Forgot Your PAN Number? How to Find It (2026): By Aadhaar and Other Ways
If your PAN is linked to Aadhaar and you have an e-Filing account, log in with your Aadhaar number and open My Profile to see your PAN. If you got PAN through Instant e-PAN, use its Check Status option with an Aadhaar OTP. Otherwise, check old Form 16s, tax returns or bank papers. All of this is free.

Which way of finding your PAN fits you?
Answer a few questions. The finder points you to the quickest method for your situation.
| Your situation | Best method |
|---|---|
| PAN linked with Aadhaar and you have an e-Filing account | Log in with Aadhaar, open My Profile |
| You got PAN through Instant e-PAN | Instant e-PAN: Check Status / Download |
| You have old tax, salary, bank or demat papers | Read the PAN from those papers |
| You applied recently and have the acknowledgement number | Download e-PAN with the acknowledgement number |
| None of the above | Call Protean or UTIITSL |
| You have a number and want to confirm it | Verify PAN Status |
Where is your PAN already written down?
Before you go online, look through your files and email. Your PAN is printed on many documents. This is often the fastest way.
| Document | Where to find it | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Form 16 (salary TDS certificate) | From your employer, usually by email each year | Shows the employee's PAN |
| Form 16A (TDS on interest, rent, fees) | From your bank or the payer | Shows your PAN as the deductee |
| ITR acknowledgement (ITR-V) | Email from the e-Filing portal after you file a return | Shows the PAN of the person who filed |
| Form 26AS or AIS printout | Saved PDFs from earlier years, or your CA's files | Your annual tax statement, issued on your PAN |
| Demat or mutual fund statement | Monthly or yearly account statements | Usually shows PAN; some show it partly hidden |
| Bank KYC details | Net banking profile, passbook or branch | Some banks show it; others mask most digits |
| PAN allotment email or e-PAN PDF | Search your email for "e-PAN" or "PAN allotment" | The e-PAN PDF is usually locked with your date of birth. Our unlock tool opens e-PAN, AIS and 26AS files in your browser |
| Salary slips, loan or insurance papers | Employer portal, lender or insurer | Often shows PAN |
A PAN has 10 characters: 5 letters, 4 numbers and 1 letter, like ABCPK1234X (a dummy number). For a person, the 4th letter is P. If a document shows only part of it, such as XXXXX1234X, it is masked and you can't rebuild the rest.
Found a number but not sure it is right? Check it with Verify PAN Status before you use it.
How do you find your PAN by logging in with Aadhaar?
The e-Filing portal says you can use your Aadhaar number as the user ID, but only if it is linked with your PAN. You also need an existing e-Filing account. Your PAN appears in My Profile after login.
Not sure if your PAN is linked? You need the PAN to check the link status, so try the login first. To link, see how to link PAN with Aadhaar.
- Open incometax.gov.in and click Login
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number as the user ID
- Do you remember your password? No: use Forgot Password and reset it with Aadhaar OTP
- Enter the password, or the OTP if you reset it
- Dashboard opens: click your name, then My Profile
- Your PAN appears in your personal details
-
Open the e-Filing portal
Go to incometax.gov.in and click Login. Check the address bar. The real site ends in .gov.in.
-
Enter your Aadhaar number as the user ID
Type your 12-digit Aadhaar number in the user ID box and continue.
If the portal doesn't accept your Aadhaar number: your Aadhaar may not be linked to a PAN, or you never registered. Try Instant e-PAN or your old papers.
-
Enter your password, or reset it with Aadhaar OTP
Confirm your secure access message and enter your password. If you forgot it, use Forgot Password. The portal lets you reset it with an Aadhaar OTP, sent to the mobile linked with Aadhaar.
If the OTP doesn't arrive: your Aadhaar mobile may be old. Update it with UIDAI first (usually at an Aadhaar centre). See how to update your Aadhaar mobile number.
-
Open My Profile and read your PAN
On the Dashboard, click your name at the top right, then My Profile. The portal says your personal details include your PAN.
You'll know it worked when you see a 10-character PAN under your personal details. Write it down somewhere safe.
How do you find your PAN with Instant e-PAN Check Status?
This works if you got your PAN through Instant e-PAN using your Aadhaar. It needs only your Aadhaar number and an OTP. No login is needed.
If your PAN came from Protean, UTIITSL or a centre, this page may not show it. Trying it does no harm, but use the login or papers method if it shows nothing.
- Open incometax.gov.in → Instant e-PAN (Quick Links)
- Click Continue on Check Status / Download e-PAN
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number
- Did the OTP reach your Aadhaar mobile? No: update your Aadhaar mobile first, or use another method
- Status page shows your e-PAN request
- View e-PAN or Download e-PAN: your PAN is on it
-
Open Instant e-PAN on the portal
On the incometax.gov.in home page, click Instant e-PAN under Quick Links. On the next page, click Continue on the Check Status / Download e-PAN tile.
-
Enter Aadhaar and the OTP
Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and click Continue. Enter the 6-digit OTP and click Validate Aadhaar OTP and Continue. The OTP is valid for 15 minutes, and you get 3 tries.
If the OTP fails three times: wait for the timer and use Resend OTP.
-
View or download the e-PAN
The status page shows your request. If the e-PAN was allotted, click View e-PAN or Download e-PAN.
You'll know it worked when the e-PAN opens with your photo, name and 10-character PAN.
Can you get your PAN with only the acknowledgement number?
Often, yes, if you applied through Protean. Protean's e-PAN download has an Acknowledgement Number option, so you don't need the PAN itself. You need the 15-digit acknowledgement number from your application slip or email.
- Open Protean's e-PAN download page
- Choose Acknowledgement Number, enter it with your date of birth
- Did the OTP arrive by email or mobile? No: check the contact details you gave in the application
- Pay ₹8.26 if the free period is over
- e-PAN downloads with your PAN on it
-
Choose the acknowledgement number option
Open the e-PAN download page on Protean's official website. Select Acknowledgement Number. Enter it, your date of birth and the captcha.
-
Validate the OTP and download
Pick email, mobile or both for the OTP, and validate it. The download is free within 30 days of allotment. After that, a fee of ₹8.26 applies.
You'll know it worked when a PDF e-PAN downloads. Its password is usually your date of birth.
If the page won't accept an old acknowledgement number: use another method on this page, or call Protean.
Applied through UTIITSL? Track your application with your application coupon number on pan.utiitsl.com, or call UTIITSL. You can also check PAN application status.
Can a helpline tell you your PAN?
If nothing else works, call the agency that issued your PAN. Explain that you forgot the number. They can tell you what proof they need and what to do next.
| Helpline | Number | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Protean (PAN and TAN) | 020-27218080 | PANs applied through Protean (NSDL); 7am–11pm |
| UTIITSL | 033-40802999 | PANs applied through UTIITSL |
| Income Tax e-Filing | 1800 103 0025 | Login, password and Aadhaar OTP problems on the portal |
Keep ready your full name, date of birth, father's name, address and the year you applied. We can't promise they will read out a full PAN on the phone. Some identity checks may be needed first.
You can also ask your Assessing Officer (AO, your local income tax officer). An employer's HR team or your CA may also have your PAN on file. More numbers: PAN customer care.
What does "Verify PAN Status" do?
It checks a PAN you already have. It cannot find a forgotten PAN. The portal's manual calls it "Verify Your PAN"; full steps are in our guide to verifying a PAN online. Use it when you found a number in old papers and want to be sure it is yours and still valid.
- Open incometax.gov.in → Verify PAN Status (Quick Links)
- Enter PAN, full name, date of birth and mobile
- Did the 6-digit OTP arrive? No: wait for the timer and use Resend OTP
- Portal shows the PAN status
-
Open Verify PAN Status and fill the details
Click Verify PAN Status under Quick Links on incometax.gov.in. Enter the PAN, full name, date of birth and a mobile number you can access. Click Continue.
-
Enter the OTP and read the result
Enter the OTP and click Validate. The portal shows the PAN status. The portal says this is for information only.
You'll know it worked when the portal shows a status message for that PAN. The manual doesn't list every message, so read it carefully.
If the details don't match: you may have the wrong number, or your name or date of birth differs on PAN records. See PAN correction.
If the result says the PAN is inoperative, it usually means it isn't linked with Aadhaar. See inoperative PAN.
Should you apply for a new PAN if you forgot the number?
No. A person can hold only one PAN. Your old PAN stays valid even if you can't remember it. A second PAN is a duplicate, which section 262(8) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 bars. The Assessing Officer (AO) may impose a ₹10,000 penalty under section 467 (section 272B under the old 1961 Act).
A duplicate PAN also causes real trouble. Tax deducted on one PAN may not show on the other. Your returns, refunds and bank KYC can get mixed up.
Already have two PANs? Keep one and surrender the other. See how to surrender a duplicate PAN.
What should you do after you find your PAN?
- Save a copy: download your e-PAN as a PDF. It is a digitally signed PAN in electronic form. Download e-PAN.
- Lost the card too? Order a reprint for ₹50 in India (₹959 abroad). Reprint a lost PAN card.
- Check the Aadhaar link: an unlinked PAN can become inoperative. Check PAN–Aadhaar link status.
- Register on e-Filing if you haven't yet. Next time, you can log in with Aadhaar and see your PAN.
- Store it safely: keep the number in a password manager or DigiLocker, not in open notes or chats.
DigiLocker is reported to offer a "PAN Verification Record", but fetching it usually asks for your PAN. If you fetched it earlier, check Issued Documents in DigiLocker. It may already be there.
What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?
| Your situation | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Login with Aadhaar doesn't work | Aadhaar isn't linked to a PAN, or you never registered on e-Filing | Try Instant e-PAN Check Status, old papers, or the helplines. |
| No OTP on your mobile | The mobile linked with Aadhaar has changed or is off | Update your mobile in Aadhaar (usually at an Aadhaar centre), then try again. |
| Instant e-PAN Check Status shows nothing | Your PAN didn't come from Instant e-PAN | Use the login method or your old papers. |
| Documents show only part of the PAN | The number is masked for privacy | Look for Form 16, an ITR acknowledgement or the e-PAN PDF, which show it in full. |
| e-PAN PDF won't open | It is password-protected | Try your date of birth as DDMMYYYY. Unsure? Use our e-PAN password helper. |
| Verify PAN Status says details don't match | Wrong number, or name or date of birth differs on record | Check the number again. If it is yours, apply for a correction. |
| You found two different PANs in your papers | You may have been allotted two PANs | Keep the one you use most, and surrender the other. |
| Someone online offers to find your PAN for a fee | Likely a scam or misuse of leaked data | Don't pay or share Aadhaar or OTP. Use only the free official methods. |
Still stuck? A PAN centre or your CA can help you contact Protean or UTIITSL. Never let anyone apply for a fresh PAN for you.
Finding your PAN from abroad
- Non-residents are exempt from linking PAN with Aadhaar, so many NRIs can't use the Aadhaar login. Your usual e-Filing user ID is your PAN, so that login helps only if your browser or password manager saved it.
- Check your papers: old ITR acknowledgements, Form 16 from an Indian employer, NRO account statements, demat and mutual fund statements, and Form 16A from your bank.
- Aadhaar OTP needs an Indian mobile. If your Aadhaar mobile is an Indian number you no longer use, OTP methods won't work.
- Call from abroad: Protean on +91 20 27218080 or UTIITSL on +91 33 40802999.
- Your Indian CA or bank relationship manager may have your PAN on file. A reprint posted abroad costs ₹959. See PAN for NRIs.
Region not right?
"Find PAN by name" sites and callers
- There is no official public search to find anyone's PAN by name and date of birth. Sites that claim this may be using leaked data, or collecting yours.
- Never type your Aadhaar number and OTP on a site that isn't incometax.gov.in, proteantech.in or utiitsl.com.
- The Income Tax Department has warned that it does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar access details by email. Treat any call or message asking for an OTP as a red flag.
- All the methods on this page are free. Anyone charging to "recover" a PAN is charging only a service fee.
- Lost money or data? Call the cybercrime helpline 1930 quickly. PAN fraud guide →
Frequently asked questions
Can I find my PAN number with my Aadhaar number?
Yes, in two cases. If your PAN is linked with Aadhaar and you have an e-Filing account, log in with your Aadhaar number and open My Profile. If you got PAN through Instant e-PAN, use Check Status / Download e-PAN with an Aadhaar OTP.
Can I find my PAN by name and date of birth?
Not through any public official service we could confirm. The current e-Filing portal offers Verify PAN Status, which needs the PAN itself. Sites claiming to search by name are risky.
Is the "Know Your PAN" service still available?
We could not find a "Know Your PAN" service on today's e-Filing portal. Its Quick Links offer Instant e-PAN and Verify PAN Status instead. Use the login, Instant e-PAN or papers methods on this page.
I never registered on the e-Filing portal. Can I still log in with Aadhaar?
No. You need an existing e-Filing account, and registering normally needs your PAN. Look in your old papers first, or call the helplines.
Can I apply for a new PAN if I can't find the old one?
No. A person may hold only one PAN, and your old PAN is still valid. A second PAN is a duplicate and can lead to a penalty, so find the old number instead.
Where is the PAN on Form 16?
Form 16 shows the PAN of both the employer and the employee. Use the one marked as the employee's PAN.
Does it cost anything to find my PAN?
No. Logging in, Instant e-PAN Check Status and Verify PAN Status are free. Protean charges ₹8.26 for an e-PAN download only after the free period ends.
My Aadhaar mobile number has changed. What can I do?
Aadhaar OTP goes only to the mobile linked with Aadhaar. Update your mobile in Aadhaar (usually at an Aadhaar centre), or use your old tax and bank papers in the meantime.
Can I find a family member's PAN?
Only with their consent and their Aadhaar OTP, or from their own documents. Never enter someone else's details on unknown websites.
Does Verify PAN Status tell me my PAN?
No. You must enter the PAN first. It then confirms the PAN status after an OTP.
Bottom line
Check your Form 16, ITR acknowledgements and email first. If your PAN is linked with Aadhaar, log in to e-Filing with your Aadhaar number and open My Profile. Instant e-PAN users can use Check Status with an Aadhaar OTP. Never apply for a second PAN. For help, call Protean on 020-27218080 or UTIITSL on 033-40802999.
