How to Find a Lost Aadhaar (Aadhar) Number or EID?
Use the free Retrieve EID/UID service on myAadhaar. Enter your name and the mobile number or email linked to your Aadhaar, then type the captcha and the OTP. Your Aadhaar number or Enrolment ID (EID) arrives by SMS or email. No mobile or email linked? Visit an Aadhaar centre, where your fingerprint or iris proves who you are.

Which way can you find your Aadhaar number?
| Your situation | Best route |
|---|---|
| Registered mobile or linked email works | Retrieve EID/UID on myAadhaar (free) |
| You know the last 4 digits and have the registered SIM | Get your VID by SMS to 1947, then download e-Aadhaar with it |
| No mobile or email linked, or the number is lost | Aadhaar centre: ₹30–₹40 biometric print or ₹75 mobile update |
| You enrolled but never got an Aadhaar | Check your enrolment status |
What is the difference between the Aadhaar number and the EID?
| Aadhaar number (UID) | Enrolment ID (EID) | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 12 digits | 28 digits |
| What it is | Your permanent Aadhaar number | A 14-digit enrolment number plus a 14-digit date-time stamp |
| Where you see it | Aadhaar letter, e-Aadhaar, PVC card | The slip you got at enrolment |
| Use for download | Yes | Yes, but only after your Aadhaar has been generated |
The EID is not your Aadhaar number. If you type an EID, include the date and time printed on the slip, because they are part of the 28 digits. In NRC Assam cases, an "SID" (S plus 27 digits) is used instead.
How do you retrieve your Aadhaar number or EID online?
- Open Retrieve EID/UID on myAadhaar
- Choose Aadhaar number (UID) or Enrolment ID (EID)
- Is a mobile or email linked to your Aadhaar? No: go to an Aadhaar centre
- Type your name, the mobile or email, and the captcha
- Enter the 6-digit OTP
- Your number arrives by SMS or email
-
Open the Retrieve EID/UID page
Use UIDAI's official link below. The service is free. Don't use sites that ask you to pay for it.
-
Choose what you want back
Pick Aadhaar number (UID) if your Aadhaar has been generated. Pick Enrolment ID (EID) if you lost your enrolment slip.
-
Enter your name and registered mobile or email
Type your full name with the same spelling as on your Aadhaar or enrolment slip. Then type the mobile number or email that is linked to your Aadhaar.
A different mobile won't work. The OTP goes only to the number or email linked to your Aadhaar.
-
Type the captcha and send the OTP
Type the security code exactly as shown and ask for the OTP. Enter the 6-digit OTP when it arrives.
-
Read your number in the SMS or email
Your Aadhaar number or EID is sent to the same mobile or email. Write it down somewhere safe.
You'll know it worked when an SMS or email with your Aadhaar number or EID arrives. Then you can download your e-Aadhaar.
UIDAI is moving services to myaadhaarbeta.uidai.gov.in, so the address may change. Both myaadhaar and myaadhaarbeta are UIDAI sites.
Can you use your email instead of your mobile number?
Yes, if an email is linked to your Aadhaar. In our experience Retrieve EID/UID works with your name and email: the OTP comes on email and the number is retrieved. This helps if you lost the old SIM but still use the same email.
Not sure whether your email or mobile is linked? You'll need your Aadhaar number to check it, so try the retrieval with each number or email you might have given at enrolment.
Can you get a Virtual ID (VID) by SMS if you forgot the Aadhaar number?
Yes, if two things are true. The registered SIM must be in your phone, and you must know the last 4 digits of your Aadhaar. A masked copy, for example, shows only the last 4. Send RVID plus those 4 digits to 1947. Your current 16-digit VID comes back by SMS. No VID yet? GVID creates one.
A VID can be used instead of the Aadhaar number to download e-Aadhaar. The downloaded e-Aadhaar then shows your Aadhaar number (unless you choose the masked version).
- Is the registered SIM in your phone? No: use the centre route
- Send RVID plus the last 4 digits of your Aadhaar to 1947
- Your 16-digit VID arrives by SMS
- Open Download e-Aadhaar and choose VID
- Enter the OTP from your registered mobile
- e-Aadhaar downloads with your Aadhaar number on it
Type RVID 1234 (current VID) or GVID 1234 (new VID), using the last 4 digits of your Aadhaar, and send it to 1947.
This works only on your phone. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Never type your full Aadhaar number into any website except uidai.gov.in.
- Family on one mobile: if two Aadhaar numbers on the same mobile end in the same 4 digits, use the last 8 digits instead.
- No reply SMS? UIDAI says to contact your mobile operator if the SMS is not delivered.
- Only one VID is valid at a time. It doesn't expire, and a new one can be made after at least one day.

What if no mobile or email is linked to your Aadhaar?
Then no online route can work, because every online route needs an OTP. Go to an Aadhaar centre. Your fingerprint or iris confirms who you are. You have two choices there:
| Option | Fee | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Biometric-verified e-Aadhaar print | ₹30–₹40 | A printed e-Aadhaar with your Aadhaar number on it |
| Add or update your mobile number | ₹75 | No document needed. In our experience OTPs start on the new number within 1–2 days. Then you can retrieve and download online any time |
- Go to an Aadhaar centre (find one on Bhuvan)
- Give your fingerprint or iris
- Do you only need a copy today? No: ask to add your mobile number (₹75)
- Pay ₹30–₹40 for a biometric-verified e-Aadhaar print
- Your Aadhaar number is on the print
Our advice: do both if you can. The print solves today's need, and a linked mobile means you won't need a centre next time. For more, see Download without a registered mobile and Update your mobile number.
When customers have lost both the number and the linked mobile, we suggest one of two things. Either they update the mobile at a centre and download e-Aadhaar after 1–2 days, or they take a biometric-verified e-Aadhaar print at the centre. People who call 1947 for their number are usually sent to a centre too.
Find a centre bhuvan-app3.nrsc.gov.in
A normal cyber café can download and print e-Aadhaar only if you know the number and get the OTP. Biometric services need an authorised Aadhaar centre. See what to expect at an Aadhaar centre.
What if your Aadhaar was never generated?
If you enrolled but never got a letter, SMS or e-Aadhaar, there may be no Aadhaar number yet. Use the EID on your enrolment slip to check the status. Lost the slip? Retrieve the EID online as shown above.
- UIDAI's Citizen's Charter says an Aadhaar is generated within 30 days for ages 0–18, and within 180 days for adults (in 90% of cases).
- A status SMS is due within 30 days of enrolment.
- Full steps are in Enrolment status and Aadhaar not received.
Don't enrol again because you lost the number. You can enrol only once; a second enrolment is rejected. If your first enrolment may already have made an Aadhaar, UIDAI says to use Retrieve EID/UID instead.
What doesn't work when you've lost your Aadhaar number?
"You can download Aadhaar with just your name and date of birth." You can't. Every download needs your Aadhaar number, EID or VID plus an OTP, or a visit to an Aadhaar centre. Name-based retrieval also needs your registered mobile or email.
What should you do after you get the number?
- Download your e-Aadhaar. The PDF password is the first 4 letters of your name in CAPITALS plus your year of birth; our PDF password helper works it out for you.
- Save the PDF and note the number somewhere safe, so you won't need to retrieve it again.
- Lost the card itself? Follow the lost Aadhaar plan. You can also order a PVC card (₹75).
- Got the number at a centre? Add a mobile number while you're there, so future downloads work online.
What goes wrong, and how do you fix it?
| Your situation | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OTP doesn't arrive or comes late | Network delay, or the number you typed isn't the linked one | Wait a few minutes and try again. Try the linked email instead |
| UIDAI site is down or very slow | Common in our experience, at any time of day | Try again later. The service is free, so never pay a site that claims to do it faster |
| Captcha keeps failing | Typing error or an expired code | Refresh the captcha and type it exactly as shown |
| Registered mobile is lost, or with another person | OTP goes to that SIM only | Use the linked email, or go to a centre |
| Retrieval says details don't match | Name spelled differently, or wrong mobile or email | Use the spelling on your Aadhaar or slip, and try each number or email you may have given |
| RVID SMS gets no reply | Not sent from the registered mobile, or SMS not delivered | Send from the registered SIM; if it still fails, contact your mobile operator |
| EID shown as invalid when downloading | Date-time part missing, or Aadhaar not generated yet | Type all 28 digits; check the enrolment status |
Finding your Aadhaar number from abroad
- Retrieve EID/UID works from abroad if your registered Indian mobile still receives SMS.
- Email is mandatory when NRIs enrol, so the email route may work for you even without an Indian SIM.
- Nothing works? There are no Aadhaar centres abroad. Visit a centre during your next trip to India.
Region not right?
"Find your Aadhaar" scams
- Ignore SMS or WhatsApp links that promise to find your Aadhaar by name and date of birth. Use only uidai.gov.in or myaadhaar sites.
- Never share your OTP. A caller saying "your Aadhaar will be blocked" and asking for the OTP or number is a fraud.
- Don't install screen-sharing apps (AnyDesk-type) for anyone who offers to "find" your number.
- More tricks to watch for: common Aadhaar frauds and scams.
- Retrieval online is free. At a centre the print is ₹30–₹40 (UIDAI's own Seva Kendras list ₹40) and a mobile update is ₹75. Report overcharging on 1947.
Frequently asked questions
How can I find my Aadhaar number if I lost my card?
Use Retrieve EID/UID on myAadhaar with your name and the mobile or email linked to your Aadhaar. The number arrives by SMS or email, and it's free.
Can I find my Aadhaar number with my name and date of birth?
No, that's a myth. You need your registered mobile or email for the online retrieval, or a visit to an Aadhaar centre.
Will 1947 tell me my Aadhaar number?
In our experience, no. The helpline does not give the Aadhaar number or EID over the phone and sends callers to an Aadhaar centre.
Can I retrieve my Aadhaar number with my email?
In our experience, yes, if an email is linked to your Aadhaar. The OTP comes on email and the number is retrieved.
My mobile number is not linked. What can I do?
Go to an Aadhaar centre. You can get a biometric-verified e-Aadhaar print for ₹30–₹40, or add your mobile number for ₹75 and then retrieve the number online.
I lost my enrolment slip. How do I get my EID?
Choose Enrolment ID (EID) on the Retrieve EID/UID page and enter your name with your registered mobile or email. The EID is sent to you.
Can I download e-Aadhaar without knowing my Aadhaar number?
Yes, with your EID (after your Aadhaar is generated) or a VID. You can get your VID by SMS to 1947 if you know the last 4 digits and have the registered SIM.
Should I apply for a new Aadhaar if I can't find my number?
No. You can enrol only once, and a second enrolment is rejected. Retrieve the number, or visit a centre.
Bottom line
If a mobile or email is linked to your Aadhaar, Retrieve EID/UID on myAadhaar gets your number back for free in a few steps. If nothing is linked, an Aadhaar centre can verify you by fingerprint or iris. For help, UIDAI's free helpline is 1947, though it won't read your number out to you.
