Which ways can you contact UIDAI?

UIDAI, the government body that runs Aadhaar, offers several help channels. Pick the one that fits your problem. Email and the online complaint give you a written record, which helps if you need to escalate later.

How do you reach a person on 1947?

1947 has two parts. An automated voice line (IVRS) answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Agents, real people, answer only at these times:

DayAgent hours
Monday to Saturday7:00 am – 11:00 pm
Sunday8:00 am – 5:00 pm
26 January, 15 August, 2 OctoberClosed

Languages: Hindi, English, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi and Odia.

Calling 1947, step by step
  1. Keep your URN or SRN, earlier ticket numbers and dates ready
  2. Is it agent time (Mon–Sat 7am–11pm, Sun 8am–5pm)?No: only the automated line answers. Call later, or complain in writing
  3. Call 1947 and explain the problem in one or two sentences
  4. The agent takes your query; write down any ticket number
  5. Not solved in 30 days? Escalate
  1. Keep your details ready

Have the number on your centre slip (URN) or your SRN (for online requests), the date you applied and any earlier ticket or complaint numbers. If it is about a centre, note its name and address.

Never tell anyone your OTP on a call, even if the caller says they are from UIDAI.

  2. Call during agent hours

Outside agent hours, and on 26 January, 15 August and 2 October, only the automated line answers. Call within the hours above if you need to talk to a person.

  3. Write down the ticket number

Note the date, time and any ticket number you are given. You need them to follow up or escalate.

You'll know it worked when you have a ticket or complaint number written down.

  4. Follow up in writing if needed

If nothing changes, file a complaint on myAadhaar or email [email protected]. A written trail makes the later steps stronger.

Which SMS services can you use with 1947?

You can send commands to 1947 by SMS, with no app or internet. Send them from the mobile registered with your Aadhaar. GVID, RVID and GETOTP are one SMS each. Every lock or unlock takes two SMS: first GETOTP, then the command with the 6-digit OTP.

A two-SMS command to 1947
  1. Is the SIM registered with your Aadhaar in your phone? No: SMS won't work. Update your mobile at an Aadhaar centre first
  2. Send GETOTP + last 4 digits of Aadhaar (or last 6 of VID) to 1947
  3. A 6-digit OTP arrives by SMS
  4. Send the command + the same digits + the OTP to 1947
  5. Lock or unlock done. No reply at all? Contact your mobile operator
  • VID first: you can't lock your Aadhaar (UID) without a 16-digit VID made beforehand, and unlocking works only with the VID. Save your latest VID before you lock.
  • If the lock SMS fails: LOCKUID with the last 4 digits of Aadhaar is UIDAI's official format, but our team has had the lock SMS fail. If 1947 replies with an error or nothing, don't keep retrying: lock on UIDAI's website or in the Aadhaar App, or call 1947.
  • Biometric commands don't work while your Aadhaar (UID) is locked. Unlock the UID first.
  • Two family members on one mobile: if their Aadhaar numbers end in the same 4 digits, use the last 8 digits in SMS 2. If their VIDs end in the same 6 digits, use the last 10.
  • No reply from 1947? Check you sent it from the registered SIM. If it still fails, contact your mobile operator.

New VID: GVID 1234. Current VID: RVID 1234. Lock Aadhaar (save a VID first): GETOTP 1234, then LOCKUID 1234 123456. Unlock Aadhaar: GETOTP 654321, then UNLOCKUID 654321 123456 (last 6 digits of VID). Lock biometrics: GETOTP 1234, then ENABLEBIOLOCK 1234 123456; unlock with DISABLEBIOLOCK. Use your own digits and send each to 1947.

This works only on your phone. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Never type your full Aadhaar number into any website except uidai.gov.in.

Every lock option, including the website and the Aadhaar App, is in Lock Aadhaar and biometrics. Need only the SMS tool? Use the SMS command generator.

How do you raise a complaint and escalate it?

UIDAI's Citizen's Charter sets 30 days to resolve a grievance. Give each step that long before you move up. Quote the same URN, SRN or complaint number every time. The order of the steps below is our suggestion, not a UIDAI rule.

The complaint ladder
  1. Call 1947 or email [email protected]; quote your URN or SRN
  2. File a complaint on myAadhaar and keep the complaint number
  3. Still not solved after 30 days? No, it's solved: keep the numbers for your records
  4. Write to the Regional Office for your state, with all earlier numbers
  5. Still stuck: file on CPGRAMS (pgportal.gov.in)
  6. Last step: an RTI to UIDAI on rtionline.gov.in
  7. RTI reply due within 30 days

5. RTIrtionline.gov.in → UIDAIAsk for the status of your request and the reason for the delay or rejection. Reply due within 30 days

What to put in a written complaint

  • Your URN or SRN, the date you applied and what you asked for.
  • What went wrong, in two or three short sentences.
  • Earlier ticket or complaint numbers, with dates.
  • Screenshots of any error or rejection message.
  • Never your OTP.

Some people's update status stayed "in progress" for 90 days or more, and their 1947 tickets went nowhere. They report turning to RTI. A clear written trail from the first steps makes RTI and CPGRAMS stronger. Full details: Aadhaar complaint and escalation. For update status and rejection reasons, see Update status and rejection fixes.

How do you complain if a centre overcharged you?

UIDAI says charges are the same at every centre. A demographic update (name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile, email) costs ₹75. A biometric update costs ₹125. A new Aadhaar and a child's mandatory biometric update at 5–7 and 15–17 are free, and a child's biometric update at 7–15 is free until 30 Sep 2027. Check your total with the fee calculator. People report being asked for ₹200 for a ₹75 update.

A December 2023 news report cites a Lok Sabha reply on this. If overcharging is proven, the operator is suspended and the registrar is fined ₹50,000. Complaints go to 1947 or [email protected]. People report that complaining is hard without the operator's ID, which many don't have, so collect details while you are still at the centre.

Reporting overcharging
  1. Check the official fee before you pay: ₹75 or ₹125
  2. Note the centre's name and address, the date and the amount asked
  3. Ask for the operator's ID and keep your URN slip
  4. Complain on 1947 or [email protected]
  5. Keep the complaint number; escalate after 30 days if needed

Where do you report Aadhaar fraud or lost money?

If money left your bank account through AePS (cash withdrawn at a micro-ATM with your Aadhaar number and fingerprint), act at once. No OTP is involved, so there is no OTP to warn you. Report within the "golden hour" if you can.

After money is taken
  1. Call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in straight away
  2. Lock your biometrics (Aadhaar App or SMS to 1947)
  3. Tell UIDAI on 1947 or [email protected]
  4. Keep every complaint number and record

1930 and cybercrime.gov.in are not UIDAI; they handle cyber fraud complaints. For misuse without money loss, use 1947 or email. Scam types, authentication history and the full steps: Aadhaar fraud and scams.

When should you go to an Aadhaar centre instead of calling?

  • Lost Aadhaar number or EID, and no mobile or email linked: online retrieval needs one of them. In our experience 1947 sends you to a centre in this case.
  • No registered mobile: OTPs and SMS commands won't work. Update your mobile at a centre (₹75); see Update your mobile number.
  • Name, date of birth, gender, photo or fingerprints: these changes need a centre.
  • Lifetime limit used up (name, date of birth, gender): apply at a centre, then email or post the URN slip and proofs to your Regional Office, or call 1947.

Living outside India?

Contacting UIDAI from abroad

  • Calling 1947 from abroad: the sources we checked don't say whether 1947 can be called from outside India. Don't rely on it.
  • Email [email protected] works from anywhere and gives you a written record. Include your URN or SRN and screenshots.
  • The SMS service needs your registered mobile. If that SIM doesn't get SMS abroad, it won't work, and OTPs won't reach you either.
  • CPGRAMS (pgportal.gov.in) is an online portal, if UIDAI's own channels don't help.

Fake "Aadhaar customer care" numbers

  • UIDAI's helpline is 1947. Other numbers shown as "Aadhaar customer care" in search results, social media posts or comments may be fake.
  • Real UIDAI websites end in uidai.gov.in. UIDAI's help email is [email protected].
  • Never tell an OTP to anyone on a call, even if they say they are from UIDAI or a bank.
  • Never install a screen-sharing app (AnyDesk-type) because a "helpline" asks you to.
  • Don't pay anyone on a call to "fix" your Aadhaar. Fees are paid at an Aadhaar centre or in UIDAI's own website or app.
