PAN Card for a Company, LLP, Firm, Trust or HUF (2026): Form 94, Documents, Fees

Companies, LLPs, partnership firms, trusts, HUFs and other bodies formed in India apply for PAN on Form 94 at Protean or UTIITSL. The fee is the same as for a person: ₹107 with a printed card, ₹72 for e-PAN only. New companies and LLPs can apply for PAN while registering with MCA. A sole proprietor uses their own PAN.

Which kind of entity are you, and what do you need?

Pick your entity. The answer shows the form, the PAN letter you'll get, the main document and who signs. For a person's PAN or a correction, use the Which PAN form tool instead.

What are the types of PAN holders?

The Income Tax Department puts every PAN holder in one of ten groups, called the status. The status decides the 4th letter of the PAN, the documents you give and who signs.

4th letterStatusExamplesForm
PIndividual (person)You, a sole proprietor, a childForm 93
CCompanyPrivate limited, public limited, One Person Company, Section 8 (non-profit) companyForm 94
FFirm / Limited Liability PartnershipPartnership firm (registered or not), LLPForm 94
HHindu Undivided Family (HUF)A family that holds property jointly, run by its kartaForm 94
TTrustCharitable trust, religious trust, private family trustForm 94
AAssociation of Persons (AOP)People or bodies that join for a common purpose, such as a joint venture. Registered societies and cooperatives are listed under the AOP/BOI documentsForm 94
BBody of Individuals (BOI)A group made up only of individuals acting togetherForm 94
LLocal authorityMunicipal corporation, municipality, panchayatForm 94
JArtificial Juridical Person (AJP)A body the law treats as a separate "person" that fits no other groupForm 94
GGovernment agencyA person acting for a central or state government or UT officeForm 94
Important

Pick the status carefully. It is built into the PAN itself. A company that applies as a firm gets the wrong 4th letter. If that happens, contact Protean or UTIITSL; it may need a fresh application and surrender of the wrong PAN.

How do you read an entity's PAN?

Every PAN has 10 characters: 5 letters, 4 numbers, 1 letter. Two positions carry meaning.

PositionWhat it meansExample: "Rama Traders Pvt Ltd"
1–3A letter series from AAA to ZZZABC
4Holder type (status)C (company)
5For entities: first letter of the entity's name. For a person: first letter of the surname.R (Rama)
6–9Running number from 0001 to 99991234
10A check letterK

So the example PAN looks like ABCCR1234K. This is a dummy number for illustration, not a real PAN.

Tip

Use this to check a supplier's or customer's PAN on an invoice. A company invoice showing a PAN with P as the 4th letter is probably the owner's personal PAN, or a typing error. Confirm with them before filing TDS or GST returns. You can also verify a PAN online for free.

Why does an entity need its own PAN?

A company, LLP, firm, trust or HUF is a separate taxpayer from its owners or members. In practice it needs its own PAN to:

  • open a bank account in its own name;
  • register for GST, which is issued on the PAN;
  • file its own income tax return;
  • have tax deducted at the normal rate when others pay it (without a PAN, deductions are usually at a higher rate);
  • buy or sell property and investments in its own name.

The partners' or directors' own PANs don't replace the entity's PAN. An HUF's PAN is also separate from the karta's personal PAN. For the full list of deals that need a PAN, see where PAN is mandatory.

Does a new company or LLP need to apply for PAN separately?

Not necessarily. The Income Tax Department says domestic companies and LLPs can apply for PAN through MCA's common application form while they register. For companies, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs says the PAN and TAN allotted by the Income Tax Department appear on the Certificate of Incorporation.

Use Form 94 for a company or LLP only if it already exists and somehow has no PAN. Partnership firms, trusts, HUFs, societies and the other groups don't register through MCA, so they always apply on Form 94.

Tip

Check the Certificate of Incorporation before paying anyone for a "company PAN". If the PAN is printed there, you already have it. You can download its e-PAN from Protean or UTIITSL.

Which documents does each entity need?

For entities, one registration document usually proves identity, address and date of formation together. This list follows the Income Tax Department's document table for Form 94 (Rule 158, Income-tax Rules, 2026).

EntityDocument to give (any one)"Date" on the form means

What else to keep ready

  • Representative's details and proof: Form 94 has a section for a Representative Assessee or Authorised Representative (name, PAN or Aadhaar, Indian address, mobile and email). Their ID proof and address proof are mandatory.
  • Mobile number and email of the entity: both are mandatory.
  • Communication address proof: if letters should go to an address other than the office address, give proof for that address too.
  • Registration number: mandatory for companies and LLPs.

Protean's photo instructions apply to individuals; entity applications don't need a photo. Seal or stamp is not required on the form.

Who signs the PAN application, and who can pay?

An entity can't sign for itself, so a person signs for it. Protean lists who signs the acknowledgement and who may pay the fee online:

EntitySigns the acknowledgementMay pay online
CompanyA directorAny director
Firm or LLPA partnerAny partner
HUFThe kartaThe karta
TrustA trusteeNot listed by Protean (check on the portal)
AOP, BOI, AJP, local authorityAn authorised signatoryAn authorised signatory

If the signatory uses a thumb impression instead of a signature, it must be attested by a Magistrate, Notary Public or another officer named in the form's instructions.

How do you apply for an entity PAN on Form 94?

The steps below are for Protean. UTIITSL works the same way, and both charge the same fee. Keep scans of the registration document and the signatory's ID ready.

Form 94 for an Indian entity, step by step
  1. Open Protean or UTIITSL and choose Form 94 (Indian entity)
  2. Pick the right status: company, firm/LLP, trust, HUF, AOP …
  3. Fill the full name, date of formation, addresses, income source and AO code
  4. Do you have the registration document and the signatory's ID? No: get the deed, certificate or notarised HUF affidavit first (documents)
  5. Pay ₹66–₹107 and save the 15-digit acknowledgement number
  6. Sign digitally, or post the signed acknowledgement with documents within 15 days
  7. PAN allotted: e-PAN by email, card by post if chosen
  1. Open the application page and choose Form 94

On Protean, go to onlineservices.proteantech.in → PAN → Apply Online. On UTIITSL, go to pan.utiitsl.com. Choose the new-PAN form for an Indian entity (Form 94).

  2. Select the entity's category

Choose company, firm/LLP, trust, HUF, AOP, BOI, local authority, AJP or government. Use the status table if unsure. Enter the entity's name and email, the mobile number, and submit.

You'll know it worked when a token number appears and arrives by email. It lets you return and finish later.

  3. Fill the form exactly as on the registration document

Write the full name from the first box, with no "M/s" in front. Companies must not shorten their name (write "Private Limited", not "Pvt Ltd"). Add the date of formation, office address, communication address, registration number and source of income. Protean and UTIITSL help you find the AO code (your tax office code) by city. See how to find your AO code.

If the name on your deed and your bank documents differ: follow the registration document. A mismatch can delay the application.

  4. Add the representative and the documents

Fill the representative section and choose how you'll submit documents. Protean's paperless options include e-Sign or a DSC (digital signature certificate) with scanned documents. The portal shows which options fit your category.

  5. Choose card or e-PAN only, then pay

Check the fee table. Paperless applications are paid by debit card, credit card or net banking. The person paying should be the director, partner, karta or authorised signatory, as shown above.

You'll know it worked when the acknowledgement and payment receipt arrive by email as PDFs, with a 15-digit acknowledgement number.

  6. Sign digitally, or post the papers

If you signed digitally, nothing needs to be posted. Otherwise print the acknowledgement, have the authorised signatory sign it, and send it with document copies to the address printed on the acknowledgement. Write "APPLICATION FOR PAN – N-[15-digit acknowledgement number]" on the envelope.

Papers must reach Protean within 15 days of applying online. If papers arrive late, the application may be delayed or rejected.

  7. Track and download the e-PAN

Track with the acknowledgement number on the same site you used. After allotment the e-PAN comes by email, and the card follows by post if you chose one. Check PAN application status →

How much does a PAN for a company or firm cost?

Entities pay the same official fee as individuals. These amounts include GST.

What you getPhysical documents / at a centrePaperless online
Printed card + e-PAN, Indian address₹107₹101
Printed card + e-PAN, foreign address₹1,017₹1,011
e-PAN only (no card)₹72₹66

The Income Tax Department's PAN page adds an e-Sign charge of ₹5.90 for digital applications.

Tip

A CA, shop or agent may charge for filling the form. That's a service fee, separate from the official fee. Ask for the official receipt showing ₹66–₹107.

What are the Form 94 filling rules?

Form 94 replaced the entity part of the old Form 49A on 1 April 2026. It comes under the Income-tax Act, 2025 (PAN is now section 262) and Rule 158 of the Income-tax Rules, 2026. PANs issued earlier are reported to remain valid.

RuleWhat it means for you

What happens after the PAN is allotted?

Changing the name, address or other details

Entities use Form CR-02 (individuals use CR-01) on Protean or UTIITSL. Typical cases: a firm adds a partner and changes its name, a company moves its registered office, or a trust changes its address. Give the document that proves the change, such as an updated deed or an MCA certificate. How PAN correction works →

Lost the card

Order a reprint, or download the e-PAN, using the entity's PAN and its date of incorporation or formation. Reprint a PAN card →

Two PANs for one entity

An entity can hold only one PAN. If it has two, for example because a firm applied again after losing the card, surrender the extra one. How to surrender a duplicate PAN →

Branches

Branches generally use the company's single PAN; they don't get separate PANs.

Opening the entity's e-PAN and tax files

For an entity, the e-PAN PDF password is widely reported to be the date of incorporation or formation as DDMMYYYY. Our e-PAN password helper writes it for you. AIS PDFs use the PAN in small letters plus that date. Our unlock tool for income tax files builds these passwords in your browser.

Living outside India?

Foreign entities and partners abroad

  • An entity formed outside India (foreign company, LLP, firm, trust or other body) applies on Form 96, not Form 94. Its foreign tax ID (TIN) is mandatory.
  • Proof: a registration certificate from the country where it is located, apostilled (Hague Convention countries) or attested by an Indian embassy, high commission or consulate, or by authorised officials of overseas branches of scheduled banks registered in India. Or an Indian registration certificate, or approval to set up an office in India.
  • A card posted abroad costs ₹1,017 (₹1,011 paperless). e-PAN only costs ₹72 (₹66 paperless).
  • An Indian firm or company with partners or directors abroad still uses Form 94.
  • Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) apply through SEBI's common application form.

Warning

Fake "company PAN registration" sites

  • The official fee for an entity PAN is ₹66 to ₹107 in India. Sites charging ₹1,000 or more for "company PAN registration" are charging a service fee, and some are not genuine.
  • Apply only on proteantech.in or utiitsl.com, or through MCA during incorporation. Check the address bar before paying.
  • Never give a stranger the signatory's e-Sign OTP or DSC password. Either one signs documents in the entity's name.
  • An entity's PAN, with its incorporation documents, can be misused to open accounts or take GST registrations. Share copies only with people you trust, and write the purpose on the copy.

Frequently asked questions

Does a sole proprietorship need a separate PAN?

No. A sole proprietorship is not a separate legal person, so the owner's personal PAN is used for the business, including bank accounts, GST and tax returns.

Does a new private limited company have to apply for PAN?

Not necessarily. Domestic companies can apply through MCA's common application form while incorporating, and the PAN appears on the Certificate of Incorporation. Use Form 94 only if an existing company has no PAN.

Can a partnership firm get a PAN without registration?

Yes. The document list accepts a registration certificate from the Registrar of Firms or a copy of the partnership deed. So an unregistered firm can apply with its deed.

Can an HUF get a PAN if the karta already has one?

Yes. The HUF is a separate taxpayer with its own PAN (4th letter H). The karta applies on Form 94 with a notarised affidavit listing every coparcener, plus the karta's own ID, address and date-of-birth proof.

Can a trust apply without registration?

Yes. A copy of the trust deed is accepted. A Charity Commissioner's registration certificate is the other option.

Can a company use Instant e-PAN?

No. Instant e-PAN works only for individuals with Aadhaar. Entities apply on Form 94, or through MCA when incorporating.

Does a company or firm PAN need to be linked with Aadhaar?

No. Linking applies to individuals who can get Aadhaar. A company, LLP, firm, trust or HUF has no Aadhaar, so its PAN has nothing to link. Directors, partners and the karta must still link their own personal PANs, unless they are exempt.

Is a photo or company seal needed?

No. Protean's photo instructions apply to individuals, and Protean says a seal or stamp is not required on Forms 93 and 94.

Is the fee different for companies?

No. Entities pay the same official fees: ₹107 with a printed card in India, ₹72 for e-PAN only, and slightly less if paperless.

How do we change the company's address on its PAN?

File Form CR-02 (the change request form for non-individuals) on Protean or UTIITSL with proof of the new address.

Do branches of a company need separate PANs?

No. One entity has one PAN. All its branches use that PAN.

Which letter shows that a PAN belongs to a company?

The 4th letter. C means company, F means firm or LLP, H means HUF, T means trust and P means an individual.

Bottom line

Work out your entity's status first, because it becomes part of the PAN. New companies and LLPs can get PAN through MCA; every other Indian entity uses Form 94 with its registration document and a signatory's ID. Pay only ₹66–₹107, and keep the acknowledgement number. For help, call Protean on 020-27218080.
