What Is the PAN Card Customer Care Number?

There is no single PAN helpline. If you applied through Protean, call 020-27218080 (7am–11pm, all days). If you applied through UTIITSL, call 033-40802999 (9am–8pm, all days). Who should you call for which PAN problem?

PAN work is split between several bodies. Protean and UTIITSL take PAN applications for the Income Tax Department. The Department's e-Filing portal runs Instant e-PAN and PAN–Aadhaar linking. Officers at your local tax office handle cases that need a decision. Calling the wrong one wastes time, because each helpline usually sees only its own system.

Hours are as shown on the Income Tax e-Filing contact page and the UTIITSL website on 16 Oct 2026. The Department's older "Tax helpline" page shows shorter hours for some numbers, so call early if you can. The 080-69708080 number for Protean appears on the Income Tax Department's "Whom to contact" PAN page.

Important

You may see an "Aaykar Sampark Kendra" number on other websites. We could not find it on the Department's current contact pages, so we don't list it. Use the numbers above, which we checked on official pages.

Myth

"Pay the helpline a little extra and your PAN will come faster." The official PAN fees are fixed, such as ₹107 for a card and ₹72 for e-PAN only, and the Department's fee list has no fast-track charge. Paying a helpline or caller extra is not part of the official process. Anyone asking for extra money to "speed up" a PAN is not official.

What should you keep ready before you call?

Helpline staff can only look up your case with a reference number. Have it in front of you before you dial, with a pen to note what they say.

How do you raise and escalate a PAN complaint?

Start with the agency that handles your request. Move up only if it doesn't help. Each step below keeps a record you can show at the next step.

Raising and escalating a PAN complaint
  1. Find the right contact for your problem
  2. Keep your acknowledgement number, PAN and payment reference ready
  3. Call and note the date, time and any reference number
  4. Still not fixed after the call? No: you're done. Keep your reference safe
  5. Write in, then raise an e-Filing grievance or write to your AO, and wait for a reply
  6. Grievance answered; if not, file on CPGRAMS
  1. Find the right contact

Use the helpline table or the finder. Protean usually can't look up a UTIITSL application, and the e-Filing helpdesk usually can't look up either.

  2. Gather your reference numbers

See the checklist. Without an acknowledgement or coupon number, staff usually can't find your application.

  3. Call and take notes

Explain the problem in one or two sentences. Ask what will happen next and how long it may take. Note any reference number.

You'll know it worked when the status on the agency's tracking page changes, or the e-PAN or card reaches you.

If you can't get through: try early in the morning, try the second listed number, or skip to the written complaint.

  4. Put the complaint in writing

For Protean, use the Complaints/Queries link on its Customer Care page, or email [email protected]. For UTIITSL, use the Customer Feedback Corner on pan.utiitsl.com, or email [email protected]. Put your acknowledgement or coupon number in the subject line, and mention your earlier call.

Send one clear message, not many. Repeated emails on the same issue can make the thread harder to follow.

  5. Raise an e-Filing grievance or write to your AO

The e-Filing grievance system covers Instant e-PAN and e-Filing issues. Its AO category includes "PAN Status" and "PAN related application with AO". See the grievance steps. For cases that need an officer, write to your Assessing Officer.

You'll know it worked when you get a Grievance Acknowledgement Number. Use it to check progress under View Grievance.

  6. Escalate on CPGRAMS if still unresolved

CPGRAMS is the central government's public grievance portal at pgportal.gov.in. The Income Tax Department lists it on its Grievance & Support page. Attach your earlier references and replies.

How do you submit a grievance on the e-Filing portal?

These steps follow the e-Filing portal's official user manual. You can raise a grievance with or without an e-Filing account. The description must be at least 100 characters, and attaching documents is optional.

Submitting an e-Filing grievance
  1. Open incometax.gov.in and find Grievances under Contact Us
  2. Do you have an e-Filing login? No: give your name, email and mobile instead
  3. Enter the OTPs sent to your mobile and email
  4. Choose the department, category, Act and subcategory
  5. Describe the problem in at least 100 characters and submit
  6. Grievance Acknowledgement Number issued; track it under View Grievance
  1. Open the e-Filing portal

Go to incometax.gov.in. Scroll to the bottom and click Grievances under Contact Us.

  2. Log in, or continue without an account

With an account, log in and open Grievances → Submit Grievance on your dashboard. Without one, the manual says to select I do not have a PAN/TAN, then enter your name, email ID and mobile number.

  3. Verify with the two OTPs

Without login, OTPs go to both your mobile and your email. Enter them and click Submit. Type them only on the portal itself.

  4. Pick the right category

Select the department, category, applicable Act and subcategory, then click Continue. For Instant e-PAN, choose the e-filing department and pick the option that matches (the manual lists an E-Pan category and an Instant e-PAN option). For officer matters, the AO department lists PAN Status and PAN related application with AO.

There is no Protean or UTIITSL category. Complaints about their applications go to them first, as in the steps above.

  5. Describe the problem and submit

Say what you applied for, when, the reference numbers, what went wrong and what you want done. Attach screenshots or receipts if useful. Click Submit Grievance.

You'll know it worked when a Grievance Acknowledgement Number appears. Save it.

  6. Track the grievance

Without login, click View Grievance under Contact Us and enter the acknowledgement number and your mobile number. With login, use Grievances → View Grievance Status.

In what order should you escalate?

Go one level at a time and give each level a fair chance to reply. Skipping straight to the top usually sends your complaint back down.

LevelWhereUse it when
1Helpline of the agency handling your requestAny question or delay
2Written complaint: Protean Complaints/Queries link or email, UTIITSL Customer Feedback Corner or emailThe call didn't solve it, or you want a record
3e-Filing grievance (for e-Filing, Instant e-PAN and AO matters)Written complaint ignored, or the issue is with the Department
4Your Assessing Officer, then the grievance officers of the Principal Chief Commissioner's regionThe case needs an officer's decision
5CPGRAMS (pgportal.gov.in)Nothing above worked

The Department's Grievance & Support page says region-wise officer contacts exist for grievance petitions. It doesn't print the numbers on the page, so ask your AO's office which officer to write to.

When is your Assessing Officer the right contact?

Your Assessing Officer (AO) is the tax officer whose area covers your PAN. Helplines can't change Department records that need an officer's decision. In those cases they will usually send you to the AO.

To find your AO, use the Know Your AO quick link on the e-Filing home page (the manual's steps call it "Know Your JAO"). Enter your PAN and mobile number and verify with an OTP. It shows the AO type, address, the officer's email ID and your PAN's status. How to find your AO code →

Warning

Fake PAN helpline numbers

  • Fake "PAN customer care" numbers appear in search ads, social media posts and comment sections. Check any number against this page or the official sites before calling.
  • Treat any call or message asking for an OTP, password, PIN or card details as a red flag. The Department says it does not ask for PINs or passwords by email.
  • Never install a screen-sharing or "support" app because a caller asked you to.
  • Never pay a caller to "unblock", "speed up" or "fix" your PAN. Official PAN fees are paid to Protean or UTIITSL (online or at a PAN centre, with a receipt), and the linking fee through the e-Filing portal.
  • Lost money or shared details? Call 1930 and report on cybercrime.gov.in. PAN fraud guide →

Frequently asked questions

Is there a toll-free PAN card customer care number?

The Income Tax e-Filing helpdesk numbers 1800 103 0025 and 1800 419 0025 are toll-free and cover Instant e-PAN and PAN–Aadhaar linking. The Protean (020-27218080) and UTIITSL (033-40802999) numbers are regular numbers, so normal call charges apply.

Is NSDL PAN customer care the same as Protean?

Yes. NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure was renamed Protean eGov Technologies. Its PAN helpline is 020-27218080, open 7am to 11pm on all days.

Which number should I call for Instant e-PAN?

Call the e-Filing helpdesk on 1800 103 0025, because Instant e-PAN runs on the Income Tax e-Filing portal. Protean and UTIITSL usually can't look up Instant e-PAN requests.

Can the helpline correct my PAN details over the phone?

No. Corrections need a change request on Protean or UTIITSL with supporting documents. The helpline can explain the steps and check the status of a request you already made.

Who do I contact if my PAN card has not arrived?

Contact the agency you applied through, with your acknowledgement or coupon number. The Income Tax Department's "Whom to contact" PAN page says to contact Protean if a PAN card is not received; if you applied through UTIITSL, contact UTIITSL.

How do I complain against Protean or UTIITSL?

Write to them first: Protean has a Complaints/Queries link on its Customer Care page, and UTIITSL has a Customer Feedback Corner. If they don't resolve it, you can file on CPGRAMS at pgportal.gov.in.

Is there a PAN helpline on WhatsApp?

We found no WhatsApp number for PAN on the official contact pages we checked. Treat any "PAN WhatsApp helpline" you see online with caution.

Who handles a duplicate PAN?

Usually your Assessing Officer, since the extra PAN has to be cancelled in the Department's records. You can also surrender it through a CR-01 change request at Protean or UTIITSL. Call them first, because we found no separate box for the extra PAN on the 2026 form. Find your AO with Know Your AO on the e-Filing portal, and keep both PANs and your ID proof ready.

Can someone else call the helpline for me?

Usually yes, if they have your reference number, but you stay responsible for what is shared. Never let anyone, including a helper, read out an OTP to a caller.

What should I do if I paid a fake PAN website?

Call the cybercrime helpline 1930 quickly and report on cybercrime.gov.in. Tell your bank too, and forward any fake Department email to [email protected].

Bottom line

Call the agency that handled your request, with your reference number ready. Protean: 020-27218080. UTIITSL: 033-40802999. e-Filing (Instant e-PAN, linking): 1800 103 0025. Officer matters go to your AO, and fraud goes to 1930. If a call fails, write in, then escalate one level at a time.
