How Does Aadhaar (Aadhar) Authentication Work? OTP, Fingerprint, Iris, Face and Offline e-KYC Explained
Aadhaar authentication checks that you are the Aadhaar holder. UIDAI lists five ways: a 6-digit OTP on your registered mobile, fingerprint, iris, face (matched one to one with your Aadhaar photo) and demographic details. If your biometrics fail, agencies must offer another way. Your authentication history shows the last 6 months, and UIDAI says each authentication sends an email notice.

What are the ways to authenticate with Aadhaar?
Authentication means an agency checks something you give (an OTP, a fingerprint, your eye, your face or your details) against your Aadhaar record. UIDAI lists five ways. From age 5, your Aadhaar holds a photo, all 10 fingerprints and both irises; children under 5 give only a photo. Scroll sideways on a phone.
| Way | What you need | Where you meet it | Common failure | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OTP | The SIM registered with your Aadhaar, in your phone. The OTP has 6 digits | myAadhaar login, e-Aadhaar download, Aadhaar App registration, PAN–Aadhaar link, IRCTC Tatkal booking | OTP late or not arriving; mobile not registered or lost | Check your mobile; update it at an Aadhaar centre (₹75) |
| Fingerprint | A fingerprint scanner at the agency | Banks and AePS micro-ATMs, ration shop ePoS machines, LPG refills, Aadhaar centres | A dirty finger or scanner, repeated failures (often reported for elderly people and manual workers), or error 330 (biometrics locked) | Other fingers, clean finger and scanner; ask for another way; steps |
| Iris | An iris scanner at the agency | Aadhaar centres and agencies that have iris scanners | No iris scanner: reports say most ration shops don't have one | Ask for OTP or face instead |
| Face | A camera and the Face RD app. Your face is matched one to one with your Aadhaar photo | Aadhaar App registration and mobile update; new EPFO UANs through UMANG | Poor light; an old photo, especially for people enrolled as children | Face tips; a biometric update records a new photo (₹125) |
| Demographic | Your details exactly as they are on your Aadhaar | Agencies that match the details you give with your Aadhaar record | A detail typed differently from Aadhaar | Give the details exactly as on Aadhaar; correct Aadhaar if it is wrong |
Children under 5 have no fingerprints or iris on record. Their fingerprints and iris are added at the mandatory update at age 5–7.
Your authentication failed: which kind?
Pick what happened to see the most likely fix.
| What failed | What to do |
|---|---|
| Fingerprint didn't match | Other fingers, clean finger and scanner; ask for OTP, iris or face; steps |
| Error 330 | Biometrics locked: unlock, finish, lock again; locks |
| OTP didn't come | Don't re-request too often; check the linked mobile; OTP checks |
| Face check failed | Good light; old photo → biometric update; face tips |
| Iris failed or no scanner | Ask for OTP or face |
| Nothing works, Aadhaar number locked | Unlock the UID with your latest VID; locks |
What should you do when your fingerprint fails?
The usual advice: retry, try other fingers, and clean the finger and the scanner. If that doesn't work, UIDAI says agencies must offer another way, such as OTP, iris or face. If it keeps failing, update your biometrics.
- Fingerprint failed? Clean the finger and the scanner
- Did another finger work?No: check the screen for error 330 (biometrics locked)
- Did the agency offer OTP, iris or face?No: ask for it; agencies must offer an alternative so a benefit is not denied
- Finish the check by OTP, iris or face
- Fails again and again? Get a biometric update (₹125) at an Aadhaar centre
- New biometrics recorded; try the fingerprint again once the update is complete
- Elderly people and manual workers often face repeated failures, as reported for ration, MGNREGA and pensions. See Aadhaar help for elderly and disabled people.
- Children: the mandatory updates at 5–7 and 15–17 are free. A biometric update for ages 7–15 is free until 30 Sep 2027. Other biometric updates cost ₹125.
- Full guide by place (bank, ration, LPG, EPFO): Fingerprint not matching. The update visit itself: Photo & biometric update.
How does face authentication work, and why does it fail?
Face authentication is a one-to-one match of your live face with the photo stored in your Aadhaar, using the Face RD app. The new Aadhaar App uses it when you register and when you update your mobile number. Reports say new EPFO UANs (since 1 Aug 2025) are allotted or activated only through UMANG with face authentication. News reports say UIDAI launched a Face Authentication SDK in September 2026 so banks can build face checks into their own apps.
- Use good light. The Aadhaar App asks for good light for its face check.
- Old photo? Users report face matches failing for people enrolled as children. A biometric update (₹125) records a new photo.
- Error codes: users report Face RD errors 9609 and 9724. We don't know their official meaning, so we don't explain them here.
- No smartphone? In our experience people do the EPFO face check on someone else's smartphone, such as a family member's.
- Still failing? Ask the agency for OTP or fingerprint instead. For a mobile update, an Aadhaar centre can do it.
More about the app: the new Aadhaar App.
What should you check when OTP authentication fails?
The OTP is a 6-digit code sent by SMS to the mobile registered with your Aadhaar. It is valid only for a short time. Without that SIM, OTP authentication can't work.
- Don't keep pressing "send OTP". UIDAI blocks OTP generation for 30 minutes after too many requests.
- Not sure which number is linked? At our counter we use Verify Email/Mobile Number on myAadhaar / uidai.gov.in: enter the Aadhaar number and the mobile number to check.
- Lost the number? Update it at an Aadhaar centre for ₹75. In our experience any centre can do it the same day with no document, and OTPs start arriving on the new number within 1–2 days. See Update mobile number.
- SMS never arrives although the number is right? UIDAI says to contact your mobile operator.
- A family member's number (for example a father's or son's) can be linked; in our experience this works without problems. OTPs then go to that phone.
How do you check your authentication history?
Your authentication history lists the times your Aadhaar was used to authenticate. UIDAI shows the last 6 months, with up to 50 records per view. Each record shows:
- the type of authentication (OTP, fingerprint, iris, face or demographic);
- the date and time;
- the agency that asked for it (the AUA, such as a bank);
- the transaction ID, the response code and any error.
The authentication history is one of the features UIDAI lists for the new Aadhaar App. UIDAI also says each authentication sends an email notice. Such a notice can only reach you if an email address is linked to your Aadhaar, so check the history in the app as well.
- Open the Aadhaar App on your phone, registered with your Aadhaar
- Open the authentication history
- See the last 6 months: type, time, agency, transaction ID, response code and error
- Do you recognise every record?No: lock your biometrics now; money lost? Call 1930 or use cybercrime.gov.in at once
- All yours. Check again whenever you get an email notice you don't expect
-
Open the Aadhaar App
Use UIDAI's new Aadhaar App (Android 9+ or iOS 16+). Registering needs your Aadhaar number, an OTP, a face check (in good light) and a 6-digit PIN.
-
Read each record
Look at the type, time and agency. A fingerprint check at a bank you never visited is a warning sign.
You'll know it worked when you see a list of your recent authentications with their dates and agencies.
-
Act on anything strange
Lock your biometrics, share only masked copies, and read Aadhaar fraud and scams. If money was taken, report it on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in as fast as you can.
We don't give menu names for the history screen, because UIDAI's app menus change. If you can't find it, call 1947.
What is the difference between authentication, e-KYC, offline e-KYC and the QR code?
These words get mixed up. The key point: online authentication needs your OTP, biometrics or details at that moment, while offline e-KYC and the secure QR are signed data you share, which can be checked without them.
| What | How it works | What you give | Blocked by a lock? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Authentication | An agency checks your OTP, fingerprint, iris, face or details against your Aadhaar record | OTP, biometrics or your details, at that moment | Biometric lock: fingerprint, iris, face. UID lock: everything |
| Bank e-KYC | A bank or similar agency uses Aadhaar authentication for your KYC | OTP or fingerprint at the bank | Yes. While your Aadhaar number is locked, bank e-KYC fails |
| Offline e-KYC XML | You download a file signed by UIDAI and share it yourself | The file: name, address, photo, gender, date of birth, a hash of your mobile and email, a reference ID | Not stated in UIDAI's material we read |
| Secure QR code | The QR on your Aadhaar is read with UIDAI's apps or Windows reader; it works offline | Your card or print: last 4 digits, name, address, gender, date of birth, photo, masked mobile and email | Not stated in UIDAI's material we read |
- Get the offline e-KYC file only from UIDAI's own page, and share it only with someone you trust.
- Businesses that verify customers can register as an offline verification entity (OVSE) and use the app instead of keeping photocopies.
- How to check a QR, XML file or e-Aadhaar PDF: Verify an Aadhaar.
Can you use a VID instead of your Aadhaar number?
Yes. A Virtual ID (VID) is a 16-digit number linked to your Aadhaar. You can give it instead of your 12-digit number. UIDAI says:
- only you can generate it, and it is free; you need your registered mobile;
- only one VID is valid at a time; a new one cancels the old one at once, and you can make a new one after at least one day;
- it has no expiry;
- agencies must not store your VID, and your consent is needed for VID authentication;
- you can download e-Aadhaar with it, and you need your latest VID to unlock a locked Aadhaar number.
What do the biometric lock and the Aadhaar (UID) lock block?
There are two different locks. Most people need only the first one.
| Lock | Blocks | Still works | What you see | To unlock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Biometric lock | Fingerprint, iris and face authentication | OTP | Error 330 when someone tries your biometrics | Registered mobile; Aadhaar App, online, an enrolment centre, an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or SMS |
| Aadhaar (UID) lock | Fingerprint, iris, face, demographic and OTP authentication, with your number, VID or UID token | Nothing that needs authentication | Bank e-KYC and every Aadhaar check fail | Your latest 16-digit VID + OTP, on UIDAI's site or in the Aadhaar App |
- A biometric lock is the safer everyday choice. It stops fingerprint misuse such as AePS fraud, and OTP keeps working.
- Before a fingerprint check at a bank, ration shop or gas agency, unlock your biometrics. Lock them again afterwards. Users report banks refusing KYC while biometrics are locked.
- UID lock facts (UIDAI): a VID is a must before locking; the lock has no expiry; there is no single-use unlock, so it stays unlocked until you lock again; it is free; you need your registered mobile.
- Biometric SMS commands don't work while your Aadhaar number (UID) is locked.
Generate and save your VID first. While the number is locked, no Aadhaar authentication or bank e-KYC works. In our experience unlocking can be hard, because UIDAI's servers are often down. Lock the number only if you really need to; lock your biometrics instead for everyday safety. If you do lock it, use UIDAI's Lock / Unlock Aadhaar page or the Aadhaar App. Full steps: Lock Aadhaar & biometrics, VID.
- Is the SIM registered with your Aadhaar in your phone?No: update your mobile at an Aadhaar centre first
- Use the one-click biometric lock in the Aadhaar App, or the SMS route below
- SMS route: send
GETOTP+ last 4 digits of Aadhaar to 1947 and get a 6-digit OTP - Send
ENABLEBIOLOCK+ the same digits + the OTP to 1947 - Biometrics locked: fingerprint, iris and face checks now fail with error 330
Send each to 1947 from your registered mobile. Unlock biometrics: GETOTP 1987, then DISABLEBIOLOCK 1987 012345. Lock biometrics: GETOTP 1987, then ENABLEBIOLOCK 1987 012345. Use your own last 4 digits of Aadhaar (or last 6 of VID) and your own OTP.
This works only on your phone. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Never type your full Aadhaar number into any website except uidai.gov.in.
Example numbers above: Aadhaar ending 1987, OTP 012345. Two family members on one mobile whose Aadhaar numbers end in the same 4 digits? Use the last 8 digits of Aadhaar in SMS 2. For VIDs ending in the same 6 digits, use the last 10 digits of the VID. These longer forms go only in SMS 2, never in GETOTP. All 1947 SMS formats: SMS command generator (1947).
How does AePS fraud happen, and how do you stop it?
AePS lets people withdraw cash at a micro-ATM with their Aadhaar number and fingerprint. Fraudsters misuse this. As reported by Gujarat's cyber-crime police:
- they take the Aadhaar number from photocopies;
- they lift the fingerprint from property documents or make a silicone clone;
- they withdraw cash at a micro-ATM. No OTP is involved, so you get no warning code.
Protect yourself: lock your biometrics, share only masked copies of Aadhaar (last 4 digits), and check your authentication history. If money is taken, call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in within the "golden hour", as fast as you can.

Who may ask you to authenticate with Aadhaar?
- Government benefits and subsidies: as reported, the Supreme Court's 2018 judgment (Puttaswamy) allows Aadhaar to be required for subsidies and benefits under section 7 of the Aadhaar Act. For example, biometric Aadhaar authentication is needed to book subsidised LPG from 1 Oct 2026. In our experience gas agencies ask all customers.
- Private companies: under the Good Governance Amendment Rules of 31 Jan 2025, a private entity may use Aadhaar authentication only with approval from MeitY (the IT ministry).
- PAN and income-tax returns: as reported, the same judgment upheld the Aadhaar requirement for PAN (section 139AA of the Income-tax Act). Linking is done with an OTP on your Aadhaar mobile; a PAN that must be linked but isn't becomes inoperative.
- Not mandatory for opening a bank account, getting a SIM card or school admission, according to reports of the same judgment.

What goes wrong with Aadhaar authentication, and how do you fix it?
| Problem | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Fingerprint fails on every finger | Often reported for elderly people and manual workers | Ask for OTP, iris or face; then a biometric update (₹125) |
| Error 330 | Biometrics locked | Unlock, finish the check, lock again (locks) |
| Agency won't offer OTP, iris or face | UIDAI says agencies must offer an alternative | Ask politely and mention the rule; call 1947 for help |
| OTP doesn't come | Too many requests, network trouble, or the wrong mobile is linked | Wait 30 minutes; check the linked number; contact your mobile operator |
| Face check fails in the Aadhaar App | Poor light or an old photo | Good light; a biometric update for a new photo; a centre for mobile updates |
| Face RD error 9609 or 9724 | Reported by users; official meaning not known to us | Retry in good light; ask for another way; call 1947 |
| Everything fails, even OTP | Your Aadhaar number (UID) may be locked | Unlock with your latest VID on UIDAI's site or in the app |
| Biometric lock page stuck | Users report this | Use the Aadhaar App or the SMS route to 1947 |
| Biometric SMS gets no reply | Not sent from the registered mobile, the UID is locked, or the SMS was not delivered | Send from the registered mobile; unlock the UID first; SMS not delivered? Contact your mobile operator |
| Email notice or history record you don't recognise | Someone may have used your Aadhaar | Lock biometrics; check the history; report on 1930 if money was lost |
| Child's fingerprint never works | Under 5s give only a photo | Fingerprints are added at the free update at 5–7 |
For a biometric update, go to an authorised Aadhaar centre. Aadhaar Seva Kendras usually open on Sundays too; most work 9:30 am to 5:30 pm; the centre we visited closes for lunch from 1 to 2 pm. Check your centre before you go.
Aadhaar authentication from abroad
- OTP authentication needs your registered Indian mobile, with the SIM able to receive SMS. A non-Indian mobile number gets no SMS from UIDAI.
- Keep your Indian SIM active if you need OTPs for e-Aadhaar, myAadhaar or banking.
- Reports say fingerprint, iris and face can be updated only at an Aadhaar centre in India, with no embassy route.
- The secure QR code works offline, so someone abroad can check it with UIDAI's apps or Windows reader.
Region not right?
Authentication scams
- Never share an OTP with a caller, even one who says your Aadhaar "will be blocked" or that they are from UIDAI or a bank.
- Never install a screen-sharing app (AnyDesk-type) because a caller asks. Ignore links by SMS or WhatsApp; use only uidai.gov.in sites and UIDAI's Aadhaar App.
- Fraudsters have lifted fingerprints from property documents. Fingerprint fraud at micro-ATMs needs no OTP, so lock your biometrics.
- Money lost? Call 1930 or use cybercrime.gov.in at once.
Frequently asked questions
What is Aadhaar authentication?
A check that you are the Aadhaar holder. An agency matches your OTP, fingerprint, iris, face or details with your Aadhaar record.
What does error 330 mean?
Your biometrics are locked. Unlock them in the Aadhaar App, online, at a centre or by SMS, finish the check, then lock again.
Does OTP work when my biometrics are locked?
Yes. The biometric lock covers fingerprint, iris and face only. A lock on the whole Aadhaar number (UID) blocks OTP too.
My fingerprint doesn't match. Can the agency refuse me?
UIDAI says agencies must offer an alternative, such as OTP, iris or face, so a benefit is not denied.
How does face authentication work?
Your face is matched one to one with the photo in your Aadhaar, using the Face RD app. Good light helps. An old photo can make it fail; a biometric update records a new one.
How far back does the authentication history go?
UIDAI shows the last 6 months, up to 50 records per view, with the type, time, agency, transaction ID, response code and error.
Will I be told when my Aadhaar is used?
UIDAI says each authentication sends an email notice. That needs an email linked to your Aadhaar, so also check the history in the Aadhaar App.
Is offline e-KYC the same as authentication?
No. Offline e-KYC is a UIDAI-signed file you share yourself. Authentication checks your OTP, biometrics or details at that moment.
Can a private company authenticate my Aadhaar?
Only with approval from MeitY, under the Good Governance Amendment Rules of 31 Jan 2025.
Can I get an Aadhaar OTP on a foreign mobile number?
No. A non-Indian mobile number gets no SMS from UIDAI. Keep your registered Indian SIM active.
Bottom line
If one way to authenticate fails, ask for another: OTP, iris or face. Error 330 means your biometrics are locked, not that your finger is bad. Lock your biometrics when you don't need them, and check your authentication history now and then. For help, UIDAI's free helpline is 1947.
