Aadhaar (Aadhar) Fingerprint Not Matching? Why It Happens and What to Do
If your Aadhaar fingerprint doesn't match, retry with other fingers after cleaning the finger and the scanner. Then ask for OTP, iris or face authentication, because agencies must offer an alternative so you don't lose a benefit. Error 330 means your biometrics are locked. If fingerprints keep failing, get a ₹125 biometric update at an Aadhaar centre.
- First try
- Other fingers, clean scanner
- Alternatives
- OTP · iris · face
- Locked biometrics
- Error 330
- Biometric update
- ₹125, centre only
- Child biometric update
- ₹0 at 5–7 and 15–17; 7–15 free till 30 Sep 2027
This guide is for people whose fingerprint, iris or face check fails at a bank, ration shop, gas agency, EPFO or in the Aadhaar App. For the update visit itself, see Photo & biometric update.

Why does Aadhaar fingerprint authentication fail?
From age 5, your Aadhaar holds a photo, all 10 fingerprints and both irises. A fingerprint check compares your finger with those records. When it fails, the problem is sometimes not your finger at all.
| What you see | What it points to | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Fails once or twice | Start with UIDAI's simple fixes: other fingers, a clean finger and scanner | Steps |
| Fails on every finger, again and again | A known problem for elderly people and manual labourers, reported for ration, MGNREGA and pensions | Elderly and workers |
| Error 330 on the screen | Your biometrics are locked; the finger may be fine | Error 330 |
| A child's fingerprint never works | Children under 5 give only a photo. Fingerprints are added at the update at 5–7 | Child update |
| Face check fails, enrolled as a child | Users report face matches failing for people enrolled as children | Face check |
| Twins' biometrics seem swapped | A twins' biometric mix-up; a centre can't fix it | Problems |
We don't give medical or skin-care advice. UIDAI's own advice is practical: retry, try other fingers, clean the finger and the scanner, and then get a biometric update.
Where did your biometric check fail?
The fix depends on where it happened. Pick the place to see what to do.
| If it failed at… | Then |
|---|---|
| Bank or AePS micro-ATM | Retry with other fingers, clean; ask for OTP, iris or face; steps |
| Ration shop | You should not be deleted; ask for another way; ration card guide |
| LPG booking or delivery | Needed from 1 Oct 2026; retry, clean, ask about another way; details |
| EPFO / UMANG | New UANs need a UMANG face check; use someone else's smartphone if needed; EPF/UAN guide |
| Aadhaar App | Good light; for a mobile update, a centre if it keeps failing; face check |
| Error 330 | Biometrics locked; unlock, finish, lock again |
What should you do when your Aadhaar fingerprint doesn't match?
Try these steps in order.
- Fingerprint failed? Retry, and try your other fingers
- Clean the finger and the scanner, then try again
- Did the agency offer another way: OTP, iris or face? No: ask for it; agencies must offer an alternative so a benefit is not denied
- Still failing again and again? Get a biometric update (₹125) at an authorised Aadhaar centre
- New biometrics recorded; try the check again once the update is complete
-
Retry and try other fingers
Your Aadhaar has all 10 fingerprints, so any finger can be tried. Ask the operator to try a different finger rather than the same one again.
-
Clean the finger and the scanner
Clean your finger and ask the operator to clean the scanner. Then try again.
-
Check for error 330
If the screen shows error 330, your biometrics are locked. No finger will work until you unlock them.
-
Ask for another way to authenticate
UIDAI says agencies must offer an alternative, such as OTP, iris or face, so a benefit is not denied. An OTP goes to your registered mobile, so carry that phone.
You'll know it worked when the agency completes your check by OTP, iris or face instead.
-
Get a biometric update if it keeps failing
Visit an authorised Aadhaar centre. A biometric update (fingerprints, iris and photo) costs ₹125. It can't be done online. See when to get one.
What other ways can you prove it's you?
UIDAI lists these ways to authenticate an Aadhaar holder. If one fails, ask the agency for another.
| Method | How it works | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| OTP | A 6-digit code sent by SMS | Your registered mobile, with you |
| Iris | Your eye is scanned and matched | An agency with an iris scanner. Reports say most ration shops don't have one |
| Face | A 1:1 match of your face with your Aadhaar photo, using the Face RD app | A device with the Face RD app |
| Fingerprint | Your finger is matched with your Aadhaar record | A fingerprint scanner |
| Demographic | Your details are matched with your Aadhaar record | Your details as they are on Aadhaar |
- Every authentication sends an email notice, UIDAI says. If an email is linked to your Aadhaar, watch for notices you don't recognise.
- Check your authentication history in the Aadhaar App. It shows the last 6 months: type, time, agency and any error.
- No mobile linked? Add one at an Aadhaar centre. It is included free when you pay ₹125 for a biometric update in the same visit. A family member's number can be linked too.
More on each method: OTP, face & biometric authentication.
What happens when the check fails at a bank, ration shop, gas agency or EPFO?
| Your situation | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Bank or AePS micro-ATM: fingerprint fails | The check can't be completed by fingerprint | Retry with other fingers, clean; ask for OTP, iris or face. Know which account gets your payments: bank seeding |
| Ration shop: e-KYC on the ePoS machine fails | No genuine household may be deleted for biometric failure. In our experience the member or card is put on hold | Ask for another way; e-KYC at the ration shop is free. States set their own deadlines |
| Ration shop has no iris scanner | Reported at most shops | Ask for OTP or face instead |
| LPG refill: biometric check fails | Needed for subsidised refills from 1 Oct 2026. In our experience all customers are asked | Retry at delivery, at the showroom or in the oil company's app; ask about another way |
| LPG under Ujjwala (PMUY) | The biometric check is once per financial year | Do it at delivery, at the showroom or in the app |
| EPFO: UMANG face check fails | New UANs are allotted or activated only through UMANG with face authentication | Retry; if your face keeps failing, get a biometric update. See EPF/UAN guide |
| EPFO: no smartphone | We have seen no offline fallback | Use someone else's smartphone for the face check |
| MGNREGA or pension: fingerprint fails | Failures are reported here too | Same steps; ask for OTP, iris or face |
- Ration card: there is no national deadline for e-KYC; the Mera Ration 2.0 app is another channel. Full details: Link Aadhaar with ration card.
- EPFO: UAN activation was removed from the member portal on 3 July 2026. Workers without smartphones report trouble, and the portal was reported down for a week.
When ration e-KYC isn't done, we see the member or card put on hold or made inactive, not deleted. Each state sets its own deadline. LPG biometric e-KYC is being asked of all customers, not only subsidised ones. For EPFO we've seen no offline route: people without a smartphone do the face check on someone else's smartphone.
What if face authentication keeps failing?
Face authentication compares your face with your Aadhaar photo, one to one. It is used by the Aadhaar App and by UMANG for EPFO. News reports say a Face Authentication SDK launched in September 2026 lets banks build it into their own apps.
- Use good light. The Aadhaar App asks for a face check in good light when you register.
- Old photo? Users report face matches failing for people enrolled as children. A biometric update records a new photo.
- Error codes: users report Face RD errors 9609 and 9724. We don't know their official meaning, so we don't explain them here.
- App mobile update failing at the face scan? Update your mobile at an Aadhaar centre instead.
In our experience, a failing face check is one of the common problems when people register in the new Aadhaar App, along with late OTPs. App mobile updates work in roughly half the cases we see; when they fail, it is most often the face scan. The fallback is an Aadhaar centre.
What does error 330 mean, and how do you fix it?
Error 330 means your biometrics are locked. A biometric lock blocks fingerprint, iris and face checks. The problem is the lock, not your finger. Unlock, finish the check, then lock again.
- Is the SIM registered with your Aadhaar in your phone? No: unlocking needs your registered mobile; update your mobile number at an Aadhaar centre first
- Unlock biometrics in the Aadhaar App or online, or send
GETOTP+ last 4 digits of Aadhaar to 1947 - SMS route: send
DISABLEBIOLOCK+ the same digits + the 6-digit OTP to 1947 - Give your fingerprint, iris or face for the check
- Check done? Lock your biometrics again
- Ways to unlock: the Aadhaar App, online, at an enrolment centre or at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. You need your registered mobile.
- Biometric SMS commands don't work while your whole Aadhaar number (UID) is locked.
- Lock portal stuck? Users report this. The SMS route is another option; it needs no app or internet.
- Bank refusing KYC after a lock? This is reported. Unlock before you visit, then lock again afterwards.
Send each to 1947 from your registered mobile. Unlock biometrics: GETOTP 1987, then DISABLEBIOLOCK 1987 012345. Lock biometrics: GETOTP 1987, then ENABLEBIOLOCK 1987 012345. Use your own last 4 digits of Aadhaar (or last 6 of VID) and your own OTP.
This works only on your phone. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Never type your full Aadhaar number into any website except uidai.gov.in.
Example numbers above: Aadhaar ending 1987, OTP 012345. Two family members on one mobile with the same last 4 digits? Use the last 8 digits of Aadhaar in SMS 2 (never in the GETOTP message). All 1947 SMS formats: SMS command generator (1947). Full lock and unlock guide: Lock Aadhaar & biometrics, VID.
What can elderly people and manual workers do?
Fingerprint failures for labourers and the elderly are a known problem. A 2025 parliamentary committee report noted failures in ration, MGNREGA and pensions. Each step below comes from UIDAI rules, official notices, user reports or our own field experience, as marked. More help for older and disabled people: Elderly, disabled & bedridden.
- Use the same first steps: retry, other fingers, clean the finger and the scanner.
- Ask for OTP, iris or face. Agencies must offer an alternative so a benefit is not denied.
- Link a mobile for OTPs. In our experience a family member's number, such as a son's or daughter's, can be linked; OTPs then go to that phone. See Update mobile number.
- Ration e-KYC: users report the bypass for elderly people is limited to 2 requests a day, and most shops have no iris scanner. The household should not be deleted for biometric failure.
- Get a biometric update if failures keep happening. It costs ₹125, and adding a mobile in the same visit is included.
- Can't travel to a centre? In our experience home service can be arranged for some elderly or disabled people. Prior permission from the UIDAI Regional Office may be needed, and the full fee is charged.
- No smartphone for an EPFO face check? In our experience you can use someone else's smartphone, such as a family member's.
When should you get a biometric update, and where?
Visit an Aadhaar centre when the quick fixes don't work. A biometric update covers fingerprints, iris and photo.
| Who | When to visit | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Adult whose fingerprints keep failing | After retries, other fingers and an alternative didn't solve it | ₹125 (other detail changes in the same visit included) |
| Child aged 5–7 (first mandatory update) | Now; fingerprints and iris are added | ₹0, as a stand-alone request |
| Child aged 7–15 | If fingerprints fail or the update at 5 was missed | ₹0 until 30 Sep 2027 (free period extended by UIDAI) |
| Teen aged 15–17 (second mandatory update) | Now | ₹0, as a stand-alone request |
| Twins with mixed-up biometrics | A centre can't fix it | UIDAI Regional Office only |
- Find an authorised Aadhaar centre; book a free slot if it is listed
- Can this centre do updates? No: a normal CSC or cyber café can't; find an authorised centre
- The operator captures your new biometrics on the centre's devices
- Pay ₹125 (₹0 for a child's update in the free age windows) and keep the acknowledgement slip
- Track it with the number on your slip; try your check again once the update is complete
- Which centre? In our experience, a CSC with an authorised Aadhaar centre, or a centre with an Aadhaar operator ID. A normal CSC or cyber café can only print, download e-Aadhaar and order PVC cards.
- Timings: Aadhaar Seva Kendras usually open on Sundays too. Most work 9:30 am to 5:30 pm; the centre we visited closes for lunch from 1 to 2 pm. Check your centre before you go.
- Children: if a child's mandatory update isn't done after age 7, the Aadhaar may be deactivated. See Child biometric update (5 & 15), or work out the dates with the child update due-date calculator.
Full steps, fees and tracking: Photo & biometric update. Booking help: Book an Aadhaar appointment; after the visit: update status.
What other problems come up, and how do you fix them?
| Your situation | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Agency won't offer OTP, iris or face | UIDAI says agencies must offer an alternative | Ask politely and mention the rule; call 1947 for help |
| OTP chosen, but no mobile linked | OTP needs a registered mobile | Link a mobile at an Aadhaar centre; a family member's number can be used |
| Error 330 | Biometrics locked | Unlock, finish the check, lock again |
| Biometric SMS gets no reply | Possible causes: not sent from the registered mobile, or the whole UID is locked | Send from the registered mobile; unlock the UID first; contact your mobile operator |
| Email notice for a check you didn't do | Someone may have used your Aadhaar | Check authentication history in the Aadhaar App; lock biometrics; see fraud guide |
| Cash taken by AePS without your knowledge | Possible fingerprint-clone fraud | Call 1930 or use cybercrime.gov.in fast; lock biometrics |
| Twins' biometrics mixed up | A centre can't fix this | Only the UIDAI Regional Office can; call 1947 for the next step |
| Cyber café says it can't update fingerprints | In our experience, normal CSCs without an Aadhaar operator ID can't do updates | Go to an authorised Aadhaar centre |
| Offered "fingerprint update from home" online | Fake: there is no online fingerprint update | Ignore it; never share your OTP |
| Asked more than ₹125 for a biometric update | Overcharging | Pay ₹125 only; complain on 1947 or [email protected] |
Fingerprint problems for NRIs
- New fingerprints need a visit to India. Biometric updates are centre only, and reports say there is no embassy route. NRIs pay the same ₹125.
- OTP checks and biometric unlocking need your registered mobile. Keep it working while you are abroad.
- If your Aadhaar App is set up, its authentication history shows the last 6 months of checks.
- Plan any update early in your trip, and book a slot if your centre is listed on bookappointment.uidai.gov.in.
Region not right?
Fingerprint cloning and AePS fraud
- How it happens: fraudsters take your Aadhaar number from photocopies. They lift a fingerprint from property papers or make a silicone clone, then withdraw cash at a micro-ATM. No OTP is involved.
- Lock your biometrics when you don't need them. See how to lock biometrics.
- Share only masked copies of your Aadhaar.
- Lost money? Call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in within the "golden hour".
- There is no online fingerprint update. Never share your OTP with a caller. We never ask for your fingerprints. More: Aadhaar fraud & scams.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Aadhaar fingerprint not matching?
UIDAI's advice starts with simple fixes: retry, use other fingers, and clean the finger and the scanner. Failures are often reported among elderly people and manual workers. If you see error 330, your biometrics are locked. If it keeps failing, a biometric update records new fingerprints.
Can a bank or ration shop refuse me if my fingerprint fails?
UIDAI says agencies must offer an alternative, such as OTP, iris or face, so a benefit is not denied. Ask for it politely. For ration cards, the food department has said no genuine household may be deleted because of biometric failure.
What does error 330 mean?
Your biometrics are locked. Unlock them in the Aadhaar App, online, at a centre or by SMS to 1947, finish the check, then lock them again.
How much does a fingerprint update cost?
₹125 at an authorised Aadhaar centre, with other detail changes in the same visit included. A child's mandatory update at 5–7 or 15–17 is free, and a child's biometric update at 7–15 is free until 30 Sep 2027.
Can I update my fingerprints online?
No. Fingerprint, iris and photo updates need an Aadhaar centre. Any website or message offering an online fingerprint update is fake.
Will my ration card be cancelled if e-KYC fails?
No genuine household may be deleted for biometric failure, the food department has said. In our experience the member or card is put on hold or made inactive until e-KYC is done. Each state sets its own deadline.
My face scan fails in the Aadhaar App or UMANG. What can I do?
Try again in good light. If your Aadhaar photo is from childhood, users report more failures; a biometric update records a new photo. For EPFO, you can do the face check on someone else's smartphone.
How do I know if someone used my fingerprint?
UIDAI says every authentication sends an email notice. You can also check your authentication history for the last 6 months in the Aadhaar App. Lock your biometrics if you see checks you didn't do.
Is the LPG fingerprint check only for subsidised customers?
The rule from 1 October 2026 covers subsidised refills. In our experience the biometric e-KYC is being asked of all customers. It can be done at delivery, at the showroom or in the oil company's app.
Can an Aadhaar centre fix twins' mixed-up fingerprints?
No. UIDAI sends twins with mixed-up biometrics to its Regional Office, and in our experience a centre can't fix it. Call 1947 to ask how to reach your Regional Office.
Bottom line
A failed fingerprint doesn't have to cost you a benefit. Retry with other fingers, clean the finger and the scanner, and ask for OTP, iris or face. Error 330 just means your biometrics are locked. If failures keep coming, a ₹125 biometric update at an authorised centre records new fingerprints. Stuck? Call UIDAI's helpline 1947.
