What Are the Most Common Aadhaar (Aadhar) Mistakes, and How Do You Avoid Them?
In our experience, when an Aadhaar update is rejected, the reason is usually simple: a blurred or cropped scan, an address typed differently from the proof, or an old bill. Names that don't match across your documents are another big one. Carry originals, check the operator's screen, and remember that name, date of birth and gender have lifetime limits.

What should you check before you go to the Aadhaar centre?
This page collects the mistakes our counter team sees most often, with what happens and how to avoid each one. Many of them can be caught at home. Run through this check before you leave; it can save you a second trip.
- Pick documents from UIDAI's list and carry the physical originals
- Is every bill at most 3 months old, and any certificate less than 3 months old?No: get a fresh bill or a new certificate first
- Do your name, your father's or husband's name and your date of birth match on every document? No: fix the mismatch first
- Changing name, date of birth or gender: are you sure of the final spelling or date? No: wait. These have lifetime limits (see why)
- Do the details on the operator's screen match your documents? No: ask for a correction before you give your fingerprint or iris
- Pay the official fee (₹75, or ₹125 with biometrics) and keep the update slip
- Track the update with the number on your slip
-
Choose documents from the official list
Each document proves something specific: identity (PoI), address (PoA) or date of birth. A marksheet proves your name and date of birth, but never your address. Check your purpose in Documents required for Aadhaar, or run your papers through the document checker.
-
Check the dates on bills and certificates
Electricity, water, gas and phone bills must be at most 3 months old. A certificate in UIDAI's format is valid for 3 months from issue. An insurance policy counts for up to 1 year, and a property tax receipt must be at most 1 year old.
-
Compare names across all your documents
Your name, your father's or husband's name and your date of birth should read the same everywhere. Fix any difference before you apply.
-
Be sure before you use a lifetime chance
Name can be changed twice, date of birth and gender once. Bring the final, correct document, not a temporary one.
-
Read the operator's screen
Check every detail on the screen before you give your fingerprint or iris. Ask the operator to correct anything that differs from your documents.
-
Keep the update slip
The number printed on your slip is how you track the update on UIDAI's Check Enrolment / Update Status page. See Update status and rejection fixes.
You'll know it worked when the status page shows your update as complete.
When should you go to a centre instead of trying online?
| If you need to… | Then go… |
|---|---|
| Change your name, date of birth or gender | To a centre. The Aadhaar App doesn't offer these yet (UIDAI says they "may be added in phases") |
| Update your photo, fingerprints or iris | To a centre (₹125; written changes in the same visit are included) |
| Add or change a mobile when you can't get OTPs on the old number | To a centre (₹75; in our experience no document is needed) |
| Update your address, with a working registered mobile and a proof | Online on myAadhaar or the Aadhaar App (₹75), or a centre |
| Refresh your proof documents | Online on myAadhaar: free until 14 June 2027 (₹75 at a centre) |
- Don't pay for a slot. Booking an Aadhaar Seva Kendra slot on bookappointment.uidai.gov.in is free, and UIDAI says you don't need an Aadhaar-linked mobile for it. Don't pay an agent for one. In our experience, centres not listed there are walk-in only.
- Don't arrive at lunch time. The centre our team visited works 9:30 am–1 pm and 2–5:30 pm, with no service from 1 to 2 pm. Check your own centre's hours.
- The fee is the same everywhere: ₹75 for written details, ₹125 for biometrics. Old figures like ₹50 or ₹100 are outdated.
Which document mistakes get an Aadhaar update rejected?
These are the document problems we see most at our counter. Each card shows the mistake, what happens and how to avoid or fix it.
-
Bringing a DigiLocker copy to the centre
What happens: in our experience the centre won't accept it. Aadhaar centres take only physical original documents.
Avoid or fix: carry the original. In our experience, a printout of an e-document, such as an e-voter ID or e-ration card, works if it shows a valid digital signature.
-
Printing an e-document without checking its signature
What happens: in our experience the centre accepts an e-document printout only if the digital signature shows as valid (a green tick) on the print.
Avoid or fix: open the PDF, validate the signature first, then print. We do this in Adobe Reader at our counter.
-
Using an old bill, or one in your landlord's name
What happens: a bill older than 3 months is rejected; at our counter this rule is strictly enforced. A landlord's bill is not accepted either.
Avoid or fix: use a bill in your own, your father's or your family's name, at most 3 months old. Tenants can use a rent agreement; UIDAI accepts registered and unregistered ones. In our experience it should still be notarised: agreements without a notary stamp are among the documents we see rejected most.
-
A certificate in the wrong format, or too old
What happens: a gazetted-officer, MLA or Tehsildar certificate in the wrong format is one of the most rejected documents at our counter. It is valid for only 3 months, and that is strictly checked.
Avoid or fix: use UIDAI's own format, with a 3.5×4.5 cm colour photo that is cross-signed and stamped, and no overwriting. Officially it proves address only, so carry a separate identity proof. Plan ahead: officers often refuse to sign.
-
Relying only on a gram pradhan certificate
What happens: a village head's certificate is on UIDAI's list for rural areas, but at our counter it often gets rejected.
Avoid or fix: if you can, carry another accepted address proof as a backup.
-
A bank passbook without photo or stamp
What happens: in our experience it gets rejected. On UIDAI's official list, a photo passbook counts as address proof for updates only. It must show your name and photo and be stamped by the bank.
Avoid or fix: ask your bank to add your photo and stamp. For a new Aadhaar, carry a different address proof.
-
Using a marksheet or PAN card as address proof
What happens: it is not accepted. A 10th or 12th marksheet proves your name and date of birth, never your address. PAN is not on any of UIDAI's document lists.
Avoid or fix: pick an address proof from the official list, such as a recent bill or a rent agreement. A bank passbook with photo works for updates only.
-
A blurred, cropped or unsigned document
What happens: a blurred or cropped scan is one of the most common rejection reasons we see. Online, UIDAI rejects a document that isn't a clear colour scan. In our experience a document missing its signature or stamp is also rejected.
Avoid or fix: scan in colour with all four corners showing and no glare. Check that the document carries every signature and stamp it should.
-
Skipping the 10-year document update
What happens: your Aadhaar is not deactivated. But in our experience some services and KYC checks can get stuck.
Avoid or fix: if your proof documents in Aadhaar are 10 or more years old, refresh them. It's free on myAadhaar until 14 June 2027.
The documents we see rejected most: a gazetted-officer certificate in the wrong format, an old electricity or water bill or one in another person's name, a bank passbook without photo or stamp, and a rent agreement without a notary stamp. The usual reasons: the name is spelt differently from Aadhaar, the scan is blurred or cropped, the document is too old, or a signature or stamp is missing.
Which address mistakes get an update rejected?
In our experience, most online address updates (over 80%) go through. When one fails, it is usually because of how the address was typed or which document was used.
-
Typing the address differently from the proof
What happens: UIDAI rejects an online update when the typed address doesn't match the document. This is one of the main rejection reasons we see.
Avoid or fix: copy the words and their order from the proof, field by field. If the bill says "Ward No. 5, Rampur", don't type "Near Shiv Mandir, Ward 5".
-
Entering the wrong PIN code
What happens: in our experience a wrong PIN code is a common reason for trouble.
Avoid or fix: copy the PIN code exactly as printed on your proof.
-
Repeating parts, or putting the landmark in the wrong field
What happens: an address that is too long, repeats the town name in several fields, or has the landmark in the street field often causes problems in our experience.
Avoid or fix: type each part once, in its own field. Put a landmark only in the Landmark field, or leave it out. The C/O (care of) field is optional.
-
Not warning your Head of Family
What happens: with the Head of Family (HoF) route, the family member must approve your request within 30 days. If they don't, it closes automatically and the fee is not refunded.
Avoid or fix: tell them before you apply. They approve under Services → Family Member Request. UIDAI's 2026 forms allow your mother, father, legal guardian, spouse, child/ward or sibling, aged 18+, as HoF for an address update.
-
Expecting your ration card or voter ID to change too
What happens: in our experience a new Aadhaar address does not change your ration card or voter ID.
Avoid or fix: update each document separately with its own office.
Step-by-step help, including the Head of Family route: Update your address.
Which name, date-of-birth and gender mistakes cost you the most?
These changes need a centre, and UIDAI limits how often you can make them. A mistake here is the hardest to undo.
| Detail | Lifetime limit |
|---|---|
| Name | Twice |
| Date of birth | Once |
| Gender | Once |
-
Wasting a lifetime chance
What happens: a hasty or wrong update uses up one of your chances. After that, the only way is an exception route through UIDAI's Regional Office, with no fixed timeline.
Avoid or fix: apply only when you hold the final, correct document. Operator typos, transliteration errors and regional-language changes don't count against the limit.
-
Father's or husband's name differs between documents
What happens: in our experience the application gets rejected.
Avoid or fix: correct the document that is wrong first, then apply for the Aadhaar update. If the mistake is on your PAN, see PAN correction.
-
Small spelling differences between documents
What happens: "Mohd" on one document and "Mohammad" on the other is sometimes accepted and sometimes rejected, in our experience. A spelling that differs from Aadhaar is one of the common rejection reasons we see.
Avoid or fix: make the spellings the same before you apply. UIDAI enters the name exactly as written on the document, without titles such as Mr or Dr.
-
Bringing the wrong date-of-birth proof
What happens: under UIDAI's date-of-birth rules of Dec 2025, a child under 18 whose date of birth was declared or approximate can change it only with a birth certificate. Other proofs are refused.
Avoid or fix: check which proof your case needs before you go. Adults with a declared date of birth can use any listed proof; in our experience a 10th or 12th marksheet is accepted.
Which download and card mistakes do people make?
-
Trying to download with just name and date of birth
What happens: it doesn't work; this is a myth. Every download needs your Aadhaar number, Enrolment ID (EID) or Virtual ID (VID), plus an OTP on your registered mobile.
Avoid or fix: use one of those numbers, or visit a centre. Lost the number? Use Retrieve EID / UID on myAadhaar with your name and registered mobile or email.
-
Getting the PDF password wrong
What happens: the e-Aadhaar PDF won't open. We see four slips most: small letters instead of CAPITALS, the full date of birth instead of the year, names with dots or spaces handled wrongly, and a Hindi name or nickname.
Avoid or fix: type the first 4 letters of your English name as printed on Aadhaar, in CAPITALS, then your year of birth. Spaces are skipped; a dot counts.
Name on Aadhaar Password SURESH KUMAR, born 1990 SURE1990 SAI KUMAR (space skipped) SAIK1990 P. KUMAR (dot counts) P.KU1990 RIA (shorter name) RIA1990 -
Ordering a PVC card from a non-registered mobile without checking
What happens: with a non-registered mobile, no preview is shown, so you can't check your details. In our experience a card with wrong details happens sometimes.
Avoid or fix: if you can, update your mobile first, download e-Aadhaar and check every detail. Then order the PVC card (₹75).
-
Enrolling again because you lost your Aadhaar
What happens: UIDAI rejects a second enrolment unless it advises otherwise. Don't re-apply if your first enrolment may already have produced an Aadhaar.
Avoid or fix: use the free Retrieve EID / UID service. With no mobile or email registered, go to an Aadhaar centre.
-
Calling 1947 to get your Aadhaar number
What happens: in our experience the helpline does not give out your EID or Aadhaar number on the phone. Callers are sent to an Aadhaar centre.
Avoid or fix: use Retrieve EID / UID online, or visit a centre.
Which mobile and OTP mistakes cause trouble?
-
Expecting the app mobile update to work first time
What happens: in our experience the Aadhaar App mobile update works in roughly half the cases. The most common failure is the face scan.
Avoid or fix: do the face scan in good light. If it keeps failing, go to a centre. In our experience a centre updates it the same day for ₹75, with no document needed.
-
Thinking a new Aadhaar mobile also changes your bank number
What happens: in our experience nothing changes at the bank. Bank OTPs and UPI keep going to the number registered with the bank.
Avoid or fix: update your mobile number at the bank separately.
-
Waiting until you urgently need e-Aadhaar to fix a missing mobile
What happens: without a registered mobile, e-Aadhaar cannot be downloaded.
Avoid or fix: add your mobile at a centre now. In our experience OTPs usually start on the new number within 1–2 days (UIDAI allows up to 30 days). Need a copy today? A centre can give a biometric-authenticated print for ₹30–₹40.
Which security mistakes put your Aadhaar at risk?
-
Locking your Aadhaar (UID) without saving your VID
What happens: unlocking needs your latest 16-digit Virtual ID (VID). While the UID is locked, no Aadhaar authentication or bank e-KYC works. In our experience unlocking can be very hard because UIDAI's servers are often down.
Avoid or fix: create or note your VID before you lock. Forgot it? Get it by SMS (helper below). For everyday protection, a biometric lock is usually the safer choice.
-
Telling an OTP to a caller, or tapping "update from home" links
What happens: these are scams our customers have run into. The fraudster gets what they need to misuse your Aadhaar.
Avoid or fix: hang up, and don't tap the link. Use only websites ending in uidai.gov.in and UIDAI's Aadhaar App.
-
Handing out full photocopies
What happens: your full Aadhaar number can be reused, for example in fingerprint (AePS) fraud. In our experience some places, such as hotels, still take photocopies, while others scan the QR code.
Avoid or fix: give a masked Aadhaar, which shows only the last 4 digits. In our experience it is accepted almost everywhere except the passport office.
Send these SMS to 1947 from your registered mobile. GVID plus the last 4 digits of your Aadhaar creates a new VID; RVID sends your current one. To unlock, first send GETOTP plus the last 6 digits of your VID, then UNLOCKUID with the same digits and the OTP. All formats: SMS command generator (1947).
New VID: GVID 1234. Current VID: RVID 1234 (last 4 digits of Aadhaar). Unlock: GETOTP 123456, then UNLOCKUID 123456 654321 (last 6 digits of your VID, then the OTP). Send each to 1947.
This works only on your phone. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Never type your full Aadhaar number into any website except uidai.gov.in.
UIDAI's own example: Aadhaar 9876-5432-1987 → GVID 1987; VID ending 876543 → GETOTP 876543, then UNLOCKUID 876543 012345. No reply to your SMS? Contact your mobile operator.
Your update was rejected or got stuck. What do you do?
| Your situation | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Rejected because the document wasn't clear | Blurred or cropped scan, or not a colour scan | Rescan in colour with all four corners showing, then apply again |
| Rejected because the address didn't match | Typed in different words or order, or a wrong PIN | Type it exactly as on the proof (see the address mistakes) |
| Bill refused | Older than 3 months, or in the landlord's name | A recent bill in your or your family's name, or a notarised rent agreement |
| Centre refused the copy on your phone | DigiLocker copies aren't accepted at the centre | Bring the original, or a printout with a valid digital signature |
| Rejected because the name differs | Your name, or your father's or husband's name, differs between documents | Correct the document first (how) |
| Name or date-of-birth change refused because you've used your chances | Lifetime limit reached | Apply at a centre, then email or post your update slip and proofs to the UIDAI Regional Office, or call 1947. There is no fixed timeline |
| Head of Family request closed | Not approved within 30 days | Apply again (a new fee) and tell the HoF first |
| e-Aadhaar PDF won't open | Password typed wrong | First 4 letters in CAPITALS + year of birth (examples) |
| App mobile update fails at the face scan | The most common app failure we see | Update at a centre: same day, ₹75 |
| Bank OTPs still go to the old number | The bank keeps its own record | Update the number at your bank |
| You can't unlock your Aadhaar online | Site down, or you don't have the latest VID | Get the VID with RVID, then unlock by SMS (helper) |
| Centre asked for more than ₹75 / ₹125 | Overcharging | Complain on 1947 or [email protected] |
| Update still not done after 30 days | The reason varies | Call 1947 with the number on your slip or your SRN; see Update status and rejection fixes |
Mistakes that hit NRIs hardest
- Letting the registered Indian SIM lapse. OTPs for downloads and online updates go to that number. NRIs without a working Indian SIM often can't get them.
- Planning a biometric update from abroad. Photo, fingerprint and iris updates need a visit to India; there is no embassy or online route.
- Bringing the wrong identity proof to enrol. NRIs can use only a valid Indian passport as identity proof, and email is mandatory.
Region not right?
Scams and traps to avoid
- SMS or WhatsApp links promising "update your Aadhaar mobile from home". Don't tap them.
- Calls saying "your Aadhaar will be blocked" that ask for an OTP or your Aadhaar number. Hang up.
- Requests to install a screen-sharing (AnyDesk-type) app or an "Aadhaar app" from a link. Get UIDAI's Aadhaar App only from the Play Store or App Store.
- Fake rent agreements or certificates. Don't use them: in one reported case (Bengaluru, Nov 2024), a DTP centre was caught creating Aadhaar with fake rent agreements.
- Fees above ₹75 / ₹125. Complain about overcharging on 1947.
Frequently asked questions
Why was my Aadhaar address update rejected?
In our experience the main reasons are a blurred or cropped document, an address typed differently from the document, and a wrong or invalid document. Fix the cause and apply again.
Can I use my father's electricity bill as address proof?
In our experience, yes: a bill in your father's or family's name is accepted if it is at most 3 months old. A landlord's bill is not.
Is a DigiLocker copy accepted at the Aadhaar centre?
In our experience, no. Centres want physical originals. A printout of an e-document works only if it shows a valid digital signature.
How many times can I change my name or date of birth?
Name twice and date of birth once in a lifetime; gender also once. After that you need the exception route through UIDAI's Regional Office.
The operator typed my name wrong. Does that use up a chance?
No. UIDAI says operator typos, transliteration errors and regional-language changes don't count against the limit. Check the screen before you give your fingerprint, so it doesn't happen.
Can I download e-Aadhaar with just my name and date of birth?
No, that's a myth. You need your Aadhaar number, EID or VID and an OTP on the registered mobile, or a visit to a centre.
Why won't my e-Aadhaar PDF open?
The password is usually typed wrong. Use the first 4 letters of your English name in CAPITALS plus your year of birth, for example SURE1990.
Will changing my Aadhaar mobile change my bank mobile?
In our experience, no. Bank OTPs and UPI keep using the number registered with the bank. Update it at the bank separately.
I lost my Aadhaar. Should I enrol again?
No. A second enrolment is rejected. Use Retrieve EID / UID with your name and registered mobile or email, or visit a centre.
Will my Aadhaar be cancelled if I skip the 10-year document update?
No, it isn't deactivated. But in our experience some services and KYC can get stuck, so refresh your documents. It's free on myAadhaar until 14 June 2027.
Will the 1947 helpline tell me my Aadhaar number?
In our experience, no. Callers are sent to an Aadhaar centre. Use Retrieve EID / UID online instead.
Bottom line
Most Aadhaar mistakes come down to three things: the wrong document, details that don't match, and rushing a change you can make only once or twice. Check at home first, carry originals and read the operator's screen. For help, UIDAI's free helpline is 1947.
