How to Link Aadhaar (Aadhar) with Your Ration Card and Do Ration e-KYC?

Ration card e-KYC is an Aadhaar check of each family member on the ration shop's ePoS machine, and it is free. There is no national deadline; each state sets its own. If your fingerprints don't match, ask for another way such as OTP, iris or face. If they keep failing, get a biometric update (₹125) at an Aadhaar centre.

This guide is for families who already have a ration card and Aadhaar. It covers the e-KYC at the ration shop and what to do when fingerprints fail. Every state runs its own ration process, so we don't list state portals.

What is ration card e-KYC, and is Aadhaar compulsory for it?

"Linking Aadhaar with your ration card" today usually means ration e-KYC. Each member on the card proves who they are with an Aadhaar check at the ration shop. The check runs on the shop's ePoS machine (electronic point-of-sale machine).

  • It is free. e-KYC on the ration shop's ePoS machine costs nothing.
  • Another route: the Mera Ration 2.0 app is also named as an option. Ask your dealer or state food department whether it works for your card.
  • Why Aadhaar can be asked: news reports summarise the Supreme Court's 2018 Aadhaar ruling this way. Aadhaar can be made mandatory for subsidies and benefits under section 7 of the Aadhaar Act. Subsidised ration is such a benefit.
  • No deletion for failed fingerprints: the Department of Food & Public Distribution (DFPD) has said no genuine household may be deleted because of biometric failure.
Not the same as bank seeding

Ration e-KYC doesn't decide where government money goes. Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) money goes to the one bank account your Aadhaar is seeded to on NPCI's mapper. See Bank seeding & DBT not received.

Is there a last date for ration e-KYC, and what happens if you miss it?

There is no national deadline. Each state sets its own last date and its own process. A date in a forwarded message may be for another state. Ask your ration dealer or your state food department for your state's date.

QuestionAnswer
Is there one all-India last date? No. States set their own
Is the name deleted if e-KYC isn't done?In our experience, no. The member or the card is put on hold or made inactive
Can a household be deleted because fingerprints fail? No. DFPD has said no genuine household may be deleted for biometric failure
What does e-KYC cost?₹0 on the ration shop's ePoS machine

So don't panic over a "last chance" message. Finish the e-KYC before your own state's date, and check with your dealer that each member is done.

How do you do ration e-KYC at the ration shop?

Most families do it on the ePoS machine at their own ration shop. The flowchart shows the usual path, including what to do if a fingerprint doesn't match.

e-KYC at the ration shop (ePoS)
  1. Ask your ration dealer which members still need e-KYC, and your state's last date
  2. Each member who needs e-KYC goes to the ration shop in person
  3. Give your fingerprint on the shop's ePoS machine
  4. Did the fingerprint match? Retry and try other fingers firstNo: ask for another way: OTP, iris or face
  5. Is the e-KYC done, by fingerprint or the other way?No: get a biometric update (₹125) at an Aadhaar centre, then go back to the shop
  6. Ask the dealer to confirm the e-KYC is done for each member
  1. Find out who still needs e-KYC

Ask your ration dealer which members on your card still need e-KYC, and what your state's last date is. Use the question list below.

  2. Go to the ration shop in person

e-KYC is a check of your own fingerprint (or another Aadhaar check), so each member must be there. Ask the dealer beforehand what to bring.

  3. Give your fingerprint on the ePoS machine

Clean your finger first. If it doesn't match, try again and try your other fingers. Ask the dealer to wipe the scanner too.

Still not matching? Ask for another way, such as OTP, iris or face. UIDAI says agencies must offer an alternative so that a benefit is not denied. More below.

  4. Confirm it is done for every member

Ask the dealer to check that each member's e-KYC went through. A family can have one member done and another still pending.

You'll know it worked when the dealer confirms the e-KYC is done for that member.

e-KYC on the ePoS machine is free. If anyone asks you to pay for it, don't pay; ask your state food department how to complain.

What if your fingerprints don't match at the ration shop?

It happens to many people. A 2025 parliamentary committee report (PAC) is reported to have noted biometric failures for labourers and elderly people in ration, MGNREGA and pensions. A dirty finger or scanner is one simple cause. Try these steps in order; they follow UIDAI's advice for when biometrics fail.

Fingerprint not matching at the ration shop
  1. Try again, and try your other fingers
  2. Clean your finger and the scanner, then retry
  3. Did the shop offer another way: OTP, iris or face? No: ask for it; agencies must offer an alternative so you don't lose the benefit
  4. Still failing often? Get a biometric update (₹125) at an Aadhaar centre
  5. New fingerprints recorded; go back to the ration shop for e-KYC
  • Retry first. Use other fingers, clean the finger, and ask for the scanner to be wiped. UIDAI gives this advice when biometrics fail.
  • Ask for an alternative. UIDAI says agencies must offer another way, such as OTP, iris or face, so a benefit is not denied. Users report that most ration shops have no iris scanner, so ask which option your shop or state offers.
  • OTP needs a working mobile on your Aadhaar. If the number is old, update it at an Aadhaar centre for ₹75. See Update your Aadhaar mobile number.
  • Then a biometric update. If your fingerprints keep failing, UIDAI's advice is a biometric update at an Aadhaar centre. It costs ₹125. See Photo & biometric update.
  • Error 330? That means your biometrics are locked, not that your finger is bad. Unlock them on myAadhaar, in the Aadhaar App or at a centre (you need your registered mobile). See Lock Aadhaar & biometrics.

More fixes for each case: Fingerprints not matching.

What happens in your situation, and what should you do?

Find the row that fits your family. Rules differ by state, so confirm the details with your ration dealer.

What should you ask your ration dealer or state food department?

Each state runs its own ration e-KYC process and sets its own deadline. We don't list state websites here, because we can't confirm each one. Ask these questions instead; your dealer or state food department can answer them for your card.

  • What is our state's last date for ration e-KYC?
  • Which members on our card still need e-KYC? Is anyone on hold?
  • What should each member bring to the shop?
  • If fingerprints fail, which alternative does your ePoS machine offer: OTP, iris or face?
  • Is there an option for elderly, disabled or bedridden members?
  • What do our children need to do, and from what age?
  • How can a member living in another place finish e-KYC? Does the Mera Ration 2.0 app work for our card?
  • If a member is on hold, how is the member made active again after e-KYC?
  • Where can we complain if e-KYC is refused or someone asks for money?
From our counter

We haven't seen ration card names deleted for a missing e-KYC. The member or card is put on hold until e-KYC is done. A biometric update needs an authorised Aadhaar centre; a normal CSC or cyber café can only order PVC cards, print and download e-Aadhaar. For elderly, disabled or bedridden people, home service can sometimes be arranged. Prior permission from the UIDAI Regional Office may be needed, and the full fee is charged.

When do you need to visit an Aadhaar centre?

The e-KYC itself usually happens at the ration shop. You need an Aadhaar centre only when your Aadhaar record needs fixing first. To add up the fee for your visit, use the Aadhaar fee calculator.

  • Which centre? In our experience a normal CSC or cyber café can only order PVC cards, print and download e-Aadhaar. Updates need an authorised Aadhaar centre; see Aadhaar centres: what to expect.
  • New mobile number: in our experience, a centre updates it the same day, and OTPs usually start coming within 1–2 days.
  • IPPB doorstep: in our experience, India Post Payments Bank's doorstep service covers mobile updates, new child enrolment (0–5) and a child's mandatory biometric update. IPPB's own website lists the mobile update (₹75) only at selected post offices and child enrolment at a few, and does not list the child update, so ask your post office first. In our experience booking can be unreliable: sometimes the postman comes late or not at all. See Aadhaar services at home (IPPB).
  • Aadhaar deactivated, or a living member marked dead? Ration has been reported to stop in such cases. See Aadhaar deactivated? Reactivate.

Ration e-KYC for members abroad

  • e-KYC is a check at the ration shop in India. Each state sets its own rules for members who live away. Ask your family's ration dealer or the state food department what applies to you.
  • A biometric update needs a visit to India. Reports say there is no embassy or online route. It costs ₹125.
  • OTP: an OTP goes to the mobile registered with your Aadhaar. NRIs abroad without an Indian SIM report that OTPs don't arrive, so keep that SIM active or update the number on your next visit.
  • Never send your OTP or Aadhaar number to anyone who offers to "finish your e-KYC" for you from India.

Warning

Fake ration e-KYC links and calls

  • Treat any SMS or WhatsApp link that says "do e-KYC on this link or your ration card will be cancelled" as a scam. In our experience, fake "update Aadhaar from home" links are common. Do e-KYC at the ration shop, or ask your dealer about the Mera Ration 2.0 app.
  • A caller who says "your Aadhaar will be blocked" and asks for an OTP or your Aadhaar number is a scammer. Hang up.
  • Never install a screen-sharing app (AnyDesk-type) or an "e-KYC" app from a link a stranger sends.
  • Fingerprints can be misused to withdraw cash at micro-ATMs (AePS fraud). Lock your biometrics when you don't need them, and share only masked Aadhaar copies. Lost money? Call 1930 or use cybercrime.gov.in quickly. More warning signs: Aadhaar fraud & scams.
  • Ration e-KYC is free. Never share an OTP with a caller or on a link.

Frequently asked questions

What is the last date for ration card e-KYC?

There is no national deadline. Each state sets its own last date. Ask your ration dealer or state food department for yours.

Will my name be removed from the ration card if I don't do e-KYC?

In our experience, no. The member or card is put on hold or made inactive until e-KYC is done. The food department has also said no genuine household may be deleted because of biometric failure.

How much does ration e-KYC cost?

Nothing. e-KYC on the ration shop's ePoS machine is free. Don't pay anyone for it.

My fingerprints don't match at the ration shop. What can I do?

Retry with other fingers and clean the finger and scanner. Ask for another way, such as OTP, iris or face; UIDAI says agencies must offer an alternative. If it keeps failing, get a biometric update (₹125) at an Aadhaar centre.

My elderly parent's fingerprints never work. Is there another way?

Ask the dealer what alternative your state allows. Users report that the elderly bypass is limited and most shops have no iris scanner. Keep the Aadhaar mobile working for OTP, and consider a biometric update.

Can I do ration e-KYC online or on my phone?

The Mera Ration 2.0 app is named as an option. Ask your dealer or state food department whether it works for your card. Never use a link sent by SMS or WhatsApp.

Is Aadhaar compulsory for a ration card?

News reports summarise the 2018 Supreme Court ruling: Aadhaar can be made mandatory for subsidies and benefits under section 7 of the Aadhaar Act. Subsidised ration is such a benefit, so states ask for e-KYC.

Do children need ration e-KYC?

Your state decides; ask the dealer. A child under 5 has only a photo on Aadhaar. Fingerprints are added at the mandatory biometric update, free at 5–7 and 15–17. A biometric update at 7–15 is also free until 30 Sep 2027.

If I change my address on Aadhaar, does my ration card change too?

In our experience, no. Update the ration card separately with your state food department.

My e-KYC fails with error 330. What does it mean?

Your Aadhaar biometrics are locked. Unlock them on myAadhaar, in the Aadhaar App or at a centre, using your registered mobile. Then try e-KYC again.

Bottom line

Ration e-KYC is free at your ration shop, and your state sets the deadline. If fingerprints fail, ask for OTP, iris or face, and get a biometric update if needed. In our experience a missed e-KYC puts a member on hold; it doesn't delete the name. For Aadhaar problems, call UIDAI's helpline 1947.
