How to Change Date of Birth in Aadhaar (Aadhar)?

You can change the date of birth in Aadhaar only once in your lifetime, and only at an Aadhaar centre, for ₹75. Take an original date-of-birth proof, such as a birth certificate, passport or 10th marksheet. Children under 18 need a birth certificate. If your one chance is already used, ask UIDAI's Regional Office for an exception.

Which route fits your case?

Answer a few questions to see what you need. If you don't remember which document you gave at enrolment, take all your DOB documents to the centre.

How many times can you change your date of birth?

Only once in a lifetime. UIDAI set this limit in 2019, and a later circular says it applies whatever your DOB status is. For comparison, the name can be changed twice and gender once.

  • What doesn't count: UIDAI's 2021 rules say operator typing errors, transliteration errors and regional-language changes don't use up your limit.
  • Valid reasons for a DOB change under UIDAI's DOB rules of 24 Dec 2025:
    • your DOB was declared or approximate, and you now have a document that proves it;
    • the operator made a mistake;
    • a false document was used earlier and is now being corrected. UIDAI treats this as a "last opportunity".

Because you get only one chance, check the date on your document carefully before you go. See all limits and fees on Aadhaar update: fees and limits.

What is a declared, approximate or verified date of birth?

Your Aadhaar records not just your DOB but also how it was given. That decides which document you need now.

  • Declared or approximate: you told your date (or a rough date) at enrolment, without a document to prove it.
  • Verified: a DOB document, such as a birth certificate or passport, was checked when your Aadhaar was made or updated.

On UIDAI's 2026 forms, "Verified" is ticked only when a DOB proof is shown; for a declared or approximate DOB only the year of birth is printed on the card. Changing a declared date to a proven one is the simplest case. Changing a verified date is stricter, because a document already backs it.

Which route: declared or verified DOB?
  1. Think back: did you show a DOB document when your Aadhaar was made?
  2. Was your DOB declared or approximate (no proof given)? No: it is verified. You need a corrected copy of the same document, or a birth certificate. See the table
  3. Is the person 18 or older? No: under 18, only a birth certificate is accepted. See the table
  4. Choose any listed DOB proof: passport, birth certificate, marksheet and more
  5. Update at an Aadhaar centre for ₹75

Which document works for whom?

This table follows UIDAI's DOB rules of 24 Dec 2025. Find your current DOB status in the first column.

Listed DOB proofs (UIDAI's official list)

  • Indian passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Marksheet or board / university certificate (10th, 12th and so on)
  • Government, PSU or statutory body service photo ID card
  • Pensioner or freedom fighter ID card, or Pension Payment Order
  • Transgender ID card or certificate (under the 2019 Act)

Children born on or after 1 Oct 2023: the birth certificate is the only DOB proof. Married women whose DOB proof is in the maiden name: UIDAI's list accepts it together with proof of the name change, such as the old Aadhaar or a marriage certificate showing both names.

Not accepted as DOB proof: PAN card, voter ID, driving licence, ration card and certificates in UIDAI's format from an MP, MLA or gazetted officer. Your Aadhaar itself is not a DOB proof either. Take original documents; at our counter we find centres don't accept DigiLocker copies on a phone. For every purpose of every document, see Documents required for Aadhaar, or check yours with the document checker.

From our counter

A 10th or 12th marksheet is accepted as DOB proof. Centres check the paper itself; we haven't seen an online check with the board. In our experience since the new DOB rules, older documents are often still accepted for updates, depending on age, while for new Aadhaar enrolments a birth certificate is asked for (this can vary by centre).

How do you change your date of birth at an Aadhaar centre?

As of October 2026, DOB can't be changed in the Aadhaar App or on myAadhaar. UIDAI says it may come to the app later "in phases".

DOB change at the centre
  1. Book a free slot or walk in, with your original DOB proof
  2. The operator enters the new DOB and scans your proof
  3. Does the date on screen match your document exactly? No: ask for a correction before you give your fingerprint. You get only one chance.
  4. Give your fingerprint or iris
  5. Pay ₹75 and keep the update slip
  6. Track with the number on your slip, then download the new e-Aadhaar
  1. Book a slot or walk in

Booking is free at bookappointment.uidai.gov.in for listed centres; other centres are walk-in only. Aadhaar Seva Kendras usually open on Sundays too. Most work 9:30 am to 5:30 pm with a lunch break from 1 to 2 pm, so avoid arriving at 1 pm.

  2. Carry your original DOB proof

Take the original document from the table above and your Aadhaar. If the operator made the earlier mistake, take the same document you gave then.

  3. Check the date on screen before giving biometrics

Read the day, month and year on the operator's screen. Compare it with your document. Ask for a fix before you give your fingerprint or iris.

  4. Pay ₹75 and keep the update slip

The fee is ₹75. It's free if you also do a biometric update (₹125) in the same visit. The acknowledgement slip carries the number you use to track the request.

Keep the slip safe. You need its number to track the request, and for the Regional Office route if it is ever needed.

  5. Track the request

Enter the number on your slip under Check Enrolment or Update Status on myAadhaar. Once it's updated, download the new e-Aadhaar.

What if you have already used your one DOB change?

UIDAI has an exception route through its Regional Office (RO). Centres must still accept your request; the RO then decides.

Limit used: the Regional Office route
  1. Have you already used your one DOB change? No: update at a centre normally
  2. Apply for the DOB update at a centre anyway and keep the update slip (URN)
  3. Email or post the URN slip and your proofs to the UIDAI Regional Office, or call 1947
  4. The Regional Office checks your case
  5. If approved, UIDAI's Tech Centre reprocesses the request
  6. DOB updated: download the new e-Aadhaar
  1. Apply at a centre and keep the URN slip

Registrars must accept your request even when the limit is used. The URN slip is your proof that you applied.

  2. Send the slip and your proofs to the Regional Office

Email or post a copy of the URN slip with your DOB proofs to your UIDAI Regional Office. You can also call 1947. UIDAI has Regional Offices in Bengaluru, Chandigarh, New Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Mumbai and Ranchi.

  3. Follow up and keep records

There is no fixed timeline for a decision. Keep copies of everything you send. If nothing happens, see Aadhaar complaint and escalation.

People often reach this point even when their marksheet and birth certificate match. Some cases have gone to the High Court; see what courts have said.

What should you never do when changing your DOB?

  • Never use a false or edited document. Some people enrolled as a child under 5 but were older, or as a minor but were 18 or over. In such age-fraud cases, the update is rejected. The Aadhaar may also be deactivated.
  • Getting it back is hard. Reactivation goes through the Regional Office. It needs a full biometric update, a birth certificate that can be checked online, and the Annexure-III affidavit. See Aadhaar deactivated?
  • Don't waste your one chance. Make sure the new date is the one you'll use everywhere: school records, PAN, bank and job.
  • Foreign nationals with Aadhaar can change DOB only to fix an operator error.

What should you do after the DOB update?

  • Download the new e-Aadhaar. The OTP goes to your registered mobile. Download e-Aadhaar.
  • Note the new PDF password. It is the first 4 letters of your name in CAPITALS plus your year of birth. If the year changed, use the new year; the PDF password helper works it out.
  • Fix the same date elsewhere. Your PAN, bank and EPF records don't change by themselves. A mismatch can block PAN–Aadhaar linking, which needs name, date of birth and gender to match (if the name differs too, compare it with our PAN vs Aadhaar name checker). See Fix a name or DOB mismatch and Link Aadhaar with PAN.
  • PAN: if it shows a different DOB, correct it through Protean or UTIITSL; the steps are in our guide correct date of birth in PAN. If linking already failed, see PAN–Aadhaar link problems.
  • EPF: EPFO said in January 2025 that profiles with a verified Aadhaar can be self-corrected without documents. See Link Aadhaar with EPF/UAN.
  • Remember: Aadhaar is not proof of date of birth. News reports say the Supreme Court held this in 2024 (Saroj v IFFCO-Tokio), and EPFO reportedly removed it as DOB proof in January 2024. Keep your birth certificate or marksheet for that.

What have courts said about DOB correction?

If you feel stuck, these reported rulings show that courts take Aadhaar corrections seriously:

  • Madras High Court (17 Oct 2025): correcting your Aadhaar is a fundamental right. The court noted that the Madurai Aadhaar Seva Kendra was the only DOB-correction point for south Tamil Nadu; 28 new centres were proposed.
  • Uttarakhand High Court (7 May 2026): the Regional Office was ordered to fix a person's DOB within 10 days.
  • Delhi High Court (16 Mar 2026): a late birth registration needs an order from the DM or SDM, and that must be decided within 3 months. This matters if you have no birth certificate yet.

These rulings were about specific cases. Try the centre and Regional Office route first.

Changing your DOB as an NRI

  • A DOB change needs an Aadhaar centre in India. There is no online or embassy route.
  • Your valid Indian passport is accepted as DOB proof.
  • NRI children under 18 with a declared DOB can use a birth certificate or an Indian passport.
  • Foreign nationals, including OCI cardholders, can change DOB only to fix an operator error.

Warning

DOB-change scams and frauds

  • DOB can be changed only at an Aadhaar centre. Any link or WhatsApp message offering "DOB change from home" is fake.
  • UIDAI will never call you for your OTP. Don't install screen-sharing apps when a stranger asks.
  • Don't buy fake birth certificates or marksheets. A café owner was reportedly arrested in 2025 for forging Aadhaar and Ayushman cards.
  • The fee is ₹75. If a centre charges more, complain on 1947 or [email protected].

Frequently asked questions

How many times can I change my date of birth in Aadhaar?

Once in a lifetime, whatever your DOB status. Operator typing errors don't count against the limit. After that, only the Regional Office exception route is left.

Can I change my date of birth online?

No. As of October 2026, DOB changes need an Aadhaar centre. UIDAI says it may come to the app later "in phases".

What is the fee for a DOB change?

₹75 at the centre. It's included free if you do a biometric update (₹125) in the same visit.

Which document do I need for my child's DOB?

If the child is under 18 and the DOB was declared or approximate, only a birth certificate is accepted. NRI children can also use an Indian passport.

Is a 10th marksheet accepted for DOB?

Yes, for adults. A marksheet or board certificate is on UIDAI's DOB list. In our experience, centres check the paper itself.

My DOB limit is over. What can I do?

Apply at a centre anyway and keep the update slip. Then email or post it with your proofs to the UIDAI Regional Office, or call 1947.

How long does the Regional Office take?

UIDAI gives no fixed timeline. Keep copies and follow up on 1947 with the number on your slip.

Can I use Aadhaar as proof of date of birth?

No. News reports say the Supreme Court held in 2024 that Aadhaar is not DOB proof, and EPFO reportedly stopped accepting it for DOB in January 2024.

Does a gazetted officer's certificate work as DOB proof?

No. Certificates in UIDAI's format are address proof only, not DOB proof.

Bottom line

You get one DOB change, so do it right. Take the correct original proof to an Aadhaar centre, check the date on screen and pay ₹75. If your chance is used, the Regional Office route is still open. For help, UIDAI's free helpline is 1947.
