Linking your Aadhaar Card with your bank account is required to receive Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) payments from the Government of India - this includes LPG subsidy, PM-KISAN payments, scholarship disbursements, MNREGA wages, and dozens of other central and state government scheme payments. When you link Aadhaar to your bank account, the bank uploads your Aadhaar number to the NPCI mapper (National Payments Corporation of India) which routes DBT transactions to the correct bank. Importantly, NPCI does NOT store your actual bank account number - it only stores your Aadhaar number and your bank's IIN (Institution Identification Number). You can link Aadhaar with your bank account online through net banking or mobile banking, at the ATM, via SMS, or by visiting your bank branch in person.
Why You Need to Link Aadhaar with Your Bank Account
- DBT payments: All Direct Benefit Transfer scheme payments from the government - LPG subsidy, PM-KISAN, scholarships, MNREGA wages - go only to an Aadhaar-linked bank account
- Ration card benefits: PDS food grain subsidy where DBT mode is active goes to the Aadhaar-linked bank account
- One DBT account only: You can only have one bank account designated as your primary DBT account at any time. If you have multiple accounts with Aadhaar seeded, only the one mapped in NPCI receives DBT credits
- KYC compliance: Banks require Aadhaar-based KYC for full-service accounts under Prevention of Money Laundering rules
Important Things to Know Before You Start
- Your Aadhaar Card must be active and not locked before you can link it to a bank account
- Your Aadhaar mobile number must be active if you are using the online method - OTP will be sent to the registered number
- Only one account can be the primary DBT-enabled account. If you want to change which account receives DBT, you need to request re-seeding in the new account - the bank will update the NPCI mapper
- NPCI mapper stores only your Aadhaar number and your bank's IIN - it does NOT store your account number, IFSC code, or branch address
- Just knowing your Aadhaar number and your bank account number does not allow anyone to withdraw money from your account - confirmed from uidai.gov.in
Method 1 - Online via Net Banking
Most banks allow Aadhaar seeding through their net banking portal:
- Log in to your bank's net banking portal with your user ID and password.
- Look for the Aadhaar seeding option under one of these sections depending on your bank: Services, My Accounts, Update KYC, or Profile.
- Select the account you want to link with Aadhaar.
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
- Confirm the details. The bank will use your Aadhaar number to fetch your KYC details from UIDAI.
- An OTP is sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number. Enter the OTP to authenticate.
- After successful submission, the bank updates the NPCI mapper. You will receive an SMS confirmation once the seeding is complete - usually within 24 to 48 hours.
Method 2 - Online via Mobile Banking App
- Open your bank's official mobile banking app.
- Go to Services or My Profile section.
- Select Link Aadhaar or Aadhaar Seeding.
- Select the account to link.
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and confirm.
- Verify via OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
- Once confirmed, seeding is processed by the bank within 24 to 48 hours.
Method 3 - At the Bank Branch (Offline)
This is the official UIDAI recommended method, confirmed from the DBT FAQ at uidai.gov.in:
- Visit the branch where your bank account is held.
- Collect the mandate and consent form for Aadhaar linking from the bank counter.
- Fill in your name, bank account number, and 12-digit Aadhaar number.
- Sign the form as consent to use your Aadhaar for KYC and DBT purposes.
- Submit the form at the counter along with a self-attested copy of your Aadhaar.
- The bank staff will process the seeding and provide you an acknowledgement.
- You will receive an SMS on your bank-registered mobile once the Aadhaar is successfully linked to your account and updated on the NPCI mapper.
Method 4 - Via ATM
Many banks allow Aadhaar seeding at their ATMs:
- Visit your bank's ATM and insert your debit card.
- Enter your PIN and select Services or More Options from the menu.
- Look for Aadhaar Seeding or Link Aadhaar option.
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
- Confirm the details. The request is submitted to the bank for processing.
- You will receive an SMS confirmation once seeding is complete.
Not all banks offer this at ATMs. If the option is not available, use net banking, mobile banking, or visit the branch.
Method 5 - Via SMS
Some banks allow Aadhaar seeding via SMS from your registered mobile number. The SMS format varies by bank. Common formats:
- SBI: UID <Aadhaar number> <Account number> - send to 567676
- Other banks: Check your bank's official website or customer care for the specific SMS format and number
Note: SMS-based seeding is not available at all banks. Confirm your bank's supported channels from your bank's official website or customer care number before attempting.
How to Check Aadhaar-Bank Account Linking Status
Check whether your Aadhaar is linked to your bank account on the official UIDAI myAadhaar portal:
- Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/bank-seeding-status.
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
- Enter the security captcha code.
- Click Send OTP. An OTP is sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
- Enter the OTP and click Submit.

Important: This status is fetched from the NPCI server. UIDAI states that it is not responsible for the correctness of the displayed status and does not store the information fetched from NPCI.
What is NPCI Mapper and How Does It Work
When you link Aadhaar Card with your bank account, your bank uploads your Aadhaar number and its own IIN (Institution Identification Number) to the NPCI mapper - a central database maintained by the National Payments Corporation of India. When the government sends a DBT payment for you, it sends it using your Aadhaar number. The NPCI mapper matches your Aadhaar to the IIN of your bank, and the payment is routed to that bank. The bank then credits it to your linked account internally.
Key facts about NPCI mapper confirmed from npci.org.in:
- NPCI mapper stores only your Aadhaar number and the IIN of your bank
- It does NOT store your actual account number, IFSC code, or branch address
- Only one Aadhaar-IIN mapping is active for DBT at any time
- If you link Aadhaar to a new bank account, the bank updates NPCI mapper and the old mapping is replaced for DBT purposes
How to Change Your DBT-Linked Bank Account
If you want DBT payments to go to a different bank account:
- Visit the branch of the new bank where you want to receive DBT payments.
- Fill the mandate and consent form with your Aadhaar number and the new account details.
- The new bank will update the NPCI mapper with the new IIN. This replaces the old mapping.
- DBT payments will now be routed to the new bank account going forward.
- Check the updated status on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/bank-seeding-status after 2 to 3 working days.
Common Problems and Solutions
| Problem | Likely Reason | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| DBT payment not received despite linking | Aadhaar not updated in NPCI mapper yet, or wrong account selected | Check status at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/bank-seeding-status. If bank shown is incorrect, re-seed in the correct bank. |

| Bank says Aadhaar already linked to another account | Previous bank has Aadhaar seeded in NPCI mapper | Request the new bank to re-seed. The new bank will update NPCI mapper and replace the old mapping. |
| Status shows "not linked" even after bank confirmation | Bank has not yet uploaded to NPCI mapper | Wait 2 to 3 working days after bank confirmation. Check again. If still not updated, contact bank customer care. |
| Account closed but Aadhaar still shown as linked | Bank has not de-seeded on NPCI mapper | Contact the bank and request de-seeding before closing the account. Then re-seed in the new account. |
