Is Your Aadhaar (Aadhar) Deactivated? Reasons and How to Reactivate It
Check your number on UIDAI's Check Aadhaar Validity page first. If it is deactivated, the fix depends on the reason. A missed child biometric update is done at an Aadhaar centre. A wrong death record or a date-of-birth age-fraud flag goes to a UIDAI Regional (or State) office. A locked Aadhaar or an inoperative PAN is a different problem with its own fix.

How do you check if your Aadhaar is deactivated?
UIDAI has an online service called Check Aadhaar Validity (the page itself is headed "Check Aadhaar Status"). You enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number and a captcha, and it shows whether the number is valid and active, that is, not deactivated or omitted. Start there before you visit any office. Then work out the reason, because each reason has a different fix.
- Open UIDAI's Check Aadhaar Validity page and check your number
- Does the check show a problem with your number? No: it is not deactivated. It may be locked, or a PAN or KYC issue
- Do you know the reason (death record, missed child update, date of birth, duplicate)? No: ask 1947 or file a complaint to learn the reason
- Find your reason in the reason → fix table
- Is it only a child's missed biometric update? No: see where your case is handled (usually a UIDAI Regional or State office)
- Get the biometric update done at an Aadhaar centre
- Check validity again once the request is processed
-
Open the Check Aadhaar Validity page
Use UIDAI's own link below. It runs on myaadhaarbeta.uidai.gov.in, a UIDAI site. Don't use look-alike sites from SMS or WhatsApp links.
-
Check your Aadhaar number
Enter the 12-digit number and the captcha, then press Validate Aadhaar Number. For a valid number the result may also show the age band, gender, state and the last 4 digits of the registered mobile. We have not recorded the exact wording for a deactivated number, so read the result carefully.
You'll know it's fine when the page confirms the number as valid. Then the trouble is somewhere else: see locked, PAN or KYC.
-
Find the reason
Think about what changed. Was a pension or ration stopped? Did you get an SMS about your child's biometric update? Was a date-of-birth update rejected? Match it in the reason → fix table. If you can't tell, call 1947 and ask.
For other ways to check an Aadhaar, see Verify an Aadhaar.
Is your Aadhaar deactivated, locked, or is it your PAN?
Many people say "my Aadhaar is deactivated" when something else is wrong. The fixes are very different, so first find out which one you have.
| What you see | What it really is |
|---|---|
| Fingerprint fails with error 330 | Biometric lock (unlock) |
| All checks fail after you locked Aadhaar | UID lock (unlock with VID) |
| PAN shown as inoperative | PAN not linked (link PAN) |
| Pension or ration stopped, recorded as dead | Possible deactivation (steps) |
| SMS about child's biometric update | Deactivation risk (steps) |
| Situation | Is Aadhaar deactivated? | What you notice | The fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deactivated by UIDAI | Yes | The validity check shows a problem; services that depend on Aadhaar can stop | Depends on the reason: reason → fix table |
| Aadhaar number (UID) locked by you | No | All authentication fails: fingerprint, iris, face, OTP and demographic. Bank e-KYC fails | Unlock with your latest 16-digit VID (how) |
| Biometrics locked by you | No | Fingerprint, iris and face checks fail with error 330 | Unlock in the Aadhaar App or by SMS, then lock again |
| PAN inoperative | No | No tax refunds, higher TDS and TCS | Link PAN with Aadhaar (₹1,000 late fee). See Link Aadhaar with PAN |
| 10-year document update not done | No | In our experience, some services or KYC can get stuck | Update your identity and address proofs: free on myAadhaar until 14 June 2027, ₹75 at a centre |
| Ration card member on hold after missed e-KYC | No | In our experience the member or card is put on hold or made inactive, not deleted | Free e-KYC at the ration shop's ePoS machine. States set their own deadlines. See link Aadhaar with ration card |
Why does UIDAI deactivate an Aadhaar, and what fixes each reason?
UIDAI's regulations (numbers 27 and 28) set out when an Aadhaar can be deactivated or omitted. Below are those reasons, plus deactivation after a death record, and what to do for each.
| Reason | Who it hits | What to do | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recorded as deceased | People who died, and some living people matched by mistake | If alive: Annexure application, biometrics within 2 weeks, decision within 30 days (steps) | UIDAI Regional or State office |
| Child's mandatory biometric update (MBU) missed | Children who didn't update biometrics at age 5; after age 7 the Aadhaar "may" be deactivated | Biometric update (steps) | Aadhaar centre |
| Age fraud in date of birth | Enrolled as under 5 but actually older, or as a minor but actually 18+ | Full biometric update, online-verifiable birth certificate, Annexure-III affidavit (steps) | UIDAI Regional Office |
| Duplicate Aadhaar | One person with more than one Aadhaar | As reported, the earliest Aadhaar with biometrics is kept (details) | Ask 1947 if unclear |
| Biometric exception misused, or enrolled at 5+ without biometrics | Enrolments where biometrics were skipped | Our sources list no self-service fix. Ask the Regional Office what it needs (details) | UIDAI Regional Office |
Processing times: only the "wrongly marked dead" route has published timelines (2 weeks and 30 days). For the other routes our sources give no timeline. UIDAI's charter aims to resolve grievances within 30 days.
What if you are alive but your Aadhaar was deactivated as "dead"?
UIDAI deactivates the Aadhaar of people who have died. It had deactivated over 2 crore numbers by Nov 2025 and about 2.5 crore by Feb 2026, as reported. The death data comes from the Registrar General of India, states, the public distribution system (PDS) and the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP). News reports say the match needs a 90% name match and a 100% gender match.
Mistakes happen. Living people have reportedly been marked dead in Karnataka, Odisha and Rajasthan, and their pension and ration stopped. UIDAI's Circular 02/2025 (7 Jul 2025) sets out how to fix it.
- Fill in the application in the Annexure format
- Submit it to the UIDAI Regional or State office
- Your biometrics are captured within 2 weeks
- Decision received within 30 days? No: escalate with a complaint
- Decision made; the Registrar of Births & Deaths is informed
-
Get the Annexure application format
The circular asks for an application in its Annexure format. Ask the Regional or State office, or 1947, for the format.
-
Submit it to the Regional or State office
Keep a copy and any receipt or reference number. Note the date you applied.
-
Give your biometrics
Your biometrics are to be captured within 2 weeks.
-
Wait for the decision
A decision is due within 30 days. The Registrar of Births & Deaths is then informed.
You'll know it worked when the validity check no longer shows a problem. Then ask your pension office and ration shop to restart payments.
No decision after 30 days? Escalate with your application date and reference.
Reporting the death of a family member is a separate process. UIDAI launched it on myAadhaar in June 2025; it worked in 25 states and union territories connected to the Civil Registration System as of Nov 2025. See Aadhaar of a deceased person.
What if your child's mandatory biometric update (MBU) was missed?
Children give fresh fingerprints, iris scans and a photo at age 5 (MBU-1) and age 15 (MBU-2). If the first update is not done after age 7, the Aadhaar "may be deactivated". UIDAI sends SMS reminders, so watch the mobile linked to your child's Aadhaar. People report that a missed update can also block NEET, JEE, CUET registration and scholarships.
- SMS reminder from UIDAI, or the child is 7+ with no update since age 5
- Take the child and the child's Aadhaar to an Aadhaar centre
- Fingerprints, iris and photo are captured
- Fee: free at ages 5–7 and 15–17, and at 7–15 until 30 Sep 2027; otherwise ₹125
- Keep the slip and track the update with the number on it
- Check validity once the update is processed
-
Go to an Aadhaar centre with the child
The update needs the child in person. An MBU must be done as a stand-alone transaction.
-
Pay the right fee
The MBU is free at ages 5–7 and 15–17. A biometric update at ages 7–15 is also free until 30 Sep 2027; after that, and at other ages, it costs ₹125. Find the due dates with the child update due-date calculator.
-
Track the update with the number on the slip
Keep the acknowledgement slip and track the update with the number printed on it. Our sources don't say how soon a deactivated Aadhaar becomes active again after the update. Check validity after the update is processed, and call 1947 if it still shows a problem.
For ages, fees and documents, see Child biometric update (5 & 15).
What if your date of birth was flagged for age fraud?
Under UIDAI's date-of-birth SOP (24 Dec 2025), "age fraud" means someone was enrolled as 0–5 but was actually older than 5, or enrolled as a minor but was actually 18 or older. Then the DOB update is rejected and the Aadhaar may be deactivated. Reactivation goes through the UIDAI Regional Office.
- DOB update rejected for age fraud; Aadhaar may be deactivated
- Do you have a birth certificate that can be verified online? No: you need one before you apply
- Prepare the Annexure-III affidavit
- Apply through the UIDAI Regional Office
- Give a full biometric update
- The Regional Office decides on reactivation
- You need all three: a full biometric update, a birth certificate that can be verified online, and the Annexure-III affidavit.
- Timeline: our sources give no timeline for this route.
- DOB changes are once in a lifetime. Get the date right the first time. See Change date of birth.
What about duplicate Aadhaar and biometric-exception cases?
- Two Aadhaar numbers for one person: enrol only once. Under the 2025 amendment, as reported, the earliest Aadhaar with biometrics is kept where duplicates exist. Use that number. If you don't know which one survived, check both on the validity page.
- Biometric exception misused, or enrolled at 5+ without biometrics: these are deactivation reasons in UIDAI's regulations. Our sources list no self-service fix. Ask the Regional Office, through 1947 or a complaint, what it needs from you.
- Twins with mixed-up biometrics: in our experience only the UIDAI Regional Office can fix this, not a centre.
Locked your Aadhaar yourself? How do you unlock it?
A lock is something you switch on to protect your Aadhaar. It is not deactivation. There are two kinds:
- UID lock blocks all authentication. Unlocking needs your latest 16-digit VID (Virtual ID), not your Aadhaar number.
- Biometric lock blocks fingerprint, iris and face checks. A blocked check shows error 330. Unlock it in the Aadhaar App or by SMS.
- Do you have your latest 16-digit VID?No: send
RVID+ last 4 digits of Aadhaar to 1947 - From your registered mobile, send
GETOTP+ last 6 digits of the VID - A 6-digit OTP arrives by SMS
- Send
UNLOCKUID+ last 6 digits of the VID + OTP - Your Aadhaar number is unlocked
Unlock UID: send GETOTP 876543, then UNLOCKUID 876543 123456 (last 6 digits of your VID, then the OTP). Forgot the VID: RVID 1234 (last 4 digits of Aadhaar). Unlock biometrics: GETOTP 1234, then DISABLEBIOLOCK 1234 123456. Send each to 1947.
This works only on your phone. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Never type your full Aadhaar number into any website except uidai.gov.in.
You can also unlock on UIDAI's website (Aadhaar unlock) with your latest VID, a captcha and an OTP. For a temporary biometric unlock, UIDAI's SMS command is UNLOCKBIO (build it with our SMS generator); biometrics can also be unlocked online or in the Aadhaar App. No reply to your SMS? Contact your mobile operator. Full details: Lock Aadhaar & biometrics, VID.
Should you go to an Aadhaar centre or a Regional Office?
| Your case | Where it is handled |
|---|---|
| Child's missed biometric update; any biometric update | Aadhaar centre |
| 10-year document update | myAadhaar (free until 14 June 2027) or a centre (₹75) |
| Alive but marked dead | UIDAI Regional or State office |
| Age-fraud flag on date of birth | UIDAI Regional Office |
| Twins or biometric mix-up | UIDAI Regional Office only |
| Duplicate or biometric-exception case | Ask 1947 or the UIDAI Regional Office (our sources give no set route) |
UIDAI Regional Offices: Bengaluru, Chandigarh, New Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Mumbai and Ranchi, plus the Tech Centre in Bengaluru. Ask 1947 which office covers your state.
To reach UIDAI or escalate:
- Call 1947. The automated line runs 24x7; agents work Mon–Sat 7am–11pm and Sun 8am–5pm. See UIDAI helpline 1947.
- Email [email protected], or file a complaint on myAadhaar.
- Still stuck? Escalate on CPGRAMS (pgportal.gov.in), or file an RTI to UIDAI (fee ₹10, BPL applicants exempt; reply within 30 days). See Aadhaar complaint & escalation.
What problems come up, and how do you fix them?
| Your situation | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Validity check shows a problem, no reason given | It may have been deactivated for one of the reasons above | Call 1947 or file a complaint and ask the reason. Note the ticket number |
| Pension or ration stopped; told you are "dead" | Your Aadhaar was probably matched to a death record | Apply to the Regional or State office (steps) |
| No decision 30 days after applying | The deadline in Circular 02/2025 has passed | Complain with your application date; escalate on CPGRAMS (how) |
| SMS reminder about your child's biometric update | The biometric update at age 5 is overdue | Biometric update at a centre (steps) |
| DOB update rejected for age | Age-fraud flag; Aadhaar may be deactivated | Regional Office route (steps) |
| Twins' fingerprints mixed up | Biometrics saved against the wrong child | Only the Regional Office can fix it |
| You have two Aadhaar numbers | A duplicate; one may be deactivated | As reported, the earliest one with biometrics is kept; use that one (details) |
| Fingerprint fails with error 330 | Biometric lock is on | Unlock, finish the check, lock again (how) |
| Every check fails after you locked Aadhaar | UID lock is on | Unlock with your latest VID (how) |
| PAN shown as inoperative | PAN not linked with Aadhaar | Link PAN with Aadhaar (PAN guide) |
| A caller says your Aadhaar will be blocked | A scam | Hang up; never share an OTP (why) |
A deactivated Aadhaar when you live abroad
- The Check Aadhaar Validity page is online, so you can check from anywhere.
- Most reactivation routes need your biometrics. A biometric update needs a visit to India; there is no embassy or online route.
- Email [email protected] works from abroad. Ask what to prepare before you travel.
- PAN worries? Non-residents are exempt from PAN–Aadhaar linking. See Link Aadhaar with PAN.
- No OTP on your registered SIM abroad is a mobile problem, not deactivation.
Region not right?
"Your Aadhaar will be blocked" scams
- A common scam we see: a caller says your Aadhaar will be blocked or deactivated, then asks for your OTP or Aadhaar number. Hang up.
- Real reactivation goes through a UIDAI office with your biometrics, or a centre for a child's update. No caller can "reactivate" it for an OTP or a fee.
- Ignore SMS or WhatsApp links offering a fix "from home", and never install a screen-sharing app because someone asks.
- Money gone? Call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in at once.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if my Aadhaar card is deactivated?
Use UIDAI's Check Aadhaar Validity page on myaadhaarbeta.uidai.gov.in. If it shows a problem and you don't know why, call 1947 or file a complaint on myAadhaar.
Will my Aadhaar be deactivated if I don't do the 10-year document update?
In our experience, no. Some services or KYC can get stuck until you update your documents. The update is free on myAadhaar until 14 June 2027 and ₹75 at a centre.
Will my child's Aadhaar be deactivated if the biometric update isn't done?
It may be. If the update due at age 5 is not done after age 7, UIDAI says the Aadhaar may be deactivated, and it sends SMS reminders. Get it done at an Aadhaar centre.
A living person's Aadhaar was marked dead. What should we do?
Apply in the Annexure format to the UIDAI Regional or State office (Circular 02/2025). Biometrics are captured within 2 weeks, and a decision is due within 30 days.
How long does reactivation take?
For a wrong death record, a decision is due within 30 days of applying. For the other reasons, our sources give no timeline.
Is a locked Aadhaar the same as a deactivated one?
No. You switch a lock on yourself and can switch it off with your latest VID (UID lock) or in the app or by SMS (biometric lock). Deactivation is done by UIDAI.
My PAN is inoperative. Is my Aadhaar deactivated?
No. An inoperative PAN means it isn't linked with Aadhaar. Your Aadhaar still works. Link the two after paying the ₹1,000 fee; check the result with PAN–Aadhaar link status.
Will my deactivated Aadhaar number be given to someone else?
No. Aadhaar numbers are never reused.
Can an Aadhaar centre reactivate my Aadhaar?
A centre does the biometric update for a child's missed update. A wrong death record, an age-fraud flag and a twins' biometric mix-up go to the UIDAI Regional Office.
I have two Aadhaar numbers. Which one stays?
As reported under the 2025 amendment, the earliest Aadhaar with biometrics is kept. Use that one and don't enrol again.
Can I report a family member's death online?
Only in states linked to the Civil Registration System. On myAadhaar, the family member logs in and enters the deceased's Aadhaar number and death registration number.
Bottom line
Check validity first, then match the reason. A child's missed update is fixed at a centre; a wrong death record or an age-fraud flag goes to a UIDAI Regional (or State) office. If it's only a lock or an inoperative PAN, your Aadhaar is not deactivated. For help, UIDAI's free helpline is 1947.
