How to Apply for Baal Aadhaar (Aadhar) for a Child or Newborn?
Take the child, the original birth certificate and the parents' Aadhaar to an Aadhaar enrolment centre. For a child under 5, only a photo is taken, and one parent confirms with a fingerprint or iris scan. Enrolment is free. UIDAI's standard is to generate a child's Aadhaar within 30 days.

What is Baal Aadhaar?
Baal Aadhaar is the Aadhaar given to a child under 5. It works like any other Aadhaar, but it is made in a simpler way:
- Through a parent. The child is enrolled under a parent or legal guardian, called the Head of Family (HoF). The child's address is taken from that parent's Aadhaar.
- Photo only. Children under 5 give no fingerprints or iris scans. A parent gives a fingerprint or iris scan instead.
- Free. New enrolment costs nothing at any centre.
- Updated later. The child must give fingerprints and iris scans at age 5 and again at 15. These are the mandatory biometric updates (MBU).
Children aged 5 to 17 can also get a new Aadhaar. They give a photo, all 10 fingerprints and both irises, like adults. News reports in August 2025 said Baal Aadhaar data can be shared with birth registrars, with the parents' consent, to stop duplicate enrolments.
Which route fits your child's age?
| Your situation | Best route |
|---|---|
| Child under 5, has a birth certificate, parent has Aadhaar | Aadhaar centre (free), or IPPB postman at home |
| Child under 5, no birth certificate | Get the birth certificate first |
| Child under 5, parent has no Aadhaar | Parent enrols first, then the child |
| Child in a Child Care Institution | District Child Protection Officer certificate with Form 18 |
| Child aged 5–17 | Parent route encouraged, or the child's own documents; all biometrics taken |
| Child already has Aadhaar and is 5 or 15 | Mandatory biometric update (free at 5–7 and 15–17) |
Which documents do you need for a child's Aadhaar?
These rules come from the 2026 Schedule II (List I for under 5, List II for ages 5–17). For every document and purpose, see Documents required for Aadhaar.
| Child | Route | Documents | Biometrics taken |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 5 | Head of Family route is compulsory | Birth certificate (proves relationship and date of birth) + Aadhaar of both parents, or of one if the child lives with a single parent or guardian | Photo only |
| Under 5, NRI parents | Head of Family route | Indian passport instead of the birth certificate (reported; if born on or after 1 Oct 2023, carry the birth certificate too) + parent's Aadhaar | Photo only |
| Under 5, in a Child Care Institution | No parent route | District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) certificate with Form 18 | Photo only |
| 5 to 17 | Parent route encouraged, or own documents | Birth certificate, Indian passport, domicile certificate, caste certificate, guardianship document, DCPO certificate or transgender ID | Photo, all 10 fingerprints, both irises |
Who can be the Head of Family for a child?
- Only the mother, father or a legal guardian with a valid Aadhaar.
- Both parents' Aadhaar numbers are needed. One is enough if the child lives with a single parent or guardian.
- One of them must confirm with a fingerprint or iris scan, so at least one parent comes along.
- The child's address is copied from the HoF's Aadhaar. Update the parent's address first if it is old.
Checklist before you leave home
- The child
- Original birth certificate (NRI: the child's Indian passport)
- Mother's and father's Aadhaar (or the single parent's or guardian's)
- A mobile number to link. It is optional, but a parent's number works and lets you download the e-Aadhaar later
- For a guardian: the legal guardianship document
Two things send families back most often. First, the father's name is written differently on two documents; that gets the application rejected. Second, they bring a DigiLocker copy on the phone; centres want the physical original. You can also link a parent's mobile number to the child's Aadhaar without any problem.
How do you enrol a child at an Aadhaar centre?
- Go with the child, the original birth certificate and the parents' Aadhaar
- Is the parent's name the same on the birth certificate and the parent's Aadhaar? No: fix the name mismatch first
- Operator enters the child's details; the address comes from the parent's Aadhaar
- A parent gives a fingerprint or iris scan
- Is the child under 5?No: all 10 fingerprints and both irises are taken too
- Child's photo taken; check the details and keep the slip with the EID
- Aadhaar generated, within 30 days by UIDAI's standard
-
Find a centre and book a slot
Children can enrol at any Aadhaar enrolment centre, such as an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or a bank or post office centre. (Adults need a designated centre; children don't.) A normal CSC or cyber café can't enrol. Booking is free at bookappointment.uidai.gov.in for centres listed there; other centres are walk-in only.
-
Take the originals
Take the birth certificate and the parents' Aadhaar. The operator scans the originals and gives them back.
-
Check the details on screen
The name must be entered exactly as on the birth certificate, with no titles. Check the spelling and date of birth before anyone gives biometrics.
-
Confirm with the parent's biometrics
One parent gives a fingerprint or iris scan. For a child under 5, only the child's photo is taken. From age 5, the child also gives all 10 fingerprints and both irises.
-
Keep the enrolment slip
The slip shows the 28-digit Enrolment ID (EID). You need it to check status and download the Aadhaar.
You'll know it worked when you have the printed slip with the EID. UIDAI's session standard is up to 20 minutes.
Enrol each child only once. A second enrolment is rejected. If you think an Aadhaar may already exist, use Retrieve EID/UID instead of enrolling again. Also enter the true date of birth: if a child older than 5 is enrolled as under 5, the Aadhaar may be deactivated.
- Timings: Aadhaar Seva Kendras usually open on Sundays too. They close on about 10 holidays a year, such as Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti. Most work 9:30 am–5:30 pm with a lunch break from 1 to 2 pm, so avoid arriving at 1 pm. Check your centre before you go.

Can a postman make Baal Aadhaar at home?
In some areas. India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) lists free child enrolment at a few post offices, and in our experience its postmen also enrol children up to 5 years at your door. In our experience they also do children's mandatory biometric updates, though IPPB's own page doesn't list them. 155299 is IPPB's general contact line: ask there or at your post office. See Aadhaar services at home (IPPB).
- Ask IPPB (155299) or your post office for a doorstep visit
- Did the postman come on time? No: go to an Aadhaar centre instead
- Postman checks the birth certificate and the parents' Aadhaar
- A parent gives a fingerprint or iris scan; the child's photo is taken
- Keep the enrolment slip with the EID
In our experience booking is unreliable: after a request the postman often doesn't come, or comes late. Ask about any charge when you book; we have no confirmed fee for the home visit. If you need the Aadhaar soon, a centre is faster.
What happens after enrolment?
- Keep the EID from the enrolment slip
- Open myAadhaar → Download Aadhaar and enter the EID
- Does the OTP arrive on the mobile given at enrolment? No: wait for the letter or add a mobile at a centre
- Enter the OTP and download the PDF
- Open it with the password: first 4 letters of the name in CAPITALS + year of birth
- Status: check it on myAadhaar with the EID. See Enrolment status and Aadhaar not received.
- Download: on myAadhaar or in the Aadhaar App, with the EID. The OTP goes to the registered mobile. Without a registered mobile, the e-Aadhaar can't be downloaded. See Download e-Aadhaar.
- Password example: a child named RIA, born in 2024, has the password RIA2024.
- Plastic card: a PVC card costs ₹75, including GST and Speed Post. Order it on myAadhaar or, in our experience, in the Aadhaar App. See Order an Aadhaar PVC card.
When must a child update biometrics?
A Baal Aadhaar has only a photo. As the child grows, UIDAI needs fingerprints and iris scans. These mandatory biometric updates (MBU) are due twice:
| Service | Official fee | Note |
|---|---|---|
| New enrolment, any age | ₹0 | Same at every centre |
| Biometric update at age 5–7 | ₹0 | MBU-1; must be done as a separate transaction |
| Biometric update at age 7–15 | ₹0 until 30 Sep 2027 | Free period extended to 30 Sep 2027; ₹125 after that unless extended again |
| Biometric update at age 15–17 | ₹0 | MBU-2 |
| Name, date of birth or address change | ₹75 | Demographic update |
- Don't miss it. If the update is not done after age 7, the Aadhaar "may be deactivated". UIDAI sends SMS reminders.
- Exams and scholarships: families report that a missed update blocked NEET, JEE or CUET registration and scholarships.
- School camps: school MBU drives started in September 2025. News reports say over 2 crore updates were done in 1.56 lakh schools by August 2026. Ask your child's school.
- At home: IPPB postmen also do children's biometric updates, in our experience (IPPB's own page doesn't list this service).
Full steps: Child biometric update at 5 and 15. Find your child's exact dates with the child update due-date calculator.
What problems come up, and how do you fix them?
| Your situation | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No birth certificate | A child under 5 can't be enrolled; it is compulsory if born on or after 1 Oct 2023 | Register the birth first (see below) |
| Parent has no Aadhaar | Only a parent or guardian with a valid Aadhaar can be HoF | The parent enrols first (see below) |
| Names differ on the birth certificate and the parent's Aadhaar | In our experience the application is rejected | Correct one of them first (see below) |
| Child lives in a Child Care Institution | No parent route | DCPO certificate with Form 18 |
| Twins' biometrics got mixed up | A centre can't fix this | Only the UIDAI Regional Office can fix it |
| Lost the enrolment slip | You don't know the EID | Retrieve EID/UID with the name and registered mobile or email (free). Don't enrol again |
| No mobile given, or OTP doesn't arrive | The e-Aadhaar can't be downloaded | Wait for the letter by post, or add a mobile number at a centre (₹75) |
| Not generated after 30 days | Held for checks or rejected | Call 1947 with the EID. If rejected, enrol again |
| Biometric update missed after age 7 | The Aadhaar may be deactivated | Do the update now; between 7 and 15 it is free until 30 Sep 2027 (₹125 after that) |
Get a birth certificate when you have none
Before you start: for a child under 5, the birth certificate (under the RBD Act 1969) is the proof of both relationship and date of birth. It is compulsory for everyone born on or after 1 October 2023.
How to fix: register the birth with your local birth registrar. Is the registration late? A Delhi High Court ruling of March 2026 was reported on this. It said late birth registration needs an order from the DM or SDM, decided within 3 months.
After: enrol the child with the new certificate. Check the child's name and date of birth on it carefully. Later, an under-18 child's declared date of birth can be changed only with a birth certificate. See Change date of birth.
Enrol the parent first when they have no Aadhaar
Before you start: a child under 5 can only be enrolled through a mother, father or legal guardian who has a valid Aadhaar.
How to fix: the parent applies for their own Aadhaar first. Adults can enrol only at designated centres, such as Aadhaar Seva Kendras. See Apply for a new Aadhaar.
After: once the parent's Aadhaar is generated, enrol the child with it.
Fix a name mismatch
Before you start: names and dates of birth must match across all documents. The relationship proof must show both the child's and the parent's names. In our experience, if the father's name differs between two documents, the application gets rejected.
How to fix:
- Parent's Aadhaar is wrong: correct the parent's name at a centre (₹75). A name can be changed only twice in a lifetime.
- Birth certificate is wrong: ask the office that issued it to correct it before you enrol.
- Child's name typed wrongly at the centre: UIDAI's name-update rules of 18 September 2026 were reported in the news. Under them, a minor's data-entry error needs the Annexure C affidavit plus an identity proof.
After: enrol or update with matching documents, and check the screen before biometrics.
Aadhaar for an NRI's child
- NRIs can enrol on arrival in India; the 182-day stay rule doesn't apply to them.
- For a child under 5, an Indian passport can be used instead of the birth certificate (reported). If the child was born on or after 1 Oct 2023, carry the birth certificate too.
- An NRI parent can act as the Head of Family. Email is mandatory for NRIs.
- Biometric updates at 5 and 15 need a visit to India; there is no embassy or online route.
- More: Aadhaar for NRIs and OCI cardholders.
Region not right?
Child Aadhaar scams
- Enrolment is free. Anyone charging for a child's new Aadhaar is overcharging. Complain on 1947 or [email protected]. Proven overcharging can get the operator suspended, as reported in Parliament.
- There is no online enrolment. Ignore SMS or WhatsApp links offering "Baal Aadhaar from home". Only a real centre or an IPPB postman can enrol a child.
- Never share an OTP or your Aadhaar number with a caller who says "your Aadhaar will be blocked". Don't install screen-sharing apps on a stranger's request.
Frequently asked questions
Is Baal Aadhaar free?
Yes. New enrolment is free at every centre, for children and adults. The biometric updates at 5–7 and 15–17 are also free.
Can a newborn baby get Aadhaar?
Yes. Children under 5, newborns included, enrol through a parent. You need the baby's birth certificate and the parents' Aadhaar.
Are a baby's fingerprints taken?
No. Under 5, only a photo is taken. A parent gives a fingerprint or iris scan instead.
Do both parents have to come?
Both parents' Aadhaar numbers are needed, or one for a single parent. Only one parent has to give a fingerprint or iris scan, so at least one must come.
Can grandparents or an uncle be the Head of Family?
No, not for a child's enrolment. Only the mother, father or a legal guardian with a valid Aadhaar can be the HoF.
How long does it take to get the child's Aadhaar?
UIDAI's standard is 30 days for ages 0–18. Download the e-Aadhaar with the EID as soon as it is generated.
What if there is no birth certificate?
For children born on or after 1 October 2023 it is compulsory. Register the birth first; late registration may need an order from the DM or SDM.
Can the postman make Baal Aadhaar at home?
Sometimes. In our experience, IPPB postmen enrol children up to 5, but arranging a visit through 155299 (IPPB's general contact line) is unreliable, so a centre is often faster.
What happens if the biometric update at 5 is missed?
If it is not done after age 7, the Aadhaar may be deactivated. Between 7 and 15 the update is free until 30 Sep 2027 (₹125 after that).
Will my address come on my child's Aadhaar automatically?
Yes. The child's address is taken from the Head of Family's Aadhaar, so update your own address first if it has changed.
Bottom line
Baal Aadhaar is free and quick: the birth certificate, the parents' Aadhaar and a photo of the child are enough. Put the dates for the updates at 5 and 15 in your calendar. For help, UIDAI's free helpline is 1947.
