How to Change Photo in Aadhaar (Aadhar) and Update Biometrics?
You can change your Aadhaar photo, fingerprints or iris only in person at an authorised Aadhaar centre, not on myAadhaar or in the Aadhaar App. The fee is ₹125, and name, address or other detail changes made in the same visit are included free. For children it is free at 5–7 and 15–17, and at 7–15 until 30 Sep 2027.

What does a biometric update change in Aadhaar?
"Biometrics" are the parts of your Aadhaar that come from your body, not from documents. From age 5, UIDAI records three things. Children under 5 give only a photo.
| Biometric | What is recorded | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Face photo | Your photo, taken at the centre | Printed on e-Aadhaar and the PVC card, stored in the QR code, used for face authentication |
| Fingerprints | All 10 fingers | Fingerprint authentication at banks, ration shops, LPG and other agencies |
| Iris | Both eyes | Iris authentication, where the agency has an iris scanner |
Photo, fingerprint and iris updates cannot be done online. UIDAI's Aadhaar App FAQ says they need a centre. myAadhaar offers address and document updates only.
Changes to name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile or email are "demographic" updates. They cost ₹75 on their own. For every update type and its limits, see Aadhaar update: fees & limits.
Which fee applies to you?
Age decides most of it. Answer two questions to see what you should pay.
| If the person is… | Then the fee is |
|---|---|
| Under 5 | Photo only: ₹125 in our counter team's experience; see the child guide |
| 5 to 7 (first mandatory update) | ₹0, as a stand-alone request |
| 7 to 15 | ₹0 until 30 Sep 2027, then ₹125 |
| 15 to 17 (second mandatory update) | ₹0, as a stand-alone request |
| 18 or older | ₹125, other detail changes in the same visit included |
How much does an Aadhaar photo or biometric update cost?
These fees come from UIDAI's fee chart for 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2028. UIDAI says charges are the same at every centre. To add up your own case, use the fee calculator.
| Service | Official fee | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Photo, fingerprint or iris update (any one or all) | ₹125 | Centre only |
| Name, address, DOB, gender, mobile or email changed in the same visit | ₹0 | Included in the ₹125 |
| Demographic update on its own | ₹75 | For comparison |
| Child's mandatory biometric update (MBU), ages 5–7 and 15–17 | ₹0 | Must be a stand-alone transaction |
| Child's biometric update, ages 7–15 | ₹0 | Free until 30 Sep 2027 (extended; UIDAI Seva Kendra page and 2026 forms); ₹125 after that |
| Booking an appointment | ₹0 | Only for centres listed on the booking portal |
- Old figure: an old UIDAI FAQ still shows ₹100 for a photo update. That is outdated; ₹125 applies now.
- Next fee cycle: news reports say ₹125 will become ₹150 from October 2028. We have not seen it confirmed by UIDAI.

Which Aadhaar centres can update your photo and fingerprints?
Not every shop with an "Aadhaar" board can do updates. Our counter team sees three levels:
| Type of centre | Photo / biometric update? | What it can do |
|---|---|---|
| CSC with an authorised Aadhaar centre | Yes | All Aadhaar services |
| Centre with an Aadhaar operator ID | Yes | Updates only |
| Normal CSC / village-level entrepreneur (VLE), cyber café | No | Only PVC card orders, prints and e-Aadhaar downloads |
- Aadhaar Seva Kendras (ASKs) are one option. Some bank and post office branches also run Aadhaar centres; ask before you go whether they do biometric updates.
- Booking: free at bookappointment.uidai.gov.in for centres listed there. Other centres are walk-in only. You can reschedule up to 24 hours before your slot; a missed slot means booking again.
- Timings: Aadhaar Seva Kendras usually open on Sundays too. They close on about 10 holidays a year, such as Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti. Most work 9:30 am to 5:30 pm with a lunch break from 1 to 2 pm, so avoid arriving at 1 pm. Check your centre before you go.
- Elderly, disabled or bedridden? In our experience home service can be arranged in some cases, but prior permission from the UIDAI Regional Office may be needed. It is not free; the full fee is charged.
What to expect inside: Aadhaar centres: what to expect.
How do you update your photo and biometrics at a centre?
- Find an authorised Aadhaar centre; book a slot if it is listed
- Can this centre do updates? No: a normal CSC or cyber café can't; find an authorised centre
- Tell the operator what to update: photo, fingerprints, iris and any other details
- The operator captures your new biometrics on the centre's devices
- Are the details on screen correct? No: ask for a correction before you confirm
- Pay ₹125 (₹0 for a child's mandatory update) and keep the update slip
- Track with the number on your slip, then download your new e-Aadhaar
-
Find an authorised centre
Use the centre locator, or ask whether the centre has an Aadhaar operator ID. Book a free slot if the centre is listed on the booking portal.
-
Carry your Aadhaar and any originals
Take your Aadhaar card, letter or e-Aadhaar print so the operator can find your record. Changing name, address or date of birth in the same visit? Take the original proof for each change.
In our experience centres don't accept DigiLocker copies shown on a phone. Bring the physical document.
-
Tell the operator exactly what to update
Say clearly which biometrics you want updated, and list any detail changes. They are all part of one ₹125 request (except a child's mandatory update, which must be on its own).
-
Give your new photo, fingerprints and iris
Follow the operator's instructions at the camera, fingerprint scanner and iris scanner. UIDAI's Citizen's Charter sets up to 20 minutes for an enrolment session at the centre; it gives no separate figure for updates. Waiting in the queue can take longer.
-
Check the details on screen before you confirm
Read your name, date of birth and address on the operator's screen. Mistakes are much easier to stop now than to fix later.
-
Pay and keep the update slip
Pay ₹125, ask for a receipt, and keep the acknowledgement slip safe.
You'll know it worked when you have an acknowledgement slip with a tracking number. You need it to track the update.
Every centre we deal with charges the new rates: ₹125 for a biometric update. Adults who pay ₹125 get their demographic changes included free, so plan all your changes for one visit. Remember that a normal CSC can only print, download e-Aadhaar or order a PVC card; it can't do updates.
What should you know about the new Aadhaar photo?
- It is taken at the centre. You can't upload your own photo on myAadhaar or in the Aadhaar App.
- Follow the operator's instructions. We don't list dress or "look" rules here, because the UIDAI sources we checked don't set any. If you aren't happy with the photo, ask politely before the request is submitted.
- Face authentication compares your face with your Aadhaar photo. The new Aadhaar App also uses a face scan for registration, in good light. Users report face matches failing when they were enrolled as children. When biometrics keep failing, UIDAI's general advice is a biometric update, which records a new photo.
- Your photo appears on e-Aadhaar, the PVC card and in the QR code. After the update, download a fresh e-Aadhaar. Order a new PVC card (₹75) if you want a plastic card with the new photo.
What if your fingerprints don't match at the bank, ration shop or gas agency?
Fingerprint failures are a known problem for elderly people and manual labourers. A 2025 parliamentary committee report noted failures in ration, MGNREGA and pensions. Since 1 October 2026, biometric Aadhaar authentication is also needed to book subsidised LPG. Try these steps in order.
- Try again, and try your other fingers
- Clean the finger and the scanner, then retry
- Did the agency offer another way (OTP, iris or face)? No: ask for it; agencies must offer an alternative so you don't lose a benefit
- Still failing often? Get a biometric update (₹125) at an Aadhaar centre
- New fingerprints recorded; try again once the update is complete
- Agencies must offer an alternative. UIDAI says OTP, iris or face authentication should be offered so a benefit is not denied.
- Ration card: the food department has said no genuine household may be deleted because of biometric failure. In our experience, if e-KYC isn't done the member is put on hold, not deleted. Many ration shops have no iris scanner, as reported for elderly users.
- Error 330? That means your biometrics are locked; it is not a fingerprint problem. Unlock them on myAadhaar, in the Aadhaar App or at a centre (you need your registered mobile). See Lock Aadhaar & biometrics.
More fixes for each situation: Fingerprints not matching.
What happens after the update, and how do you track it?
- Keep the acknowledgement slip
- Open Check Enrolment or Update Status on myAadhaar and enter the number on the slip
- Does the status show the update as done? No: wait; after 30 days call 1947 with the number on your slip
- Download the new e-Aadhaar with an OTP on your registered mobile
- New photo on e-Aadhaar; order a PVC card if you want one
- How long? For updates in general, our team usually sees the change on e-Aadhaar in about a week. Sometimes it takes up to 30 days. Don't treat these times as guaranteed.
- Lost the slip? Log in to myAadhaar with an OTP and look for Update History (beta). It is reported to list your past update requests with date and type.
- No mobile linked? You can't download e-Aadhaar without it. Add your mobile in the same visit (included in the ₹125). Or get a biometric-authenticated e-Aadhaar print at a centre for ₹30–₹40 (UIDAI's own Seva Kendras list ₹40). See download without registered mobile.
Status meanings and rejection fixes: Update status & rejection fixes. Adding a mobile number: Update mobile number.
What if a centre asks for more than ₹125?
The official fee is ₹125, and our team confirms all centres charge the new rates. A December 2023 news report of a Lok Sabha reply says that, if overcharging is proven, the operator is suspended and the registrar fined ₹50,000.
- Check the official fee before you pay
- Is the operator asking only ₹125 (₹0 for a child's MBU)?No: state the official fee politely; don't pay extra
- Note the centre's name, address, operator ID or name, date and amount
- Complain on 1947 or [email protected]
- Save the complaint number
- Charged ₹75 extra for each detail? Demographic changes made with a ₹125 biometric update are included free.
- Don't know the operator ID? People report that this makes complaining harder, so note the centre's name and address, the date and time, and keep your URN slip and receipt to quote when you complain.

What problems come up with photo and biometric updates, and how do you fix them?
| Your situation | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A website or WhatsApp message offers "photo update from home" | Fake. Biometric updates are centre only | Ignore it; never share your OTP |
| The cyber café or CSC says it can't update your photo | Correct: normal CSCs can only print, download and order PVC | Go to an authorised Aadhaar centre |
| Asked ₹200, or ₹75 extra for each detail | Overcharging | Pay ₹125 only; complain on 1947 |
| Charged ₹125 for your 10-year-old | Ages 7–15 are free until 30 Sep 2027 | Ask for the free update; if charged, complain on 1947. Check the dates with the child update due-date calculator |
| Charged for your 5-year-old's first biometric update | The mandatory update at 5–7 is free | Ask for it as a stand-alone MBU; complain if charged |
| Fingerprints fail at the bank, ration shop or gas agency | Common for elderly people and manual workers | Retry, use other fingers, clean; ask for OTP, iris or face; then a biometric update (see above) |
| Error 330 during authentication | Your biometrics are locked | Unlock on myAadhaar, the Aadhaar App or at a centre |
| Twins' biometrics mixed up | A centre can't fix this | Only the UIDAI Regional Office can; call 1947 for the next step |
| Reached the centre at 1 pm and no service | Lunch break 1–2 pm at many centres | Wait until 2 pm, or arrive in the morning |
| Status still not done after 30 days | Delayed or stuck | Call 1947 with the number on your slip; see update status |
| Lost the update slip | You need its number to check status | myAadhaar → Update History (OTP login) |
Photo and biometric update for NRIs
- A biometric update needs a visit to India. Updates are centre only, and reports say there is no embassy route.
- NRIs pay the same ₹125. Name, address or other changes in the same visit are included.
- Plan the visit early in your trip, and book a slot if your centre is listed on bookappointment.uidai.gov.in.
- Back abroad, you can check the status on myAadhaar with the number on your slip. Downloading e-Aadhaar needs an OTP on your registered mobile, and UIDAI's 2026 forms say a non-Indian mobile number gets no SMS. See Aadhaar for NRIs.
Region not right?
Photo-update and fingerprint scams
- There is no online photo or fingerprint update. Links on SMS or WhatsApp promising one from home are fake.
- Never share your OTP or Aadhaar number with a caller, even one who says your Aadhaar "will be blocked".
- Don't install screen-sharing apps (AnyDesk-type) because a stranger asks you to.
- Fingerprints can be misused to withdraw cash at micro-ATMs (AePS fraud). Lock your biometrics when you don't need them, and share only masked copies. Lost money? Call 1930 or use cybercrime.gov.in quickly.
- The fee is ₹125. Anyone asking more is overcharging; complain on 1947.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my Aadhaar photo online?
No. Photo, fingerprint and iris updates need an Aadhaar centre. myAadhaar and the Aadhaar App can't do them, and any website offering it is fake.
What is the fee for an Aadhaar photo change?
₹125, the same at every centre. The ₹100 figure on some websites is outdated. A child's mandatory update at 5–7 or 15–17 is free.
Can I change my address or name in the same visit?
Yes. Demographic changes made with a ₹125 biometric update are included free. Take the original proof for each change. Name, date of birth and gender still have lifetime limits.
How many times can I change my Aadhaar photo?
UIDAI's lifetime limits cover only name (twice), gender and date of birth (once each). Photo and other biometrics are not on that list.
Can a CSC or cyber café update my photo?
Only if it runs an authorised Aadhaar centre. A normal CSC or cyber café can order a PVC card, print or download e-Aadhaar, but not do updates.
How long does the new photo take to show on e-Aadhaar?
For updates in general, our team usually sees the change in about a week, sometimes up to 30 days. Track it with the number on your slip.
Is the biometric update free for my child?
Free at 5–7 and 15–17, as a stand-alone request. From 7 to 15 it is free until 30 September 2027, then ₹125. Our due-date calculator shows the dates for your child. See our child biometric update guide.
My fingerprints don't work at the ration shop. What can I do?
Retry with other fingers and clean the scanner. Ask for OTP, iris or face authentication, which agencies must offer. If it keeps failing, get a biometric update at an Aadhaar centre.
Do I need an appointment?
Not always. Booking is free for centres listed on bookappointment.uidai.gov.in; other centres are walk-in only.
Can I update my biometrics from abroad?
No. You need to visit an Aadhaar centre in India; updates are centre only, and reports say there is no embassy route.
Bottom line
A new photo, fingerprints or iris means one visit to an authorised Aadhaar centre and ₹125, with other detail changes included. Children's updates are free at 5–7 and 15–17, and at 7–15 until 30 Sep 2027. Keep your URN slip, ignore "online photo update" offers, and call UIDAI's free helpline 1947 if you're stuck or overcharged.
