Masked Aadhaar (Aadhar) Valid? Which One to Use?
Yes. UIDAI says the e-Aadhaar, the PVC card and the paper Aadhaar letter are equally valid. A masked e-Aadhaar shows only the last 4 digits. In our experience it works almost everywhere except the passport office. In our experience the passport office wants a full e-Aadhaar print, and banks and the passport office ask for a validated digital signature (green tick).
- e-Aadhaar & masked
- ₹0 to download
- PVC card
- ₹75
- PVC delivery
- UIDAI: up to 30 days · in our experience 15–30 days
- Printout
- About ₹30–50 at a shop (our estimate) · ₹30–₹40 at a centre

Is e-Aadhaar valid like the original Aadhaar card?
Yes. UIDAI says e-Aadhaar is as valid as the physical Aadhaar letter. This comes from a UIDAI circular dated 28 April 2017. The PDF is digitally signed by UIDAI, so anyone can check that it hasn't been changed.
- e-Aadhaar: the password-protected PDF you download. In our experience a printout of it is accepted too.
- PVC card: UIDAI says it has the same validity as the e-Aadhaar and the letter.
- Masked e-Aadhaar: the same signed PDF, with the first 8 digits hidden.
- DigiLocker and UMANG: in our experience, the e-Aadhaar from these apps is accepted at banks and offices.
The signature is issued by "(n)Code Solutions CA 2014". On a fresh download, Adobe Reader shows a question mark until you validate it. That doesn't mean the file is fake.
Aadhaar proves identity. It is not proof of citizenship. The Supreme Court has also held (2024, as reported) that it is not proof of date of birth.
"The Aadhaar card is changing to show only a photo and QR code." MeitY denied this rumour on 3 May 2026. Your current letter, e-Aadhaar and PVC card stay valid.
How do the five Aadhaar formats compare?
Our customers care most about two things: where a form is accepted, and what it costs and how fast they get it. This table answers both. Scroll sideways on a phone.
| Format | How to get it | Cost | Time | Where it's accepted | Where it's refused or doubted | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar letter (paper) | Posted to you after your Aadhaar is generated | ₹0 | UIDAI hands it to India Post within 10 days of generation | It is the original document. UIDAI treats e-Aadhaar and PVC as equal to it | No specific problems in our notes | Paper reprints have reportedly stopped. Keep it safe at home and carry a print |
| e-Aadhaar (PDF or print) | Download free on myAadhaar, the Aadhaar App, DigiLocker or UMANG with an OTP. No mobile? A biometric print at an Aadhaar centre | ₹0 PDF · ₹30–50 shop print · ₹30–₹40 centre print | A few minutes online; same visit at a centre | Accepted everywhere we know of, in our experience | Banks and the passport office ask for a validated signature (green tick) | Validate it in Adobe Reader before printing |
| Masked e-Aadhaar | Tick the masked option while downloading e-Aadhaar (the only way to get it) | ₹0 | A few minutes | Almost everywhere, in our experience | The passport office, in our experience. Also any office that needs your full number | Your safest everyday copy: only the last 4 digits show |
| PVC card | Order online from UIDAI; it comes by Speed Post to the address on your Aadhaar | ₹75 incl. GST and post | UIDAI: up to 30 days. In our experience: 15–30 days | UIDAI says it is as valid as e-Aadhaar and the letter | No hologram since 17 Oct 2025. Sometimes doubted; we've seen it refused at the passport office | Track with the SRN. Take an e-Aadhaar print to the passport office |
| Aadhaar App profile / QR | Install UIDAI's Aadhaar App: OTP, face scan and a 6-digit PIN | ₹0 | One-time setup | Businesses registered with UIDAI as OVSE can verify you through the app | In our experience not yet accepted as ID at airports, railways or hotels | Use it to view and download e-Aadhaar; carry a print or card too |
"Shop print" is our idea of a fair charge for printing an e-Aadhaar, not an official fee. A biometric-authenticated print at an Aadhaar centre costs ₹30–₹40 (UIDAI's own Seva Kendras list ₹40).
Customers rarely ask which form lasts longer. They ask where it will be accepted, what it costs and how soon they get it. For a wallet copy, they choose the PVC card and a laminated print about equally. A laminated print at a shop costs roughly ₹30–50.
Which Aadhaar format do you need?
Pick where you need to show Aadhaar. The answer comes from UIDAI's rules plus what we see at our counter every day.
| Where you need it | What to carry |
|---|---|
| Passport office | Full e-Aadhaar print with a validated signature (in our experience, not masked and not PVC) |
| Bank or KYC | e-Aadhaar print with a validated signature; DigiLocker or UMANG copies also work in our experience |
| Hotel check-in | Masked e-Aadhaar or PVC card; some hotels scan the QR code |
| Train, flight or bus travel | e-Aadhaar print or PVC card; the app profile isn't accepted yet in our experience |
| Form that needs your full number | Full e-Aadhaar print, the letter or the PVC card |
| Anywhere that only checks identity | Masked e-Aadhaar |
- Is it the passport office or a bank? No: in our experience a masked e-Aadhaar works almost everywhere else (hotel, travel)
- Is it the passport office? No (a bank): carry an e-Aadhaar print with a validated signature
- Download the full (unmasked) e-Aadhaar
- Does the signature show a green tick? No: validate it in Adobe Reader first
- Print it. In our experience a masked copy or a PVC card can be refused there
- Ready for the passport office
What is masked Aadhaar, and when is it enough?
A masked Aadhaar is an e-Aadhaar that shows only the last 4 digits of your Aadhaar number. The first 8 digits are hidden. UIDAI offers it only as an e-Aadhaar download; there is no masked PVC card or letter.
Where does a masked Aadhaar work?
| Situation | Masked e-Aadhaar | Full e-Aadhaar |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar number shown | Last 4 digits only (XXXX XXXX 1987) | All 12 digits |
| Passport office | Not accepted, in our experience | Accepted with a validated signature |
| Most other places | Accepted almost everywhere, in our experience | Accepted |
| If someone keeps a photocopy | Your full number stays private | Your full number is on their copy |
| Cost | ₹0 | ₹0 |

- Open the official download page on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
- Enter your Aadhaar number, Enrolment ID or VID and the captcha
- Did the OTP arrive on your registered mobile? No: see the no-mobile options
- Tick the masked Aadhaar option, then download

Type myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in yourself and choose the e-Aadhaar download. The full steps are in our e-Aadhaar download guide.
-

Use your Aadhaar number, Enrolment ID or Virtual ID. The OTP goes only to the mobile registered with your Aadhaar.
-
Tick the masked option before downloading
Choose masked Aadhaar, then download. If you forget, simply download again and tick it.
You'll know it worked when the PDF shows only the last 4 digits of your number.
-
Open it with the PDF password
The password is the first 4 letters of your name in CAPITALS plus your year of birth, for example SURE1990. Stuck? Try our PDF password helper.
Is the Aadhaar PVC card without a hologram valid?
Yes. UIDAI stopped putting a hologram on PVC cards from 17 October 2025 (UIDAI office memo). It says the PVC card has the same validity as the e-Aadhaar and the letter. So a card without a hologram is not fake.
- Fee: ₹75, including GST and Speed Post. It went up from ₹50 on 1 January 2026, as reported.
- Delivery: by Speed Post to the address on your Aadhaar. UIDAI's PVC order page says up to 30 days; in our experience it takes 15–30 days.
- Tracking: use the SRN from your order, or the Speed Post number on indiapost.gov.in.
- No registered mobile: you can order with another mobile number for the OTP, but you see no preview. We have sometimes seen such cards arrive with wrong details.
In our experience, a PVC card without a hologram is sometimes doubted, and we have seen it refused at the passport office. This is an early note from our counter, not a UIDAI rule. To order one, see our PVC card guide.
What should you do if an office doubts your PVC card?
- Explain calmly: UIDAI stopped holograms on 17 Oct 2025
- Ask them to scan the QR code with the Aadhaar App or a UIDAI QR reader
- Do they accept it now?No: show a full e-Aadhaar print with a validated signature
- Accepted
Going to the passport office? In our experience it's better to take a full e-Aadhaar print with a green tick from the start.
Can you show the Aadhaar App instead of a card?
UIDAI's new Aadhaar App (launched 28 January 2026) can hold up to 5 profiles on one phone. It offers QR check-in, offline verification and selective sharing. Businesses that register with UIDAI as OVSE (offline verification entities) at ovse.uidai.gov.in can verify you through the app. More than 100 had registered by April 2026, as reported.
In practice, it's not there yet. In our experience, the app's QR or profile is not yet accepted as ID at airports, railways or hotels. Some hotels scan the QR code on your card or print; others still take a photocopy.
- Use the app to view and download your e-Aadhaar. That's what most of our customers use it for.
- Keep a print or PVC card with you for travel and check-ins.
- The old mAadhaar app has been retired, as reported, and no longer shows in the Play Store. Its data doesn't move to the new app; register again. See our Aadhaar App guide.
UIDAI said in December 2025 (as reported) that businesses storing Aadhaar photocopies break the Aadhaar Act. Hotels are expected to register as OVSE and verify instead. In our experience many haven't switched yet.
How do you validate the signature on e-Aadhaar before printing?
Banks and the passport office ask for an e-Aadhaar print with a validated signature. A fresh download shows a yellow question mark ("Validity Unknown"). After you trust UIDAI's certificate in Adobe Reader, it turns into a green tick. Here is the short version; the full 6-step guide with pictures is on our download page.
- Open the e-Aadhaar PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader on a computer
- Right-click the question mark → Validate Signature → Signature Properties
- Show Signer's Certificate → Trust → Add to Trusted Certificates → OK
- Validate again: green tick? No: check you're in Adobe Reader, not a browser viewer; see the full steps
- Print with "Document and Markups" so the tick shows
-
Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader
Use the free Adobe Acrobat Reader on a computer, and enter the PDF password.
-
Trust UIDAI's certificate
Right-click the question mark, choose Validate Signature, then Signature Properties. Click Show Signer's Certificate, open Trust and click Add to Trusted Certificates.
-
Validate again and print
Click Validate Signature once more. Print from Adobe Reader with Document and Markups selected.
You'll know it worked when the paper shows a green tick and "Signature valid".
How can anyone check that an Aadhaar is genuine?
Scan the Secure QR code on the Aadhaar. UIDAI says only the Aadhaar App, the Aadhaar QR Scanner app or UIDAI's Windows QR reader can read it, and it works offline. News reports say fake e-Aadhaar PDFs, including AI-made ones, can be caught this way.
The QR holds: the last 4 digits of the Aadhaar number, name, address, gender, date of birth, photo, and a masked mobile number and email.
- Open the Aadhaar App, the Aadhaar QR Scanner app or UIDAI's Windows QR reader
- Scan the QR code on the card, letter or print
- Do the photo, name, date of birth and last 4 digits match the paper? No: don't accept it; it may be fake or edited. Report fraud
- Details match: the Aadhaar checks out
Businesses that verify customers often should read our guide to verifying an Aadhaar.
What goes wrong with Aadhaar formats, and how do you fix it?
| Your situation | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The passport office won't take your masked copy | In our experience it needs the full number | Download the full e-Aadhaar, validate the signature and print it |
| Your print shows a question mark, not a green tick | The signature wasn't validated before printing | Validate it in Adobe Reader and print again |
| An office doubts your PVC card | No hologram since 17 Oct 2025 | Ask them to scan the QR code; carry a full e-Aadhaar print as backup |
| PVC card hasn't arrived yet | In our experience 15–30 days is normal | Track with the SRN or the Speed Post number on indiapost.gov.in. After 30 days, call 1947 with the SRN |
| PVC card shows an old address or wrong details | It prints the details on record; orders without a preview sometimes go wrong | Correct your Aadhaar details first, then order again (UIDAI allows reorders) |
| You can't download e-Aadhaar or a masked copy | No OTP: the registered mobile is lost or not linked | Get a biometric print at an Aadhaar centre (₹30–₹40), or see download without a registered mobile |
| The PDF won't open | Wrong password format | First 4 letters of your name in CAPITALS + year of birth. Try the password helper |
| A hotel wants to keep a photocopy | In our experience many still do, though UIDAI wants them to verify instead | Give a masked copy so your full number stays private |
| Your app profile was refused as ID | Common for now, in our experience | Show a print or the PVC card |
| You lost the paper letter | Paper reprints have reportedly stopped | Download e-Aadhaar or order a PVC card. See Lost Aadhaar: 5-step plan |
When should you visit an Aadhaar centre?
- No registered mobile and you need a copy today: ask for a biometric-authenticated e-Aadhaar print. It costs ₹30–₹40 (UIDAI's own Seva Kendras list ₹40).
- No registered mobile for the future: update your mobile number at the centre (₹75). Then download e-Aadhaar or a masked copy at home.
- Wrong details on your card: correct them first, then download or reorder.
Aadhaar Seva Kendras usually open on Sundays too and close on about 10 holidays a year. The centre we visit works 9:30 am–1 pm and 2–5:30 pm. Check your centre before you go.
Which Aadhaar format works best from abroad
- e-Aadhaar and masked e-Aadhaar need an OTP on your registered mobile. Keep that number active.
- A PVC card is sent by Speed Post only to the address on your Aadhaar in India. Ask family there to receive it.
- Registered number not working? Update it at an Aadhaar centre on your next visit to India (₹75), or get a biometric print there (₹30–₹40).
- In our experience, an e-Aadhaar saved in DigiLocker is accepted at banks and offices in India.
Region not right?
Fake e-Aadhaar and card scams
- Fake and AI-made e-Aadhaar PDFs have been reported. Before you accept one, scan its QR code with the Aadhaar App.
- The official PVC card costs ₹75 and is ordered only from UIDAI: on uidai.gov.in sites or, in our counter team's experience, in UIDAI's Aadhaar App. Downloading e-Aadhaar is free.
- Don't hand out full copies when a masked copy will do. Your full number on a photocopy can be misused.
- Never tell an OTP to a caller, even if they say they're from UIDAI or a bank. More in Aadhaar fraud and scams.
