How Do You Verify an Aadhaar (Aadhar) and Spot a Fake One?

Type the 12-digit number on UIDAI's Check Aadhaar Status page to see whether it is valid and active. To check the card and the person, scan its secure QR code with the Aadhaar App and match the photo and details. For an e-Aadhaar PDF, validate UIDAI's digital signature. Signed offline e-KYC XML files can be checked too.

How do you check whether an Aadhaar number is valid?

UIDAI's Check Aadhaar Status page is on myaadhaarbeta.uidai.gov.in. Its heading says it checks "if an Aadhaar number is active and truly belongs to the person you're verifying". The page shows whether the number is valid and active (not deactivated or omitted). It may also show the age band, gender, state and the last 4 digits of the registered mobile.

Check an Aadhaar number, step by step
  1. Open Check Aadhaar Status on myaadhaarbeta.uidai.gov.in
  2. Enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number and the captcha
  3. Click Validate Aadhaar Number
  4. Does it say the number is valid and active? No: don't accept it yet. The holder should check why (deactivated Aadhaar)
  5. Do the age band, gender and state fit the person? No: ask questions, and scan the QR code
  6. Number is real and active. Now check the person with the QR
  1. Open the Check Aadhaar Status page

Use only UIDAI's own site. No login and no OTP are needed for this check.

  2. Enter the number and the captcha

Type the 12-digit Aadhaar number, then the captcha, and click Validate Aadhaar Number.

  3. Read the result carefully

See whether the number is valid and active. If the page shows the age band, gender, state or last 4 mobile digits, compare them with the card and the person.

You'll know it worked when the page confirms the number is valid and active.

A valid number is not proof of identity. Someone can know a real number that isn't theirs. Always check the QR too.

How do you scan the secure QR code on an Aadhaar?

Every check of a card or print should include the secure QR code. UIDAI says it can be read only with the Aadhaar App, the Aadhaar QR Scanner app or UIDAI's Windows QR reader, and it works offline. A normal camera or QR app can't show the real details.

The QR holds: the last 4 digits of the Aadhaar number, name, address, gender, date of birth, photo, and a masked mobile number and email.

Scan and match the secure QR
  1. Open the Aadhaar App, the Aadhaar QR Scanner app or UIDAI's Windows QR reader
  2. Scan the QR code on the card, letter, PVC card or printout
  3. Does the app read the QR and show details? No: treat the paper as unverified; ask for an e-Aadhaar PDF or check the number
  4. Do the photo, name, date of birth and last 4 digits match the paper and the person? No: don't accept it; it may be fake or edited. See red flags
  5. Details match: the card checks out
  • Compare the photo with the face of the person in front of you. That is the check a status page can't do.
  • A PVC card has no hologram since 17 Oct 2025. A missing hologram is not a sign of a fake; the QR is what counts.
  • More about the app: the new Aadhaar App.

How do you check an offline e-KYC XML file?

Offline e-KYC is a file the Aadhaar holder downloads from UIDAI and shares. It is digitally signed by UIDAI. It holds the name, address, photo, gender, date of birth, a hash (a scrambled code) of the mobile number and email, and a reference ID.

Offline e-KYC XML, from holder to checker
  1. The holder downloads the offline e-KYC file from UIDAI's official page
  2. The holder gives you the file directly
  3. Open Check Aadhaar Status and choose the e-KYC XML upload option
  4. Does UIDAI's check accept the file? No: the file may be changed or not from UIDAI; don't accept it
  5. Match the photo and details with the person
  • Holders: get the file only from UIDAI's own offline e-KYC page, and share it only with someone you trust.
  • Checkers: because the file is signed, any change to the details breaks the signature.

How do you check the digital signature on an e-Aadhaar PDF?

An e-Aadhaar PDF is password-protected and digitally signed by UIDAI. It is as valid as the physical card. The signature is issued by "(n)Code Solutions CA 2014". If someone changes even one detail in the file, the signature stops being valid.

Check an e-Aadhaar PDF
  1. Open the PDF in Adobe Reader
  2. Enter the password: first 4 letters of the name in CAPITALS + year of birth
  3. Open the signature details and check the signer: (n)Code Solutions CA 2014
  4. After validating, does it show a green tick ("valid")?No: follow the full validation steps. Still not valid? Don't accept the file
  5. Scan the QR code in the PDF as well
  6. Signature valid and QR matches: the file is genuine
  1. Open the file in Adobe Reader

Password example: SURESH KUMAR, born 1990 → SURE1990. Unsure of the password? Use our PDF password helper.

  2. Validate UIDAI's signature

Validate UIDAI's signature in Adobe Reader. Our download guide has the full validation steps.

You'll know it worked when the signature shows as valid with a green tick.

  3. Scan the QR too

A valid signature proves the file is UIDAI's. The QR and the photo help you check that it belongs to the person in front of you.

Which copy to use where: e-Aadhaar vs PVC vs masked Aadhaar.

What should hotels, shops and offices do?

Instead of keeping photocopies, businesses can register as offline verification entities (OVSE) at ovse.uidai.gov.in and verify customers through the app. In December 2025, UIDAI was reported as saying that storing photocopies violates the Aadhaar Act, and hotels and similar businesses are expected to register. More than 100 entities had registered by April 2026, according to reports.

Verifying customers without photocopies
  1. Register your business as an OVSE at ovse.uidai.gov.in
  2. Ask the customer to show the Aadhaar QR
  3. Scan it with the app
  4. Do the photo and details match the customer? No: don't accept it; ask for another ID. See red flags
  5. Verified. No photocopy kept
  • Don't store photocopies or a customer's VID. UIDAI says agencies must not store the VID.
  • Need OTP or fingerprint checks? That is Aadhaar authentication, which has its own rules. Private entities need MeitY approval under the 2025 rules. See OTP, face and biometric authentication.
  • Checking a customer's PAN as well? That is a separate check; see our guide to verifying a PAN.

What are the red flags of a fake Aadhaar?

Fake e-Aadhaar copies, including AI-generated ones, have been reported in the news. A fake can look perfect, so check the data, not the design.

Red flagWhat it may meanWhat to do
UIDAI's apps can't read the QR codeThe QR is fake, damaged or copied badlyDon't rely on the paper; ask for an e-Aadhaar PDF and check the number
QR photo or details differ from the printed cardThe print was editedDon't accept it
QR photo doesn't match the personSomeone is using another person's AadhaarDon't accept it; ask for another ID
The status page says the number isn't valid or activeFake number, or a deactivated AadhaarDon't accept it until the holder sorts it out
e-Aadhaar PDF signature is not valid after validatingThe file was changed after downloadAsk the holder to download a fresh copy
Only a photocopy, nothing to scanCan't be checkedAsk for the card, PDF or QR
Someone asks for your OTP "to verify" AadhaarA scamNever share an OTP; none of these checks needs one from you

Not red flags: a PVC card without a hologram (none since 17 Oct 2025), and a masked e-Aadhaar that shows only the last 4 digits. Both are normal.

Using someone else's identity is impersonation under the Aadhaar Act, with a penalty of up to 3 years in jail. More warning signs: Aadhaar fraud and scams.

If your own details are wrong or your Aadhaar is not active, an Aadhaar centre or UIDAI's Regional Office can help, depending on the reason. Aadhaar Seva Kendras usually open on Sundays too; check your centre's hours before you go.

Living outside India?

Verifying an Aadhaar from abroad

  • The Check Aadhaar Status page needs only the 12-digit number and a captcha. No OTP or Indian mobile is needed.
  • The secure QR works offline. UIDAI's Windows QR reader runs on a computer.
  • To download your own e-Aadhaar for someone to check, you need an OTP on your registered Indian mobile. A non-Indian mobile number gets no SMS from UIDAI.
  • A PVC card is sent by Speed Post to the address on your Aadhaar. See Order an Aadhaar PVC card.

Warning

Fake Aadhaar and "verification" scams

  • Never share an OTP with a caller, even one who says they are from UIDAI or a bank and only want to "verify" your Aadhaar.
  • Check Aadhaar only on uidai.gov.in sites or in UIDAI's apps. Ignore links sent by SMS or WhatsApp.
  • When you share your Aadhaar, give a masked Aadhaar (last 4 digits only) where the full number isn't needed. See masked Aadhaar.
  • Lock your biometrics if you worry about misuse: lock Aadhaar and biometrics.
  • Never buy or make a fake Aadhaar. A cyber café owner in Bareilly was reportedly arrested for forging Aadhaar cards (Aug 2025). Money lost? Call 1930 or use cybercrime.gov.in at once.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check if an Aadhaar number is real?

Enter it with the captcha on UIDAI's Check Aadhaar Status page and click Validate Aadhaar Number. It tells you whether the number is valid and active.

Can I find someone's name from their Aadhaar number?

Not from the status check. It shows whether the number is valid and active, and may show the age band, gender, state and last 4 digits of the registered mobile. The name and photo are in the QR code on the card.

Which app can read the QR code on Aadhaar?

UIDAI says only the Aadhaar App, the Aadhaar QR Scanner app or UIDAI's Windows QR reader can read the secure QR.

Do I need internet to scan the Aadhaar QR?

No. UIDAI says the secure QR works offline.

Is a PVC Aadhaar card without a hologram fake?

No. UIDAI has issued PVC cards without a hologram since 17 October 2025. Scan the QR code to check it.

How do I know an e-Aadhaar PDF is genuine?

Open it in Adobe Reader and validate UIDAI's digital signature (signer: (n)Code Solutions CA 2014). Then scan its QR code and match the photo.

What is offline e-KYC XML?

A file the holder downloads from UIDAI. It is digitally signed and holds the name, address, photo, gender, date of birth, a hash of the mobile and email, and a reference ID.

Can a hotel keep a photocopy of my Aadhaar?

UIDAI was reported in December 2025 as saying that storing photocopies violates the Aadhaar Act; hotels are expected to verify through the app. In our experience some still take copies, so give a masked Aadhaar.

Someone wants my OTP to verify my Aadhaar. Should I give it?

No. Never share an OTP with a caller. The status check and the QR scan need no OTP from you.

Does verifying an Aadhaar prove citizenship?

No. Aadhaar proves identity only, not citizenship. More on the legal position: Is Aadhaar mandatory?

Bottom line

Check the number on UIDAI's status page, then scan the secure QR and match the photo with the person. For a PDF, validate the signature. Don't trust a photocopy alone. For help, UIDAI's free helpline is 1947.
