Which Aadhaar centre do you need?
Pick what you want done. The answer tells you which kind of centre can do it.
| What you need | Where to go |
|---|---|
| New Aadhaar, adult (18+) | Designated centre only, such as an Aadhaar Seva Kendra (free) |
| New Aadhaar, child | Any enrolment centre; IPPB at a few places for ages 0–5 (free) |
| Change name, address, DOB, mobile; photo or fingerprints | A centre that does updates (₹75 / ₹125) |
| e-Aadhaar print or PVC card, with OTP | Online yourself, or a normal CSC or cyber café |
| e-Aadhaar print, no OTP | Aadhaar centre, biometric print (₹30–₹40) |
| Person can't travel | Home service (full fee) or IPPB doorstep |
What can each type of Aadhaar centre do?
"Aadhaar centre" covers very different counters. Our counter team sees three levels of access: a CSC with an authorised Aadhaar centre can do all services; a counter with only an Aadhaar operator ID can do updates only; a normal CSC or village-level entrepreneur (VLE) can only order PVC cards, print and download e-Aadhaar.
| Service | Aadhaar Seva Kendra (designated) | CSC with authorised Aadhaar centre | Operator-ID counter | Normal CSC / VLE / cyber café | IPPB doorstep |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| New Aadhaar, adult | Yes | Only if designated (CSC state or district centre) | No | No | No |
| New Aadhaar, child | Yes | Yes | No | No | Ages 0–5, at a few places |
| Update name, DOB, gender, address, mobile, email | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | Mobile only (₹75, selected post offices) |
| Photo, fingerprint and iris update; child biometric update | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | Not on IPPB's list (our team has seen child updates) |
| Download and print e-Aadhaar, order PVC card (needs OTP) | Ask | Yes | Ask | Yes | No |
A biometric-authenticated e-Aadhaar print (₹30–₹40) is given at Aadhaar centres. Ask the counter before you queue. Twins with mixed-up biometrics can't be fixed at any centre; only the UIDAI Regional Office can do it.
Since 1 December 2022, UIDAI rejects adult enrolments made at centres that are not designated. If a centre says it can't enrol an adult, it is following the rule. Go to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or another designated centre. See Apply for a new Aadhaar.
How do you find a centre and book a slot?
- Search for centres near you on the Bhuvan Aadhaar locator
- Check the centre does the service you need
- Is the centre listed on bookappointment.uidai.gov.in?No: it's walk-in only. Go early, not at 1 pm
- Book a free slot
- Can you make it on that day?No: reschedule up to 24 hours before. A missed slot means booking again
- Arrive on time with your original documents
-
Search the official locator
Use UIDAI's Bhuvan Aadhaar portal, or the Aadhaar Seva Kendra list on uidai.gov.in. Note the centre's name and address.
-
Match the centre to your service
For a new adult Aadhaar, the centre must be designated. For updates, a normal CSC won't do. Check the table above.
-
Book a free slot if the centre is listed
Go to bookappointment.uidai.gov.in. Booking is free, you don't need the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar, and UIDAI allows up to 2 appointments a month. In our experience, centres listed there take online appointments; centres not listed are walk-in only. More help: Book an Aadhaar appointment.
You'll know it worked when you have a confirmed date and time for your chosen centre.
-
Reschedule in time if plans change
You can reschedule up to 24 hours before the slot. If you miss the slot, you have to book again.
What should you carry to the Aadhaar centre?
Tick these off before you leave home. Which proofs you need depends on the service; see Documents required for Aadhaar or check yours with the document checker.
- Original documents, not photocopies or phone copies. The operator scans them and hands them back.
- New adult Aadhaar: one proof of identity (PoI) with name and photo, one proof of address (PoA) and, if you have one, a date-of-birth (DoB) proof. Without a DoB proof, your date of birth is recorded as declared or approximate and only the year is printed on the card. PAN is not accepted as a proof.
- Child: the birth certificate (the only accepted DoB proof for children born on or after 1 Oct 2023) and the parents' Aadhaar numbers. One parent confirms with biometrics.
- Update: your Aadhaar number, plus the proof for the detail you're changing. A mobile number update needs no document.
- e-Documents (e-voter ID, e-ration card): a printout that shows a valid digital signature (green tick).
- A certificate in UIDAI's format, if you use one: issued within the last 3 months.
- Check that your name, date of birth and father's or husband's name match across all documents.
- The exact fee, and your appointment details if you booked.
What happens inside the Aadhaar centre?
UIDAI's Citizen's Charter sets a session of up to 20 minutes at the counter. Waiting in the queue is not included, and it can take much longer.
- Show your booking, or take a token and join the queue
- The operator enters your details or the change you want
- Your original documents are scanned and handed back
- Biometrics: photo, fingerprints and iris (under 5: photo only)
- Is everything on the screen correct? No: ask the operator to fix it before you finish
- Pay the fee (new enrolment is free)
- Keep the slip with your EID (new Aadhaar) or URN (update)
-
Check in or join the queue
Show your appointment if you have one. At walk-in centres, wait for your turn.
-
Tell the operator exactly what you need
The operator types in your details, or the update you asked for. Your name is entered exactly as written on your document.
-
Hand over your original documents
They are scanned and returned to you at once. Don't leave without them.
-
Give your biometrics
For a new Aadhaar (age 5+), the operator takes a photo, all 10 fingerprints and both irises. For a child under 5, only a photo. For a biometric update, they are captured again.
-
Check the screen before you finish
Read your name, date of birth, gender, address and mobile number. A mistake you spot now saves a paid update later.
-
Pay and keep the slip
Pay only the official fee. The slip shows your 28-digit enrolment ID (EID) for a new Aadhaar, or the request number for your update. Track the update with the number on your slip.
You'll know it worked when you have the slip. Photograph it and keep the paper safe; you need the number to check your status.
After a new enrolment, track it at Enrolment status. After an update, use Update status.
Which fees should you pay at an Aadhaar centre?
UIDAI says charges are the same at every centre. Our team confirms all centres charge the current rates. Old figures such as ₹100 for a photo or ₹50 for an address are out of date. Full list: Aadhaar fees & charges, or work out your total with the fee calculator.
| Service at a centre | Official fee | Note |
|---|---|---|
| New Aadhaar (any age) | ₹0 | Free everywhere |
| Appointment booking | ₹0 | On bookappointment.uidai.gov.in |
| Child biometric update at 5–7 and 15–17 | ₹0 | Must be done as a separate transaction. Find your child's due date |
| Child biometric update at 7–15 | ₹0 | Free until 30 Sep 2027, then ₹125 |
| Biometric update (photo, fingerprints, iris), any other age | ₹125 | Every age not covered by the free rows above |
| Name, gender, DOB, address, mobile or email update | ₹75 | Free if done together with a biometric update |
| Document (PoI / PoA) update | ₹75 | At a centre; free on myAadhaar until 14 Jun 2027 |
| Biometric-authenticated e-Aadhaar print | ₹30–₹40 | When you can't get an OTP |
| PVC card order | ₹75 | Includes GST and Speed Post |
How do you refuse overcharging?
People report being asked for ₹200 instead of ₹75. If an overcharge is proven, the operator is suspended and the registrar fined ₹50,000, according to a December 2023 news report of a Lok Sabha reply.
- State the official fee from the table
- Does the operator accept it?No: don't pay extra; note the operator ID, centre, date and time
- Keep your EID or URN slip
- Complain on 1947 or [email protected] if you were overcharged
-
Say the official fee out loud
Politely state the fee from the table above. Ask for a receipt for what you pay.
-
Note who served you
A complaint needs details. Ask for the operator's ID. Also write down the centre's name and address, the date and time, and keep your EID or URN slip.
-
Complain to UIDAI
Call 1947 or email [email protected] with these details. See Aadhaar complaint & escalation.
When are Aadhaar centres open?
UIDAI says Aadhaar Seva Kendras open 7 days a week, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, and close on holidays. Our team visited one centre on 15 October 2026. This is what we found there:
| Item | At the centre we visited |
|---|---|
| Days | Open all year, including Sundays |
| Holidays | Closed on about 10 a year, including 26 January, 15 August and 2 October |
| Morning | 9:30 am – 1:00 pm |
| Lunch break | 1:00 – 2:00 pm (no service) |
| Afternoon | 2:00 – 5:30 pm |
Bank, post office and CSC centres may keep different hours. Check your centre before you go. Queues can be long, sometimes in the heat, so go early or book a slot where you can.
What tips does our counter team have for a centre visit?
- Centres accept only physical originals. DigiLocker copies of e-DL or e-voter ID are not accepted. A printout of an e-document works if it shows a valid digital signature.
- Documents we see rejected most: a gazetted-officer certificate in the wrong format, an old bill or one in another person's name, a bank passbook without photo or stamp, and a rent agreement without notary.
- If your father's or husband's name differs between two documents, the application gets rejected.
- Lost your old mobile number? A centre can link a new number the same day, with no document, for ₹75. OTPs usually start arriving in 1–2 days.
- No registered mobile but need your Aadhaar now? Ask for a biometric-authenticated e-Aadhaar print (₹30–₹40).
- Certificates from a Gazetted officer, MLA or Tehsildar are valid for only 3 months, and officers often refuse to sign. Start early.
Can an elderly or disabled person get Aadhaar service at home?
- Home service: in our experience it can be arranged for eligible senior citizens, disabled people and some special cases. Prior permission from the UIDAI regional office may be needed.
- It isn't free: the full fee is charged, even for bedridden or disabled people.
- IPPB doorstep: IPPB lists mobile number update (₹75, at selected post offices) and free child enrolment at a few places. Our counter team has also seen postmen enrol children aged 0–5 and do child biometric updates at home, but IPPB does not list child biometric updates. In our experience booking is unreliable; the postman often doesn't come or comes late.
Step-by-step help: Elderly, disabled & bedridden and Aadhaar services at home (IPPB).
What can go wrong at a centre, and how do you fix it?
| Your situation | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Centre says it can't make an adult Aadhaar | It is not a designated centre | Go to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or another designated centre |
| Cyber café or CSC can't update your details | It has no Aadhaar centre authorisation | Use a centre that does updates (see table) |
| Asked to pay more than the fee | Overcharging | Refuse, note the operator ID and complain on 1947 (how) |
| Document refused at the counter | Phone copy, old bill, names don't match, or expired certificate | Bring originals with matching names (checklist) |
| Centre not on the booking site | It is walk-in only | Go early in the day |
| Missed your slot | The slot is gone | Book again; next time reschedule 24 hours before |
| Counter closed when you arrived | Lunch break or holiday | Avoid 1–2 pm; check holidays (timings) |
| Twins' biometrics mixed up | Centres can't fix this | Contact the UIDAI Regional Office |
Aadhaar centres for NRIs, OCI cardholders and foreigners
- There is no embassy or online route. You visit a centre in India.
- NRIs can enrol on arrival with a valid Indian passport; the 182-day stay rule doesn't apply. Email is compulsory.
- Biometric updates also need a visit to India.
- OCI cardholders and other foreigners who qualify enrol at Aadhaar Seva Kendras.
- More: Aadhaar for NRIs & OCI.

Centre and booking scams
- Booking a slot is free. Use only bookappointment.uidai.gov.in and the Bhuvan locator linked above.
- Ignore SMS or WhatsApp links offering Aadhaar updates "from home". Use only uidai.gov.in or UIDAI's Aadhaar App.
- Never share an Aadhaar OTP with a caller who says your Aadhaar "will be blocked".
- Never buy fake rent agreements or certificates. A cyber café owner was arrested in 2025 for forging Aadhaar cards (news report).
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the nearest Aadhaar centre?
Use UIDAI's Bhuvan Aadhaar locator at bhuvan-app3.nrsc.gov.in/aadhaar, or the Aadhaar Seva Kendra list on uidai.gov.in. Check that the centre offers the service you need.
Is an Aadhaar appointment free?
Yes. Booking at bookappointment.uidai.gov.in is free, and you don't need your Aadhaar-linked mobile to book. In our experience, only centres listed there take online bookings; others are walk-in.
Are Aadhaar centres open on Sunday?
Aadhaar Seva Kendras usually are. The one we visited is open all year, including Sundays, and closes on about 10 holidays such as 26 January, 15 August and 2 October.
Can a cyber café update my Aadhaar?
Not a normal one. A normal CSC or cyber café can only download, print and order PVC cards. Updates need an authorised Aadhaar centre or an operator-ID counter.
Can I make a new adult Aadhaar at any centre?
No. Since 1 December 2022, adults can enrol only at designated centres, such as Aadhaar Seva Kendras and CSC state or district centres. Children can enrol at any enrolment centre.
Can I show documents from DigiLocker on my phone?
In our experience, no. Centres want physical originals. A printout of an e-document is accepted if it shows a valid digital signature.
How long does it take at the centre?
UIDAI's service standard is a session of up to 20 minutes. Queue time is extra and can be long, so book a slot or go early.
The operator asked for ₹200 for an update. What should I do?
The official fee is ₹75 for details and ₹125 for biometrics. Refuse to pay extra, note the operator ID, centre and time, and complain on 1947 or [email protected].
Can someone come home for an elderly or bedridden person?
Home service can be arranged for eligible senior citizens and disabled people, sometimes with regional office permission. The full fee is charged.
Bottom line
Pick the right kind of centre first, book a free slot if it's listed, and carry originals with matching names. Check the screen before you give biometrics, pay only the official fee and keep your slip. For help or to report overcharging, call UIDAI's free helpline 1947.
