What is an EID, and where do you find it?

When you enrol, the centre gives you an acknowledgement slip. It shows your EID (enrolment ID). You need this number to check the status and to download e-Aadhaar before the letter arrives.

Anatomy of a 28-digit EID Illustration with dummy numbers. Part 1 is a 14-digit enrolment number, 1234 5678 9012 34. Part 2 is a 14-digit date-and-time stamp, 5678 9012 3456 78. Together they make the 28-digit EID. Your Aadhaar number is a different, 12-digit number. EID = 28 digits Part 1 · Enrolment no. URN / SRNURN: 8 digits (updates requested in mAadhaar). SRN: "S" + 13 digits (online update requests)For updates to an existing Aadhaar, not new enrolment. A centre update slip carries its own number. See update status

On the status page, first choose the type: 14-digit Enrolment No. or 28-digit EID, then type the digits exactly as printed on your slip.

How do you check your Aadhaar enrolment status?

Checking your enrolment status, step by step
  1. Do you have the enrolment number or 28-digit EID from your slip? No: retrieve it first
  2. Open Check Enrolment / Update Status on myAadhaar, enter the number and the captcha
  3. Does it show your Aadhaar is generated? No: still in progress or rejected: see what to do
  4. Download e-Aadhaar with your EID and an OTP on your registered mobile
  5. Use e-Aadhaar now; the letter comes by India Post
  1. Find the EID on your slip

It is printed on the acknowledgement slip from the centre. Lost the slip? Go to Retrieve EID/UID.

  2. Open Check Enrolment / Update Status

Use UIDAI's official link below (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/CheckAadhaarStatus). The page is headed "Check Enrolment or Update Status" and has four options: Enrolment Number (EID), SRN, URN and SID. Open Enrolment Number (EID). Don't confuse it with "Check Aadhaar Status", which only checks whether an existing Aadhaar number is valid. Type the address yourself or use our button. Don't open status links sent on WhatsApp or SMS by strangers.

  3. Enter the number and read the result

Under "Select type", pick 14-digit Enrolment No. or 28-digit EID and type the digits carefully. Type the 6-character captcha (you can refresh it or listen to it) and press Check Status. In general the page tells you whether your Aadhaar has been generated, is still being processed, or was rejected. The exact wording on the portal may differ from ours.

You'll know it worked when the page shows the current status of your enrolment.

If nothing is found, check each digit again. UIDAI's charter allows up to 2 days to upload your data, so a very fresh enrolment may not show yet.

  4. Act on the result

Generated: download e-Aadhaar. Still processing: compare with the timeline. Rejected: see what to do.

How long does it take for a new Aadhaar to be generated?

UIDAI's Citizen's Charter (January 2024) sets these service standards. Use them to decide whether to keep waiting or to complain.

Within 10 days of generationLetter to India PostThe printed letter goes to the address on record.

Your status still says it's being processed. Should you wait or act?

Still in progress: wait or escalate?
  1. Is the enrolment still being processed (not rejected)? No, rejected: see how to re-enrol
  2. Is it still within UIDAI's time (30 days for a child, 180 days for an adult)? No: escalate with your EID
  3. Wait and check again later. Do not enrol a second time
  4. Once generated, download e-Aadhaar with your EID
  • Within the charter time: waiting is normal. Calling or re-enrolling won't make it faster.
  • Past the charter time: start the escalation ladder. Keep your EID and the enrolment date ready.
  • Adults in some states go through extra state verification first. See UP, Chandigarh and Assam.
  • Adults enrolled at a non-designated centre: since 1 December 2022, adult new enrolments are taken only at designated centres. Adult packets from other centres are rejected.
Important

Enrol only once. UIDAI rejects a second enrolment unless it advises you otherwise. Enrolling again while your first one is pending won't speed anything up, and it can cause new problems.

Why do adult enrolments take longer in UP, Chandigarh and Assam?

News reports say these places add their own verification before an adult's Aadhaar is generated. The details below are as reported; check with your centre for the current rules.

WhereWhat is reported
Uttar Pradesh (since Dec 2023)Adult enrolments are verified by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), much like a passport check. The Aadhaar is generated within 180 days of clearance.
Chandigarh (since 2023)The UT administration verifies adult enrolments. About 100 adults enrol each month.
AssamNo new adult Aadhaar after 1 Oct 2025, except through the District Commissioner in "rarest of rare" cases. From 13 Jun 2026, state approval is required. SC/ST, tea-garden and Divyang applicants are exempt until 31 Mar 2027. Under-18s are not affected.

We have not confirmed whether any other state adds a similar check. If you live elsewhere, go by UIDAI's charter times above.

Your Aadhaar is generated but not received. What should you do?

You don't have to wait for the post. e-Aadhaar is as legally valid as the printed letter. Download it as soon as your status says the Aadhaar is generated.

  • Download with your EID: on myAadhaar or in the Aadhaar App, enter the EID. An OTP goes to the mobile you gave at enrolment. Full steps: download e-Aadhaar.
  • PDF password: the first 4 letters of your name in CAPITALS plus your year of birth, for example SURE1990. Work yours out with the PDF password helper.
  • The letter: UIDAI hands it to India Post within 10 days of generation. It goes to the address on record.
  • Want a plastic card? Once you have your Aadhaar number, you can order a PVC card for ₹75, including GST and Speed Post.

No mobile number given at enrolment, or no access to it? You can't download e-Aadhaar. At an Aadhaar centre you can get a biometric-authenticated e-Aadhaar print for ₹30–₹40 (UIDAI's Seva Kendras list ₹40), or add your mobile number for ₹75. See download without a registered mobile. In our experience, OTPs start coming on the new number within 1–2 days.

Myth

"You can download Aadhaar with just your name and date of birth." You can't. You need your Aadhaar number, EID or VID plus an OTP, or a visit to an Aadhaar centre.

Lost your enrolment slip? How do you retrieve your EID or Aadhaar number?

UIDAI's Retrieve EID/UID service is reported to be free. It works if you gave a mobile number or email at enrolment and can still get messages on it.

Retrieving a lost EID or Aadhaar number
  1. Did you give a mobile number or email at enrolment, and can you get messages on it?No: visit an Aadhaar centre
  2. Open Retrieve EID/UID on myAadhaar
  3. Enter your name, that mobile number or email, and the captcha
  4. Enter the OTP sent to that mobile or email
  5. Your EID or Aadhaar number is retrieved; now check the status
  1. Open Retrieve EID/UID

Use the official link below. It is meant for getting back a lost EID or Aadhaar number.

  2. Enter your name and contact detail

Type your name as you gave it at enrolment. Add the mobile number or the email you gave. In our experience the email route works too: the OTP then comes by email.

  3. Enter the captcha and the OTP

You'll know it worked when your EID or Aadhaar number is retrieved. Write it down safely.

If no OTP arrives, check you typed the same mobile or email you gave at enrolment. With neither one working, only an Aadhaar centre can help.

What if your Aadhaar enrolment was rejected?

A rejected enrolment means no Aadhaar was made from it. UIDAI's advice is to enrol again. These are the reasons UIDAI gives for rejection:

Rejection reasonWhat it usually meansWhat to do
Document mismatchDetails on your documents don't match each other or what was typedUse documents where your name, date of birth and relatives' names match
Inconsistent dataDetails given don't agree with each otherCheck every detail with the operator before you give biometrics
Operator errorA mistake made at the centreEnrol again; ask the operator to show you the screen
Invalid documentNot on UIDAI's list, expired or not in your namePick a document from the list: see documents required
Quality issuesUnclear photo, fingerprints or scansEnrol again; clean your fingers and keep still for the photo
Adult enrolled at a non-designated centreSince 1 Dec 2022, only designated centres may take adult enrolmentsEnrol again at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or another designated centre
After a rejected enrolment
  1. Note the reason shown and keep the old slip
  2. Are you sure no Aadhaar was generated from any of your enrolments? No: check with Retrieve EID/UID first
  3. Fix the cause: valid original documents with matching details
  4. Enrol again (adults at a designated centre) and keep the new slip
  5. Track the new EID
Important

Don't re-apply if any earlier enrolment may already have produced an Aadhaar. Use Retrieve EID/UID first. If you are unsure, ask at an Aadhaar centre before you enrol again.

For the full enrolment process and documents, see apply for a new Aadhaar.

How do you escalate when your Aadhaar is overdue?

Escalate once you are past UIDAI's time: 30 days for a child, 180 days for an adult. The charter sets 30 days to resolve a grievance, so give each step that long. Always quote your EID and enrolment date.

The escalation ladder for an overdue Aadhaar
  1. Call 1947 with your EID; note any ticket number
  2. File a complaint on myAadhaar (file-complaint)
  3. Email [email protected] with the EID, dates and a photo of the slip
  4. Solved within 30 days? No: write to your Regional Office
  5. Still stuck? File on CPGRAMS (pgportal.gov.in)
  6. Last step: an RTI to UIDAI on rtionline.gov.in
  7. RTI reply due within 30 days

When should you visit an Aadhaar centre?

  • Lost slip, no mobile or email on record: a centre can help you find your EID or Aadhaar number.
  • Aadhaar generated, but no OTP on your mobile: get a ₹30–₹40 biometric-authenticated print, or add your mobile number for ₹75.
  • Enrolment rejected: enrol again. Adults must use a designated centre, such as an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Take original documents.
  • Timings: Aadhaar Seva Kendras usually open on Sundays too and close on about 10 holidays a year. Most work 9:30 am–5:30 pm with a lunch break from 1 to 2 pm. Check your centre before you go.
  • Booking: free at bookappointment.uidai.gov.in, and you don't need a mobile linked to Aadhaar to book. In our experience, centres not listed there are walk-in only. Steps: book an Aadhaar appointment.

Living outside India?

Tracking a new Aadhaar from abroad

  • Check Enrolment / Update Status works online from anywhere with your EID.
  • NRIs must give an email at enrolment. If you lose the slip, Retrieve EID/UID with your name and that email; in our experience the OTP comes by email.
  • Downloading e-Aadhaar needs an OTP on the mobile you gave at enrolment. A non-Indian mobile number gets no SMS, so without a working Indian SIM this is often where people get stuck.
  • NRIs don't need the 182-day stay rule and can enrol on arrival with a valid Indian passport. A rejected enrolment means a new visit to a centre in India.

Region not right?

Warning

"Fast Aadhaar" and status-check scams

  • New enrolment is free. Nobody can generate your Aadhaar faster, or skip state verification, for money.
  • Check status only on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in (or myaadhaarbeta.uidai.gov.in). Ignore SMS or WhatsApp links offering a status check or an "Aadhaar from home".
  • Hang up on callers who ask for an OTP or your EID. Never install screen-sharing apps (AnyDesk-type) for a "helper".
  • Don't buy fake documents or rent agreements. News reports describe a DTP centre caught making Aadhaar with fake rent agreements, and it is a crime.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my Aadhaar enrolment status?

Open Check Enrolment / Update Status on myAadhaar, choose Enrolment Number (EID), and enter the 14-digit enrolment number or the full 28-digit EID from your slip, plus the captcha. The page tells you, in its own wording, whether your Aadhaar is generated, still being processed or rejected.

What is the EID, and where is it?

The EID (enrolment ID) is printed on the slip the centre gives you. It has 28 digits: a 14-digit enrolment number and a 14-digit date-and-time stamp. The status page accepts either the 14-digit number or all 28 digits. It is not your Aadhaar number.

How long does it take to get a new Aadhaar?

UIDAI's Citizen's Charter sets 30 days for under-18s and 180 days for adults, for 90% of cases. The letter is handed to India Post within 10 days after the Aadhaar is generated.

My Aadhaar is generated but the card hasn't come. What should I do?

Download e-Aadhaar with your EID and an OTP on your registered mobile. It is as valid as the posted letter. You can also order a PVC card for ₹75.

I lost my enrolment slip. How do I find my EID?

Use Retrieve EID/UID on myAadhaar with your name and the mobile number or email you gave at enrolment. It is reported to be free. If you gave neither, visit an Aadhaar centre.

Can 1947 tell me my EID or Aadhaar number on the phone?

In our experience, no. Callers are sent to an Aadhaar centre. Use Retrieve EID/UID online if your mobile or email is on record.

Can I download Aadhaar with just my name and date of birth?

No, that's a myth. You need your Aadhaar number, EID or VID plus an OTP, or a visit to an Aadhaar centre.

My enrolment was rejected. Should I enrol again?

Yes. UIDAI says to re-enrol after fixing the cause. But don't re-apply if any earlier enrolment may already have produced an Aadhaar; check with Retrieve EID/UID first.

It's been months. Should I enrol again just in case?

No. You may enrol only once, and a second enrolment is rejected. If you are past 30 days (child) or 180 days (adult), escalate with your EID instead.

Will I get an SMS when my Aadhaar is ready?

UIDAI's charter says a status SMS should come within 30 days, to the mobile you gave. Don't rely on it alone; check online with your EID.

Why is adult enrolment so slow in UP, Chandigarh or Assam?

News reports say these places verify adult enrolments themselves first: the SDM in Uttar Pradesh, the UT administration in Chandigarh, and state approval in Assam. We haven't confirmed similar checks in other states.

What is an SID?

An SID is "S" followed by 27 digits. It is used instead of an EID for NRC Assam cases.

Bottom line

Keep your 28-digit EID safe and check it on myAadhaar. Give UIDAI 30 days for a child and 180 days for an adult. Once generated, download e-Aadhaar instead of waiting for the post. Don't enrol twice; escalate if it's overdue. UIDAI's free helpline is 1947.
