How to Correct Your Date of Birth in a PAN Card?
File Form CR-01 on Protean or UTIITSL with a date-of-birth proof showing the correct date. Since 1 April 2026, Aadhaar is not accepted as date-of-birth proof. Use a birth certificate, Class 10 certificate, passport or another listed document. It costs ₹107 with a new card or ₹72 for e-PAN only. Your PAN number stays the same.

Why does the date of birth in your PAN matter?
A wrong date of birth looks like a small typing error. In practice it blocks several everyday tasks:
- PAN–Aadhaar linking. UIDAI says the date of birth and gender in PAN and Aadhaar must be exactly the same. A small name difference can be cleared with an Aadhaar OTP, but a date mismatch can't. Until PAN and Aadhaar are linked, your PAN can stay inoperative.
- Opening the e-PAN file. Protean says the password for the e-PAN PDF is your date of birth. If the PAN record has a different date, the date you know won't open it.
- KYC checks. Banks, mutual funds, brokers and insurers usually check your PAN, name and date of birth together. A mismatch can hold up an account opening or a KYC update.
- Income tax work. Verification services, such as "Verify Your PAN" on the e-Filing portal, ask for your date of birth along with your PAN and name.
The date in PAN is your official date of birth, the one on your documents. It is not the date your family celebrates if the papers say otherwise.
PAN and Aadhaar show different dates: which one should you fix?
Fix the record that is wrong, not the one that is easier to change. Check your birth certificate or Class 10 certificate first. That tells you which date is correct.
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| PAN wrong, Aadhaar right, you have a non-Aadhaar DOB proof | Correct PAN with CR-01 |
| PAN wrong, but your only DOB proof is Aadhaar | Get a valid DOB proof first, then file CR-01 |
| Aadhaar wrong, PAN right | Correct Aadhaar, then link again |
| Both wrong | Correct both with the same proof, then link |
| Not sure which date is correct | Check your birth certificate or another proof first |
| Company or other entity | CR-02 for the date of incorporation |
When Aadhaar has the wrong date
Changing PAN to match a wrong Aadhaar date would put the wrong date on your tax record too. Correct Aadhaar instead. UIDAI limits how many times a date of birth can be updated. Once that limit is used, the normal process won't allow another change. Our Aadhaar guide explains the documents and steps: change date of birth in Aadhaar.
Which documents prove your date of birth from 1 April 2026?
The list comes from Rule 158 of the Income-tax Rules, 2026, published by the Income Tax Department as a document table (Annex G). Form CR-01 asks for proof of date of birth, and Protean says the April 2026 changes apply to correction requests as well as new applications. Give a copy of any one of these, showing the correct date.
| Born on or after 1 Oct 2023 | Born before 1 Oct 2023 (any one) |
|---|---|
| Birth certificate issued by the municipal authority or another office authorised to issue it | Birth certificate |
| Matriculation (Class 10) certificate or mark sheet of a recognised board | |
| Indian passport, driving licence or voter ID | |
| Pension payment order, or marriage certificate from the Registrar of Marriages | |
| Central, state or PSU photo ID card, CGHS or ECHS photo card, domicile certificate, or transgender identity card or certificate | |
| Affidavit sworn before a Magistrate stating your date of birth |
Not accepted as date-of-birth proof: Aadhaar, ration card and pensioner card. They can still prove identity (and Aadhaar can prove address).
Pick a document that already shows the correct date and the same name as your PAN. If your name is also wrong, fix both in the same CR-01. Our guide to changing your name in PAN covers the name proofs.
For the full lists of identity and address proofs, see documents required for PAN.
"Aadhaar is enough to correct the date of birth in PAN." Not since 1 April 2026. Aadhaar is not on the list of date-of-birth proofs, and Protean says this applies even to Aadhaar e-KYC applications. You need another proof, such as a birth certificate or Class 10 certificate.
How much does a date of birth correction cost?
Protean lists these change and correction fees, including GST. The fee is the same whichever field you change.
| What you get | Documents posted / at a centre | Paperless online |
|---|---|---|
| New printed card + e-PAN, Indian address | ₹107 | ₹101 |
| New printed card + e-PAN, foreign address | ₹1,017 | ₹1,011 |
| e-PAN only (no card) | ₹72 | ₹66 |
UTIITSL lists the same ₹107 and ₹72 for new applications; check its correction fee on the payment page before you pay. A PAN centre or agent may add a service charge, which is separate from the official fee.
Can you correct the date online, or do you need a centre?
Both work. CR-01 can be filed on the Protean or UTIITSL website, or at a PAN centre of either one. Protean offers these ways to submit:
| Way to submit | How documents reach them | Post anything? |
|---|---|---|
| e-KYC and e-Sign (Aadhaar OTP) | Online; the DOB proof is still needed separately | No |
| e-Sign with scanned documents | You upload scans | No |
| DSC (digital signature certificate) with scans | You upload scans | No |
| Physical | Signed acknowledgement, photos and copies by post or at a centre | Yes, within 15 days |
e-Sign needs an OTP on the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar. If that number is old, use the physical route or update your Aadhaar mobile first.
How do you correct your date of birth on CR-01?
These steps follow Protean's online process. UTIITSL works in a similar way. Keep a scan of your PAN card and your date-of-birth proof ready.
- Do you have a DOB proof other than Aadhaar, showing the correct date? No: get a birth certificate, Class 10 certificate or Magistrate affidavit first (list)
- Open Protean or UTIITSL and choose the CR-01 correction request
- Enter the correct date of birth and check every other field
- Pay ₹66–₹107 and save the acknowledgement
- e-Sign, or post the signed acknowledgement and copies within 15 days
- Date corrected: e-PAN by email, new card by post if chosen
-
Get your date-of-birth proof ready
Pick one document from the proof table. It must show the correct date. Also keep a copy of your PAN card (or an FIR copy if the card is lost), an identity proof and an address proof. Aadhaar works for identity and address.
You'll know it worked when you hold a listed document showing the date you will enter on the form.
If you have no proof: apply for a birth certificate at your municipal office, or get an affidavit sworn before a Magistrate.
-
Open the correction application
On Protean, go to onlineservices.proteantech.in → PAN. On UTIITSL, go to pan.utiitsl.com → "Change/Correction in PAN Card". Choose the change or correction request for an individual (CR-01), not a new PAN application.
Never apply for a new PAN to "fix" the date. That gives you a second PAN, which is not allowed.
-
Enter the correct date and check the rest
Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number, then the correct date of birth as DD MM YYYY. Check your name, father's name and address too. They should match your documents and your Aadhaar.
You'll know it worked when the preview shows the correct date before you submit.
-
Choose card or e-PAN only, then pay
Pick a printed card (₹107, or ₹101 paperless) or e-PAN only (₹72, or ₹66 paperless). Pay by debit card, credit card or net banking.
You'll know it worked when the acknowledgement arrives by email with a 15-digit acknowledgement number.
If money was taken but no acknowledgement came: don't pay again at once. Call Protean on 020-27218080 with the payment details.
-
Sign digitally, or send the papers
With e-Sign or a DSC, nothing is posted. Otherwise sign the printed acknowledgement, add two recent colour photos (4.5 × 3.5 cm), and sign across the photo as the form asks. Send it with copies of your PAN and proofs to the address on the acknowledgement. Write "APPLICATION FOR PAN – N-[15-digit acknowledgement number]" on the envelope.
Papers must reach Protean within 15 days of the online application. Late papers can delay or stop your request.
-
Track the request
Use the acknowledgement number on the same site you applied on. UTIITSL also lets you track with your PAN and date of birth. How to check PAN application status →
What happens after the date is corrected?
- Same PAN number. Only the date in the record changes.
- New e-PAN by email, and a new card by post if you paid for one. Your old card shows the old date, so keep the new one for KYC.
- New e-PAN password. Open the new e-PAN PDF with your corrected date of birth.
- Banks and investments don't update by themselves. Give them the new card or e-PAN if they hold the old date.
If your PAN and Aadhaar weren't linked because of the date, link them now. The dates must match exactly first.
- Correction done: the new e-PAN shows the corrected date
- Does the date now match Aadhaar exactly? No: correct the record that is still wrong (Aadhaar first)
- Try PAN–Aadhaar linking again on the e-Filing portal
- Pay the ₹1,000 late fee if the portal asks for it
- Linked: an inoperative PAN becomes operative again within 30 days
For the linking steps, see how to link PAN with Aadhaar. If linking still fails, or you paid the fee and nothing happened, see PAN–Aadhaar linking problems.
How does a company correct its date of incorporation?
Companies, LLPs, firms, trusts and other entities use Form CR-02, not CR-01. The date on their PAN is the date of incorporation, agreement or formation. Give the document that proves it, such as the Certificate of Incorporation, partnership deed or trust deed. A director, partner, trustee or other authorised person signs. More on the forms: PAN forms for individuals and entities.
What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?
| Your situation | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| PAN–Aadhaar linking fails with a mismatch message | Date of birth or gender differs between PAN and Aadhaar | Use the finder to decide which record is wrong. Fix it, then link again. |
| You gave only Aadhaar as DOB proof | Aadhaar isn't accepted for date of birth since 1 April 2026 | Add a birth certificate, Class 10 certificate, passport or another listed proof. |
| Your DOB proof shows yet another date | Your documents disagree with each other | Use the strongest proof, usually the birth certificate. Correct the other documents to match it over time. |
| Child born after 1 Oct 2023, no birth certificate | Only a birth certificate is listed for these children | Get it from the municipal office or Registrar of Births and Deaths, then apply. |
| e-PAN PDF won't open | The password is the date in the PAN record, which may differ from your real date | Try the date printed on your PAN card. After correction, use the corrected date. Our e-PAN password helper shows the format. |
| e-Sign OTP doesn't arrive | The mobile linked to Aadhaar is old or inactive | Choose the physical route, or update your Aadhaar mobile number first. |
| Status says documents not received | Posted papers are late or missing | Check the courier tracking. Papers must reach Protean within 15 days. |
| Aadhaar date is wrong and the update limit is used up | UIDAI's normal process won't allow another change | UIDAI suggests raising a grievance or visiting a regional office with strong documents. See how to raise an Aadhaar complaint. Don't change PAN to the wrong date. |
Correcting your PAN date of birth from abroad
- Indian citizens living abroad use CR-01 online. Your Indian passport proves identity, address and date of birth.
- The Income Tax Department lists CR-01 for all individuals, but a Protean article says foreign citizens use Form 95 for change requests too. Check which form the portal offers you before you apply.
- A new card posted to a foreign address costs ₹1,017 (₹1,011 paperless). e-PAN only costs ₹72 (₹66 paperless) and arrives by email.
- e-Sign needs an Aadhaar OTP. If you have no Aadhaar or can't receive the OTP abroad, choose the physical route and post your papers.
- Non-residents are exempt from PAN–Aadhaar linking, but a matching date still helps with Indian banks and KYC. PAN for NRIs and foreign citizens →
Region not right?
"New PAN with your Aadhaar date" offers
- Some agents offer to make a "fresh PAN" with a different date of birth. That is a second PAN. Holding more than one PAN is not allowed. Your Assessing Officer (AO, your tax officer) may impose a ₹10,000 penalty under section 467 of the Income-tax Act, 2025.
- The only proper fix is a CR-01 correction on your existing PAN. If you already have two PANs, surrender one. How to surrender a duplicate PAN →
- Never use a fake birth certificate or a bought affidavit. A false document can get your request rejected and cause legal trouble.
- Treat any call or message asking for an OTP as a red flag. An e-Sign OTP signs documents in your name.
- Apply only on proteantech.in or utiitsl.com, or at their PAN centres. Lost money? Call the cybercrime helpline 1930. PAN fraud guide →
Frequently asked questions
Can I correct my date of birth in PAN using only Aadhaar?
No. Since 1 April 2026, Aadhaar is not accepted as date-of-birth proof for PAN, even in Aadhaar e-KYC applications. Use a birth certificate, Class 10 certificate, passport, driving licence, voter ID or another listed proof.
Which form do I use to change the date of birth in PAN?
Individuals use Form CR-01. Companies, firms, trusts and other entities use CR-02. The old change request form was discontinued after 31 March 2026.
How much does it cost to correct the date of birth?
On Protean, ₹107 with a new printed card in India, or ₹72 for e-PAN only. Paperless requests cost ₹101 and ₹66. A card posted abroad costs ₹1,017.
Will my PAN number change after the correction?
No. The PAN number stays the same. Only the date of birth in the record changes, and you get a new e-PAN and card if you chose one.
My PAN and Aadhaar dates are different. Which should I change?
Change the one that is wrong. Check your birth certificate or Class 10 certificate. If PAN is wrong, file CR-01. If Aadhaar is wrong, update Aadhaar through UIDAI instead.
Can PAN and Aadhaar be linked if only the date of birth is different?
No. UIDAI says the date of birth and gender must be exactly the same in both. Correct the wrong record first, then link again.
I have no birth certificate or school certificate. What can I use?
If you were born before 1 October 2023, you can use a passport, driving licence, voter ID, pension payment order, marriage certificate, government photo ID or an affidavit sworn before a Magistrate stating your date of birth.
Can I correct my name and date of birth in one application?
Yes. One CR-01 can change several fields; tick each one. Give proof for each change. The portals charge per request, not per field, as far as we can see.
What is the e-PAN password after the correction?
Protean says the e-PAN PDF password is your date of birth. After correction, use the corrected date, usually as eight digits in DDMMYYYY form.
Can I get a new PAN with the correct date instead?
No. A new PAN would be a second PAN, which is not allowed. Correct your existing PAN with CR-01. If you already have two, surrender the extra one.
Bottom line
First find out which record is wrong. If it's PAN, file CR-01 with a date-of-birth proof that isn't Aadhaar, and pay ₹66–₹107. If it's Aadhaar, fix Aadhaar instead. Then link PAN and Aadhaar again. For help, call Protean on 020-27218080 or UTIITSL on 033-40802999.
