FASTag is India's official electronic toll collection system that lets vehicles pay highway toll automatically without stopping at the toll booth. A small RFID sticker affixed to the windshield of your vehicle communicates with the scanner at the toll plaza, and the exact toll amount is deducted from your linked account in seconds while your vehicle stays in motion.
FASTag is mandatory for all four-wheelers and above in India since 1 January 2021. Vehicles entering a FASTag lane without a valid, active FASTag are charged double the applicable toll amount. As of now, FASTag is operational at all National Highway toll plazas and many State Highway toll plazas across India.
What is FASTag?
FASTag is a device that employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making toll payments directly while the vehicle is in motion. As per the official FAQ published by Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) on nhai.gov.in, FASTag is affixed on the windscreen of the vehicle and enables a customer to make toll payments directly from the account linked to FASTag.
In simple terms, think of FASTag as a rechargeable digital wallet sticker for your vehicle. You load money into it, stick it on your windshield, and every time you pass a toll plaza, the toll amount is deducted automatically. You receive an SMS confirmation on your registered mobile number for every deduction.
FASTag is part of India's National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme, which aims to make highway travel faster, cashless, and transparent across the entire country.
Who Implements FASTag in India?
FASTag is a flagship programme of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The three key organisations involved in its implementation are:
| Organisation | Role | Official Website |
|---|---|---|
| Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) | Policy making, mandatory rules, legislative amendments under CMVR 1989 | morth.nic.in |
| National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) | Programme oversight, toll plaza management, NHAI FASTag variant | nhai.gov.in |
| Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) | Mandated implementing agency, bank certification, exempted FASTag issuance, helpline 1033 | fastag.ihmcl.com |
| National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) | Clearing and Settlement House (CCH) services for all FASTag transactions | npci.org.in |
Currently, 32 Banks and Non-Banking Financial Companies have been certified by IHMCL for the issuance of FASTag in India and certain banks have been certified to carry out acquiring services at toll plazas.
How FASTag Works - The Full Technical Flow
When you drive through a FASTag lane at a toll plaza, this is exactly what happens in the background:
- Your vehicle enters the FASTag lane and the RFID reader installed at the toll lane detects the FASTag sticker on your windshield.
- A transaction file is created by the ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) System Integrator at the toll plaza.
- This transaction file is sent to the acquirer bank of the toll plaza.
- The acquirer bank passes the transaction to your issuer bank through the CCH service provider, which is NPCI.
- The exact toll amount is deducted from your FASTag account and passed on to the concessionaire or toll operator account.
- You receive an SMS alert on your registered mobile number confirming the deduction and the amount.
The entire process happens in a few seconds while your vehicle is in motion, which is why FASTag lanes are also called Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) lanes or near non-stop lanes.
Is FASTag Mandatory in India?
Yes. FASTag is mandatory in India on two counts, both established through amendments in the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) 1989 by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways:
- For vehicle use on roads: FASTag is mandatory for all Class M and N vehicles, meaning four-wheelers and above carrying goods and/or passengers, with effect from 1 January 2021.
- For motor vehicle insurance: FASTag is mandatory while getting new third-party insurance with effect from 1 April 2021.
MoRTH has directed that all lanes in each direction at toll plazas be converted to FASTag lanes. A vehicle without a valid FASTag entering a FASTag lane is charged double the applicable toll amount in cash. FASTag applies to all categories, kinds, makes, and types of four-wheelers and above.
FASTag Charges - What You Pay to Get One
The cost of getting a FASTag has three components as confirmed on nhai.gov.in:
| Component | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tag cost (maximum regulated price) | Rs 100 including GST | Government has regulated this as the maximum price for the physical tag |
| Security deposit | Rs 200 (usual) | Refundable. Varies depending on vehicle class and bank |
| First recharge amount | Rs 200 (usual) | Loaded into your FASTag wallet as usable balance |
The minimum recharge amount depends on the issuing bank. Some banks allow very small recharges, while others may have higher minimum limits. The FASTag physical sticker itself is valid for 5 years. You only need to keep recharging your wallet as per usage.

FASTag Validity
The physical FASTag sticker is valid for 5 years from the date of purchase. After 5 years, you need to get a replacement tag from your issuing bank. The wallet linked to the FASTag has no expiry as long as the account remains active and sufficiently funded.
Passes and Discounts Available on FASTag
All government-approved discounts and passes are configured directly in FASTag. You do not need a separate arrangement for these.
- Monthly Pass: Available for frequent users of a specific toll plaza. Can be purchased online via the IHMCL portal or at the toll plaza POS.
- Local Exemption: If you reside within 10 km of a toll plaza, you are eligible for local concessions. These can be configured at the toll plaza level itself through FASTag only.
- Return Journey Discount: Applicable at select toll plazas and configured in FASTag.
- Annual Pass: A new Rs 3,000 annual pass for private non-commercial cars (Car, Jeep, Van) valid for one year or 200 trips on National Highways and National Expressways, whichever comes first. Activated through the Rajmargyatra app at rajmargyatra.nhai.gov.in or the NHAI website.
Who is Exempt from Paying Toll via FASTag?
Certain categories of vehicles are exempt from paying toll fees on National Highways as per the NH Fee Rules. However, even exempt vehicles are required to affix the FASTag RFID sticker on their windshield. Exempt FASTags are issued free of cost only by NHAI-authorised agencies, not by member banks.
Key exempted categories include vehicles transporting or accompanying the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Governors, Chief Ministers, Supreme Court and High Court Judges, Members of Parliament, MLAs and MLCs, gallantry award winners (Param Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and others), Central and State Armed Forces in uniform, Ambulances, Funeral Vans, Fire Fighting vehicles, NHAI inspection vehicles, and mechanically adapted vehicles for physically disabled persons.
For the complete list of all 34 exemption categories and to apply for an exempted FASTag, visit https://exemptedfastag.nhai.org/Exemptedfastag/images/SOPpolicy.pdf.
FASTag Blacklisting - What It Means and How to Avoid It
A blacklisted FASTag is one that has been blocked by the issuer bank and cannot be used to pay tolls. Blacklisting happens when:
- The FASTag account has insufficient balance.
- There is a vehicle-tag class mismatch.
- The FASTag is not affixed on the windscreen but is being carried in hand.
- There is a violation reported by a toll plaza.
To avoid blacklisting, recharge your FASTag as soon as you receive a low-balance alert from your bank. To resolve a blacklisting, call your issuing bank's toll-free number or the NHAI helpline 1033.
You can check your FASTag status in real time through the MyFASTag App using the colour-coded Tag Status feature: Green means active with sufficient balance, Orange means low balance, and Red means blacklisted.
MyFASTag App - NHAI's Official App
The MyFASTag App is the official mobile application for FASTag management, developed by NHAI and available on both Android (Google Play Store) and iOS (Apple App Store). The app allows you to:
- Purchase a new FASTag online.
- Recharge your FASTag wallet.
- Track all FASTag transactions.
- Check real-time wallet balance using colour-coded status (Green, Orange, Red).
- Search for the nearest FASTag Point-of-Sale by state, city, bank, or PIN code.
- Link NHAI FASTag to your existing bank account.
- Register and resolve grievances.
- Access highway helplines.
The app has two main sections: NHAI FASTag (bank-neutral) and Bank Specific FASTag. Download it by searching MyFASTag on the Play Store or App Store.
FASTag at Places Other than National Highways
FASTag is not limited to National Highways. It is currently operational at over 110 State Highway toll plazas as well. In January 2019, MoRTH unveiled a Scheme Guidelines for inclusion of State and City Toll Plazas under the NETC Programme, providing financial assistance to state governments covering 50% of the CAPEX cost of ETC infrastructure installation subject to a maximum of Rs 20 lakhs per toll plaza.
A pilot for parking payment via FASTag was carried out at Hyderabad International Airport. NHAI has also envisaged extending FASTag usage to fuel payments, e-challans, and various other payments at wayside amenities on highways in the future.
Grievance Redressal and Helpline
If you face any issue with FASTag at a toll plaza or with your account, here are the official channels:
| Issue Type | Contact |
|---|---|
| Toll plaza not accepting FASTag, tag not being read, blacklist issue at plaza, monthly pass not working at plaza | Call 1033 (National Helpline, toll-free, from any mobile or landline) |
| Recharge not credited, account-related issues, tag replacement | Call your issuing bank's toll-free customer care number |
| Incorrect toll deduction | Call your issuing bank. The bank raises a Chargeback request. Resolution takes 20 to 30 working days. |
| Harassment or misconduct by toll staff | Lodge complaint with Project Director at the toll plaza or email etc.nodal@ihmcl.com or call 1033 |
| NHAI FASTag specific issues | Call 1033 helpline for any assistance |
If ETC equipment at a toll plaza is not working and your FASTag has sufficient balance, you are permitted to pass the toll plaza free of cost. Report the issue to the concessionaire and also call customer care.
Important Rules to Know
- One FASTag is issued per vehicle based on the RC copy. Using a FASTag on a vehicle other than the one for which it was issued causes a class mismatch and leads to blacklisting.
- One vehicle is normally assigned one FASTag. However, if you are dissatisfied with your current bank's service, you may get a new FASTag from another bank, provided the earlier tag has not been blacklisted.
- If you sell your vehicle, close the FASTag account or wallet by contacting your issuing bank. The new owner must get a fresh FASTag.
- If your vehicle is stolen and your FASTag is being used, call your issuing bank immediately to block the FASTag account. NHAI has confirmed that stolen vehicles have been recovered swiftly using FASTag transaction data from toll plazas.
- If you relocate to another city, your FASTag works seamlessly on all NH toll plazas across India without any change or transfer.
- FASTag signage boards are visible 500 metres before every enabled toll plaza, so you can identify the FASTag lane in advance.
Conclusion
FASTag has fundamentally changed how highway toll collection works in India. It has eliminated cash queues at toll plazas, improved travel time, reduced fuel wastage, and brought full digital transparency to the toll collection system. With over 750 toll plazas now enabled and the introduction of the Annual Pass, FASTag is becoming an even more valuable tool for frequent highway users.
Whether you are a daily commuter, a long-distance traveller, or a commercial vehicle operator, having a properly funded and active FASTag is not just a legal requirement but a practical necessity for smooth travel on India's growing highway network.
