How to Spot and Report Aadhaar (Aadhar) Fraud?
Most Aadhaar fraud starts with a leaked Aadhaar number, a copied fingerprint or an OTP you were tricked into sharing. Check your authentication history in the Aadhaar App, lock your biometrics in the app or by SMS to 1947, and share only masked copies. If money was taken, call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in at once.

What do common Aadhaar scams look like?
Each card shows what the scam looks like, what the fraudster wants, and what you should do.
-
Fake "update from home" links
Looks like: an SMS or WhatsApp link to a website promising "update your Aadhaar mobile from home".
They want: your Aadhaar number, your OTP or a fee.
Do this: don't tap it. Use only pages ending in uidai.gov.in, UIDAI's Aadhaar App, or an Aadhaar centre.
-
"Your Aadhaar will be blocked" calls
Looks like: a caller says your Aadhaar will be blocked unless you confirm some details.
They want: your OTP or Aadhaar number.
Do this: hang up. Never tell an OTP to anyone on a call, even if they say they are from UIDAI or a bank.
-
Screen-sharing and fake apps
Looks like: someone "helping" you asks you to install an AnyDesk-type app, or an Aadhaar app from a link.
They want: to see your screen, including any OTP that arrives.
Do this: never install it. Get UIDAI's Aadhaar App only from the Play Store or App Store.
-
AePS fingerprint fraud
Looks like: cash is withdrawn from your bank account at a micro-ATM, and you never got an OTP.
They want: your money. They take your number from photocopies and copy your fingerprint from property papers or with a silicone clone.
Do this: lock your biometrics and report within the golden hour.
-
Fake or AI-made e-Aadhaar
Looks like: a card or PDF that looks real, sometimes made with AI, shown to you as ID.
They want: to pass as someone else.
Do this: scan its QR code with UIDAI's Aadhaar App.
-
Photocopies kept by others
Looks like: a hotel, shop or office keeps a photocopy of your full Aadhaar.
The risk: your full number can be reused, for example in AePS fraud.
Do this: give a masked copy, or ask them to scan your QR instead.
Worried that your PAN is being misused too? Our PAN guide covers it: PAN fraud and misuse.
Were you scammed? What should you do first?
| What happened | Do this first |
|---|---|
| Money taken through AePS or a micro-ATM | Call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in at once; then lock biometrics (steps) |
| OTP shared or app installed, no money lost yet | Remove the app, check your authentication history, lock biometrics |
| Documents or photocopies misused | Lock biometrics; report to 1947 or the police |
| Fake Aadhaar card shown to you | Scan the QR with the Aadhaar App (how) |
How do you check your authentication history?
Every time your Aadhaar is used to confirm your identity, it is recorded. UIDAI shows the last 6 months, up to 50 records at a time. Each record shows the type (fingerprint, iris, face, OTP or demographic), the time, the agency that asked, a transaction ID and the response. The new Aadhaar App has this history built in.
- Open UIDAI's Aadhaar App and log in to your profile
- Open the authentication history
- See the last 6 months: type, time, agency, transaction ID, response
- Do you recognise every entry? No: lock your biometrics now and report it
- All clear. Check again from time to time
-
Open UIDAI's Aadhaar App
First-time users register with the Aadhaar number, an OTP on the registered mobile, a face check (in good light) and a 6-digit PIN. The app needs Android 9 or newer, or iOS 16 or newer.
-
Open the authentication history
Choose the profile you want to check. Up to 5 family profiles can be added on one phone.
-
Read each entry
Look at the type and time. A fingerprint check at a time you were at home, or an agency you have never used, is a warning sign.
-
Act on anything you don't recognise
Lock your biometrics first, then report it. Note the time and transaction ID for your complaint.
Tip: UIDAI sends an email notice for each authentication. Link your email to get these alerts; email update in the Aadhaar App is free until 31 Dec 2026.

How do you lock your biometrics right now?
A biometric lock blocks fingerprint, iris and face checks on your Aadhaar. Anyone who tries gets error 330. That helps stop AePS fingerprint fraud. You can lock in two ways:
- Aadhaar App: it has a one-click biometric lock and unlock.
- SMS to 1947 from your registered mobile: two SMS, no app or internet needed. Use the helper below or our full SMS command generator.
- Is the SIM registered with your Aadhaar in your phone? No: update your mobile number at a centre first
- Is your Aadhaar number (UID) unlocked? No: biometric commands don't work while the UID is locked. Unlock it first
- Send
GETOTP+ last 4 digits of Aadhaar to 1947 - A 6-digit OTP arrives by SMS
- Send
ENABLEBIOLOCK+ last 4 digits + OTP to 1947 - Biometrics locked: fingerprint, iris and face checks fail with error 330
Lock: send GETOTP 1234, then ENABLEBIOLOCK 1234 123456 (last 4 digits of Aadhaar, then the OTP). Unlock: GETOTP 1234, then DISABLEBIOLOCK 1234 123456. VID: GVID 1234 (new) or RVID 1234 (current). Send each to 1947.
This works only on your phone. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Never type your full Aadhaar number into any website except uidai.gov.in.
Example: Aadhaar 9876-5432-1987 → GETOTP 1987, then ENABLEBIOLOCK 1987 012345. Two family members on one mobile whose Aadhaar ends in the same 4 digits use the last 8 digits in the second SMS. No reply to your SMS? Contact your mobile operator. For every lock option, see Lock Aadhaar and biometrics.
Think before you lock your whole Aadhaar number (UID lock). It blocks all authentication: fingerprint, face, iris, OTP and demographic. While it is locked, bank e-KYC fails. Unlocking needs your latest 16-digit VID. For everyday protection, the biometric lock is usually the safer choice.
What should you do after AePS fraud?
AePS lets people withdraw cash at a micro-ATM with their Aadhaar number and fingerprint. Fraudsters get the number from photocopies and copy the fingerprint from property documents or with a silicone clone. No OTP is involved, so you get no warning. Gujarat Cyber Crime advises reporting within the "golden hour", as soon as you notice.
- You notice a withdrawal you didn't make
- Call 1930 at once, or report on cybercrime.gov.in
- Lock your biometrics (app or SMS to 1947)
- Check your authentication history for the fingerprint entry
- Tell UIDAI on 1947 or [email protected]; complain to the police
- Keep every complaint number and record
-
Call 1930 or report online
Call 1930 or file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in. Do this first; every minute counts.
-
Lock your biometrics
Use the Aadhaar App or the SMS helper. This stops more withdrawals with your fingerprint.
-
Collect the details
Note the time and agency of the fingerprint entry in your authentication history. Knowing which bank account is linked to your Aadhaar also helps; see bank seeding.
-
Tell UIDAI and the police
Report the misuse on 1947 or [email protected], and complain at your police station.
How do you spot a fake Aadhaar card?
Fake e-Aadhaar cards, including AI-made ones, are in the news. Looks alone won't tell you. Check the data instead:
- Scan the QR code with UIDAI's Aadhaar App. The secure QR can be read only with the Aadhaar App, the Aadhaar QR Scanner app or UIDAI's Windows reader, and it works offline. It holds the photo, name, gender, date of birth, address and the last 4 digits of the Aadhaar number. If these don't match the card, don't accept it.
- Check the digital signature of an e-Aadhaar PDF in Adobe Reader. A genuine one is signed by "(n)Code Solutions CA 2014". At our counter we validate the signature before printing, because banks and the passport office ask for a validated copy.
- Check the number on UIDAI's Check Aadhaar Validity service.
For all the ways to check an Aadhaar, see Verify an Aadhaar.

What does the law say about Aadhaar misuse?
The Aadhaar Act, 2016 sets these penalties:
| Section | Offence | Penalty |
|---|---|---|
| s.34 | Impersonation | Jail up to 3 years |
| s.36 | Falsely posing as an authority | Jail up to 3 years |
| s.37 | Disclosing identity information | Jail up to 3 years; fine ₹10,000 (₹1 lakh for a company) |
| s.38 | Unauthorised access to the central database | Jail up to 10 years and a fine of at least ₹10 lakh |
| s.42 | General penalty | Fine up to ₹25,000 |
Reported cases: a cyber café owner in Bareilly was reportedly arrested for forging Aadhaar and Ayushman cards (Aug 2025). A DTP centre in Bengaluru was reportedly caught creating Aadhaar with fake rent agreements (Nov 2024). Never buy fake documents to get or change an Aadhaar.
What problems come up when locking or reporting, and how do you fix them?
| Your situation | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Fingerprint fails at the bank or ration shop with error 330 | Your biometric lock is on | Unlock (app or DISABLEBIOLOCK SMS), finish the check, then lock again |
| Bank refuses KYC after you locked | The lock blocks the check | Unlock before the KYC, then lock again |
| Biometric SMS command doesn't work | Your Aadhaar number (UID) is locked | Unlock the UID with your latest VID first (how) |
| No reply from 1947 | SMS not sent from the registered mobile, or not delivered | Send from the registered SIM; if it still fails, contact your mobile operator |
| Biometric-lock page stuck or site down | UIDAI site busy | Use the SMS route or the Aadhaar App |
| You forgot your VID | — | SMS RVID + last 4 digits of Aadhaar to 1947 |
| No registered mobile | App and SMS routes won't work | Update your mobile at an Aadhaar centre (₹75) |
| Unknown entry in your history | Someone may have used your Aadhaar | Lock biometrics; report to 1947; call 1930 if money is gone |
| Centre charged more than ₹75 / ₹125 | Overcharging | Complain on 1947 or [email protected]; reports say a proven case can mean suspension and a ₹50,000 fine for the registrar |
Protecting your Aadhaar from abroad
- The Aadhaar App and SMS to 1947 both need your registered Indian mobile. A non-Indian mobile number gets no SMS from UIDAI, so without a working Indian SIM you can't get OTPs.
- Before you travel, you can lock your biometrics while your Indian SIM still works. You can unlock later in the app or at an Aadhaar centre.
- Email [email protected] works from anywhere, and cybercrime.gov.in is an online portal.

Five rules that stop most Aadhaar scams
- Never tell an OTP to anyone on a call, even if they say they are from UIDAI or a bank.
- Never install a screen-sharing app (AnyDesk-type) because a caller asks.
- Use only pages ending in uidai.gov.in and UIDAI's own Aadhaar App.
- Give a masked copy, not a full photocopy.
- Money gone? Call 1930 first, then tell UIDAI on 1947.
Frequently asked questions
Can someone take money with just my Aadhaar number?
AePS fraud uses your Aadhaar number together with a copied fingerprint, and no OTP is needed. That's why a biometric lock protects you: a locked fingerprint check fails with error 330.
How do I know if my Aadhaar was used without my knowledge?
Check the authentication history in UIDAI's Aadhaar App. It shows the last 6 months, up to 50 records at a time. UIDAI also sends an email notice for each authentication if your email is linked.
Will a biometric lock stop me from using Aadhaar?
It blocks only fingerprint, iris and face checks. Before a fingerprint check at a bank, ration shop or gas agency, unlock it, then lock it again afterwards.
Should I lock my whole Aadhaar (UID lock) instead?
Usually not. A UID lock blocks all authentication, including OTP and bank e-KYC, and needs your latest VID to unlock. In our experience unlocking can be hard when UIDAI's servers are down.
What is the "golden hour"?
It's the time right after a fraud, when reporting quickly gives the best chance to act. Call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in as soon as you notice money missing.
A caller says my Aadhaar will be blocked and asks for an OTP. What do I do?
Hang up. This is one of the most common scams we see. Never share an OTP or your Aadhaar number on a call.
How can I tell if an Aadhaar card is fake?
Scan its QR code with UIDAI's Aadhaar App and compare the details. For an e-Aadhaar PDF, also validate the digital signature in Adobe Reader.
Can a hotel keep a photocopy of my Aadhaar?
In Dec 2025 UIDAI said storing photocopies violates the Aadhaar Act, and hotels are expected to verify through the app instead. In our experience many still take photocopies, so give a masked copy.
Is a masked Aadhaar accepted?
In our experience it is accepted almost everywhere except the passport office. It shows only the last 4 digits of your number.
What is the punishment for misusing someone's Aadhaar?
Under the Aadhaar Act, impersonation and disclosing identity information can mean up to 3 years in jail. Unauthorised access to the central database can mean up to 10 years and a fine of at least ₹10 lakh.
Bottom line
Keep your OTP to yourself, lock your biometrics, share masked copies and glance at your authentication history now and then. If money is taken, call 1930 first. For Aadhaar misuse and lock questions, UIDAI's free helpline is 1947.
