How Do Elderly, Disabled and Bedridden People Get or Update Aadhaar (Aadhar)?

Senior citizens and disabled people enrol or update Aadhaar at an Aadhaar centre like everyone else. New enrolment is free; a biometric update costs ₹125. If someone can't travel, in our experience home service can sometimes be arranged, but the full fee is charged. If fingerprints fail, agencies must offer another way, such as OTP, iris or face.

How do you take a senior or disabled person to an Aadhaar centre?

Enrolment and biometric updates happen in person only. The person must be there to give their photo, fingerprints and irises. UIDAI's Citizen's Charter sets a session of up to 20 minutes at the counter, but queues can add much more.

A centre visit with a senior or disabled person
  1. Book a free slot at bookappointment.uidai.gov.in, if the centre is listed
  2. Pack the original documents and the person's Aadhaar (for an update)
  3. Arrive well before 1 pm or after 2 pm, not during the lunch break
  4. Can the operator capture fingerprints, irises and photo? No: tell the operator about the problem; see biometric exceptions
  5. Are the details on the screen correct? No: ask for a correction before the final fingerprint or iris
  6. Pay the fee and keep the acknowledgement slip
  1. Choose the right centre

For a new adult Aadhaar, go to a designated centre such as an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Since December 2022, adult enrolments from other centres are rejected. Updates can be done at any authorised Aadhaar centre. In our experience, a normal CSC can only print, download e-Aadhaar and order PVC cards.

  2. Book a slot to cut the wait

Booking is free and you don't need the Aadhaar-registered mobile; the OTP goes to the number you enter. You can book at most 2 appointments a month and reschedule up to 24 hours before. In our experience, centres not listed online take walk-ins only. More: Book an Aadhaar appointment.

  3. Go at the right time

Aadhaar Seva Kendras are open 7 days, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, and close on holidays. The centre our team visited closes on about 10 holidays a year and stops for lunch from 1 to 2 pm. Check your own centre before you go.

  4. Check the details before the final capture

Read the name, date of birth and address on the operator's screen aloud to the person. Fix mistakes before they finish, because name, date of birth and gender have lifetime limits.

You'll know it worked when you get the acknowledgement slip. Keep it safe to track the request.

What to carry

  • Original documents, not photocopies. The operator scans and returns them. In our experience, DigiLocker copies on a phone are not accepted at the centre.
  • Printouts of e-documents (e-voter ID, e-ration card): in our experience, accepted only if they show a valid digital signature.
  • For an update: the person's Aadhaar number or card.
  • A mobile phone that will receive OTPs. In our experience, a son's or daughter's number can be linked.
  • The exact fee, and the booking details if you booked.

What if the person can't travel to a centre?

In our experience, home service can be arranged for eligible senior citizens, disabled people and some special cases. Prior permission from the UIDAI Regional Office may be needed. It is not free: the full fee is charged, even for bedridden or disabled people. We haven't found an official booking page or a confirmed home-visit charge, so ask about the cost before you agree.

Asking for home service
  1. Ask your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra, or call 1947, about home service
  2. Is the person eligible (senior, disabled or a special case)? No: plan a centre visit with help; see visit tips
  3. Regional Office permission may be needed first
  4. Confirm the charge in advance; the full fee applies
  5. The operator does the enrolment or update at home
  6. Pay and keep the acknowledgement slip
  • Keep the documents ready before the visit: the same originals a centre would ask for.
  • Only a mobile update needed? India Post Payments Bank lists mobile update for ₹75, but only at selected post offices. See Aadhaar services at home (IPPB) before you rely on it.
From our counter

Home service can be arranged for eligible senior citizens, disabled persons and some special cases, but prior permission from the UIDAI Regional Office may be needed. It is not free for bedridden or disabled people: the full fee is charged.

What if fingerprints or irises can't be captured?

From age 5, Aadhaar records a photo, all 10 fingerprints and both irises. Some people can't give all of these: missing fingers or hands, eye conditions, or fingerprints worn by age or manual work.

  • UIDAI's rules recognise "biometric exception" cases. Our sources don't describe the exact capture steps, so we don't list them. Tell the operator about the problem before the capture starts.
  • Exceptions are for genuine cases only. Misuse of the biometric exception, or an enrolment at 5+ done without biometrics, are reasons UIDAI can deactivate an Aadhaar. See Aadhaar deactivated?
  • Worn fingerprints? If later checks keep failing, a biometric update (₹125) records fresh fingerprints, iris and photo. See Photo & biometric update.
  • Later checks: UIDAI lists OTP, iris, face, fingerprint and demographic authentication. A person who can't give fingerprints can ask for OTP, iris or face.

Which documents help seniors, disabled people and transgender persons?

These rows come from UIDAI's official list for adults (List III). The full list: Documents required for Aadhaar; check a document with the document checker.

DocumentCounts asNote
Pensioner or freedom fighter ID card, Pension Payment OrderIdentity + address + date of birthUseful for retired people

Name and date of birth should match across all documents. If they don't, sort that out first. Assam: reports say new adult Aadhaar needs state approval from 13 June 2026, but Divyang (disabled) applicants are exempt until 31 March 2027.

What if an elderly person's fingerprint fails at the ration shop, bank or pension office?

Fingerprint failures among the elderly and manual labourers are a known problem. A 2025 parliamentary committee report noted failures in ration, MGNREGA and pensions. UIDAI says agencies must offer an alternative so a benefit is not denied.

Fingerprint failed for a benefit: what to do
  1. Retry with other fingers
  2. Clean the finger and ask the operator to clean the scanner
  3. Error 330 on the screen? No: carry on to the next step
  4. Did the agency offer OTP, iris or face? No: ask for it; agencies must offer an alternative
  5. OTP goes to the registered mobile, which can be a family member's
  6. Still failing again and again? Get a ₹125 biometric update

Error 330 means the biometrics are locked, not that the finger is bad. Unlock first: see biometric lock.

WhereWhat the rules or reports sayWhat to do
Ration shop e-KYCNo genuine household may be deleted for biometric failure. e-KYC at the shop's ePoS machine is free. Users report the bypass for elderly people is limited to 2 requests a day, and most shops have no iris scannerAsk for OTP or face
Ration e-KYC not doneIn our experience the member or card is put on hold or made inactive, not deleted. States set their own deadlinesFinish e-KYC when you can; there is no national deadline. See link Aadhaar with ration card
Bank or AePSAgencies must offer an alternative. News reports say a Face Authentication SDK (Sep 2026) lets banks add face checks to their appsAsk for OTP, iris or face
Pension stopped: person marked dead by mistakeA known problem in several states. UIDAI has a Regional Office route for people wrongly marked deadSee Aadhaar deactivated?
LPG refillBiometric Aadhaar authentication is needed for subsidised refills from 1 Oct 2026, at delivery, the showroom or the oil company app. In our experience the gas agency asks every customer for it, not only subsidised onesRetry; ask about another way

Face authentication

Face authentication matches the person's face one-to-one with their Aadhaar photo, using the Face RD app. It needs no fingers, so it can help people with worn or missing fingerprints. Use good light. In our experience the face scan sometimes fails too, for example in the Aadhaar App. An old photo can be replaced with a biometric update.

From our counter

A family member's mobile number, such as a son's or daughter's, can be linked to Aadhaar without any problem; no document is needed and the fee is ₹75. When ration e-KYC isn't done, we see the member or card put on hold, not deleted.

Full troubleshooting: Fingerprints not matching.

How can you protect an elderly or vulnerable person's Aadhaar?

Fraudsters take Aadhaar numbers from photocopies and clone fingerprints, often lifted from property papers. They then withdraw cash at a micro-ATM through AePS, with no OTP involved. A biometric lock blocks fingerprint, iris and face checks until it is unlocked.

Lock biometrics, unlock only when needed
  1. Is the registered mobile with you or the family? No: link a family member's number at a centre first (₹75)
  2. Lock biometrics in the Aadhaar App, online, or by SMS to 1947 (SMS generator)
  3. Before a ration, bank or LPG fingerprint check, unlock
  4. Give the fingerprint, iris or face check
  5. Lock the biometrics again afterwards
  • Think before locking if the person needs fingerprint checks often: every check needs an unlock first. Reports say some banks refused KYC after a lock.
  • Share only masked copies of Aadhaar. Masked Aadhaar shows only the last 4 digits.
  • Check authentication history in the Aadhaar App: the last 6 months of checks.
  • Money taken? Call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in fast.

How do transgender persons get or update Aadhaar?

A transgender ID card or certificate issued under the 2019 Act is on UIDAI's list. It counts as proof of identity, address and date of birth, for adults and for children aged 5–18.

Changing gender in Aadhaar
  1. Take your Aadhaar and the original transgender certificate to an Aadhaar centre
  2. The operator enters the new gender and scans the certificate
  3. Confirm with your fingerprint or iris
  4. Pay ₹75 (free if done with a ₹125 biometric update) and keep the slip
  5. Is this your first gender change? No: use the Regional Office exception route with the certificate
  6. New gender shows after processing
  • Gender can be changed only once in a lifetime. Gender changes aren't offered in the Aadhaar App; use a centre.
  • Exception route: after the limit, apply at a centre, then send the slip and proofs to the Regional Office by email or post, or call 1947. A government transgender certificate or a surgeon's medical certificate is needed. There is no fixed timeline.
  • If an operator changed your gender by mistake, the count resets to zero.
  • A complete name change needs a Gazette notification. See change your name.

How much does it cost?

There is no separate senior-citizen or disability rate in UIDAI's fee list. Charges are the same at every centre. Add up a visit with the fee calculator.

Helping elderly parents from abroad

  • Biometrics need a visit in person in India. Reports say there is no embassy or online route. Someone in India must take your parent to a centre, or ask about home service.
  • Book the slot for them online. Booking doesn't need the Aadhaar-registered mobile.
  • OTPs go only to the registered mobile. Linking the Indian number of a family member in India keeps OTPs reachable. UIDAI's 2026 forms say a non-Indian mobile number gets no SMS.
  • Your own Aadhaar: NRIs enrol on arrival in India with a valid Indian passport; email is mandatory.

Warning

Scams that target elderly people

  • "Aadhaar update from home" links on WhatsApp or SMS are fake. There is no online fingerprint or photo update.
  • Calls saying "your Aadhaar will be blocked" and asking for an OTP are fraud. Never share an OTP, and never install a screen-sharing app for a caller.
  • Home service is not free. Confirm the amount first and complain on 1947 if you're overcharged. Reports say an overcharging operator can be suspended.
  • AePS fraud needs no OTP. Keep biometrics locked and share only masked copies. More: Aadhaar fraud & scams.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bedridden person get Aadhaar made or updated at home?

In our experience home service can be arranged for eligible senior citizens, disabled people and some special cases. Prior permission from the UIDAI Regional Office may be needed. Ask your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or call 1947.

Is home service free for senior citizens or disabled people?

No. In our experience the full fee is charged, even for bedridden or disabled people. Confirm the amount before the visit.

My father's fingerprints are worn out. Can he still get Aadhaar or use it?

Yes. He can still enrol or update at a centre; tell the operator about the problem first. For later checks, agencies must offer an alternative such as OTP, iris or face. A ₹125 biometric update records fresh fingerprints.

What if a person has no fingers or can't give an iris scan?

UIDAI's rules recognise biometric exception cases, but our sources don't give the exact steps. Tell the operator before the capture. For checks later, ask for OTP, iris or face, whichever the person can give.

Can the ration shop stop rations if an elderly person's fingerprint fails?

The food department has said no genuine household may be deleted because of biometric failure. In our experience the member or card is put on hold until e-KYC is done. Ask for OTP or face instead.

Can I link my mobile number to my mother's Aadhaar?

Yes. A family member's number, such as a son's or daughter's, can be linked at an Aadhaar centre. In our experience no document is needed, and the fee is ₹75.

Is a disability certificate (UDID) accepted for Aadhaar?

It is not on UIDAI's official list on its own. A shelter-home certificate under the RPwD Act is listed, for identity and address. In our experience a UDID has sometimes been accepted, but carry a listed proof.

Which document can a transgender person use?

A transgender ID card or certificate under the 2019 Act. It counts as proof of identity, address and date of birth, and supports the gender-change exception route.

Is there a lower fee for senior citizens?

No separate rate is listed. New enrolment is free, a biometric update is ₹125 and a demographic update is ₹75, the same at every centre.

Bottom line

Age, disability or worn fingerprints don't shut anyone out of Aadhaar. Go to a centre with original documents, book a free slot and avoid the lunch break. If travel is impossible, ask about home service at the full fee. When fingerprints fail, ask for OTP, iris or face. For help, call UIDAI's free helpline 1947.
