How to Change the Mobile Number in Aadhaar (Aadhar)?

The surest way is an Aadhaar centre: no document, your fingerprint or iris proves it's you, ₹75, done the same day. If you still get SMS on your old number, you can also try UIDAI's Aadhaar App (OTP, face scan, ₹75), but in our experience it works only about half the time. OTPs usually start on the new number within 1–2 days.

How do you check which mobile number is linked?

Do this first; you may not need an update at all. At our counter we use Verify Email/Mobile Number on myAadhaar.

Check the linked number
  1. Open myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in → Verify Email/Mobile Number
  2. Enter your Aadhaar number and the mobile number to check
  3. Type the captcha → an OTP comes to that number
  4. Confirmed as linked? No: update your mobile
  5. No update needed

Two more clues: UIDAI's Check Aadhaar Status page (Aadhaar number + captcha) may show the last 4 digits of the registered mobile, and the QR code on your e-Aadhaar holds a masked version of it.

Which way can you update your mobile number?

Answer up to three questions. You'll get the one route that works for you.

Old number lost or closedAadhaar centre (₹75)
No number ever linkedAadhaar centre (₹75)
Old number works + smartphoneAadhaar App (₹75), or a centre

How do you update your mobile at an Aadhaar centre?

Step 1 of 5

Find a centre

YouCentre / UIDAIPayment / slip

  1. Find a centre. Use the official locator. Booking an appointment is free and saves queue time.
  2. Tell the operator you want to update your mobile number. Give your Aadhaar and the new number. No document is needed.
  3. Give your fingerprint or iris. This confirms your identity, so you don't need the old number.
  4. Pay ₹75 and check the slip. The acknowledgement slip carries the number you use to track the request. Check the new number on it before leaving.
  5. Wait for OTPs on the new number. In our experience they start within 1–2 days; UIDAI allows up to 30.
Centre visit, start to finish
  1. Find a centre (optional: book a free appointment)
  2. Carry your Aadhaar and the new phone
  3. Operator enters the new number
  4. Fingerprint or iris matched? No: try other fingers or iris; ask about a biometric update
  5. Pay ₹75 → check the new number on the slip
  6. OTPs on the new number, usually within 1–2 days

Book at an Aadhaar Seva Kendrabookappointment.uidai.gov.in
  • Which centres can do it? Aadhaar Seva Kendras, bank and post office Aadhaar centres, and CSCs that run an authorised Aadhaar centre. A normal CSC or cyber café can only print, download and order PVC cards; it can't change your mobile.
  • Appointments: centres listed on UIDAI's booking site take online appointments; others are walk-in only.
  • Timings: Aadhaar Seva Kendras usually open on Sundays too and close on only about 10 holidays a year (26 January, 15 August, 2 October and a few more). The centre we visit works 9:30 am–1 pm and 2–5:30 pm; don't arrive at lunchtime.
Important

Read the slip before you walk away. A wrong digit means paying ₹75 again.

How do you update your mobile in the Aadhaar App?

Only if your current linked number still receives SMS. In our experience the app succeeds in roughly half of the cases; the face scan is the usual reason it fails. More on the new Aadhaar App.

Step 1 of 6

Open the Aadhaar App and choose Update mobile number

YouUIDAIOTP / payment

  1. Open the Aadhaar App and choose Update mobile number. Use UIDAI's official Aadhaar App. mAadhaar has been removed from the Play Store.
  2. Type the new mobile number and request the OTP. Check every digit before you continue.
  3. Enter the 6-digit OTP(s). One OTP comes to the new number. If a different number is linked in the app, the current number gets one too.
  4. Complete the face scan. Good light, phone at eye level, face fully visible.
  5. Pay ₹75. Pay only inside the official app.
  6. Save your SRN and track it. UIDAI says app updates can take up to 30 days. Until then, OTPs still go to the old number.
The app route and where it fails
  1. Aadhaar App → Update mobile number → type the new number
  2. OTPs received on the new (and current) number? No: use a centre
  3. Face scan passed?Failed twice: use a centre
  4. Pay ₹75 in the app
  5. Screenshot the SRN
  6. New number active, within up to 30 days
  1. Open UIDAI's Aadhaar App

Install it only from the official store listing published by UIDAI. Register with your Aadhaar, OTP and face scan if you haven't yet.

  2. Choose Update mobile number and enter the new number

If the option is missing: update the app to the latest version and look under Services.

  3. Enter the OTPs

The new number always gets an OTP. If the number linked in the app is different, that number gets one too.

If you can't get the OTP on the old number: the app route won't work. Use a centre.

  4. Complete face authentication

If it keeps failing: try daylight, remove glasses, keep still. If your Aadhaar photo is very old (for example taken as a child), a centre is easier.

  5. Pay ₹75 and save the SRN

You'll know it worked when you see a Service Request Number (SRN). Screenshot it.

Can a postman update your mobile at home?

Partly. India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) lists Aadhaar mobile update for ₹75 at selected post offices, and free child enrolment at a few. In our team's experience IPPB postmen also come to the door for mobile updates. IPPB's own page does not list the children's mandatory biometric update. 155299 is IPPB's general contact line, not a booking line. More on Aadhaar services at home (IPPB).

Tip

In our experience booking is unreliable: after a request the postman often doesn't come, or comes late. If you need it soon, a centre is faster.

Warning

Anyone charging more than ₹75 for a mobile update is overcharging. Complain on 1947 or [email protected]. News reports of a 2023 government reply say that, if proven, the operator is suspended and the registrar fined ₹50,000. Old rates like ₹50 or ₹100 seen in old FAQs are outdated.

Yes. In the Aadhaar App, email update is free until 31 December 2026 (normally ₹75). At a centre it's ₹75 on its own, or free when done with a biometric update. In our experience a linked email also lets you recover a lost Aadhaar number with your name and email.

Living outside India?

Updating your Aadhaar mobile from abroad

  • If your Indian number still receives SMS (roaming), the Aadhaar App route may work from abroad.
  • If the Indian SIM is closed, you need an Aadhaar centre during your next India visit. Book an appointment before you travel; it's free.
  • Aadhaar OTPs are sent to Indian mobile numbers. Keep one Indian number active if you use Aadhaar services often.

Warning

Mobile-update scams we see

  • Fake links by SMS or WhatsApp promising "update your Aadhaar mobile from home". Use only the official app or a centre. More on Aadhaar fraud and scams.
  • Calls asking for your OTP or Aadhaar number ("your Aadhaar will be blocked"). Hang up. UIDAI never asks for an OTP on a call.
  • Fake apps or screen-sharing apps (AnyDesk-type) that a caller asks you to install. Never install them.

₹75, at a centre or in the app. It costs nothing extra if done together with a biometric update (₹125).

No. Banks and UPI use the number registered with the bank. Update it there separately.

Can I update my mobile at a CSC or cyber café?

Only at a CSC that runs an authorised Aadhaar centre. A normal CSC or cyber café can print, download and order PVC cards, but can't change your mobile.

No. mAadhaar has been removed from the Play Store. Use UIDAI's new Aadhaar App.

Bottom line

Keep a working mobile on your Aadhaar; almost every Aadhaar service depends on its OTP. One centre visit, no documents and ₹75 fixes it, usually with OTPs on the new number within a day or two. For help, UIDAI's free helpline is 1947.
