This free Advance Tax Calculator for 2026-27 calculates the amount payable by 15 June, 15 September, 15 December and 15 March. It also considers the advance tax you have already paid and shows the remaining amount against each instalment.

Advance Tax Rules Under the Income-tax Act, 2025

The Income-tax Act, 2025 provides the rules for advance tax payments for Tax Year 2026-27. Sections 403 to 408 deal with liability, computation and payment of advance tax.

Who Is Required to Pay Advance Tax?

Under Section 404, a taxpayer generally needs to pay advance tax when the estimated tax payable for the year is ₹10,000 or more after considering the applicable tax deductions and collections.

This requirement can apply to individuals, HUFs, firms, companies and other taxpayers. A salaried person is not automatically exempt. If the employer's TDS does not cover the estimated tax liability and the remaining amount reaches the prescribed threshold, the individual may also need to pay advance tax.

Senior Citizen Exemption

A resident individual who is 60 years of age or older and does not have income chargeable under the head Profits and Gains of Business or Profession is not liable to pay advance tax.

This exemption does not apply to a senior citizen who has business or professional income. Such a taxpayer must check the normal advance tax provisions.

Advance Tax Due Dates for Tax Year 2026-27

Most taxpayers have to pay advance tax in four instalments. Each instalment represents a cumulative percentage of the total advance tax liability.

Due date Minimum cumulative amount payable
15 June 2026 15%
15 September 2026 45%
15 December 2026 75%
15 March 2027 100%

These percentages are cumulative. For example, the 45% requirement by 15 September includes the 15% amount due in June. It does not mean that you have to pay another 45% in September.

Special Due Date for Certain Presumptive Taxpayers

Section 408(2) provides a different payment schedule for taxpayers declaring profits under Section 58(2), Table Sl. No. 1 or 3. These taxpayers can pay the entire advance tax liability by 15 March 2027.

The goods-carriage category listed under Section 58(2), Table Sl. No. 2 does not fall under this particular one-instalment provision. The regular instalment schedule applies to that category.

Example of Advance Tax Calculation

Suppose your estimated total tax liability for Tax Year 2026-27 is ₹1,20,000 and you expect TDS of ₹10,000 during the year.

Your estimated advance tax liability will be ₹1,10,000 after reducing TDS. The instalment targets will be calculated on this amount.

Due date Required cumulative percentage Cumulative amount
15 June 2026 15% ₹16,500
15 September 2026 45% ₹49,500
15 December 2026 75% ₹82,500
15 March 2027 100% ₹1,10,000

If you have already paid ₹54,000 as advance tax by 15 December, your cumulative payment is higher than the required ₹82,500 target? No. You would still need to pay ₹28,500 to reach the December target.

If you have already paid ₹54,000, the correct shortfall is ₹28,500 (₹82,500 minus ₹54,000). The remaining amount after that payment would be ₹27,500, payable by 15 March 2027.

What Happens If You Miss an Advance Tax Instalment?

Missing an advance tax instalment or paying less than the required amount may result in interest under Section 425 of the Income-tax Act, 2025.

The applicable interest provisions generally use the following rates for shortfalls against the instalment targets:

Instalment due date Required cumulative payment Interest rate specified for the relevant period
15 June 2026 15% 3%
15 September 2026 45% 3%
15 December 2026 75% 3%
15 March 2027 100% 1%

These are the statutory interest amounts for the respective instalment periods, not annual interest rates. The exact interest liability depends on the applicable provisions and the shortfall.

Section 425 also provides relief from interest under the relevant instalment provision if the taxpayer has paid at least 12% of the advance tax by 15 June or at least 36% by 15 September, subject to the conditions in the section.

Interest for Short Payment of Advance Tax

Section 424 may also apply when a taxpayer has not paid advance tax or the advance tax paid is less than 90% of the assessed tax. The section provides interest at 1% for every month or part of a month for the specified period.

Therefore, paying the instalments on time is important. If your income estimate changes during the year, revise the remaining instalments instead of relying on an outdated estimate.
