How Do You Link Your PAN with Your Bank Account?

You link PAN with your bank account through the bank, not the tax department. Many banks let you add PAN in net banking or the mobile app. Otherwise, give a self-attested PAN copy at your branch. For income tax refunds, also add and pre-validate the account on the e-Filing portal. There is no government fee.

Why does your bank need your PAN?

Your bank keeps your PAN on its own record of your account. It needs it for four main reasons.

ReasonWhat the rule saysWhat it means for you
Opening an accountRule 159 of the Income-tax Rules, 2026 lists opening a bank or co-operative bank account. Time deposits and BSBD accounts are separate.Quote PAN, or sign Form 97 if you have none.
KYC (Know Your Customer)RBI's KYC FAQs list PAN, its e-document, or Form No. 60 for individuals. That FAQ text still names Form 60; under the Income-tax Rules, 2026, Form 97 replaced Form 60 from 1 April 2026.Banks ask existing customers for PAN when they update KYC.
TDS on interestSection 397 of the Income-tax Act, 2025: without a valid PAN, TDS is usually the highest of the normal rate, the rate in force, or 20%.Your FD or RD interest is taxed at a higher rate at source.
Cash and big depositsRule 159: cash deposits of ₹10 lakh or more in a financial year need PAN. So do fixed deposits over ₹50,000 at once, or over ₹5 lakh in a year.Form 97 is not allowed for the cash rule.

Banks start TDS on deposit interest once it crosses a yearly limit. Under section 393(1) of the Income-tax Act, 2025, that limit is ₹50,000 a year, or ₹1 lakh for senior citizens. The full list of PAN transactions is in our guide to where PAN is mandatory.

Myth

"My PAN is linked with Aadhaar, so it's linked with my bank too." No. PAN–Aadhaar linking updates the tax department's records only. Your bank keeps its own KYC record, and the e-Filing portal checks the PAN–bank link separately when you pre-validate an account.

How can you check if your PAN is linked with your bank account?

There's no single public "PAN–bank status" page. Use any of these checks.

  • Net banking or app profile: many banks show your PAN, partly masked, in the profile or KYC section.
  • Pre-validation on e-Filing: if you add the account and the PAN isn't linked, the portal says the PAN–bank link failed. If it shows Validated, the link is fine. See the steps below.
  • Form 26AS or AIS: TDS your bank deducted on interest should appear against your PAN in Form 26AS or the Annual Information Statement (AIS) on e-Filing. If it's missing, the bank may not have your PAN. Both download as locked PDFs; our file unlock tool opens them in your browser.
  • TDS certificate or statement: a TDS certificate from your bank shows the PAN it used.
  • Ask the branch or the bank's official customer care. They can confirm the PAN on record.
Tip

If you hold accounts in several banks, check each one. Each bank keeps its own record. A PAN updated in one bank doesn't reach the others.

What are the ways to link or update PAN with a bank account?

The options depend on your bank. Menu names and channels differ, so check your bank's own website.

WayWhat you needGood to know
Net bankingLogin details, PAN, registered mobile for OTPUsually under profile, KYC or service requests
Mobile banking appThe bank's official app, PAN, OTPInstall only from the official app store
BranchOriginal PAN card or e-PAN, self-attested copy, passbook or account numberWorks for every bank; fill the bank's KYC or PAN update form
Phone bankingAccount details for verificationSome banks offer it; ask your bank

Some banks may offer other channels too. Use only channels listed on your bank's official website.

How do you update PAN through net banking or the app?

These are general steps. Your bank's labels may be different.

Updating PAN online with your bank
  1. Log in to your bank's net banking or official app
  2. Can you find a PAN or KYC update option? No: visit the branch (branch steps)
  3. Enter your 10-character PAN and check it
  4. Confirm with the OTP sent to your registered mobile
  5. Bank checks the PAN and updates your record
  6. PAN shows in your profile
  1. Log in to net banking or the app

Type your bank's web address yourself, or open the app you installed from the official store. Don't use links from SMS or WhatsApp.

  2. Find the PAN or KYC section

Look under the profile, KYC, "update details" or service request menus. The name varies from bank to bank.

If there's no PAN option: your bank may accept PAN only at the branch. Use the branch steps.

  3. Enter your PAN carefully

A PAN has 5 letters, 4 digits and 1 letter, like ABCPK1234X (a dummy number). Some banks also ask for your name or date of birth as on PAN.

  4. Confirm with OTP and submit

Enter the OTP sent to the mobile number registered with the bank. Note any request or reference number.

If the bank says the PAN can't be verified: your name or date of birth may not match your PAN record, or the PAN may be inoperative. See name mismatch.

  5. Check that the update went through

Some banks update at once. Others take a few working days. Check your profile again later.

You'll know it worked when your PAN shows in the profile, or the bank sends a confirmation SMS or email.

How do you link PAN at the bank branch?

Going to the branch works for every bank. It's also the way to fix a name mismatch.

Linking PAN at your branch
  1. Carry your PAN card or e-PAN and a self-attested copy
  2. Ask for the PAN or KYC update form and fill it
  3. Does the account name match your PAN? No: ask the bank to update the name too (name mismatch)
  4. Submit the form and copy; keep the receipt
  5. Bank verifies the PAN and updates your account
  6. PAN linked to the account
  1. Take your PAN and a self-attested copy

Carry the original PAN card or a printout of your e-PAN, a photocopy signed by you, and your passbook or account number. An e-PAN is a digitally signed electronic PAN.

  2. Fill the bank's update form

Banks use their own form, often called a KYC update or PAN update form. Some ask for a short written request instead. Write the account number and PAN clearly.

  3. Check the name on the account

Compare the name on your passbook with your PAN. If they differ, ask the bank to update the account name at the same visit.

  4. Submit and keep the acknowledgement

Hand in the form and the copy. Ask for a stamped acknowledgement or a reference number.

You'll know it worked when the PAN appears in your net banking profile, or the branch confirms it is on record.

If nothing changes after some days: go back with your acknowledgement and ask the branch to check the request.

  5. Ask for TDS to be corrected, if needed

If the bank already deducted TDS at a higher rate, ask whether it can be adjusted. If not, you can generally claim the extra TDS in your income tax return.

Tip

Write the purpose and date across your PAN copy, for example "For PAN update in savings account only, 16-10-2026". It makes misuse of the copy harder.

How do you pre-validate your bank account for income tax refunds?

The e-Filing portal sends refunds only to a bank account that is validated and nominated for refund. Pre-validation checks that the PAN is linked to that account and the name matches. You need an e-Filing login, the account number and IFSC, and a way to e-verify (Aadhaar OTP, net banking or a DSC, depending on your login).

Pre-validating a bank account on e-Filing
  1. Log in to e-Filing and open My Profile → My Bank Account
  2. Click Add Bank Account and enter account number, type and IFSC
  3. Click Proceed to E-Verify and enter the OTP
  4. Does the status show Validated? No: link PAN or fix the name at the bank, then Re-Validate (fixes)
  5. Turn on Nominate for Refund
  6. Refunds can be credited to this account
  1. Log in and open My Bank Account

Log in at incometax.gov.in. Go to My Profile, then My Bank Account. You'll see tabs for Added, Failed and Removed Bank Accounts.

  2. Add the bank account

Click Add Bank Account. Enter the account number, choose the Account Type and Holder Type, and enter the IFSC. The bank name and branch fill in by themselves.

  3. E-verify the request

Click Proceed to E-Verify, choose an option and click Continue. Enter the OTP.

You'll know it worked when a success message appears on screen.

If the Aadhaar OTP doesn't come: it goes to the mobile linked with your Aadhaar. Pick another e-verify option, or update your mobile in Aadhaar.

  4. Watch the status

Check the Status column in the Added Bank Accounts tab. It shows Validation in progress first, then Validated (or Validated and EVC enabled). The portal's FAQs say the status should update within 10–12 working days.

If the account moves to Failed Bank Accounts: the PAN may not be linked, or the name may differ. Fix it at the bank and click Re-Validate. If it says Validation cannot be done, the bank isn't integrated with e-Filing or NPCI; add an account at a bank that is.

  5. Nominate the account for refund

Turn on the Nominate for Refund switch for the validated account and click Continue. Allowed types are Saving, Current, Cash Credit, Overdraft and Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO).

You'll know it worked when the switch moves to the right.

Tip

Want to e-verify your tax return through your bank? Click Enable EVC in the Actions column. It works only at e-Filing-integrated banks, and only on one account at a time. Your mobile or email with the bank must match your e-Filing profile.

If a refund failed, for example because the account was closed, you can raise a Refund Reissue request on e-Filing. You need a validated bank account for it. Logging in with Aadhaar as your user ID works only if your PAN and Aadhaar are linked. For e-Filing help, call 1800 103 0025.

What if your bank name doesn't match your PAN?

The e-Filing portal compares the account holder's name with your PAN record. A different spelling, missing middle name, or initials can make pre-validation fail. Common examples: "R. Kumar" in the bank and "Rakesh Kumar" on PAN, or a maiden name in one and a married name in the other.

If…Then…
Your PAN name is correct, the bank's is wrong or shortAsk the branch to update the account name to match PAN. Then click Re-Validate on e-Filing.
Your PAN name is wrong or oldCorrect PAN with Form CR-01 at Protean or UTIITSL. See change name in PAN.
Your PAN and Aadhaar names also differFix that first; it can block PAN–Aadhaar linking. See linking problems, or compare both names with our PAN vs Aadhaar name checker. If Aadhaar has the wrong name, see fixing a name mismatch in Aadhaar.

Use Verify PAN Status on e-Filing to see whether your PAN details are active and match. It needs PAN, name, date of birth and mobile, and only shows information. How to verify a PAN →

What happens if your PAN isn't linked, or is inoperative?

SituationWhat can happen
Bank has no PAN for youTDS on interest at the highest of the normal rate, the rate in force, or 20%. A Form 121 declaration for no TDS (it replaced Forms 15G and 15H) is invalid without a valid PAN.
PAN is inoperative (not linked with Aadhaar when it should be)No refund, no interest on refunds for that period, and higher TDS/TCS.
Account not pre-validated on e-FilingRefunds can't be credited to it.
KYC not updated after remindersRBI's KYC FAQs say the bank will close the account after giving due notice.
Big cash deposits without PANCash deposits of ₹10 lakh or more in a year need PAN; Form 97 isn't allowed.

An inoperative PAN becomes operative again within 30 days of linking it with Aadhaar, after the ₹1,000 late fee. The full effects and fix are in our inoperative PAN guide.

Important

Give your bank a valid, operative PAN before interest is credited. Extra TDS can generally be claimed back in your tax return, but a refund needs an operative PAN and a validated account.

What if you don't have a PAN?

Form 97 is the declaration for people without PAN in certain transactions under Rule 159. It replaced Form 60 on 1 April 2026. You can use it to open a normal savings or current account, or for fixed deposits. You can't use it for cash deposits of ₹10 lakh or more in a year, and companies and firms can't use it. The full rules are in where PAN is mandatory.

Basic Savings Bank Deposit accounts are left out of the Rule 159 list. If your income is taxable, apply for a PAN. Most adults with Aadhaar can get a free Instant e-PAN. Otherwise, apply on Form 93 (₹107 with a printed card, ₹72 for e-PAN only). Not sure if you already have one? Find your PAN number before applying.

PAN and your NRO or NRE account

  • Give your PAN to your bank for your NRO account. Without a valid PAN, TDS on interest is usually higher.
  • For refunds, e-Filing lets you nominate a validated Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) account. NRE accounts are not in the portal's list of allowed types.
  • No Aadhaar-linked Indian mobile? The portal offers other e-verify options, such as a DSC or an EVC through your bank; use whichever it shows you.
  • Non-residents don't need to link PAN with Aadhaar. If your PAN shows inoperative, you may need your residential status updated. See PAN for NRIs.
  • To update PAN from abroad, try net banking first. Otherwise, check your bank's NRI service page for its process.

Warning

"Update PAN or your account will be blocked" scams

  • SMS or WhatsApp messages with a link to "update PAN" or "complete KYC" are a common trick. Open your bank's site or app yourself instead.
  • Treat any call or message asking for an OTP as a red flag. Never share it, even with someone who says they are from your bank.
  • Don't install screen-sharing or "KYC" apps at a caller's request.
  • Find helpline numbers on your bank's official website or passbook, not in search ads.

Frequently asked questions

Is it mandatory to link PAN with a bank account?

For a normal savings or current account, you must quote PAN, or sign Form 97 if you have none. Basic Savings Bank Deposit accounts are left out of Rule 159. Even where it isn't required, a missing PAN usually means TDS on interest at 20% or more.

Can I link PAN with my bank account online?

Usually yes. Many banks have a PAN or KYC update option in net banking or the mobile app, often confirmed with OTP. If yours doesn't, give a self-attested PAN copy at the branch.

How do I know if my PAN is linked with my bank account?

Check your net banking profile, ask the branch, or look for the bank's TDS against your PAN in Form 26AS or AIS. Pre-validating the account on e-Filing also tells you if the PAN–bank link failed.

Does linking PAN with Aadhaar also link it with my bank?

No. PAN–Aadhaar linking updates the tax department's records. Your bank keeps its own record, so give your PAN to each bank separately.

Why does e-Filing say my PAN is not linked when my bank says it is?

The bank may have your PAN on a different account or customer ID, or the name may not match. Ask the branch to check this specific account number, then click Re-Validate.

Can my income tax refund go to an NRE account?

The e-Filing portal allows Saving, Current, Cash Credit, Overdraft and Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) accounts for refunds. NRE accounts are not in that list.

Can I change the bank account for my refund?

Yes. Add and validate the new account in My Bank Account, then turn on Nominate for Refund for it. Remove old or closed accounts so they don't cause confusion.

I don't have a PAN. Can I still open a bank account?

Yes. You can sign Form 97 for a normal account, or open a Basic Savings Bank Deposit account. Form 97 isn't allowed for cash deposits of ₹10 lakh or more in a year.

Does the bank charge for linking PAN?

There is no government fee. Banks generally update PAN as part of KYC; ask your bank if it charges anything.

What happens to my bank account if my PAN becomes inoperative?

TDS on interest can be deducted at a higher rate, and you get no tax refund while the PAN is inoperative. Link PAN with Aadhaar; the PAN becomes operative again within 30 days.

Whose PAN goes on a minor's bank account?

Under Rule 159, a minor with no taxable income quotes the PAN of a parent or guardian. A child can also get their own PAN.

Bottom line

Give your PAN to every bank you use, through net banking, the app or the branch. Make sure your PAN is operative and your bank name matches it. Then pre-validate and nominate one account on e-Filing so refunds reach you. For e-Filing help, call 1800 103 0025. For PAN card issues, call Protean on 020-27218080.
