If you need to enrol for a new Aadhaar, update your name, address, mobile number, or get your biometrics updated, you no longer have to run around looking for an operator or stand in a disorganised queue. The Government of India has set up dedicated centres called Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK) across the country - proper, air-conditioned, well-managed centres where you can get all your Aadhaar work done in one place.
This article covers everything you need to know about Aadhaar Seva Kendra - what it is, what services it offers, how much it charges, how to book an appointment, and where you can find one in your city.
What is Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK)?
Aadhaar Seva Kendra, commonly known as ASK, is a dedicated Aadhaar service centre set up and run directly by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). It works as a single-stop destination for everything related to Aadhaar - whether you are enrolling for the first time or need to make changes to your existing Aadhaar.
Unlike regular Aadhaar enrolment centres at banks, post offices, or CSC centres, an Aadhaar Seva Kendra is directly managed by UIDAI. This means better infrastructure, trained staff, and a proper queue management system so your time is not wasted.
In the first phase of the project, UIDAI opened ASK centres in 78 districts across India, covering all metro cities, all state capitals, and Union Territories. These centres work alongside the over 66,000 Aadhaar Kendra already operating through banks, post offices, BSNL offices, and state governments.
Why Was Aadhaar Seva Kendra Set Up?
Most people who have tried to update their Aadhaar at a local enrolment centre know how frustrating it can get - long waits, no fixed timing, operators who are sometimes unavailable, or centres that handle too many people at once. UIDAI recognised these problems and created ASK to give people a reliable, clean, and organised space where Aadhaar services are available on a regular basis with proper systems in place.
The idea is simple that if you need any Aadhaar-related work done, you should have one dependable place to go to. That place is the Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
What Services Are Available at Aadhaar Seva Kendra?
You can visit any ASK for the following services:
- Aadhaar Enrolment - If you do not have an Aadhaar number yet, you can enrol at an ASK by submitting your biometrics and supporting documents.
- Demographic Information Update - You can update your name, address, gender, date of birth, mobile number, or email address linked to your Aadhaar.
- Biometric Data Update - You can update your photo, fingerprints, and iris scans. This is especially important for children who turn 5 and 15 years of age, as mandatory biometric updates are required at these ages.
- Download and Print Aadhaar - If you have lost your Aadhaar card or need a fresh printed copy, ASK can help you download and print a colour copy on an A4 sheet.
- Document Update (POI and POA) - You can submit Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents to support your demographic data.
All these services are available to every resident of India, including NRIs (Non-Resident Indians), at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra across the country.
Who Can Use Aadhaar Seva Kendra?
Any person who wants to enrol for Aadhaar or any existing Aadhaar number holder can visit an ASK. This includes:
- Indian residents enrolling for the first time.
- Children getting their biometrics updated at age 5 and 15.
- Adults who need to update any details in their Aadhaar.
- NRIs who hold Indian Aadhaar numbers.
- Senior citizens and persons with disabilities - all ASK centres are wheelchair friendly and have special arrangements for elderly and specially-abled visitors.
Timings of Aadhaar Seva Kendra
Aadhaar Seva Kendra centres are open all 7 days of the week, from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM (IST). They remain open on Saturdays and Sundays too, which makes it convenient for working individuals. However, they remain closed on national and regional holidays.
The last token for the day is issued at 5:30 PM, so make sure you arrive or book your appointment before that time.
How to Book an Appointment at Aadhaar Seva Kendra
UIDAI has set up an easy online appointment booking system so you do not have to stand in a long walk-in queue. Here is how you can book:
- Visit bookappointment.uidai.gov.in.
- Select the Aadhaar Seva Kendra of your choice from the list of available centres.
- Choose the service you need - enrolment or update.
- Pick a convenient date and time slot.
- Enter your mobile number (it does not need to be Aadhaar-registered) and confirm your booking.
This service is completely free. You do not need your Aadhaar-registered mobile number to book an appointment. However, one person can book a maximum of 2 appointments per month. You can also book an appointment for a family member using the same process.
If you prefer to walk in without an appointment, that is also allowed. The Token Management System (TMS) at each ASK handles both booked appointments and walk-in visitors.
How Does the Service Process Work at ASK?
Here is what happens when you visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra:
- If you booked an appointment online, you check in at the counter and your token is generated through the Appointment Management System (AMS).
- If you are a walk-in visitor, you collect a token at the Token Management System (TMS) counter at the centre.
- You wait for your token number to be called.
- An operator at one of the designated stations handles your request - enrolment, update, or document submission.
- Your biometrics are captured (if required) and your details are submitted to the UIDAI system.
- You receive an acknowledgement slip with an Enrolment ID (EID) to track the status of your request.
Each ASK has multiple operator stations - 4, 8, or 16 depending on the size of the centre - and can handle anywhere from 160 to 640 service requests per day. Every centre has both an Operations Manager and a Centre Manager in case you have any complaints or questions during your visit.

Can You Do Aadhaar Updates Online Instead of Visiting ASK?
Yes, for some updates you do not need to visit a centre at all. UIDAI's myAadhaar portal at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and New Aadhaar App allows you to update your address, mobile number and submit documents online from home - and document update through the portal is currently free of charge till 14 June 2026.
However, for biometric updates (fingerprints, iris, photo) and for fresh Aadhaar enrolment, you must visit a physical centre in person. Biometric data cannot be updated online.
How to Raise a Grievance or Complaint
If you face any issue at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, you have several options:
- Talk directly to the Operations Manager or Centre Manager available at the ASK.
- Call the UIDAI toll-free helpline at 1947 - available for all Aadhaar-related queries and complaints.
- Write to UIDAI at help@uidai.gov.in.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Aadhaar Seva Kendra
-
What is the difference between Aadhaar Seva Kendra and a regular Aadhaar enrolment centre?
A regular Aadhaar enrolment centre is run by banks, post offices, CSC centres, or BSNL offices under their own schedules. An Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK) is directly set up and managed by UIDAI. ASK centres have fixed timings, a proper appointment and token system, air-conditioned facilities, and dedicated staff - making the experience more organised and reliable.
-
Do I need to book an appointment or can I just walk in?
You can do both. Walk-in visitors are welcome at all ASK centres. A token is issued to you at the counter on arrival. However, booking an appointment online at bookappointment.uidai.gov.in saves your time and reduces waiting.
-
Is Aadhaar enrolment free at ASK?
Yes. Aadhaar enrolment is completely free at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra. There is no charge for a first-time Aadhaar application.
-
How much does it cost to update my Aadhaar at ASK?
A biometric update costs ₹125 in most cases (free for children in the mandatory age groups). A demographic update done separately costs ₹75. If you update both biometric and demographic data at the same time, the demographic part is free. Document submission at the centre costs ₹75, but doing it online through the myAadhaar portal is currently free till 14 June 2026.
-
Can I update my mobile number at Aadhaar Seva Kendra?
Yes. You can update your mobile number at any ASK centre. Mobile number update is a demographic update and costs ₹75 if done separately, or is free if done along with a biometric update.
-
What documents do I need to carry to ASK?
For enrolment, you need a valid Proof of Identity (POI) with your photograph, a Proof of Address (POA), and a Proof of Date of Birth document. For updates, you only need documents supporting the specific detail you want to change. You can check the full list of accepted documents at uidai.gov.in.
-
Can I book an appointment for a family member?
Yes. You can book an appointment for yourself or for a family member using the online appointment system. One person can book a maximum of 2 appointments per month.
-
Is ASK open on weekends?
Yes. Aadhaar Seva Kendra centres are open all 7 days of the week from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, including Saturdays and Sundays. They are closed only on national and regional holidays.
-

Yes. All Aadhaar Seva Kendra centres are wheelchair friendly and have special arrangements to assist elderly and differently-abled visitors.
-
How do I track the status of my Aadhaar update after visiting ASK?
You receive an Enrolment ID (EID) on the acknowledgement slip given to you at the ASK. You can use this EID to check the status of your update at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in or by calling the UIDAI helpline at 1947.
-
What if there is no ASK in my city?
If your city does not have an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, you can visit any nearby Aadhaar enrolment centre run by banks, post offices, or Common Service Centres (CSC). You can find the nearest enrolment centre using the locator tool at uidai.gov.in.
Final Word
Aadhaar Seva Kendra makes it easier and more reliable to get your Aadhaar work done. Whether you are enrolling for the first time, updating your details, or just need a fresh printed copy of your Aadhaar, ASK gives you a proper, organised space to do it - with fixed timings, trained staff, and a clear fee structure.
