Used up your chances? UIDAI has an exception route:

Exception route after the limit
  1. Apply for the update at an Aadhaar centre anyway (they must accept it)
  2. If it is rejected because the limit is used up, keep the slip with its number (URN)
  3. Email or post the slip and your proofs to the UIDAI Regional Office (or [email protected]), asking for an "exception update", or call 1947
  4. The Regional Office checks your case
  5. If approved, UIDAI's tech centre reprocesses it (no fixed timeline)

  • Timings: Aadhaar Seva Kendras usually open on Sundays too and close on only about 10 holidays a year (26 January, 15 August, 2 October and a few more). UIDAI lists 9:30 am–5:30 pm; the centre we visit closes for lunch from 1 to 2 pm. What to carry and expect: Aadhaar centres.

What happens after you apply?

What about children, the 10-year update and home service?

  • Children: biometrics must be updated at 5 and at 15. Both are free; between 7 and 15 the update is also free until 30 September 2027. If it's not done after age 7, the Aadhaar may be deactivated, and exams like NEET or JEE can get stuck. Child biometric update · child update due-date calculator
  • 10-year document update: UIDAI asks holders to refresh their proof of identity and address at least once every 10 years. Skipping it doesn't deactivate Aadhaar, but some KYC can get stuck. Guide
  • Home service: can be arranged for eligible senior citizens, disabled and bedridden people; in our experience it may need prior permission from the UIDAI Regional Office, and the full fee applies. Elderly and disabled
  • IPPB postman at home: IPPB lists mobile update (₹75) at selected post offices and child enrolment at a few; our team has also seen children's biometric updates, which IPPB's site does not list. 155299 is IPPB's general contact line; in our experience doorstep bookings are unreliable. Updating Aadhaar from abroad

  • Address and email updates online work if your registered Indian mobile still receives SMS.
  • Photo, fingerprints, name, DOB and gender need an Aadhaar centre in India; there's no embassy route.
  • Book an appointment before your trip; it's free. More: Aadhaar for NRIs and OCI.

Warning

Update scams

  • "Update your Aadhaar from home" links on WhatsApp or SMS are fake. Use only uidai.gov.in, the official Aadhaar App or a centre.
  • UIDAI never calls for your OTP. Never install screen-sharing apps because a caller asks.
  • News like "all updates online from now on" has been wrong before. Check this page or uidai.gov.in. More tricks to watch for: Aadhaar fraud and scams.
