When Is My Child's Aadhaar (Aadhar) Biometric Update Due? (Calculator)

A child's Aadhaar needs two biometric updates: the first at age 5 and the second at age 15. Both are free until the child turns 7 and 17. Between 7 and 15 the update is also free until 30 Sep 2027; otherwise it costs ₹125. Enter your child's date of birth below to see the exact dates.

When is your child's biometric update due?

Enter your child's date of birth. The calculator shows which age band applies today, the fee today and, if an update is still ahead, its due date and free window (from the 5th to the 7th birthday, or from the 15th to the 17th).

Child's age todayWhat's dueFee today
Under 5Nothing yet. The Aadhaar has a photo only; the first update is due at 5—
5 or 6 (until the 7th birthday)First update: photo, fingerprints, irisFree
7 to 14 (until the 15th birthday)First update, if it was missed. Otherwise nothing until 15Free till 30 Sep 2027, then ₹125
15 or 16 (until the 17th birthday)Second update: photo, fingerprints, iris againFree
17 or olderAny update that was missed₹125

Works only on your device. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Never type an Aadhaar number here.

The calculator counts each age band up to the later birthday: a child who is 5 or 6 gets the free first update, and a child who is 15 or 16 gets the free second update. UIDAI's fee chart only says "5–7" and "15–17", so if the visit falls on the exact 7th or 17th birthday (or the 15th birthday after September 2027), confirm the fee at the centre before the update starts. For every other Aadhaar fee, try our fee calculator.

What is due at each age, and what does it cost?

UIDAI calls these the mandatory biometric updates (MBU). The fees come from UIDAI's fee chart, its Aadhaar Seva Kendra page and the 2026 enrolment and update forms.

Age 0–5Photo onlyNo fingerprints or iris yet. Nothing to update.
Age 5First update duePhoto, fingerprints and iris. Free until 7.
Age 7–15Missed the first?Free until 30 Sep 2027, then ₹125.
Age 15Second update dueBiometrics captured again. Free until 17.
After 17Normal feeA missed update costs ₹125.
  • Under 5: a Baal Aadhaar holds only the child's photo. Fingerprints and iris are taken from age 5. If the photo needs changing before then, a photo-only update costs ₹125 in our counter team's experience (UIDAI's fee box lists no separate fee for it).
  • First update at 5: the child's photo, fingerprints and iris are captured. It is free once between 5 and 7.
  • Second update at 15: the biometrics are captured again. It is free once between 15 and 17.
  • Between 7 and 15: a missed first update is free until 30 Sep 2027. UIDAI's Aadhaar Seva Kendra page (last reviewed 9 Oct 2026) and the 2026 forms say "till 30.9.2027"; news reports describe this as a one-year extension of the earlier 30 Sep 2026 date.
  • Otherwise: a biometric update costs ₹125.

UIDAI says an MBU must be a stand-alone transaction, while the 2026 forms say written (demographic) changes are free when done with a biometric update. We haven't confirmed how centres apply this to a child's free update, so ask before you add an address or mobile change.

Full guide: Child biometric update (5 & 15).

What should you carry for the child's update?

  • The child. The photo, fingerprints and iris are captured on the spot, so the child must be there in person.
  • The child's Aadhaar number: the update form asks for it, so carry the letter, an e-Aadhaar print or the PVC card.
  • A parent or legal guardian, if you can. UIDAI's 2026 forms for children are signed by the mother, father or a legal guardian. We suggest one of them goes with the child; if someone else will take the child, ask the centre first.

Where can you get the child's update done?

Photo, fingerprint and iris updates can't be done online, on myAadhaar or in the Aadhaar App.

WhereKeep in mind
Aadhaar centre: Aadhaar Seva Kendra, bank or post office Aadhaar centre, or a CSC running an authorised Aadhaar centreAt Aadhaar Seva Kendras, booking a slot is free, works with any mobile number and allows two appointments a month. In our experience, centres not listed for online booking take walk-ins only
School campNews reports say a school MBU drive began in September 2025 and completed over 2 crore updates in 1.56 lakh schools by August 2026. Ask the school if a camp is planned
India Post doorstep service (IPPB)Our team's experience is that the doorstep service covers child MBU. But IPPB's own page doesn't list it: it lists only mobile update (at selected post offices) and child enrolment below 5 (at a few selected post offices). In our experience the postman can come late or not at all (this can vary). Ask at your post office, and keep a centre as a back-up
Normal CSC or cyber caféNot possible. In our experience they can download, print and order PVC cards, but can't do updates

What happens if the child's update is missed?

  • The Aadhaar may be deactivated. A missed child MBU is one of the deactivation reasons in UIDAI's rules. UIDAI is reported to send SMS reminders.
  • Exams and scholarships can get stuck. Families report that a missed update blocked NEET, JEE or CUET registration and scholarship applications.
  • It may cost money. At 7–15 it is free until 30 Sep 2027, then ₹125; from 17 it costs ₹125.

How strict is the timing? The 2016 regulations as printed in UIDAI's 2021 handbook say a child who doesn't do the update within 2 years of turning 5 or 15 is deactivated, and that the number is omitted if it is still not done 1 year after deactivation. That handbook is old, so check the current rules; today's sources say only "may be deactivated".

The fix is the same in every case: take the child to an Aadhaar centre and do the biometric update. If the Aadhaar is already deactivated, see Aadhaar deactivated: missed child update.

What changes for children born on or after 1 Oct 2023?

For these children, a birth certificate is mandatory, and it is the only proof of date of birth UIDAI's 2026 forms accept. The biometric updates at 5 and 15 work the same way. If the date of birth ever needs fixing, start with the birth certificate.

How do you do the child's update?

Do the child's update

Child's biometric update for NRI families

  • A biometric update needs a visit to India. It can't be done online.
  • Use the calculator to plan the trip inside a free window (5–7 or 15–17), and book a free slot before you travel.
  • Carry the child's Aadhaar. Checking the status from abroad works with the number on the slip.
  • A non-Indian mobile number gets no SMS from UIDAI, so OTP-based services need the registered Indian mobile.

Warning

Child Aadhaar update scams

  • Ignore SMS or WhatsApp links offering a child's update "from home". Fingerprints and iris can't be captured online.
  • Never share an OTP or Aadhaar number with a caller who says your child's Aadhaar "will be blocked". Hang up.
  • Don't install screen-sharing apps on a stranger's request.
  • Booking is free, and the update is free at 5–7, 15–17 and (till 30 Sep 2027) 7–15. Anyone charging more is overcharging; complain on 1947.

Frequently asked questions

At what age is a child's Aadhaar biometric update due?

Twice: at age 5 and at age 15. Under 5, a Baal Aadhaar holds only a photo, so fingerprints and iris are added at 5.

Is the child biometric update free in 2026?

Yes, at 5–7 and 15–17. Between 7 and 15 it is also free until 30 Sep 2027. Otherwise a biometric update costs ₹125.

My child is 10 and missed the update at 5. What now?

Do it now at an Aadhaar centre. It is free until 30 Sep 2027, and if the update isn't done the Aadhaar may be deactivated.

My child is 16 and never had the first update. Which one is due?

The child is in the free 15–17 window, so go to a centre now and ask for the mandatory biometric update. It is free until the child turns 17.

Can I do it online or in the Aadhaar App?

No. Photo, fingerprint and iris updates need the child in person at an Aadhaar centre or a school camp.

What happens if the update isn't done?

The Aadhaar may be deactivated. Families also report blocked NEET, JEE or CUET registration and scholarship forms.

Does the calculator save my child's date of birth?

No. It runs only in your browser, doesn't store the date and never asks for an Aadhaar number.

Bottom line

Mark two birthdays: 5 and 15. The update is free until 7 and 17, and a missed first update is free at 7–15 until 30 Sep 2027. Take the child and the child's Aadhaar to a centre, keep the slip and check the status. For help, UIDAI's free helpline is 1947.
