Which ways can you check the link status?
The Income Tax e-Filing portal is the official place to check. It offers two routes for the link itself, plus a separate check for the PAN's status.
| Way | What you need | What it tells you | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Link Aadhaar Status, without login | PAN and Aadhaar number | Linked, pending or not linked | Anyone, including for a family member |
| My Profile, after login | e-Filing user ID and password | Aadhaar number shown if linked | People who already file returns online |
| Verify Your PAN | PAN, full name, date of birth, a mobile number for OTP | The PAN's status (information only) | Checking if a PAN is usable |
| SMS (reported) | Mobile phone, PAN and Aadhaar number | Not confirmed on a current official page | Backup only |
Haven't linked yet? This page only covers checking. For the full linking process and the ₹1,000 fee, see how to link PAN with Aadhaar.
How do you check the status without logging in?
This is the quickest route. It needs no account, no OTP and no payment.
- Open incometax.gov.in
- Under Quick Links, click Link Aadhaar Status
- Do you have both the PAN and the 12-digit Aadhaar number? No: find your PAN first (find your PAN)
- The portal checks the details and shows a message
- You see linked, pending or not linked
-
Open the e-Filing home page
Type incometax.gov.in in your browser yourself. Don't follow links from messages. The address should start with https and end in .gov.in.
-
Click Link Aadhaar Status under Quick Links
The Quick Links list is on the home page. One official help page calls the option Link Aadhaar Status. The current e-Filing user manual calls it Link Aadhaar/View Status, followed by Continue in a View Status tile. Pick whichever label you see.
If you only see "Link Aadhaar": look for a View Status option on that page. Don't start a new link request just to see the status.
-
Enter the PAN and the Aadhaar number
Type the 10-character PAN (for example, the dummy ABCPK1234X) and the 12-digit Aadhaar number. Then click View Link Aadhaar Status.
If you get an error: check each character again. A zero typed as the letter O is a common slip.
-
Read the message on screen
The manual says a message about your link status appears after the details are validated. Match it with the results table below.
You'll know it worked when a status message appears on the same screen. Take a screenshot for your records.
How do you check the status after logging in?
If you have an e-Filing account, the status also sits in your profile.
- Log in to incometax.gov.in
- Open Link Aadhaar Status on the Dashboard, or My Profile → Link Aadhaar Status
- Is your Aadhaar number shown? No: the link is not complete (what to do)
- Aadhaar number shown: PAN and Aadhaar are linked
-
Log in with your user ID and password
Your user ID is usually your PAN. Logging in with Aadhaar as the user ID works only when PAN and Aadhaar are already linked.
If you can't log in: use the no-login route instead. It gives the same link status.
-
Open the link status from the Dashboard or My Profile
On the Dashboard, look for Link Aadhaar Status or Link Aadhaar. Or go to My Profile and find Link Aadhaar Status.
-
See whether your Aadhaar number is displayed
The official help page says: if Aadhaar is linked, the Aadhaar number is displayed. If it is not linked, "Link Aadhaar Status" is displayed instead.
You'll know it worked when your Aadhaar number appears in your profile.
What does each status result mean?
The official manual shows the messages as screenshots, so we describe them rather than quote them. Your screen may word them a little differently.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A message that the PAN is linked with the Aadhaar (or your Aadhaar number shows in My Profile) | The link is done | Nothing more for the link. If your PAN was inoperative, check it again after some days (see below). |
| Linking in progress, or request pending with UIDAI for validation | Your request reached UIDAI (the Aadhaar authority) and is still being checked | Check again later. Don't pay again or send a fresh request while it is pending. |
| Validation failed | UIDAI could not match the details, often name, date of birth or gender | The manual says to click Link Aadhaar on the status page and repeat the steps. Fix any mismatch first: linking problems. |
| A message that the PAN is not linked | No link request has gone through yet | Pay the ₹1,000 fee and submit a link request: link PAN with Aadhaar. If you are exempt, see below. |
| PAN linked with some other Aadhaar, or Aadhaar linked with another PAN | A wrong pairing exists in the records | The manual says to contact your Jurisdictional Assessing Officer (AO, your tax officer) to delink. Find your AO. |
Linked status does not always mean an operative PAN on the same day. Under the Income-tax Rules, 2026, an inoperative PAN becomes operative again within 30 days of the Aadhaar being intimated. Read inoperative PAN: effects and reactivation.
What does your status say, and what next?
Pick what you saw on the screen. The answer tells you the next step.
| Status shown | Next step |
|---|---|
| Linked, PAN working | Nothing more; keep a screenshot |
| Linked, but PAN inoperative | Wait up to 30 days, then check again |
| Pending with UIDAI / in progress | Check again after a few days; don't pay again |
| Validation failed | Fix the mismatch, then link again |
| Not linked, not exempt | Pay ₹1,000 and link |
| Not linked, exempt | Usually nothing to do |
| Linked with another PAN or Aadhaar | Contact your Assessing Officer |
| Error, no status | Re-check the numbers |
How do you check whether your PAN is operative?
The link status tells you about the link. It doesn't tell you whether the PAN is active. For that, use Verify Your PAN on the same portal. The user manual lists it as Verify PAN Status under Quick Links.
- Open incometax.gov.in → Quick Links → Verify Your PAN
- Enter PAN, full name, date of birth and a mobile number
- Did the 6-digit OTP arrive? No: click Resend OTP, or check the number you typed
- The portal shows the PAN status (for information only)
-
Open Verify Your PAN from Quick Links
No login is needed. You need a mobile phone that is with you.
-
Fill the PAN, name, date of birth and mobile number
Write the name exactly as on the PAN card. Then click Continue.
-
Enter the OTP and validate
The OTP is valid for 15 minutes, and you get 3 tries. Click Validate.
You'll know it worked when the PAN status appears on screen.
If it says details don't match: check the spelling of your name and your date of birth against the PAN card.
The official manual does not list the exact result messages. It says the result is for information only. Questions about the result go to your Jurisdictional Assessing Officer. More on this tool: verify a PAN online.
Can you check the link status by SMS?
An SMS check has been widely reported for years. You send this message to 567678 or 56161:
UIDPAN <12-digit Aadhaar> <10-digit PAN>
We could not find this on a current official Income Tax page, so we can't confirm it still works. Normal SMS charges may apply. Use the portal first and treat SMS as a backup.
Can you check the status for a parent, spouse or child?
Yes. The no-login check asks only for a PAN and an Aadhaar number. No OTP goes to the person's phone. So you can check for a family member if they give you both numbers.
- Ask first. Use their numbers only with their permission.
- For Verify Your PAN, you also need their full name and date of birth. The OTP goes to whichever mobile number you enter.
- To link for them, things change. Linking is a request made in their name and needs an OTP. Do it only with them present and agreeing.
- Elderly parents: people aged 80 or more are exempt from linking. A "not linked" result is usually fine for them (see below).
- Children: a child with a PAN may have no Aadhaar yet. See PAN card for minors.
What if you are exempt from linking?
The e-Filing FAQs say the linking requirement doesn't apply to:
- residents of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, and Meghalaya;
- non-residents under the Income-tax Act;
- people aged 80 or more;
- people who are not Indian citizens.
If you are exempt, the status check will most likely show not linked, because no link was made. That alone is not a problem. The FAQs say exempt individuals are not affected by the consequences of a PAN becoming inoperative.
The tax records may not always know you are exempt, though. For example, the records may still show you as a resident. If your PAN shows as inoperative, contact your Assessing Officer with proof. You can also choose to link; the ₹1,000 fee still applies if you do.
"I paid the ₹1,000 fee, so my PAN is linked." Paying the fee is only the first step. The e-Filing manual says you wait for the payment to be verified (it mentions 4–5 working days), then submit the link request and confirm it with an OTP. The status shows linked only after that request is validated.
What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?
| Your situation | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Status stays "pending with UIDAI" for a long time | UIDAI has not finished checking the request | Keep checking. If it doesn't change for a few weeks, call e-Filing on 1800 103 0025. |
| Paid the fee, status still says not linked | The link request was never submitted, or the payment isn't verified yet | The manual says payment can take 4–5 working days to show. Then submit the link request. Fee problems. |
| Validation failed | Name, date of birth or gender differ between PAN and Aadhaar | Compare the names with our name checker. Correct PAN (PAN correction) or Aadhaar (Aadhaar name or DOB fix), then link again. |
| PAN was made with an Aadhaar Enrolment ID, and status says not linked | The real 12-digit Aadhaar number was due by 31 Dec 2025; if not given, the PAN became inoperative from 1 Jan 2026 | Use Link Aadhaar with your 12-digit Aadhaar number. The portal shows whether a fee applies. |
| Shows linked with some other Aadhaar or PAN | Wrong pairing in the records | Contact your Jurisdictional Assessing Officer to delink. |
| Linked, but PAN still inoperative | Reactivation takes up to 30 days | Wait, then check with Verify Your PAN. Inoperative PAN. |
| Error: invalid PAN or Aadhaar | A typing mistake | Re-type slowly. Check 0 and O, 1 and I. |
| Exempt, but status says not linked | Normal: no link was made | Usually nothing to do. If the PAN shows inoperative, contact your Assessing Officer. |
| Don't remember the PAN | You need the PAN to check | Find it in old returns, bank papers or Form 16. Find your PAN. |
Link status for NRIs
- Non-residents don't have to link PAN with Aadhaar. A "not linked" result is expected if you never linked.
- Check that your PAN is operative. In 2023, many NRIs reported their PAN turned inoperative because the records still showed them as resident. Update your residential status with your Assessing Officer if this happens.
- No Aadhaar? You can't use the link status check, because it needs an Aadhaar number. Use Verify Your PAN instead.
- OTP from abroad: Verify Your PAN sends an OTP to the mobile number you enter. Use a number you can receive messages on.
- More for people abroad: PAN for NRIs and foreign citizens.

Fake "link status" sites and messages
- The official status check is free and asks for no OTP. A site asking for money or an OTP just to "show status" is not the official check.
- Check only on incometax.gov.in. Type the address yourself; don't tap links in SMS or WhatsApp messages.
- Treat any call or message asking for an OTP as a red flag. An Aadhaar OTP can be used to act in your name.
- Messages saying "your PAN will be blocked today, click here" are often scams. Check the status yourself instead.
- The linking fee is ₹1,000, paid through e-Pay Tax on the e-Filing portal. Checking the status costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a fee to check PAN–Aadhaar link status?
No. The status check on incometax.gov.in is free. The ₹1,000 fee applies only when you link, not when you check.
Do I need to log in to check the status?
No. Use Link Aadhaar Status under Quick Links on the home page with your PAN and Aadhaar number. If you have an account, you can also see it under My Profile after logging in.
Is an OTP needed to check the link status?
No. The no-login check asks only for the PAN and the Aadhaar number. An OTP is needed when you submit a link request, or when you use Verify Your PAN.
What does "pending with UIDAI" mean?
Your link request has reached UIDAI and is being checked. The official manual says to check the status later. Don't pay again or send a new request while it is pending.
My status says validation failed. What now?
Usually the name, date of birth or gender differ between PAN and Aadhaar. Fix the mismatch, then click Link Aadhaar on the status page and repeat the steps.
I linked today. When will the status change?
It may show as pending at first, while UIDAI checks the details. The official pages don't give a fixed time, so check again after a few days.
My PAN is linked. Is it operative now?
Not always on the same day. An inoperative PAN becomes operative again within 30 days of the Aadhaar being intimated. Check with Verify Your PAN.
Can I check the status of my father's PAN?
Yes, if he gives you his PAN and Aadhaar number. If he is 80 or older, he is exempt from linking, so "not linked" is usually fine.
Does the UIDPAN SMS still work?
It is widely reported: send UIDPAN, your Aadhaar number and your PAN to 567678 or 56161. We could not confirm it on a current official page, so use the portal first.
I'm exempt but the status says not linked. Is that a problem?
Usually not. Exempt people don't have to link and are not affected by the inoperative PAN rules. If your PAN shows inoperative anyway, contact your Assessing Officer with proof.
Bottom line
Check your link status for free on incometax.gov.in with just your PAN and Aadhaar number. Linked means done; pending means wait; validation failed means fix and retry; not linked means link, unless you are exempt. Then confirm your PAN is operative with Verify Your PAN. For help, call e-Filing on 1800 103 0025 or Protean on 020-27218080.
