How Do You Check Your KYC Status with PAN for Mutual Funds and Demat?

Your securities-market KYC is stored by a KYC Registration Agency (KRA). Open any KRA website, such as CVL KRA, choose KYC Inquiry, enter your PAN and the captcha, and submit. "KYC Validated" means you can invest anywhere. "KYC Registered" works with your existing funds. "On Hold" needs a fix, usually mobile or email verification.

What does "KYC status with PAN" actually mean?

KYC means Know Your Customer: proving who you are and where you live. When you start investing in mutual funds or open a demat or trading account, the fund house or broker does your KYC once. It then uploads your record to a KYC Registration Agency (KRA).

A KRA is an agency registered with SEBI, the stock market regulator. It keeps KYC records in one place, so the next fund house or broker can reuse them. Each KYC record is tagged to one PAN. That is why your PAN is all you need to look up the status.

PAN is mandatory for securities-market transactions, but SEBI's FAQs say PAN by itself is not accepted as proof of identity for KYC. You still need an officially valid document such as Aadhaar, a passport, a driving licence or a voter ID. For where else PAN is compulsory, see where PAN is mandatory.

Which KRAs hold your KYC?

SEBI's list of registered KYC Registration Agencies shows these names:

KRA (as named by SEBI)Common nameSEBI registration no.

NSDL Database Management LimitedNDML KRAIN/KRA/002/2012

Karvy Data Management Services LimitedKarvy KRAIN/KRA/005/2012
KFIN Services Private LimitedKFin KRAIN/KRA/007/2025

NSE's KRA, run by NSE Data & Analytics Limited (registration IN/KRA/003/2012), is no longer on the list. NSE's stock exchange filing of 14 April 2026 says the KRA business was sold to CAMS Investor Services. SEBI accepted the surrender of the registration on 13 April 2026.

Tip

Start with one KRA. SEBI's FAQs say each KYC record is unique and tagged to a single PAN. If one site says "not found", try CAMS KRA or another KRA before redoing KYC.

How do you check your KYC status on a KRA website?

The steps below use CVL KRA's public KYC Inquiry page, which we checked on 16 Oct 2026. Other KRAs work in a similar way, but their screens differ.

Checking KYC status with PAN on CVL KRA
  1. Open cvlkra.com and choose KYC Inquiry
  2. Enter your 10-character PAN and the captcha, then Submit
  3. The KRA shows your KYC status for that PAN
  4. Does it say KYC Validated? No: see what your status means and how to fix it
  5. KYC Validated: no action needed
  1. Open the KYC Inquiry page

Go to cvlkra.com and choose KYC Inquiry from the menu. Type the address yourself rather than tapping a link in a message.

  2. Enter your PAN and the captcha

Type your PAN in the PAN box, for example ABCPK1234X (a dummy number). Type the captcha text and press Submit. The page also allows a search by name, date of birth and exempt category, for people exempt from giving PAN.

If it says no record: check the PAN for typing errors, then try another KRA. If no KRA has a record, you have not done securities-market KYC yet.

  3. Read the status and the KRA name

Note the status and which KRA holds your record. Compare it with the status table below.

You'll know it worked when the page shows a status line for your PAN, such as KYC Validated, KYC Registered or On Hold.

Got a locked statement by email? An NSDL or CDSL demat statement (e-CAS) opens with your PAN in capital letters. Our file unlock tool opens it inside your browser.

What does each KYC status mean?

These meanings come from CVL KRA's inquiry page and a Karvy KRA circular of 26 May 2024 that explains SEBI's revised checks.

StatusWhat the KRA has checkedWhat you can do
KYC ValidatedPAN, name and date of birth against Income Tax records; name and address against the source (such as Aadhaar); mobile and email; PAN–Aadhaar link (or an exempt or operative PAN)Nothing to do. Your KYC is portable: you can invest with any fund house or broker without fresh KYC.
KYC RegisteredPAN, name and date of birth checked, and at least one of mobile or email verified. But a check is missing: for example, your address could not be checked against its source, or the PAN–Aadhaar link was not confirmed.Keep using existing investments. CVL says a new fund may need fresh KYC, or a KYC update with PAN and Aadhaar so it becomes Validated.
On HoldNeither mobile nor email is verified, or another problem was found, such as PAN validation failure or missing documentsFix the reason first. The reason shows on your fund house's or RTA's website. See how to fix On Hold.
RejectedThe KYC record was not acceptedFind the reason through your fund house, RTA or broker, and submit KYC again with correct documents.

An RTA is a registrar and transfer agent: the company that keeps mutual fund records for fund houses. KRA sites may show other labels too. If you see one that isn't here, ask the fund house or broker that did your KYC.

Why does KYC go On Hold?

SEBI tightened KRA checks with a circular of 12 October 2023 and then eased them with a circular dated 14 May 2024 (SEBI/HO/MIRSD/SECFATF/P/CIR/2024/41). KRAs applied the revised checks from 1 June 2024. Under the revised rules, these are the common reasons for On Hold:

  • Mobile and email both unverified. The Karvy KRA circular says a record stays On Hold when neither the mobile number nor the email has been verified at the KRA.
  • PAN validation failed. The PAN, name or date of birth in your KYC doesn't match Income Tax records. You can compare your details with our guide to verify a PAN online.
  • Missing or invalid documents. CVL lists this among the reasons shown by fund houses and RTAs.

Before June 2024, many records were also held because PAN and Aadhaar weren't linked. Under the May 2024 circular, KRAs moved individual records held only for that reason to KYC Registered. An unlinked PAN now mainly stops your KYC from becoming Validated and portable. To check your linking, see PAN–Aadhaar link status.

Myth

"If my PAN isn't linked with Aadhaar, I can't invest in mutual funds at all." Not true. SEBI's KYC FAQs say a client with a valid PAN can keep transacting with their existing intermediary even if the link isn't verified. Only portability of the KYC to a new intermediary is blocked.

Important

An inoperative PAN is a different problem from an unlinked one. It can cause higher tax deduction and other trouble. If your PAN has become inoperative, read inoperative PAN: effects and reactivation and ask your fund house how it affects your folio.

How do you fix On Hold by verifying your mobile and email?

CVL KRA runs a public KYC Validation page for this. We describe the fields it showed on 16 Oct 2026. Use a mobile number and email you can access right now.

Verifying mobile and email on CVL KRA's KYC Validation page
  1. Open the KYC Validation link on cvlkra.com
  2. Enter your PAN and the captcha
  3. Generate and enter OTPs sent to your mobile and your email
  4. Is your PAN linked with Aadhaar? No: link it on the e-Filing portal (how), or pick Not Applicable if you are exempt
  5. Accept the terms and Submit
  6. KRA updates your record; check the status again later
  1. Open KYC Validation and enter your PAN

On cvlkra.com, choose KYC Validation. It opens a "KRA Verification" page. Enter your PAN Number and the captcha.

  2. Verify your mobile and email by OTP

Enter your mobile number and press Generate OTP, then type the OTP and press Verify. Do the same for your email ID.

If the OTP doesn't arrive: use Resend OTP, check your spam folder, and confirm the number has no typing error.

  3. Accept the terms and submit

Tick the box accepting CVL's terms and press Submit. Then check your status again on KYC Inquiry after some time. The page doesn't say how long the update takes.

You'll know it worked when the mobile and email fields show as verified, and the KYC Inquiry status later changes from On Hold.

If the status doesn't change: the hold may be for another reason. Ask your fund house, RTA or broker, who can see the exact reason.

You can also update your mobile number and email through the fund house, RTA or broker that did your KYC. Their forms and steps differ, so follow the instructions on their own website.

How do you move from Registered to Validated, or fix rejected KYC?

From KYC Registered to KYC Validated

Registered usually means your address proof could not be checked against its source. CVL's guidance is to redo KYC, or update your KYC with PAN and Aadhaar (Aadhaar XML, DigiLocker or mAadhaar), so the KRA can verify it. In practice this goes through a fund house, an RTA or a broker. Many offer online KYC using Aadhaar or DigiLocker. Aadhaar-based KYC uses an OTP on the mobile linked with Aadhaar, and the address in Aadhaar. If either is old, update it in Aadhaar first: mobile number or address.

Rejected or stuck KYC

Ask the fund house, RTA or broker for the exact reason. Fix it, and submit KYC again with an officially valid document. If a KYC complaint goes unanswered, file it on SEBI's SCORES portal. SEBI's FAQs say KYC complaints there must be resolved within 21 days.

Changing your name or address in KYC

SEBI's FAQs say a name change needs a KYC modification form plus a self-attested document showing the new name. Update your PAN first so both match. See change your name in PAN and correct your date of birth in PAN. If your PAN and Aadhaar names differ, compare them first with our PAN vs Aadhaar name checker.

Tip

SEBI's FAQs say the KRA sends you an alert whenever an intermediary downloads or changes your KYC. Keep your mobile and email current so you see these alerts.

KYC status for NRIs and PIOs

  • Checking status works from anywhere: a KRA website needs only your PAN and a captcha.
  • SEBI's FAQs say NRIs and PIOs give a passport, a PIO or OCI card, and overseas address proof for KYC.
  • NRIs without Aadhaar are exempt from PAN–Aadhaar linking only if they update their residential status to Non-Resident on the Income Tax portal. SEBI says the exemption is not automatic.
  • Email OTPs reach you anywhere. Whether a KRA page sends OTPs to a foreign mobile number isn't stated; if it fails, update details through your fund house or broker.
  • NRIs follow the same digital KYC rules as residents, subject to RBI and FEMA rules for investing. PAN for NRIs and foreign citizens →

Warning

"Your KYC is on hold" scams

  • Fraudsters send messages saying your mutual fund or demat KYC will be blocked unless you click a link. Check your status yourself by typing the KRA address.
  • Treat any call or message asking for an OTP as a red flag. A KYC OTP lets someone change your contact details.
  • No one needs your demat or net banking password to "update KYC".
  • Don't install screen-sharing apps at a caller's request.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my mutual fund KYC status with PAN?

Open a KRA website such as cvlkra.com, choose KYC Inquiry, enter your PAN and the captcha, and submit. The page shows your status and which KRA holds your record.

Do I need to check every KRA?

Usually not. SEBI's FAQs say each KYC record is unique and tagged to a single PAN. If one KRA says no record, try a second KRA before redoing KYC.

What is the difference between KYC Validated and KYC Registered?

Validated means every check passed, including source checks, mobile, email and the PAN–Aadhaar link, so your KYC is portable. Registered means PAN details and at least one contact were verified, but a check is missing, such as the address source or the PAN–Aadhaar link. You can keep existing investments.

Can I invest in a new mutual fund with KYC Registered status?

CVL says a new fund may need fresh KYC, or a KYC update with PAN and Aadhaar so it becomes Validated. Existing investments continue.

Why is my KYC On Hold?

Usually because neither your mobile nor your email was verified at the KRA. Other reasons include PAN validation failure and missing documents. Your fund house or RTA website shows the exact reason.

Can I invest if my PAN is not linked with Aadhaar?

SEBI's FAQs say you can keep transacting with your existing intermediary if your PAN is valid, but your KYC can't be ported to a new one. Linking is still required by law unless you are exempt.

Is a CKYC number the same as KRA KYC?

No. CKYC is a central registry run by CERSAI that gives a 14-digit KYC Identification Number. KRA KYC is the securities-market record tagged to your PAN. Intermediaries upload KYC to both.

Does bank KYC count for mutual funds?

No. Bank KYC is held by your bank. Mutual fund and demat KYC is held by a KRA. Updating one doesn't update the other.

Is PAN enough as ID proof for KYC?

No. PAN is mandatory for securities-market transactions, but SEBI's FAQs say it is not an officially valid document for proof of identity. You also need Aadhaar, a passport, a driving licence, a voter ID or another listed document.

Where can I complain about KYC problems?

First write to the fund house, RTA or broker. If unresolved, file on SEBI's SCORES portal; SEBI's FAQs say KYC complaints must be resolved within 21 days.

Bottom line

Check your KYC on any KRA website with your PAN. Aim for KYC Validated. If it is On Hold, verify your mobile and email first, then check that your PAN, name and date of birth match. Link PAN with Aadhaar to make your KYC portable. For PAN help, call Protean on 020-27218080 or UTIITSL on 033-40802999.
