What should you do if your PAN card is lost, damaged or stolen?
Answer a few questions to find your route. It takes under a minute.
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Lost or damaged, details unchanged, Protean / NSDL applicant | Reprint on Protean (₹50 / ₹959) |
| Lost or damaged, details unchanged, UTIITSL applicant | Reprint on UTIITSL (₹50 / ₹959) |
| Got PAN through Instant e-PAN | Reprint on Protean or UTIITSL |
| Don't know which agency | Try Protean first, then UTIITSL |
| Details changed, or no mobile/email in PAN records | File a correction |
| Don't know your PAN number | Find it first |
| Card stolen or misuse feared | Reprint, then check for misuse |
Why shouldn't you apply for a new PAN when the card is lost?
Your PAN number is yours for life. Losing the card doesn't cancel it. If you fill a new-PAN form (Form 93) and get a second number, you will hold two PANs, which the law doesn't allow. The penalty can be ₹10,000 under section 467 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (this was section 272B under the old 1961 Act). Two PANs also cause mismatched tax credits and KYC trouble.
Some agents push a "new PAN" because it's easier for them. Say no. Ask for a reprint or a correction. If you already have two PANs, keep one and surrender the extra PAN.
Can you use your PAN while waiting for the reprint?
Yes. A plastic card isn't the only valid proof. These work straight away:
- e-PAN PDF. The Income Tax Department says e-PAN is a valid form of PAN. Download it from Protean, UTIITSL or the e-Filing portal. It's free within about a month of allotment or a change, then ₹8.26. Instant e-PAN downloads are always free. How to download e-PAN → The PDF opens with a password; our e-PAN password helper shows which one.
- DigiLocker. Get your free PAN Verification Record under Issued Documents → Income Tax Department.
- A colour print of the e-PAN works for most offices that want a copy.
If you only need to show PAN and nobody insists on the plastic card, the e-PAN may be all you need. Many people skip the reprint altogether.

Open Protean's reprint page and enter PAN and Aadhaar
YouPortalOTP / payment
- Open Protean's reprint page and enter PAN and Aadhaar. Aadhaar is needed for individuals. Type the PAN carefully.
- Enter your date of birth, accept the terms and submit. Use the date on your PAN, which can differ from Aadhaar.
- Check the details shown. The card goes to the address in your PAN records. If anything is wrong or old, stop and file a correction.
- Choose where to get the OTP. Pick the mobile, email or both registered in your PAN records.
- Enter the OTP. If it doesn't arrive, try the other option or wait a minute and resend.
- Pay ₹50 online. It's ₹959 if the address on record is outside India.
- Save the acknowledgement. The card comes by post, and an e-PAN goes to your email if one is on record.
How do you order a PAN reprint through Protean (NSDL)?
This works if your latest PAN application went through Protean (formerly NSDL), or you got your PAN through Instant e-PAN.
-
Open the reprint page
Go to onlineservices.proteantech.in and open Reprint of PAN Card.
-
Enter PAN, Aadhaar and date of birth
Enter your PAN, your Aadhaar (individuals only) and your date of birth. GSTN is optional. Accept the consent terms, complete the captcha and submit.
If it says your record is with another agency: your latest application went through UTIITSL. Use UTIITSL.
-
Check the details on screen
The reprint uses your existing PAN data. You can't change anything here. Look closely at the address, because the card is posted there.
If the address or name is wrong: don't pay. File a correction instead.
-
Verify with the OTP
Choose to get the OTP on your registered mobile, email or both, then enter it.
If no mobile or email is shown: your PAN record has none. Protean's guidelines say you must file a correction request in that case.
-
Pay the fee
Pay ₹50 for dispatch in India or ₹959 for dispatch abroad, including taxes. Pay online with the options the page shows.
You'll know it worked when you see an acknowledgement. Save it as a PDF or screenshot.
-
Watch for the card
An e-PAN is emailed to the email in your PAN records, if there is one. The card is printed and sent by post. Track it with your acknowledgement number on the PAN status page.
How do you order a PAN reprint through UTIITSL?
Use UTIITSL if your latest PAN application went through UTIITSL or a UTI centre, or if you got an Instant e-PAN. UTIITSL says reprint is only for PANs with no change in data.
-
Open the reprint option
On the UTIITSL PAN portal, choose Reprint PAN Card (on the site it sits under the apply / PAN card services menu). If your earlier request didn't go through, there's a separate Regenerate PAN Card Reprint request option.
-
Enter your details
Enter your PAN and date of birth (or date of incorporation or formation). Aadhaar and GSTIN may be asked as optional fields. Complete the captcha and submit.
-
Pay online
Pay ₹50 for an Indian address or ₹959 for a foreign address, including taxes. The request is only submitted once the payment goes through.
You'll know it worked when you get a confirmation with a reference number. Keep it.
If the money was taken but there's no confirmation: don't pay again. Wait a day, then check the status or call UTIITSL at 033-40802999.
UTIITSL's MyPAN app and UMANG also offer PAN services. Use only these or the official site.
When do you need a correction instead of a reprint?
A reprint prints exactly what's already in your PAN records. File a correction request instead if:
- Your address has changed (otherwise the card goes to the old address).
- Your name, date of birth, father's name or photo is wrong or changed. See changing your name, correcting your date of birth or changing your photo or signature.
- Your PAN record has no mobile or email, or both are old, so you can't get the OTP.
- Your latest application was made through an agency whose reprint service won't accept you.
From 1 April 2026, individuals use Form CR-01 (non-individuals use CR-02) for corrections. A correction also sends you a new card with your same PAN number. How to correct PAN details →
What if you've lost the card and don't know your PAN number?
Find the number first. Both reprint services need it. Try these places:
- Old ITR acknowledgements, Form 16 or salary slips.
- Bank, demat, mutual fund or insurance statements and KYC papers. Many show the PAN.
- Your acknowledgement slip from when you applied. Its number lets you track the application.
- Your e-Filing account, if you have one, shows your PAN after login.
Then confirm it with the e-Filing portal's free Verify Your PAN service. More ways to find your PAN →
What should you do if your PAN card was stolen?
Order a reprint as above. Your PAN number won't change, so the main risk is someone using a copy of your card. Take these steps:
Check your AIS and Form 26AS
Log in to the e-Filing portal and look at your Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS. Look for bank accounts, deposits, purchases or income you don't recognise. Downloaded AIS and 26AS PDFs are password-protected; our unlock tool for income tax files opens them in your browser.
Check your credit report
Get your report from a credit bureau such as CIBIL. Look for loans or cards you didn't apply for.
Report if you see misuse
File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930, and report it to your local police. Tell the bank or lender involved.
Was your Aadhaar card in the same wallet? Follow our lost Aadhaar card plan too, including locking your biometrics.
The online reprint doesn't ask for one. But if you file a correction (CR-01) because your card is lost, the official form guidelines ask for a copy of an FIR. A police report (many states let you report a lost document online) is worth it if your card was stolen, or you fear misuse. It gives you a dated record if a fake loan or account turns up later. What can go wrong, and how do you fix it?
| Your situation | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Protean says your record isn't with them | Your latest application went through UTIITSL | Use the UTIITSL reprint. |
| No mobile or email shown for the OTP | Your PAN record has no contact details | File a correction to add them. You get a new card with it. |
| OTP not received | Old mobile/email in PAN records, or a network delay | Try the other option (email or mobile). Wait a minute and resend. If both are old, file a correction. |
| Address on screen is old | Your PAN address was never updated | Don't pay for a reprint. File a correction with your new address. |
| Aadhaar asked, but you don't have one | Protean asks Aadhaar for individuals | Try UTIITSL if eligible, use the e-PAN, or ask a PAN centre about a correction request. |
| Paid, but no acknowledgement | Payment didn't link to the request | Don't pay twice. Wait a day, then call the helpline with your payment reference. |
| Card hasn't arrived after 3–4 weeks | Postal delay or wrong address | Check PAN status for the dispatch details. See card not received. |
| Old laminated card has peeled, faded or cracked | An old-style paper card, or a home lamination | Order a reprint for ₹50. New cards are plastic with a QR code. Don't laminate them. |
| You've already applied for a second PAN | You may now hold two PANs | Keep one PAN and surrender the other quickly. |
What NRIs and people abroad should know
- A reprint can be posted to a foreign address for ₹959, including taxes. The card goes to the address in your PAN records, so update it first if you've moved.
- The e-PAN by email is usually the quickest fix abroad. Choose email for the OTP if your Indian mobile is off.
- Protean asks for Aadhaar for individuals. If you don't have Aadhaar, check UTIITSL, or file a correction request from abroad.
- Never apply for a fresh PAN from abroad because you lost the card. PAN for NRIs →

Avoid duplicate PAN scams
- The official reprint fee is ₹50 (₹959 abroad). Sites charging ₹300–₹1,000 for a "duplicate PAN" are middlemen or fakes.
- Anyone offering a "new PAN" to replace a lost card is putting you at risk of a ₹10,000 penalty.
- Use only proteantech.in, utiitsl.com, incometax.gov.in or digilocker.gov.in.
- Never share an OTP on a call or WhatsApp, even with someone claiming to be from the PAN office.
- Don't post a photo of your PAN card on social media when asking for help.
Frequently asked questions
Will my PAN number change if I get a duplicate card?
No. A reprint or duplicate card carries the same PAN number. Your PAN stays the same for life.
How much does a duplicate PAN card cost?
₹50 for delivery in India and ₹959 for delivery abroad, including taxes, on both Protean and UTIITSL.
How long does a PAN reprint take to arrive?
Neither Protean nor UTIITSL states a delivery time. Cards often arrive in 2–3 weeks, but it can take longer in some areas. The e-PAN by email comes much sooner.
Can I get a PAN reprint without Aadhaar?
Protean's reprint asks for Aadhaar for individuals. UTIITSL lists Aadhaar as optional. If neither works for you, download the e-PAN or ask a PAN centre about a correction request.
My address has changed. Can I order a reprint?
Not a good idea, because the card goes to the address in your PAN records. File a correction with the new address instead, and you'll get a new card there.
My card is damaged in the laminate. What should I do?
Order a reprint for ₹50. You get a new plastic card with the same PAN. Don't laminate it, because that can make the QR code hard to scan.
I lost my acknowledgement slip. Can I still get a reprint?
Yes. The reprint needs your PAN number, not the slip. If you don't know your PAN either, find it first from old tax, bank or KYC papers.
Should I file an FIR for a lost PAN card?
It's not needed for the online reprint. The CR-01 correction guidelines do ask for an FIR copy if the card is lost. It's also sensible if the card was stolen or you fear misuse, so you have a dated record.
Is the e-PAN valid while I wait for the card?
Yes. The Income Tax Department says e-PAN is a valid form of PAN. A DigiLocker PAN Verification Record also works for most purposes.
What if I already applied for a new PAN by mistake?
If a second PAN has been allotted, keep one and surrender the other through a surrender request. Don't use both.
Bottom line
A lost or damaged PAN card is a ₹50 fix, not a new PAN. Check your details first. If they're correct, order a reprint from Protean or UTIITSL. If anything has changed, file a correction. Use the free e-PAN while you wait, and check for misuse if the card was stolen.
