How to Check Aadhaar (Aadhar) Update Status and Fix a Rejection?
Open UIDAI's Check Enrolment or Update Status page on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and enter the number on your centre slip, or your SRN for online, app or Head of Family requests. UIDAI says app updates can take up to 30 days; in our experience most updates finish in about a week. If it is rejected, fix the cause and apply again, or escalate through 1947.

Which number do you have: URN, SRN or enrolment number?
Every update request gets a number, and you need it to check the status and to complain. UIDAI's status page has a separate option for each type, so simply pick the one that matches the number you have.
| Number | Full name | Where you get it | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enrolment No. / EID | Enrolment ID | Printed on the acknowledgement slip from an enrolment or update centre | 14-digit enrolment number, or 28-digit EID |
| URN | Update Request Number | Printed on an update acknowledgement slip; UIDAI's status page links its URN option to requests made in the old mAadhaar app | 8 digits |
| SRN | Service Request Number | Shown after you pay online on myAadhaar, in the Aadhaar App, or for a Head of Family (HoF) request | 'S' followed by 13 digits; note it down or take a screenshot |
Applying for a new Aadhaar, not an update? Your slip has a 28-digit EID (enrolment ID); the same status page accepts it. See enrolment status & not received. Every Aadhaar number type is explained in our Aadhaar glossary (EID, URN, VID).
How do you check your Aadhaar update status?
- Do you have your slip number or SRN?No: find it in Update History
- Open Check Enrolment or Update Status on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
- Pick the option for your number (Enrolment No./EID, SRN, URN or SID) and enter it
- Does it say the request is still "in progress"?No, rejected: see why and how to fix it
- Is it within 30 days of applying? No: start the escalation ladder
- Wait and check again; most finish in about a week
-
Find your number
Look at the centre's acknowledgement slip, or your payment screen or screenshot (SRN). No number? See Update History.
-
Open Check Enrolment or Update Status
Use UIDAI's official link below. Type the address yourself or use our button; don't open status links sent on WhatsApp.
-
Enter the number and read the status
Choose the option that matches your number, type it carefully, digit by digit, and fill in the captcha. The page tells you whether your request is still "in progress" or has been rejected.
You'll know it worked when the page shows your request and its current status.
If it says nothing is found, check each digit again. A fresh request can take a little time to appear; if it still doesn't show after 10 days, call 1947 with the number.
-
Act on the result
In progress: wait, up to 30 days. Rejected: note the reason, then use the fix table. Done: download the new e-Aadhaar.
Status labels may change on UIDAI's site. This page only uses the two we can confirm: "in progress" and rejected.
Lost your slip or SRN? How does Update History help?
UIDAI has an Update History service, still in beta. You log in with your Aadhaar number and an OTP on your registered mobile. It is reported to list your past updates with the URN, date and type of each one.
- Use it to recover a lost request number, then check the status with that number.
- It also shows whether an old update ever went through, which helps when you are not sure what was changed.
- No OTP on your registered mobile? You can't use it. Update your mobile first: see the mobile number update guide.
The details of Update History come from secondary sources. The menu name may differ slightly on myAadhaar.
How long does an Aadhaar update take?
UIDAI says updates in the Aadhaar App can take up to 30 days; we haven't seen a published time for other updates. Our counter usually sees results much sooner (this can vary):
| Update | UIDAI says | In our experience |
|---|---|---|
| Address (online or centre) | No time published (in the app: up to 30 days) | About 1 week until it shows on the downloadable e-Aadhaar; sometimes the full 30 days |
| Mobile number at a centre | No time published | Done the same day; OTPs usually start on the new number in 1–2 days |
| Mobile number in the Aadhaar App | Up to 30 days | Often 7–15 days |
| Head of Family address request | HoF must approve within 30 days | If the HoF doesn't approve in time, the request closes and the fee is lost |
| Name, DOB or gender past the lifetime limit | No timeline (Regional Office decides) | No fixed time; follow up regularly |
Why was your Aadhaar update rejected, and how do you fix it?
Find the reason that fits your case. The first four are the reasons UIDAI lists for online address updates. The rest come from UIDAI's rules and what our counter sees every day.
| Rejection reason | What it means | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Document not on the accepted list | The proof you uploaded isn't valid for this update (for example PAN, or a DigiLocker screenshot) | Choose a document from UIDAI's list for updates. See documents required, or test yours in the document checker. |
| Document not in your name | A landlord's or friend's bill, or someone else's document | Use a document in your own name. A bill in your father's or family's name is accepted. No proof at all? Try the Head of Family route. |
| Address doesn't match the document | You typed it differently: wrong PIN code, other words or order, parts repeated, landmark in the wrong field | Copy the address exactly as printed on the proof, word for word, with the same PIN code. |
| Not a clear colour scan | Blurred, cropped, dark or black-and-white upload | Rescan in colour with all four corners visible and no glare. |
| Document too old | Utility bill older than 3 months; UIDAI-format certificate older than 3 months | Get a fresh bill or a new certificate. In our experience both limits are strictly enforced. |
| Missing photo, stamp, signature or notary | In our experience these get rejected: a bank passbook without photo or bank stamp, a rent agreement without a notary stamp (UIDAI's list itself accepts unregistered agreements), an unsigned certificate | Get the passbook photo-stamped by the bank, or have the rent agreement notarised. |
| Certificate in the wrong format | A gazetted officer, MLA or Tehsildar letter not on UIDAI's format | Use UIDAI's certificate format, signed and stamped, with a cross-signed photo and no overwriting. |
| Name or spelling differs | Your name on the proof doesn't match your Aadhaar, or differs between two documents (for example Mohd vs Mohammad) | Small differences are sometimes accepted, sometimes not. Use a document with the exact same spelling, or correct the name first: see name change. |
| Father's or husband's name differs | The relative's name is not the same on your two documents | In our experience this is always rejected. Use documents that agree, or correct one of them first. |
| Head of Family request closed | The HoF didn't approve within 30 days, or rejected it | The request closes by itself and the fee is not refunded. Tell the HoF first, then apply again. |
| Wrong proof for a date-of-birth change | Under 18 with a declared DOB: only a birth certificate works. DOB verified from a birth certificate: only a corrected certificate with the same registration number, plus an affidavit | Check which document fits your case in our DOB change guide before you apply again. |
| Lifetime limit reached | Name already changed twice, or gender or DOB once | A centre can't fix this. Use the Regional Office exception route. |
| "Not found at address" after field verification | Someone checked your address and couldn't find you. Reported in 2024: about 53% of applications were rejected in Chandigarh, mostly for this reason | Apply only with the address where you really live and can be found. If you were wrongly marked, complain with your URN or SRN (see escalation). |
An operator's typing mistake, a transliteration error or a regional-language fix does not count against your lifetime limit.
What should you do after a rejection?
- Note the rejection reason and your URN or SRN
- Is the field still within its lifetime limit? No: use the Regional Office route
- Do you agree with the reason? No: complain with your URN or SRN
- Fix the cause: a better scan, the right document or exact typing
- Apply again and pay the fee again; save the new number
- Track the new request
-
Write down the reason and the number
Take a screenshot of the status page. You will need the URN or SRN if you complain.
-
Check the lifetime limit
Address, mobile and email have no lifetime limit. Name can change twice, and gender and DOB once each. If that limit is used up, a new application at a centre won't go through by itself; follow the exception route.
-
Fix the cause before you reapply
Match the reason in the table above. Don't send the same document again unchanged; it will usually be rejected for the same reason.
-
Apply again and keep the new number
A new request is a new fee: ₹75 for a demographic update, ₹125 for a biometric one. A child's biometric update is free at 5–7 and 15–17, and at 7–15 until 30 Sep 2027 (see child biometric update). Save the new number.
You'll know it worked when the new number shows "in progress" on the status page.
What if you've used up your name, DOB or gender limit?
UIDAI's lifetime limits are: name twice, gender once, date of birth once. Once you've used them, the request goes through an exception route. There is no fixed timeline for it.
- Apply at an Aadhaar centre; registrars must accept the request
- Keep the URN slip and copies of your proofs
- Email or post the URN slip and proofs to your Regional Office, or call 1947
- Does the Regional Office accept your proof? No: escalate further
- The Tech Centre reprocesses your update
-
Apply at an Aadhaar centre anyway
The centre must take your request even though the limit is used. You get a URN slip.
-
Send the URN slip and proofs to the Regional Office
Email or post them to the Regional Office for your state, or call 1947. UIDAI's Regional Offices are in Bengaluru, Chandigarh, New Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Mumbai and Ranchi.
-
Wait for verification and follow up
The Regional Office checks your case and the Tech Centre in Bengaluru reprocesses it. Follow up regularly, as there is no deadline.
| Field | What UIDAI accepts for an exception |
|---|---|
| Name (both chances used) | Marriage, divorce or adoption certificate; initials or reordering of the name; a Gazette notification for a complete change |
| Gender | A medical certificate from a surgeon, or a government transgender certificate. If an operator wrongly changed your gender, the count resets to 0 |
| Date of birth | DOB can change only once, whatever its status. See the documents for your case in our DOB guide |
Some people have had to go to court when the limit blocked a genuine correction. For example, a High Court ordered a Regional Office in 2026 to fix a DOB within 10 days (news report). Most cases don't need that; start with the steps above.
How do you escalate a stuck or wrongly rejected update?
UIDAI's Citizen's Charter sets 30 days to resolve a grievance. Give each step that long before you move to the next one. Always quote your URN or SRN.
- Call 1947 with your URN or SRN; note any ticket number
- File a complaint on myAadhaar (file-complaint)
- Email [email protected] with the URN, dates and screenshots
- Solved within 30 days? No: write to your Regional Office
- Still stuck? File on CPGRAMS (pgportal.gov.in)
- Last step: an RTI to UIDAI on rtionline.gov.in
- RTI reply due within 30 days
| Step | Where | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Helpline | 1947 (toll-free) | Automated line 24x7. Agents Mon–Sat 7am–11pm, Sun 8am–5pm; closed 26 Jan, 15 Aug and 2 Oct. 12 languages, including Hindi and English. More: UIDAI helpline 1947 |
| 2. Online complaint | myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/file-complaint | Gives you a written record. Keep the complaint number |
| 3. Email | [email protected] | Mention the URN or SRN, the date you applied, the reason shown and earlier ticket numbers. Never send your OTP |
| 4. Regional Office | Bengaluru, Chandigarh, New Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Mumbai, Ranchi | Write to the office for your state. This is also the route for limit exceptions and wrong deactivations |
| 5. CPGRAMS | pgportal.gov.in | The central government's public grievance portal. Attach your earlier complaint details |
| 6. RTI | rtionline.gov.in → UIDAI | Ask for the status of your request number and the reason for delay or rejection. Fee ₹10 (BPL applicants exempt). Reply due within 30 days |
Some people's status stayed "in progress" for 90 days or more, and their 1947 tickets went nowhere. They report turning to RTI. A clear written trail from steps 2 and 3 makes the later steps stronger. More detail: our complaint and escalation guide.
Your situation: what happens and what should you do?
| Your situation | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "In progress", less than 30 days | Normal processing | Wait. Allow up to 30 days (UIDAI's figure for app updates); address changes often show in about a week |
| "In progress" for more than 30 days | Held for checks, or stuck | Call 1947 with your URN or SRN, then file an online complaint |
| "In progress" for 90+ days | Others report tickets being ignored at this stage | Move up the ladder: Regional Office, CPGRAMS, then RTI |
| Slip number doesn't show for 10+ days | The request may not have reached UIDAI properly | Check the digits, then call 1947 with the slip. Ask the centre to check too |
| Lost the slip or SRN | You can't check the status without it | Log in to myAadhaar with OTP and open Update History |
| Rejected with a reason | Nothing on your Aadhaar changed | Fix the cause (table) and apply again with a new fee |
| Rejected, and you think it's wrong | Reapplying with the same papers often fails again | Complain with your URN or SRN and proofs (ladder) |
| HoF request expired | Closed automatically after 30 days; fee not refunded | Tell the HoF, then apply again |
| Limit used up (name, DOB, gender) | A normal update won't go through | Use the Regional Office exception route |
| Mobile updated, but OTPs still go to the old number | Still processing | Wait 1–2 days (centre) or 7–15 days (app) in our experience; UIDAI says up to 30 days for app updates |
| Update done, but e-Aadhaar shows old details | The change hasn't reached the download yet | Wait a few more days, then download it again |
| "Not found at address" after verification | The address check failed | Reapply with your real, current address; complain if you were there |
| Centre charged more than ₹75 / ₹125 | Overcharging | Complain on 1947 or by email with the centre's details and the operator ID if you have it |
When should you visit a centre or the Regional Office?
- Aadhaar centre: go when the online update keeps failing or no OTP reaches your registered mobile. Name, DOB, gender, photo and fingerprint changes also need a centre. Take original documents; in our experience centres don't accept DigiLocker copies on your phone.
- Regional Office: when your lifetime limit is used up, or when complaints through 1947, myAadhaar and email have not solved the problem in 30 days.
- Not a cyber café: in our experience a normal cyber café or CSC without an Aadhaar operator ID can't process updates. It can only download and print e-Aadhaar or order a PVC card.

Tracking an update from abroad
- Check Enrolment or Update Status works online from anywhere with the number on your slip or your SRN.
- Update History needs an OTP on your registered Indian mobile. Without a working Indian SIM you can't use it.
- For a limit exception you can email the URN slip and proofs to the Regional Office, and write to [email protected].
- A rejected biometric or name/DOB/gender update needs a new visit to a centre in India.
Region not right?
Status-check and "fast approval" scams
- Check status only on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Ignore SMS or WhatsApp links promising a status check or "approval from home".
- Nobody can speed up or reverse a rejection for money. Hang up on callers who say "your Aadhaar will be blocked" and ask for an OTP.
- Never install screen-sharing apps (AnyDesk-type) for someone "helping" with your update.
- The fees are ₹75 (demographic) and ₹125 (biometric). Report overcharging on 1947.
Frequently asked questions
How can I check my Aadhaar update status?
Open UIDAI's Check Enrolment or Update Status page on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in, choose the option for your number, and enter the number on your slip or your SRN. The page shows whether the request is in progress or rejected.
What is the difference between URN and SRN?
UIDAI's status page describes the URN as an 8-digit update request number; its URN option is for requests made in the old mAadhaar app. The SRN is 'S' followed by 13 digits, for online, app and Head of Family requests. With a centre slip, simply use the number printed on it.
I lost my URN slip. How do I find the number?
Log in to myAadhaar with an OTP and open Update History (beta). It is reported to list your past updates with URN, date and type.
How long does an Aadhaar update take?
UIDAI says app updates can take up to 30 days. In our experience an address change shows on e-Aadhaar in about a week, and a mobile update at a centre works within 1–2 days.
My status has said "in progress" for over a month. What now?
Call 1947 with your URN or SRN and file a complaint on myAadhaar. If nothing changes in 30 days, write to your Regional Office, then use CPGRAMS or RTI.
Can I apply again after a rejection?
Yes, but fix the cause first and expect to pay the fee again. If the rejection is for a used-up lifetime limit, reapplying alone won't help; use the Regional Office route.
Does a rejected update count towards my lifetime limit?
We haven't found a clear UIDAI rule on this. Operator typos, transliteration errors and regional-language fixes don't count against it. If you are unsure, check Update History or ask 1947 before you reapply.
Is the fee refunded if my Head of Family doesn't approve?
No. The request closes automatically after 30 days and the fee is not refunded. Tell your HoF before you apply.
Can a centre fix a rejection on the spot?
A centre can take a fresh request with the right documents. It can't override a lifetime limit; only the Regional Office route can.
Bottom line
Keep your slip or SRN, check it on UIDAI's status page, and allow up to 30 days. If it's rejected, fix the exact cause before you apply again. If it's stuck or wrong, climb the ladder one step at a time. UIDAI's free helpline is 1947.
