Can the postman help you?
| Your situation | Best route |
|---|---|
| Only a mobile change, and your post office offers the doorstep service | Postman at home (₹75) |
| Mobile change, service not offered near you | Aadhaar centre (₹75), or the Aadhaar App if your old number works |
| New Aadhaar for a child below 5 | Ask the post office (free at a few); otherwise any centre (free) |
| Name, date of birth, photo, adult new Aadhaar | Aadhaar centre |
| Senior or disabled person who can't travel | Ask about UIDAI home service (full fee) |
What can the postman do for your Aadhaar?
India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) is the bank run by India Post. Its own page lists these Aadhaar services:
| Service | Fee | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile number update at your doorstep, by the postman or Gramin Dak Sevak | ₹75 incl. taxes | Being started in phases; selected post offices only |
| Child enrolment for children below 5 | Nil | A few selected post offices only |
| Child mandatory biometric update (at 5 and 15) | Free at 5–7 and 15–17; 7–15 free until 30 Sep 2027 | Not listed by IPPB. In our experience the doorstep service also does it |
IPPB's advice is simple: visit your nearest post office or contact your postman. For a child below 5, a parent's or legal guardian's Aadhaar is used (Head of Family route), and a child born on or after 1 Oct 2023 needs a birth certificate. See Baal Aadhaar for children and Child biometric update (5 & 15); check your child's dates with the child update due-date calculator.
How do you ask for a doorstep mobile update?
- Ask at your nearest post office, or ask your postman
- Is the service running at your post office? No: use an Aadhaar centre or the app
- The postman or Gramin Dak Sevak visits your home
- You confirm it's you and give the new mobile number
- Pay ₹75 (including taxes)
- Check later that the new number is linked
-
Ask at your post office first
The service runs only at selected post offices, so ask at your branch or ask your postman. 155299 is IPPB's general contact line (normal call charges); IPPB doesn't list it as a booking line.
-
Be at home with the new mobile
News reports describe the doorstep update as a biometric check, like at a centre, so the Aadhaar holder should be at home.
-
Pay ₹75 and keep any receipt
IPPB lists ₹75 including taxes. Don't pay more.
-
Check the number later
At our counter we use Verify Email/Mobile Number on myAadhaar or uidai.gov.in: enter the Aadhaar number and the mobile number to see if it is the linked one.
In our experience, after a doorstep request, the postman sometimes doesn't come, or comes late. If nobody comes, go back to the post office or use a centre.
What can't the postman do?
IPPB's page lists only the mobile update and child enrolment below 5. Everything else is not listed by IPPB, so plan another route:
- Name, date of birth, gender, photo, fingerprints, iris: an Aadhaar centre. Biometric update ₹125; demographic update ₹75.
- Address: online on myAadhaar or the Aadhaar App (₹75), or at a centre.
- New Aadhaar for adults: only at designated centres, such as Aadhaar Seva Kendras, CSC state or district centres and designated post office centres.
- Email: free in the Aadhaar App until 31 Dec 2026.
To find or book a centre, see Aadhaar centres: what to expect and Book an Aadhaar appointment. Booking at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra is free.
Postman, centre or app: which is better for a mobile update?
| Postman at home (IPPB) | Aadhaar centre | Aadhaar App | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fee | ₹75 incl. taxes | ₹75 | ₹75 (reported; UIDAI says "prescribed charges") |
| Available | Selected post offices only | Any Aadhaar centre | Anywhere, on a smartphone |
| Old number needed? | Not listed by IPPB | No | Yes: OTP to the old number, then a face check |
| Documents | Not listed by IPPB | None, in our experience | None; OTP and face check |
| How it goes in our experience | Postman sometimes late or doesn't come | Same day; OTPs on the new number in 1–2 days | Works in roughly half the cases; a failed face check is the most common problem |
For the full mobile-update guide, see Update mobile number.
When a customer needs a new mobile number on Aadhaar quickly, we send them to an Aadhaar centre: no document is needed and the fee is ₹75. Doorstep requests we hear about sometimes wait because the postman doesn't come or comes late.
What if an elderly or disabled person can't travel?
The IPPB postman service is not the same as UIDAI's home service. In our experience, UIDAI home service can be arranged for eligible senior citizens, disabled people and some special cases. Prior permission from the UIDAI Regional Office may be needed, and the full fee is charged. See Elderly, disabled & bedridden.
Problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Postman never came after you asked for a doorstep visit | In our experience the postman sometimes doesn't come, or comes late | Ask at your post office in person, or go to an Aadhaar centre (₹75) |
| Post office says the service isn't available | It runs in phases, at selected post offices only | Use a centre, or the Aadhaar App if your old number works |
| Your old SIM is lost | The app needs an OTP on the old number | In our experience an Aadhaar centre can update it the same day |
| Post office doesn't enrol children | Only a few selected post offices do | Any Aadhaar centre enrols children free; take the birth certificate and a parent's Aadhaar |
| Asked to pay more than ₹75 for the mobile update | Overcharging | Refuse, and complain to 1947 or [email protected] |
Can the postman help NRIs?
- The doorstep service works through your local post office in India. News reports describe a biometric check, so the Aadhaar holder should be there in person.
- A non-Indian mobile number gets no Aadhaar SMS. Keep an Indian number linked if you can.
- Biometric updates need a visit to India; there is no embassy or online route.
- On your next visit, in our experience a centre can update your mobile number the same day.
Region not right?
Fake "update from home" offers
- Ignore SMS or WhatsApp links promising "update Aadhaar mobile from home". A real doorstep request starts at your post office or with your own postman.
- Never share an OTP or your Aadhaar number with a caller, even one who says "your Aadhaar will be blocked" or claims to be from the post office.
- Don't install apps or screen-sharing apps (AnyDesk-type) because someone asks you to. More: Aadhaar fraud & scams.
- The doorstep mobile update is ₹75 including taxes. Don't pay extra.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the postman charge for an Aadhaar mobile update?
IPPB lists ₹75 including taxes. That is the same as the ₹75 fee at an Aadhaar centre.
How do I book the postman for Aadhaar?
IPPB says to visit your nearest post office or contact your postman. It runs only at selected post offices. 155299 is IPPB's general contact number, not a listed booking line.
Is 155299 the Aadhaar helpline?
No. 155299 is India Post Payments Bank's contact number. UIDAI's free Aadhaar helpline is 1947.
Can the postman do my child's 5-year or 15-year biometric update?
IPPB's page doesn't list it. In our experience the doorstep service also does it, so ask at your post office. If not, any centre does it free at ages 5–7 and 15–17; ages 7–15 are free until 30 Sep 2027.
Can an adult get a new Aadhaar at home?
IPPB doesn't list it. Adults enrol only at designated centres. For seniors or disabled people who can't travel, ask about UIDAI's home service (full fee).
Can I link a family member's mobile number?
Yes. In our experience a father's or son's SIM can be linked to your Aadhaar without any problem.
Bottom line
The IPPB postman can update your Aadhaar mobile number for ₹75 and enrol children below 5 free, but only where your post office offers it. Ask there first. If nothing happens, an Aadhaar centre is the reliable route. For Aadhaar help, call UIDAI's free helpline 1947.
